I received a call close to 4:00 because the truck broke down and the crew would not make it to my house until between 5:00-7pm. At this point I spoke to Sasha because the move should have been rescheduled given that the move would therefore be occurring in the dark. I was told I needed to except delivery or I would not see my belongs in the near future AND I WOULD BE CHARGED! The crew arrived at approximately 6pm. At this time they informed my my dresser was broken badly. They explained to me that the pick-up crew should have removed the legs off the dresser, standard protocol, and if they had the dresser would not have been damaged like it was. Pictures attached. This is a large, heavy dresser of great quality. In order for the type of damage sustained, one crew was outright negligent. My belongings must have been severely mismanaged. Not acceptable. Further evidence of this total disregard for my furniture is shown in the dinning room chairs (pictures attached). Again, heavy high-quallity furniture with cracked legs. This damage would also be hard to accomplish without the negligent acts of Flatrate employees. The majority of my furniture arrived dented and scratched or otherwise broken. Not acceptable. My $3,000 elliptical machine is missing its cords and the body cracked. Other boxes with household items were not delivered. Needless to say, I would not recommend Flat Rate Movers to anyone, nor would I use them myself again. The quote process was quick and easy, worked with Richard to walk through my home, identify what all we have to move, what they couldn't move (alcohol, open bottles, etc) and what the estimated effort would be. Everything started out so smooth. After that, it went off the rails. Receiving follow ups from Richard was painful, at best. 2-3 day response times were the norm. Calling into the company was just as painful as the LA-based phone number they give you has no record of you, has to transfer you to their region-specific offices. I guess they haven't heard of centralized computer systems. The confusing emails continued, after receiving multiple phone calls and emails (all of which I answered immediately) i kept receiving requests to "verify my move by calling our office" - all the way up until the day before we moved. Living in an apartment in SF, we had to schedule the elevator and loading dock to be reserved, however, asking for a timeline of when to expect the onsite team was worse than pulling teeth. Thankfully I was on very good terms with the apartment management team, and they reserved both for me all day. The onsite team didn't show up until after 10am on the day of the move, even though we were quoted 9am the day before. Okay, I can overlook that. They were friendly and efficient and had our 2 bedroom apartment packed in 5 hours (there was 4 guys in their onsite team). They did miss a few boxes worth of stuff because they were going so fast, but in the end, those made it on the truck too The next day for our delivery, they were on time as discussed (showed up at 9am despite the long drive) and were friendly and efficient. All of our stuff was delivered to our temporary house and the storage unit in under 3 hours, with all furniture reassembled and everything. The storage unit was packed to the gills and the driver who packed the storage unit must have been great at Tetris as a kid. It was the unpacking where we encountered more problems. Dents and scratches to our furniture, boxes packed without regard for its contents, heavy items smashed on top of lightweight or fragile items, just to fill a box. Utter carelessness is the feeling my wife and I got as we unpacked box after box. They didn't care what condition our items got delivered in, just that they were delivered. Flatrate.com and their moving staff were absolutely amazing from the minute I initiated my first call to customer service until the last item of goods were moved into my new home. They demonstrated absolute professionalism and customer service at its finest. Every bit of my experience was worth the money paid (which was considerably less than what I was quoted by another moving company), and I would use them again in a heartbeat! For starters, they sent someone to my home to take an inventory of my belongings and prepare a quote for me, which they stood by 100%. The quote was received that same day, and there was no pressure to sign a contract. I made it clear I would be contacting other companies to comparison shop, so they provided me with what I needed and allowed me the freedom to make the right decision for me. By comparison, the other moving companies I contacted were very unprofessional from the get-go. One company even quoted me $1000 higher than flatrate and then stood me up when I scheduled a time for them to come out and take an inventory to provide me with a more accurate quote! On move day, Flatrate sent out four guys who were very well prepared with what seemed like over 100 moving blankets, plenty of wardrobe boxes, and other moving supplies. They systematically wrapped every piece of furniture, lamps, mirrors -- anything that wasn't already in a box -- with moving blankets to ensure protection. I waived purchasing additional insurance and in my case I had no problems at all with damage (although I do recommend buying insurance if you can afford it because the unexpected does happen.) I moved from a 4-bedroom townhouse into a 5-bedroom house, and these guys did not slow down once during the entire move (they are not paid by the hour like other moving companies). They were absolutely awesome and very courteous throughout the entire day. Anytime I tried to help load something, one of them would stop me and say, "I'll take care of that for you." So basically all I had to do was supervise and answer questions as needed. This was the most stress-free moving experience of my life! My only regret is I wish I had thought ahead to stop by the ATM beforehand and pull out extra cash because these guys deserved quadruple the tip that I gave them! I'm really sad to write this review. I've used FlatRate before and thought they were fine, but today was a different experience. My husband is out of town and we are closing escrow on our house, so I hired FlatRate to help pack up all my belongings and store them until we find our forever-home. The day started out ok, and I felt like I had a good repertoire with the 8 guys working with me. Even after they shattered my favorite lamp I went to a local bakery to buy them fresh chocolate chip cookies. I made sure they all had drinks. While going through my stuff I let them have dibs on anything I didn't need anymore. Needless to say, I feel totally taken advantage of. I went to check on the progress of the garage after being in the house for awhile, and I walked in on 2 guys swigging from a bottle of previously unopened liquor that my husband had brought back for me from one of his work trips to South Africa. I was totally taken aback, and ran to get the foreman. The foreman told me to call his boss at the office, so I did. I was pretty emotional since these guys were in my house touching all of my stuff, and I could no longer trust them. The manager apologized, but his solution was that I should call the police and file a police report. The foreman had the 2 guys I caught red-handed sit in the truck for the rest of the time they were there, but the whole situation was extremely uncomfortable. We are paying a LOT of money to have FlatRate pack, store and move all of our stuff. We were not offered any form of discount or compensation. They did not offer to replace the liquor their employees stole from us. Their only advice was to file a police report. I did not have the heart to call the police on some poor schlubs who were willing to lose their jobs over a few sips of alcohol. At the end of the day, I am truly disappointed by the customer service and the way they decided to handle the mishap. Besides saying sorry they made no effort to compensate us for the awful experience. And because of this I will never use FlatRate again. I suggest that you avoid them as well. read more

I went to check on the progress of the garage after being in the house for awhile, and I walked in on 2 guys swigging from a bottle of previously unopened liquor that my husband had brought back for me from one of his work trips to South Africa. I was totally taken aback, and ran to get the foreman. The foreman told me to call his boss at the office, so I did. I was pretty emotional since these guys were in my house touching all of my stuff, and I could no longer trust them. The manager apologized, but his solution was that I should call the police and file a police report. The foreman had the 2 guys I caught red-handed sit in the truck for the rest of the time they were there, but the whole situation was extremely uncomfortable. We are paying a LOT of money to have FlatRate pack, store and move all of our stuff. We were not offered any form of discount or compensation. They did not offer to replace the liquor their employees stole from us. Their only advice was to file a police report. I did not have the heart to call the police on some poor schlubs who were willing to lose their jobs over a few sips of alcohol. At the end of the day, I am truly disappointed by the customer service and the way they decided to handle the mishap. Besides saying sorry they made no effort to compensate us for the awful experience. And because of this I will never use FlatRate again. I suggest that you avoid them as well. read more

Even after they shattered my favorite lamp I went to a local bakery to buy them fresh chocolate chip cookies. I made sure they all had drinks. While going through my stuff I let them have dibs on anything I didn't need anymore. Needless to say, I feel totally taken advantage of. Absolutely horrific experience with this company. My wife and I used FlatRate to move from LA to NYC. When I booked the move over the phone, the agent didn't walk me through the insurance options, so I figured I could choose which insurance I wanted the day of the move. When the day of the move arrived, I signed the paperwork and selected the full insurance coverage option. Fast forward a few weeks to the day our things arrived in NY. We had expensive China from our wedding registry packaged in two boxes... one of them arrived just fine, and the other box was completely destroyed. It was clear that somebody had dropped the box. I called the company and spoke to Joshua Scott in LA, and he immediately turned it into a shouting competition instead of trying to be helpful. He said it was my fault that I hadn't selected the full insurance coverage prior to the move and that it was too late. This guy has no business being in customer service. It's extremely frustrating that this company couldn't care less that I paid them a lot of money for a very expensive move. Regardless, he said he would pull the recordings from my conversation to see if I truly wasn't walked through the insurance coverage options when I spoke with the original agent, and that he would get back to me to make it right if I in fact had not been properly walked through the insurance options. Sure enough, I never heard from him again. I then got a hold of another customer service person and she told me that the previous information I was given was incorrect, and that it was not too late to sign up for full coverage insurance, but that I would have to pay for the insurance upgrade and then the $500 deductible as well to file a claim. I opted against that, and decided to just file a claim using the basic insurance coverage. Unsurprisingly, I haven't even received a response to my last several emails. It has been several months and I have not received any resolution to my case. Do yourself a favor and use a different moving company. read more
