My favorite part (apart from tasting the cocktails) was the blind tastings led by Jeremy Lake; vodka, rum, gin, tequila, whiskey, scotch, liqueurs etc. By the end of the class I was able to identify the type, style and quality of spirits without reading a label.

If you're looking to write a comedy pilot script, I highly recommend Jackie Geary's pilot class…read more Besides being a successful comedic actor, Jackie's comedy writing has been optioned at Warner Brothers and TBS. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to learn from someone that currently works in the business. I went from only a log line to a 35 page sitcom script that I'm elated with in 2 months. It's an enormous amount of work, but if you're willing to put in the effort, Jackie will be there with you every step of the way. She teaches invaluable tools of comedy that help you develop a solid pitch document, outline and finally the script. I learned a ton in a short amount of time. The focus is always on how her teachings apply to your own writing and what you can do to make your ideas come to life. Along with Jackie, I was also lucky to have a fun, talented and supportive group of writers in the class to share the experience with along the way. I feel I now have the skills to write more sitcom pilots and infuse comedy in all my writing, if I so choose. I wouldn't have been able to say that with any confidence before this class. It's well worth the time and investment!!

I had taken acting classes in the past but these classes really unlocked how to work with material and perform for camera in a natural and real way. Not so much script analyzation with a partner and more actually getting in there and doing it. Less head stuff and more action. I loved the weeks I spent in these classes and made some amazing friends as well. Jamison and Jackie are geniuses in their craft and I will definitely be taking more classes with them in the future.

I also took Improv classes at the Groundlings which were VERY expensive. When I took classes at the Groundlings, it was very apparent that they basically anyone in the lower classes were just a number. They fill the lower level classes just to keep the money flowing. I found Actors Improv Studio through my agent. No it's not in the fanciest building or the best neighborhood. But that's not what you go to class for, and he usually has some licorice or candy that you can snack on during class. That definitely sweetens the deal. :) I took classes here for about a month. Bill was EXTREMELY helpful and it was very apparent that he cared about each student individually. He takes the time to critique and praise you after each exercise. He even videos during each class, and after some exercises you can watch your work. The best part of his classes was his encouraging nature. All I can really remember from taking classes at the Groundlings is all the rules they give of what you are not supposed to do. Bill presented the rules of Improv, but not in a way that makes an improvisor feel stifled and held back. I left his class feeling much more confident thanks to him. The only reason that I haven't been able to go back is b/c I can't afford the extra expense at this time. But I would recommend him to anyone who really wants to know what it takes to become a great Improvisor. Yes CDs and such are mildly impressed when they see the name of a big name Improv Studio on your resume. But that won't book and keep a job. You have to be able to deliver much more than that. Bill will help you get to a place where you can consistently deliver.

I first learned of Acting Pros when I attended a free workshop headed by Wendy Davis at SAG…read more Immediately, I knew that Wendy and her Acting Pros partner-in-crime, Lilach Mendelovich, had a bottle of secret awesome sauce on audition technique. Just this past fall (2019), I had the privilege of studying with Lilach for 12 weeks and doing a special session on close-ups with Wendy. Before taking this class, I did not have a strong process in place to break down challenging sides quickly and effectively. I always spent too much time working on thoughts and backstory that did not necessarily heighten the given circumstances of the scene. I was working hard, but it was hardly working! I was exploring so much, that I got lost in scene execution. Lilach is an expert scene detective. She breaks down the specificity of each moment in a scene, from the scene descriptions to the action lines to the dialogue. Nothing is missed or taken for granted. As Lilach made our class see, all the answers are there in the script if you seek them out and stay true to that script. Of course, there is room to imagine circumstances and use 'as-ifs', but unlike other training, Acting Pros honors the vision of each story and treats actors as key storytellers. Aside from the process of breaking down sides, actors learn important on-camera techniques, such as handling props (when and when not to), executing highly physical scenes, finding the truth in comedy, and some basic do's and don'ts for on-camera acting. If you are serious about improving your acting technique and scoring more auditions, get in this class NOW!

I just needed to get through an audition. Sound familiar? I attended a free workshop, and yes, I showed up ready to learn something, seem interested, be scared by the price and never go back... but... I actually sat there and considered it, called my boyfriend, borrowed money and signed up for the class. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I'm glad I didn't. I think of it as an acting class surrounded by an audition class. Like a yummy acting taco! Full of all the goodness that will fill your confidence to get into a casting room and give it your all. It's not a guarantee that you'll get every roll you go for, but it will guarantee, if you do your work, that you will give it your 100% at every audition. Julienne Irons was our main instructor. Wendy Davis and Lilach Mendelovich taught us a couple of classes each. Between them all I felt more prepared than ever to walk into an audition confident, ready to take over the room and impress. I may not get the part, but they'll remember me! So, all in all, I recommend the class. So much that I'm taking the Comedy Class with Lilach Mendelovich. "I'm like the cream in the middle of a Oreo I'm the…read morestrawberry jam on the toasted bread Fab 5 Freddy jam rocking way ahead" -lyrics from Fab 5 Freddy's "Change the Beat" This DJ institution looms larger than the hiphopopatumus itself. What a cool location for music and the creation of same. I already knew about Mr. Babu because I am a hip hop and rap music connoisseur like the rest of the kids who grew up bored as hell in high school in the late 90s. For those not familiar with top 40 music in the late 90s, the options were pretty much listen to Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jay Z, The Cash Money Millionaires, Sisqo, etc. or be bored as hell. Did I leave out a lot of other more worthwhile hip hop and rap groups from that list? Yes, I left out Snoop Doggy Dog because he was in the doggy dog house kicking it with George Clinton. Woof! In any case, I perceive the Beat Junkies creep, creeping into the shortlist of hip hops major luminaries--if they're not there already Depending on how one traces the history of the Beat Junkies, they have been around since the 90s when Curse, Rhettmatic, Melo-D, Icy Ice, Symphony, & What?!. Shortkut, D-Styles, Havik, and Tommy Gun began the group. DJ Babu joined in '93, and Mr. Choc in '96. One could trace the Junkies as far back as as the dates from all the records they have sampled in the tracks they have produced, diced, edited, and cut up over the years too; after all, hip hop is all about taking a spark from another track and building a bonfire. A real hip hop lineage exists and thrives within the BIJOS walls, and anyone lucky enough to set foot in the BJIOS will certainly see some living legends. I experienced the history of this group firsthand just setting foot in the BJIOS (Beat Junkie Institute of Sound). Inside the BIJOS, sits a modest yet carefully curated collection of records for sale. The records tend to be ones containing sought after samples, breaks, vocals, etc. For example, some of the records have been labeled if they contain a sought after break or were sampled by a famous rapper/producer. I remember seeing a Dave Grusin record with a note on it that read: Notorious BIG sample. To the back of the BJIOS sits the sacred turntable octagon. It is a circle of turntables for more practiced DJs to share ideas and hold mixing sessions together. I admit I had not seen anything like it anyplace else. The core of the institute sits in the the middle of the studio space. The Junkies have built a classroom in the form of a dozen or so DJ booths or stations that face a stage and a screen where the Junkies provide instruction on every last facet of music making. I have sat through a few classes now. I believe the Junkies have a polished series of lessons and classes that they effectively promote, market, and sell. Experts often have trouble brokering a skill or expertise to others; The Junkies have succeeded in simplifying the often demanding artform of DJing. They want to build better DJs and they are doing it. The first few classes I took were very digestible, considerately paced, and well organized. Not to mention that DJ Babu, the creator of the Blind Alley* routine himself, hosts a lot of the classes, so one gets to learn from The Man Himself. The remainder of the BJIOS staff is just as incredible as DJ Babu. I have seen Mr. Choc, Rhettmatic, and J. Rocc carrying boxes, taking phone calls, or interacting with students. DJ Sammi G (Soulection and BJIOS) handles a lot of the marketing, communication, and outreach for the BJIOS, and I believe she independently developed the Ladies of Sound, which is a DJ music group for women. Several members of the group are current or former BJIOS students; I have listened to a few of their mixes, and I have seen DJ Sammi live once at the Commissary Lounge in Costa Mesa. I found her set impressive and tailored to the particular audience that night. I had a bit of of a leg injury and a cold that night, but I remember Sammi dropped Taki Taki at the right time and got me in my dancing shoes anyway. Each one of the BJIOS appears to contribute to the functioning of the Institute in every possible way. They all seem to be doing both the more "fun" or "glamorous" aspects of their line of work, and the more routine tasks like answering phones/drafting emails/ etc. Even J Rocc took some time out from carrying a box of hats to talk to me about a Prince set he did once. I do not perceive an aloof CEO or CFO behind the Beat Junkies. They are all involved and all seem emotionally and materially invested in the business. Because I am writing this during the COVID era, I thought I would conclude this by stating that the Beat Junkies have done an exceedingly thorough job of keeping the studio storefront safe and germ free. I cannot imagine running a small business is easy right now. So I def. respect the Beat Junkies for taking the necessary measures to run their business properly. Wish I could say the same for the rest of the country.
