My husband and I have been visiting Flanigans every time we hit Central TX since around 2016--right after they opened. Back then it was just the two owners (a married couple). It's delightful how they've grown. Flannigans is clearly a labor of love (for alcohol, architecture, food and Texas history) and the joy of experimentation. Food is great, wine is great, spirits are exceptional. The Texas American Gothic (TAG) is a completely unique experience that needs to spread. TX liquor distributors need to jump on this yesterday. We went for brunch, and were pleasantly surprised at what a great little spot this is for drinks (espresso martini was to die for!), food (was incredibly delicious-try the scones!!), and the owners were not only friendly and flexible with our orders (we had a food allergy in our group), but had lots of historical information about the building and spirits they sell! Went in before dinner for our anniversary and it was above & beyond what I expected!!! This place was an absolute gem! Went in for a wine tasting and left with so much more. If you want to get your Irish on...or just get it on with wine and spirits I can think of no better place and space than Flanigan's. We recently stopped there because of curiosity and commonality. You see my wife's maiden name shares the unique spelling of Flanigan, usually written as Flanagan. What's in a name? Everything! The warm and open interior belies Flanigan's outward warehouse like appearance. Turns out the space was a set location for The Newton Boys, repurposed to look like a 1930's era hotel. Yes, you too can walk in the footsteps of Matthew McConaughey! Beyond the atmosphere in abundance the lovely Mrs. G reports the wine was fabulous, good enough to compel her to buy two bottles of their Chardonnay. We shared a deliciously diverse cheese plate, reasonably priced at $14.00. The venue offered live music with a troubadour alternating between Irish folk songs and cowboy tunes from trail. The Grandmas are working their way through the Texas Hill Country Winery Map and are having the time of our lives. Recently, we went "off map" and discovered a delightful gem, Flanigan's in Bertram, TX. Flanigan's was built in 1904 and still has intact its beautifully crafted grand staircase. The rest of the building contains movie set modifications from the movie, "The Newton Boys", which starred Matthew McConaughey. The true charm of Flanigan's is Ted, who lead the guided wine tasting. Through most of the wine tastings we have tried so far we have gotten the run of the mill run down of the various wines and then left on our own. Ted led us through an informative and delightful wine tasting experience. Ted also told us about the history of the wine, the story behind each wines name, history of the building, the movie that was shot there, and so much more. We also were delighted to met the owners of Flanigan's, Drs. Fantastic place, and while we came for the local potato based spirits we got a lot more than we expected. Old fashioned decor and historied (get them to tell you about how the place started). Nice little flower and herb garden out front. We came on a Friday around 5 so it was pretty quiet. We ordered the spirit flight and an Irish Whiskey Smash (tasty!). Our server (who was the head gardener as well - neat!) was personable, professional, and very knowledgeable while he guided us through the flight of neat/bloomed/rocks tastings. We also talked with one of the Flanigans on the liquors themselves when we had some more in depth questions on the processes and techniques. Ask about their water and filtering! We've been burned with some Texas distillers and winemakers before, and with something so unique I frankly was expecting a semi-pretentious bust. But this is great stuff and a good price to boot. What a great place for wine tasting, delicious food, and cocktails! I enjoyed the red wine selection, and my husband loved the old fashions! They just opened for their soft opening and don't have any hard spirits ready for sale yet but I'm told they will be ready in a couple weeks before the grand opening. Flannigan's is partnering with nearby Pilot Knob winery for the wine offerings and likewise the quality and service is excellent. They have limited food options for now but I'm sure those will be expanded as they grow as well. read more

Great place to visit! Beautiful inside and the staff was incredibly friendly. They told us about the movie filmed at this location and we needed up watching it a few days later. I enjoyed it much more having visited this place. The whiskey was delicious, unfortunately is was a Sunday and we couldn't purchase a bottle. The food smelled great! We just had breakfast so we had an appetizer that was perfect for us. Highly recommend. Also, there is a market beside the distillery that is very cute. I got some plants from there. read more

Such nice people. Almost a mom and pop feel. My family was driving through town on our way to camp at Inks lake park and we came across an old timey looking town. We saw signs for a distillery and said "let's pull in and see if we can use the facilities on our long road trip". To much a surprise the place was like an old saloon from the western days& had a whole wall of fun board games. We decided on a whim to let the kids stretch their legs and we'd have a bite to eat and a little drink ! Wow! A ladies trip. We decided to stop in and were pleasantly surprised by the special history of the building and then the hospitality. The owners were not there and we were told it's even more amazing when they are. Hard to believe because the whiskey tasting was exceptional and the lesson on how to do it was so fun. The building is gorgeous, the parking is on the small side. The whiskey I tried was not very good. For a two year Corn whiskey it fell flat on flavor, mouth feel, and had no finish. Overall not a great product in my opinion. I would have loved to try more but the guy behind the bar was more concerned with flirting with two young ladies doing a wine tasting than focusing on the rest of the bar or waiting parties. Overall this was a negative experiance, product fell short and so did the staff member. I would not recommend this as a whiskey destination. read more

What an incredible find. Upon our arrival today at noon, the experience of the 1904 building in Bertram, Texas started. We were greeted by Kevin and Dana Flanigan (owners) as we walked up up to the beautiful old-fashioned wood bar and the beautiful surroundings of the former home of the Griffith Lumber Company, where you get lost in time with the a slight feel of the old west. Quit an exquisite location, where the owners made us feel special that included a lesson in fine wine tasting by Kevin that will forever leave a lasting impression on us. We have been to wineries all over the US, but Flanigan's is by far the best one thus far. Just a short driving distance from our home north of Austin, we will definitely bring our friends and family for wine and a snack. A hop and a skip just northwest of Austin, it is a must visit location. read more

A cute little winery off Hwy 29. Very nice decor and renovation to the building. The wines were nice and cannot wait to see their growth and expansion. Not a whiskey fan but my mom is a whiskey snob and said the whiskeys were very nice. Her least favorite was the grappa but she says it's all about a personal taste preference. Her definite favorite was the Texas American Gothic. Very nice staff as well. Will definitely be back. read more

I just stumbled upon this little little beauty while out on a Sunday Afternoon motorcycle ride and highly recommend it anyone in the area or simply passing through. I had a wonderful conversation with owners Kevin and Dana Flanigan while sampling their "Patriot" Tx sipping whiskey, Montepulciano Red, and their Chardonnay....all were excellent! I wanted to take home a bottle of Patriot, but due to TX laws prohibiting them from selling spirits on SUN, I had to 'settle' for a bottle of the Montepulciano - can't wait to uncork it and share it with my girlfriend. We'll be back for the Sommelier Tasting experience and dinner. I'm hooked!! read more

Nothing like an early 20th century building in a small town to help set the mood for your wine tasting experience. "Iron Star Hall" is the location of owner's Kevin and Dana Flanigan's winery. Over the years, the two building sites have been a lumber store and post office. It also served as a setting for the movie, "Newton Boys". The interior is quite spectacular and does have that 1920's feel and look of the movie set hotel and bar. They've been opened since September of 2016 during the last Oatmeal festival and have been serving up some good wine & spirits along with some great story telling. There are currently five wines available for tasting. During your tasting session, Kevin will guide you through his sommelier experience and make sure that your sight, smell, and tasting experience is well done. Along the way, he may tell you some interesting stories and jokes to help keep things lively. The 2015 Viaggio is a dry white blend of 50% Muscat Blanc and 50% Muscat Canelli. It's loaded with citrus aromas and some tartaric acids. Ironically, as you let it linger, it does smooth out for a nice finish. The 2015 Rose' is made from Mourvedre. It has honey and cranberry notes and is perfect for these 100+ degree days in Texas. The Bear is a 50/50 Merlot and Sangiovese blend using old world style techniques. It is tannic with a long finish. The Slainte is a new world style of 35% Malbec, 35% Mourvèdre, 9% Petite Sirah, 12% Petite Sirah, 6% Tannat, and 3% Alicante Bouschet. Everything but the kitchen sink, right? It is quite fruit forward with some tobacco notes and is well balanced. Last is the Marmalada. It's a sweet blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Merlot. Chilled, this makes a great light bodied wine that is smooth and refreshing and delightful for summertime sipping. In addition to the wine tasting, there is a spirit tasting to do, as well. Trust us, Kevin won't let you out without trying them. We might have to setup a separate blog for these, but you will get the level of quality tasting experience as you do with the wine and some good stories from Kevin. This is a nice addition to the Bertram area and is worth the stop on your way out to the Hill Country. Cheers! read more
