This Northwest Indiana restaurant and hotel has long beginnings dating from 1947 when they were located in East Chicago, Indiana to their present home in Hammond (Hessville) from 1959 onwards. Seventy (70) years of the same family running this storied business. What a great success story! The interior is as colorful as the eclectic mix of patrons, real people, from all walks of life that come from all around to be a part of the fun, excitement and enjoy excellent food and cocktails. There aren't many places around these days that are as alive, genuine and original as Chuck & Irene's. This place is happening! The walls are adorned with countless photos of memorable days gone by, the booths are so period, mid 20th century in design and are just so wonderful to behold and sit in. It feels like a throw back in time of days much more simpler and easy with far less worry. Chuck & Irene's would make a great set for a Hollywood movie and this place should be listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This place rocks and should be given appropriate attention. Yes, I was very impressed and you should be too! There's a back room for dining but most of the real action and the place to people watch is up front in the bar area. This place is clean and well taken care of. Do take a walk downstairs! I loved the 1930's, one piece double urinal and it's still working! Loved the sign that said NO men in the women's washroom! So not politically correct! Yes! Chuck & Irene's has food, fabulous food. Come on a Friday and enjoy a fish fry! We had calamari, perch, shrimp and frog legs, a Northwest Indiana delicacy. DELICIOUS! The waitresses are busty and friendly and the owners couldn't be more accommodating and nicer. Don't change a thing to your interior or exterior! Try to get 25 people in that place! Ha! Ha! Ha!" as he turned and was walking away from me. I was in udder shock! What?! It's the local VFW Hall and I'm trying to help out our veterans?! My entire point was before he cut me off, the hall holds way more people than his little, bitty place and I wanted to offer the hall so he can book larger acts. Oh well! His loss! Not really sure what this guy's deal is but it seems like my experience is a common one with him! Read the other reviews! Wow! In this day and age an owner shouldn't treat customers like this.
