I had been looking forward to trying out Flame Kabob for some time. I am always looking for a good kabob place where I can get my frequent fix. And wow was I ever soooo.....disappointed!! It was nothing like I had hoped for. I came because of the solid rave reviews. I'm not sure what kind of standards others have when it comes to this type of food?
What went wrong tonight? First we walk into an empty restaurant where someone is vacuuming, the time is 6.30 on a Monday. I figure one of the tables was probably messy and the owner takes advantage of the restaurant being empty so he can do some vacuuming. But as we come in, he tells us to sit down and keeps vacuuming all around all tables, right by our feet. I thought it was odd that he kept vacuuming as several people kept coming in and reading their menus.
The food was served quickly and it looked like it could be an enjoyable meal. Before the food is served they give you some bread(similar to Naan) with a yoghurt and cucumber sauce. I had the single lamb dish, chunks of lamb served with rice. My wife had the ground chicken, two skewers with lentil rice. In retrospect, I should have ordered the chicken where you would get two skewers for 9.99, as opposed to the lamb where it's just one skewer for 11.99. This is actually not a very good deal, but I was set on ordering lamb as I eat too much chicken as it is anyway. But when I saw my wife's chicken dish I was actually glad I had the lamb because the ground chicken was completely burnt underneath, that is all black on the side facing downward. You seriously didn't think we would see that? I have had kabobs many many times, in many many different restaurant, different styles of cuisines. I may not be an expert of the Persian cuisine, but I know what a decent kabob is supposed to look like and I am pretty sure the Persion version is not supposed to be all black on one side. Yes, we could have sent it back, but was really not in the mood for causing a fuss for various reasons, and and also apprehensive to sending food back as I don't know what "extra complementary ingredients", I've you know what I mean, are going to come back on my plate.
I didn't have the lentil rice, I am allergic to lentils. My wife didn't think the lentil rice was anything special at all. Really not getting the comments about the rice being amazing. If you never had rice with lentils maybe? Let me go back to the chicken, apart from it being burnt on the one side, it was kind of soggy inside. How do you manage to make grilled meat burnt and soggy at the same time? The lamb was Ok at best, but not juicy enough and not enough spices. Lamb is a tough type of meat and needs more spices than most types of meat. I am more used to Indian, Turkish and Afghan type of kabobs, so not sure if this is a Persian thing. I do have to say though that the presentation of both dishes were nice.
Over and on to the interior, it is very dated an worn. Not a very clean impression, tables and chairs a bit dirty and the restrooms not among the cleanest I have seen, opened the trash can and it was absolutely stinking. It's a casual type of dining experience. Most dishes are chicken or beef, with a few lamb options. They don't serve alcohol. There seemed to be three types of dessert - baklava, Napoleon cake and I think rice pudding.
I don't get the reviews about the service being friendly. Whoever served us, it may have been the owner, kind of tossed the bread and sauce at the table. It took a very long time to get the check, this is in a restaurant with less than a handful of tables. The server seemed more interested in anything else other than making us pay for the mediocre food. He was cleaning, stacking plates and what not, while avoiding eye contact.
If you have read this far, I think you see where I am going with this review.....ehm, don't go here. I understand that you might think this is good food if you are new to cuisines of this type. But I doubt Flame Kabob would last long in any of the major US cities where competion on the kabob market is fierce. Trust an expert's advice, just go to Bosphurus in Cary or Shish Kabob in downtown Raleigh for some decent kabob. I hate giving one star reviews, because end of the day this is someone's livelivehood, but this was just too subpar. read more
