While this isn't anything special, I really like coming here for a quick, small meal that's also healthy and doesn't break the bank. There is definitely a lack of flavor overall. They have a few sauces to choose from to add flavor, but I'm not a big fan of them. I'd rather just eat it plain. Their veggies are always fresh, which is one of my favorite parts about coming here. Would definitely recommend. This is like one of the only standing food spots in this Plaza now. They took down Chicks Natural, Jamba Juice, & the food court restaurants. I haven't been here in awhile but each time I have it's been great. Food is good. Love their magic sauce & the triple hot sauce. Let me tell you, I love spicy & that hot sauce is pretty spicy. The worker today was kind. I ordered ahead of time online so I just went to pick up. I asked for additional hot sauces & she didn't limit me or charge me. Located in the middle of the Sorrento Food Court lies The Flame Broiler, a diamond in the rough. Nearly all of the restaurants inside of the food court are trash... low quality greasy foods from Chinese to Mexican. So, there aren't many options for a restaurant that is healthy, fast, and delicious. There's Green Spot, which is overpriced, no flavor salads or my other go-to in Which Wich, which is delicious but you have to deal with the mean senile owner. I've been coming to The Flame Broiler for years now. It's a simple menu. Choose white or brown rice. Choose steak, chicken, or tofu. Veggies or no veggies. And they ALWAYS ask if you want green onions or not. Also, they come in Mini, Regular, or the Large Bowl. I feel like the Mini is enough for one person, so I'm usually satisfied with that. The Regular is always clutch if I didn't eat breakfast. The Large is a RIP OFF. It seems like they give you the same amount of rice and meat as a regular, but add oranges and salad to it. No thanks! The Magic Sauce is pretty much teriyaki but it's sooooo good and a little goes a long way. Then I add the hot sauce to get that sweet n sour flavor in my bowl. It's more tangy than it is spicy, but I like it. There is always a line but it goes HELLA fast. I literally ordered, got my food, and left within 2 minutes. They really streamlined the process with fast efficient cooks! Most bowl places try to compliment something as simple as a chicken bowl. It's not rocket science... but, The Flame Broiler mastered it! I'm giving this place 3 stars because the lady behind the counter was so nice and helpful. However, the food was not great. A lot of stores in the center have closed down, including, apparently the chicken restaurant that my family asked me to pick up dinner from. However this chicken restaurant was here and so I tried it. I ordered several sides of chicken which were quite expensive and very dry. You wanna smell like magic sauce? Why not just step inside any Flame Broiler. That's the price you have to pay in order to get some solid rice bowl-esque food. It's not teriyaki in that the rice is more bland. Those beloved vegetables of yours are boiled and not steamed. Your 50/50 which is marketed the same way "frings" are somehow as some sort of magical effect on people thinking it's genius. Like before Flame Broiler no place had ever offered half chicken half beef. I like the magic sauce, but don't like smelling like it. I don't like their hot sauce since it's basically Louisiana vinegar heavy. The location is tiny, basically fast food to go since it's in a food court. Get in, get out, better yet, hand your buddy cash and let them buy it and smell like sauce. It's a problem that plagues ALL FB's is that ventilation is probably to code, but still inadequate. You can't hide that you just went to KBBQ in the same way you can't hide coming here. The beef can be a little chewy and the chicken overdone(breast), I prefer not getting that as the chances of dryness are lessened with dark meat. I wonder if they ever decided to use a pork chop or pork belly bowl. I'd buy that, because chicken, beef and even ribs can get boring, but let's face it this place isn't wowing anyone. Service is fast though the line can be long. For feeling so corporate you'd think the training would be better for the staff as they can't be a tad rude. The sauce cart design needs serious improvement for speed and optimization, like it hasn't had a redesign in years. Prices are still decent. The Flame Broiler is one of my favorite stops for a quick lunch before heading back to the grind. There are several locations throughout San Diego and I am pretty sure this is probably one of the busiest ones as its located right in the center area of Sorrento Valley where the lunch crowd must be massive. This Flame Broiler has limited inside seating with most of it being the outside tables. The kitchen is open to see unlike the other ones I've been to, so you can see them cooking up your food fresh as you order it. The sauces are the same except here they don't provide any fresh jalapenos like a lot of the other ones do. If you're looking for the real hot sauce stuff (like I always use) they keep the green stuff in the back of the store instead of the front. Other than that, its taste just like the other locations. But if it wasn't for that, I would have never tried this place! I ordered the Chicken Veggie bowl ($6.40) which is half a bowl of rice and half a bowl of veggies with chicken. The chicken was really good! Nicely marinated and cooked. I decided to try my meal with the sauces that were provided, which was the hot sauce and the "magic sauce." I asked the worker what the "magic sauce" was and he specifically said it was teriyaki sauce with a hint of magic (whatever that means! Lol). Nonetheless, the sauce is great! I recommend dipping the meat into the hot sauce and then the magic sauce. I think the hot sauce is a bit sour so the sweetness of the magic sauce compliments the hot sauce really well. I'm sad to give this business one star during covid. I know things are rough but restaurants still need to be sharp when it comes to cleanliness and safety. I don't want your germs any day, but certainly not during covid. So to start off, there was no one in the front to take my order and I had to wait for the lady to come out from wherever she was. So...I placed an order for a bowl and a drink. The cashier rang me up and then got my cup and put the straw and lid inside the cup using her dirty hands. Then instead of letting the cook make my bowl, she goes back there and makes it. I asked for a refund and told her I did not feel right having her make my food after ringing me up. She said that she'd washed her hands, but I didn't see it. I don't really care. The people that handle the money shouldn't be making the food. Period. Then instead of giving me a refund like I asked, she told the cook to make the bowl and said, "She's the cook. I'll just have her do it." She should've had the cook do it in the first place. No thanks. Restaurants need to take extra precautions during this time. But seriously...anytime you're dealing with food, you should have high standards. We both liked our orders; the beef and chicken were juicy and quite tasty, and with the brown rice, our bowls were even healthier. I should have checked my order prior to leaving, as I've read other reviews. Upon getting home, checked my order, and our half and half was all white meat chicken. It clearly stated on the receipt what was ordered. The chicken was so dry, flavorless and the sauce did not help at all. It was pretty much in edible. Maybe I should've checked my order prior, but I don't think it's my job to double check, since it clearly says on the receipt what was ordered. Just be sure to check your orders before you leave! I have been to Flame Broiler in the past, but this was the first time at this location. Order #106 and 107 - approximately 12:30pm, July 3rd. Service was fast, as we ordered and received our chicken plates in record time. We sat and ate our meal. After eating most of the meal, my friend found a cockroach mixed in with the chicken. Sadly, she had eaten most of the food already, realizing at that moment, that our dishes were sautéed along with said cockroach. Unsure of how many we had already consumed, we brought our meals to the counter, and asked to talk to the manager for resolution. After a few moments of debate, and having to find our receipts, we were begrudgingly offered a refund. Meanwhile, they continued to take orders and serve the infested meals as if nothing happened. I'm not impressed. Looking for semi-healthy food in the Mira Mesa area is tough, but this was supposed to be our saving grace; lean grilled meats, rice and veggies for all- even Joe the Plumber. Well, the food here is woefully lacking. I got a chicken veggie rice bowl for $5.35. And I got what I ordered. Chicken, veggies and rice in a bowl. That's it. Nothing else. No flavor, no excitement, no Pan-Asian flair. Just chicken, veggies and rice...in a bowl. Oh sure, you're supposed to slather on their "Magic Sauce" which is just a glorified teriyaki sauce as well as their "hot" sauce which is just buffalo chicken wing sauce. What? No sriracha sauce? Sigh...but even those zippy additions don't cut it. Anyway I break into my rice bowl and find that it's 2/3 rice and only 1/3 chicken and veggies. I feel ripped off. For almost six bucks I want to see more meat and more veggies, like half and half here. None of this cutting corners by filling your customer up on rice bullshit. 043 / 100 - 2016 YELP 100 CHALLENGE. I love Flame Broiler, one of the only fast food chains that I adore and love and would probably take a bullet for. The food is delicious, (mostly) healthy, and service is usually very, very quick! This location is located in the plaza next to the 805 freeway in Mira Mesa, which means that it's also located next to A LOT of different tech companies (Qualcomm, CareFusion, etc). My typical order consists of getting the chicken bowl with brown rice. I've tried the beef, half & half, and the chicken & veggie bowl. Personally, I prefer just having the chicken! The veggies take up too much room and sometimes the marinated beef gets kind of "whatever." If this is your first time coming to Flame Broiler, the chicken bowl is a safe choice and definitely a classic. Everyone here is nice, polite, and service is quick. Quality of the food is, for the most part, great. I noticed that the rice can be a little dry sometimes, but if you put in their magic sauce (which is mostly just teriyaki sauce I think?) it helps everything mix together and taste amazing. I do want to note that because it's located next to all these companies, lunch rush is REAL. It gets crowded quick and, if you don't like dealing with lines like me, I'd recommend that you go before the lunch rush or after it (11AM or 1PM). To be honest the lunch rush is where Flame Broiler makes its money, so don't be too surprised by its weird hours on the weekend. When there aren't many people around, there's lots of room in the lot and access to great parking. When a bunch of cars are navigating around it though...? The parking lot gets tiny and nerve wracking, FAST. Overall a great place in a great location. Really hits the spot when I feel like changing up what I'm eating for the week! read more

Efforts to cut food costs and eat healthier have led to a lot less activity on yelp for me lately. Most of the time, eating out just doesn't fit into that equation, but as hard as I try to bring my lunch from home every day, occasionally I forget or I just need to get out of the office with a few friends. In Mira Mesa cheap, healthy combinations are all but nonexistent. Enter Flame Broiler. To be honest, I was a bit surprised by some of the other reviews of this place and the overall 2.5 star rating. A common theme in my reviews comes to mind: expectations. It seems that some expect a petite fillet and side of steamed veggies and rice for their astounding $5-6 dollar investment. Let's get real. For what it is, Flame Broiler comes through. Yes, there is more rice than beef and yes you have to add your own terriyaki and hot sauce (painful, I know), but the food tastes good, my hunger is always satisfied and my wallet thanks me on the way out. For that, Flame Broiler deserves a little more credit. As far a healthy options go, all of their bowls come in around 400-450 calories. Perfect for a quick lunch and, again, I've never left hungry. Give it a try and make your own decision, just make sure your expectations are in line. read more

I work in the "Sorrento Mesa" area. So this is pretty close to my office and is a place I frequent for lunch. I've gotten both the chicken and the beef, and the combo. I like how they show the calories. While it's healthier than other lunch options, it still isn't the best for you. And especially because I douse my bowl in their magic sauce, and magic hot sauce. So good. The hot sauce tastes kinda like a buffalo hot sauce. Pretty d'lish. Cover your whole bowl with it, mix it in with your rice! Wee. I usually get half brown and half white rice to make myself feel healthier. Though honestly, after the amount of sauce I put over my bowl, I can't tell or taste the difference between the white and the brown rice. Hm, maybe I should put less sauce next time? Crazy talk. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty damn sure this place is cheaper than the La Jolla Village location! This is my preferred place to eat for lunch when I don't pack my own. Brown rice, to many, is something that you only choke down (lol "choke down" ... teehe) because your doctor said that its extra riboflavin compared to white rice is super awesome! But for some reason, I can't get enough of brown rice. It tastes and has a nutty feeling and it's awesome. I order Chicken or Chicken and Veggie only since the beef here is a little whack--I can't put my finger on it, but it doesn't taste right. Take as much of their MAGIC SAUCE and SPICY MAGIC SAUCE as you possibly can. Those sauces are liquid crack in small clear plastic containers. You get a healthy, delicious chicken bowl at a very fair price. However, when I compare this Flame Broiler to the one in La Jolla, I'm sorry to say this just gets a mediocre, "Meh." I'd really like to see this Flame Broiler adapt the mini-bowl like the one in La Jolla has. Oh! Also, I'd like to point out is that you have to pump your own teriyaki and hot sauce on your own. It comes with rice (get the brown), chicken, beef, veggies, salad, and orange slices - all for around $7.50. Drench with the magic and hot sauce, and this meal is golden. This location is a zoo on weekday lunches, but i still got my meal in less than 2 minutes. Very little seating inside, maybe 10 spots. Plan on eating outside. A co-worker and I have become quite regular here. The food is great (and pretty healthy too). The service is very quick, we're in and out in about 5 mins, depending on the line.
