The original doesn't come with anything extra saucy so I liked it because you can be intentional about how much you want on it. Teriyaki could be sometimes overwhelming. I wasn't asked white or brown rice! Gnat a problem. The rice is too clumpy! Gnat a problem. The chicken is too tough! Gnat a problem. There are way too many gnats! Gnat a problem. I went a little out of my way to stop by this Flame Broiler in Garden Grove since I was also planning to get a drink nearby. To celebrate the start of the college football season, Flame Broiler was offering 40% off plates, excluding the Korean BBQ Short Rib plate. Between bowls and plates, I prefer getting plates because they also come with a small cabbage salad as well as a half orange whereas bowls do not. This Flame Broiler in Garden Grove is located in Chiana Plaza on the southeast corner of Valley View and Chapman. It's the westernmost business in that plaza closest to Carl's Jr, which has its own lot. Soon after I came inside, there was a customer placing his order, which gave me time to think of what to get. Amongst the plates, I noticed that the Chicken was the cheapest at $12.15. The Tofu plate was 60 cents more, which I found odd because at the two locations closest to me, it's at most 30 cents more. However, they're also more expensive than this location by almost $2, so at least there's a good reason to drive further for this Flame Broiler lol. While I was waiting to order, I pulled out my calculator to determine that between the Chicken and Tofu plates, I'd still earn the same number of points after the 40% off, so I settled for the Chicken Plate. When it was my turn to order, I showed the 40% off a plate offer on my phone to the female employee at the front (Julie?), but she mentioned that particular deal would only work online despite the "Redeem in store" button on my phone. That confused me, but she also mentioned another customer was having trouble with a similar offer. At the locations closer to me, I'd usually provide my phone number, so I gave her my phone number to see if the 40% would come off. Sure enough, it did. I quickly paid, hoping that the register wouldn't reverse course, and asked how long I'd have to wait; Julie estimated about 5 minutes. I think it was more like 3 minutes, but during the short wait, I noticed the receipt had said "white rice" when I would have much preferred brown rice, which is way healthier than white rice. There were several customers who followed me inside, so I really didn't want to be that one customer to hold up the line. When Julie called my order number, I brought to her attention that I wanted brown rice instead of white rice. I almost thought she'd say "too late", but she was able to send my order back and tell the female chef in the kitchen to remake my plate using brown rice instead. I thought it would have been as simple as scooping brown rice onto another plate and emptying the contents from the first plate onto the second, but surprisingly, it was a longer wait than for the first plate! When Julie announced my number again, she asked which sauces I'd like, and I went with the usual one of each except for the Seoul Scorcher, which I must forewarn is not for the faint of heart. I also asked for a water cup. I took the plate to the table in the near corner, but once I removed the lid, I saw a gnat on the edge of the plate! I really didn't want them to remake my plate a third time, and I didn't see the gnat on the food, so I just kept it as is. The cabbage salad already had the sesame dressing on the salad as opposed to the dressing on the side like I usually see. However, the cabbage was finely chopped as if to look like very thin rice noodles. I felt there was less salad here than what I usually get. The half orange was cut up into thirds, which I'm not sure why they had to go through the trouble of that, but at least it did make peeling the orange a little easier? The brown rice, chicken, and steamed vegetables tasted fine for Flame Broiler's standards, but I didn't like how the brown rice was so clumpy. I have a feeling Julie assuming I wanted white rice instead of brown rice may have played a factor in this. I don't think I had ever seen brown rice this clumpy at any Flame Broiler location, and the oddity continued with some pieces of chicken being tough to chew, almost as if there were soft bones randomly in the chicken. But the worst part? The abundance of gnats inside. It was a pretty warm Saturday, and I saw a couple of ceiling fans spinning pretty fast. I had to keep an eye on the gnats and shoo them away pretty frequently while I was enjoying my Chicken plate. Needless to say, it got annoying. There was a steady flow of customers placing their orders, and I didn't recall Julie asking even one of them white rice or brown rice, so I suppose the norm here is that you have to specify "brown rice"; otherwise, it defaults to "white rice". Also, most of them ordered to go as there are only about five tables inside. Overall, I'd only consider a return visit for the lower prices. And I hope they realize that gnats aren't gnat a problem. read more

This is the closest FB to my house. I wasn't going to bother writing a review for it but I just tried their newest item.... the tofu bowl. Growing up with a vegan mom there was nothing worse than hearing the word "tofu". I'd cringe... dry heave...... God how I just wanted some frickin' meat. Fast forward to my older self. Now I love tofu. I cook with it pretty much every week and eat it often at restaurants. My mom the other day was telling me how she just tried the tofu bowl at FB and she loved it. My younger self would have rolled his eyes and made a "pttthh" sound but my aging current self was interested to try it. My 18 year old self would never in a million years guess he'd be ordering a tofu bowl from a teriyaki bowl place and saying he loves it. Man... it's great. They marinate the tofu and then grill it. It has the same chargrilled flavor and caramelization as the chicken except you don't have to worry about any gristle pieces. I had it with the veggies and topped it with my usual ratio of 2 magic sauce and 1 hot sauce and a pile of jalapeños. Fantastic. This location is pretty small but the staff is nice and it's always packed. They have a frequent buyer card but will never tell you about it. You have to ask. I only knew when I saw another customer handing it over. Like all FB the meat is inconsistent. I ordered the regular Chicken and Vegetable Bowl with white meat which I paid extra for. I thought the chicken was not that great. I had some bad, fatty pieces and I don't think those are any fun. I usually will drive to this flame broiler even though it is further away from where I live as it is fresher with chicken cooked as you order & not sitting in a tray all day. The issue isn't the food but the reward program. Today I ordered 2 chicken bowls which one of them was free as I had 10 stamps. When I got my receipt & the other loyalty card back I notice it did not get stamped. I asked the cashier if I could get my stamp for the bowl I had paid for but she denied me saying that since I got a feee bowl I cannot get a stamp. I said that I had ordered 2 bowls & paid for 1 so I should get 1 stamp. The cashier said she was sorry but the policy is if you get a free bowl you can't get a stamp even if you purchased more bowls at the same time. I said well had I known I would of done 2 transaction which is complete stupid but she said yes you could of done that & people do that. This has never happened before & nowhere on the card does it say that. The card actually reads get a stamp with full price purchase of a regular bowl. This is not the first issue I have had with the reward program the other time I got screwed over was when I ordered a regular bowl & a mini bowl & the owner gave me the mini for free & not the regular which again it is not what the card reads plus he never gives me a stamp for the mini bowls yet he gives me the mini for free just to save himself like 50 cents. I have been going to this location 1-2 times a week for nearly 6 months. I have enjoyed the food but have noticed the quality of the meat has been going down - less tender and a bit more gristle. I had accepted this reality and chose to live with it as I appreciated the fact that they have been open for business during these challenging times and are doing their best to continue operations. The the staff was always cheery and polite. I was a loyal customer...until yesterday. Unfortunately, this location has now instituted a policy of limiting the number of sauces you are allowed. Yes, now you are limited to the number of tiny containers of sauce to 3 per sauce per customer. These are the "Magic Sauce", "Hot Sauce", "Double Hot Sauce" etc. (of course prior to Covid-19 you could help yourself to as much as you wanted as there were pumps in each franchise like you would see for ketchup at McDonalds but I digress). These days (likely due to Covid-19) they are pre-packaging them into tiny little containers of less than an ounce so limiting them to 3 each is literally like getting 3 tiny packets of Ketchup with a large order of french fries and if you like ketchup you know that ain't enough. Note: I presume limiting the number of sauces to 3 is a policy of this location only as it is unlikely that this is a franchise-wide edict. Here's how the conversation went down...once my order was ready the host asked me if I would like any sauce and I said, "Yes, 1 Magic and 4 Hot sauce please". Her response was "Sorry I am only allowed to give out 3 of each per customer". When I explained that I wanted 4 of the Hot Sauce I was told again by this person that she was "only allowed to give out 3 per person". Finally, I shared that I simply preferred to have 1 more and that I always use all the sauce I get, again I was met with "I am sorry but I am only allowed to give you 3". I said "By who...the owner?". She just shrugged her shoulders and repeated the line "I am only allowed to give out 3". I told her that I thought that was dumb and that if this in-fact is the case then this would be the last time I will ever come to this location. Having owned and operated my own business before I thought it was imperative that she share my thoughts with the owner. I asked her to please share with the owner our interaction and let him/her know that based on this new arbitrary policy I will no longer be coming to this location. There is a Flamer Broiler in Los Alamitos (which is equal distance from my residence) which will now have my on-going business as I presume they do not have the same policy. I can't imagine that the cost savings of holding back less than an oz of "Hot Sauce" this location is saving is worth losing $16+ a week from a regular customer? The old adage "pennywise pound foolish" comes to mind. Be warned...if you like the hot sauce go elsewhere. read more
