California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara initiated legal action against State Farm in May 2026, accusing the insurer of systemic mishandling of claims following the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. The state seeks to suspend State Farm's license for up to a year and levy millions in penalties. Investigation Findings & Legal Action The Allegations: State Farm allegedly delayed, underpaid, and buried policyholders in red tape. The company handled approximately one-third of all residential claims following the Palisades and Eaton fires. The Violations: An expedited investigation of a sample of 220 claims found 398 violations of the California Insurance Code in more than half of the reviewed cases. The Penalties: The Department of Insurance filed an Accusation and Order to Show Cause, the first step toward an administrative hearing, seeking to suspend State Farm's certificate of authority to issue new policies for up to a year. State Farm's Response: State Farm acknowledged certain errors but characterized them as "unintentional oversights" and "file-specific errors" by claims handlers, and stated it had completed a training to correct the issues. P.S. I am sorry that Mark chose to imply that I would ever INITIATE contact him when he was in the hospital waiting for his son's surgery. It was Mark who responded during that time to my earlier emails - and only THEN did I know he was in the hospital. That kind of misleading accusation about a customer is not appropriate for a professional. I clearly added that I would wait for the results of the lawsuit, but felt it important to mention because my previous review was for HIS GOOD HANDLING OF ME AS A SALESMAN FOR A NEW CUSTOMER, since I had not actually dealt with State Farm before.

This was, without question, one of the most infuriating and unacceptable experiences I have ever…read morehad with any company. I was passed around from rep to rep like nobody wanted to deal with me, and after wasting my time bouncing between departments, I finally got someone on the line--only for things to get even worse. The representative I ended up with was flat-out rude, unprofessional, and downright aggressive. When I told him I didn't have my VIN number on hand, instead of helping me or offering alternatives, he got irritated and actually started cursing at me in Spanish. Let me make this clear: that level of disrespect is absolutely disgusting and completely uncalled for in any customer interaction, let alone when I'm literally trying to purchase a service. I tried calling back to file a formal complaint, hoping someone--anyone--would take the situation seriously. Instead, I was met with nothing but resistance, excuses, and a wall of people who clearly had no interest in helping or holding anyone accountable. It honestly felt like the entire company was structured to make customers give up. I walked away from this feeling disrespected, shocked, and furious. No one should ever be treated this way, and I want others to know exactly what kind of behavior they might face. Avoid this company at all costs. This entire experience was completely uncalled for, unacceptable, and nothing short of infuriating.

I have no accidents, no tickets, and own multiple vehicles. So I guess, don't be fooled by the commercials. I don't know why insurance companies say they're better than each other, trying to justify the expensive amounts they charge, when services they provide ARE THE SAME, but are vastly different in COST. I've had a few different insurance companies over the years, and have had accidents happen, none of which were my fault, but each insurance company really did not live up to what I purchased, meaning they didn't want to live up to the contract, making me force the issues down their proverbial throats to get what I paid for. But to pay an exorbitant rate and get less than satisfactory service isn't a good thing, and after researching existing Freeway Insurance customer reviews, I made a conscious decision to not purchase anything from them. All insurance companies have the same exact coverages that you can get, but their rates are all varied. So you have to decide which one lies to you the least. And which liar you can afford.
