I would not recommend Five Star. They tried to sell me a mid-tier system at a significantly inflated price, marketing it as a "top-tier" unit. On top of that, they never performed a Manual J calculation, which is standard and critical to properly size an HVAC system. This felt misleading and scammy. Zero Stars- Came to our Home through Choice Home Appliance Service -was told it was its circuit board would need approval through insurance was denied because it had not been swept -supposed neglect really just spent over 2000.00 the year before on it for maintenance we even had the original installer another heating service check it said it was still good for another few years / Keep in mind this boiler is 21 years old they break down if we did such an awful job how did it make it for those 20 years. Two technicians came out for our air conditioner. They lied and said it needed replaced for over $14,000.00. Or a quick fix that pet them wouldn't last costing $4,000.00. We called Corley and the technician said out air conditioning unit was fine and told my husband what needed fixed and how to do it, which costs under $100.00. And didn't even charge a fee to come out!! Now our air conditioner works great! These people are liars and I bet we aren't the only folks they've tried this with but anyone gullible, thinking these people are on the up and up, will get taken for thousands!! Unfortunately, my interaction with your team fell significantly short of the standards outlined in your company's pledge -- a pledge which, in part, promises professional, timely, and customer-focused service. This has not been our experience. From the initial service request through to the resolution (or lack thereof), we encountered several issues that contradicted the expectations set by your brand promise. BEWARE: This company just lies to me! The deserve less that 1 star. I have experienced delays in returned calls and appointments, price gouging, dishonesty and unethical practices and statements. My hope is to help others avoid the horrible experiences I have gone through with them. Two of the service managers out of the Greer office have blatantly lied about what they told me they would do. One promised to itemize the work, while the other told me he would not do that. I was charge over $4200 to fix a plumbing leak under my sink. My regular plumber reviewed my invoice and the work and confirmed what I believe was an excessive price. He found that 5 Star charged me $1700 for a $7 part. The replacement parts were minimal. I had 5 big name plumbers review my invoice and job with my own regular plumber and agree that I was overcharged. I am a single, female, senior who was taken advantage of during a daytime/weekday job. The owner hung up on my plumber and told him I knew what I was doing because I signed the invoice. Typical gaslighting of the victim. I couldn't get a respectful reply from 5-Star, so I decided a review might help protect others and call them out on their rudeness and overcharging. They proceeded to offer to replace all of my plumbing for over $30,000. I guess being the victim requires sucking it up and blaming our ignorance to pay such exhorbitant fees. read more

First contact was great! They came out quickly and fixed a problem for very reasonable price, and even on a weekend when other companies were not open. I was so impressed that I bought a new HVAC system from Five Star. My old system was on its last legs. From day one, the AC has not dehumified. It was installed in January so, to be fair, the AC really couldn't be tested then. Once cooling season started, the Five Star team did a wellness check report card. I had concerns about humidity and a few other things. My concerns were ignored and the report card indicated that I had not reported any complaints or concerns. Next, some guy who claimed his name was Joe came out. He identified himself as the service manager. Joe told me that the 62% humidity I have with the new HVAC system is near the normal range of 50-60% (everyone else seems to think normal humidity is 30-50%). When I asked about checking the AC adjustments, something that couldn't be done during cold weather, and asked about static pressure check, Joe said" That should have been done before the installation and we'll do that.". Static pressure check STILL has not been done. Then Joe told me that the fan speed on my system cannot be adjusted (the install manual has details on setting the fan speed). I also had concerns about the ac fan blower turning on and off every five minutes or less. Joe said this is normal. Joe left without doing anything to fix the problem. He chose to pretend that there is no problem. On my third attempt to get the HVAC installation completed correctly, a technician doing the one year review told me something very surprising: the Merit series from Lennox is not designed to dehumidify. I wish the salesman had told me that in the beginning. The salesperson, Caleb, said this new system would dehumidify better than the old one. The folks at Five Star should at least try to agree on which lie they will tell customers. So far I have a new HVAC system that can dehumidify to 62%. My old system, a worn out 20-year old Goodman system, could get humidity down to 50%. The new unit has a delta T of 10 degrees and now runs for three hours or more in the evening when I turn the temp down one degree from 71 to 70. The old system, even when it was nearing end of life, had delta T of 15 degress and would run for 20 to 50 minutes. I could turn the temp down to 68 with the old system. The new system struggles now to maintain 70. In summary, I have a new 12 thousand dollar Lennox HVAC system that does not perform as well as the worn, over 20-year old Goodman system that it replaces. I made at least three attempts during the warranty period to get the problem fixed. Five Star chose to tell me lies and pretend the problem doesn't exist. Now I have a new problem starting this week: the ac runs for hours at a time. I used the clock to time it, up to 3 or 4 hours. It used to cut off and on every five minutes or a bit less. In hot months, when I dialed the thermostat down to 70 at night, the Lennox system would run for maybe ten minutes, 15 at most, then back the five minute off and on cycle. Now, the whole house dehumidifier, a Santa Fe 98 pint unit, runs nonstop. Even then the humidity is 53%. It was 47% until about a week ago. I think the AC is actually creating humidity now because the system setup was never completed. I think the freon is leaking out. The tech used push on solderless connectors to attach the refrigerant lines and said he would put leak detecting dye in. Smart thinking, I guess he knew these solderless connectors would leak. (All three HVAC professionals I talked to said the solderless connectors leak and are no good, and all three rolled their eyes when I said I did business with Five Star.). Now I see all the bad reviews and see that other people have the same problem: Five Star seemingly will not do testing or investigation into a problem they created and certainly won't fix it. This is the most aggravating and disappointing experience I've ever had with a vendor. They should call it "Lie Star" instead of Five Star. How do they stay in business? I think the installation had a one year warranty. Did the Five Star team used stall tactics to run down the warranty clock so they could charge me for work that should've included with the installation charge? It seems that way. I have zero confidence that Five Star will be of any help. They have told me different lies on at least three occasions. I do think they have some very knowledgeable repair techs but corporate policy is apparently to just jerk customers around and not stand behind their products or their work. Btw, Five Star is owned by a private equity firm, Southern HVAC Corporation, which explains a lot. FYI, Lennox does not have much faith in their own products. The parts warranty is only three years and there is no warranty on labor. At estimated $500/hr for labor, even warranty work by 5 star will be expensive! read more

Five Star was quick to come to my mothers home. However it took four trips and two service techs to properly diagnose the problem. The first trip was the initial service call. The first service rep sold my 87 year old mother a new breaker box with a cost of $5,106.20 and after installation he noticed he had left two appliances on the same breaker that should have been on separate circuits. The cost to split the circuit was $2,302.40. At this point she has paid $7,408.60 and still has the same problem., The second rep came out the 3rd time and found the problem in the electrical meter. He did not charge my mother for the repair. If she had been charged to repair would have been approximately $1000.00 per the service rep. I spoke with Chris, the general manager and voiced my concern with a job poorly performed. Chris agreed to issue a small refund. My mother has not received the refund and the office nor Chris will return my calls. I am not an electrician but the meter is the main power source and was looked at on all four service trips. The kitchen faucet they fixed after 6 weeks had to be redone would not warranty work and now the tub fixtures have been replaced they put those on wrong. I reviewed this company on their site, I think, they are very responsive and usually came out before the eta. The first guy, Rocky, fixed a leak in our bathroom and he was AMAZING!!! Told me the cost beforehand, even told me about how I could fix something else cheaper!! Now the heating guys and owner/supervisor have COMPLETELY RIPPED US OFF!!! They came out during Christmas time, last year and it's still not fixed! We're out $800-$900 with them "fixing" it and all of the service calls. Still acting up RIGHT now!!!! read more

Chris came out to re-install gas line for fireplace. It had been disconnected because we had a new deck put in and needed to be off during that work. He was great and very knowledgeable about working with gas lines. He not only reconnected but reconfigured the line so that it is not visible under the deck going into the firebox/fireplace. Did a great job tested everything 2-3 times found a small leak, fixed that and retested. I highly recommend and would use the company and request Chris anytime. Thanks!! read more

Worst plumbing experience ever. Five Star came out to repair a leak from my shower drain. It was leaking a few ounces every time I took a shower. The technician quoted me $1,300 to repair the drain. I was shocked at the cost! He said it would take about an hour and I knew the materials would be less than $100. I didn't have time to find another plumber, so I told him to go ahead. About 75 minutes later the technician came up and said that he couldn't repair the problem because of a structural issue and presented me with a bill for $565!! I couldn't believe it. Not only did they NOT fix the problem, but the leak was 10 times worse after they left. Now instead of leaking ounces at a time, it was leaking quarts at a time. I emailed the company to try to get resolution, but they never responded. I know we all make mistakes, but I judge a person/company on how they handle and resolve those mistakes. Looking at Five Star's reviews, it's clear they won't be in business much longer. The company is a joke. Don't allow them in your house! read more

Editing my original review. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Upon further review of the estimate and some online research we discovered they were marking the part prices up by hundreds of dollars and not being honest in the amount of time it was going to take to get the parts needed for the repair. The parts were available the next day and for hundreds of dollars less at several reputable air conditioning parts places. They also did not offer a portable air conditioning unit while we waited for parts which they usually offer. We got several other estimates and found out that the most expensive part they said needed to be replaced in fact did not need to be replaced. The repair was also very easy and the labor mark up was ridiculous. The parts manager did return our call but ended up sending us an even higher estimate without breaking down the costs as we requested. Long story short they tried to take advantage of us during a giant heat wave and make us pay much more than necessary. We have been without air conditioning for a week and this is just shameful. Anything but five star service. Very dishonest company. read more

I could tell that the quality was good with the exception of the flashing which could have been placed more careful onto the house. It looks as though someone bent it by hand rather than with a tool. All that said I can recommend them because they were professional and I knew at all times what the worker was doing on and around my house due to the updates via text and email. read more

I have to pay someone now to replace the sod they ruined driving their equipment over my front lawn again and again, I have to replace the grass in my backyard but worst of all, I have to dig my 100 foot dry creek bed AGAIN, This is no easy task for a 79 year old woman but I am out of money now. If it were possible to select a no star, that would be my rating. I took the morning off from work to be home and available, up at 6am. Shortly after 10am, I called office just to get an ETA on arrival of technician for first appointment as a new customer. I was informed "the appointment was put on hold and someone tried to call Fri 3:45p" (while I was at work and appt scheduled Monday), left a VM (don't see that on my phone either), and it was noted customer did not respond. I've not lived in the area but a few years and decided to get a local annual service agreement following just a call for service the past few summers to other companies. Seeing the commercials is why I contacted Five Star, but I did find it peculiar being asked to pay for July appointment during initial contact to company in middle of June. I'm not accustomed to being asked to pay for such service that has not been delivered. So now I have wasted taking time off from work waiting for an appointment today (again, asked for payment weeks prior) to be informed today "the service was put on hold." Thank God for a discerning spirit that kept nudging to pay once service was complete. read more

I called during peak summer months to have out AC checked over. The guy charged me $125 to clean my heat pump. I watched him spray it with my hose on camera for 1 minute. Then he said a part was bad and even tried to show me it was in range but would not last. He charged me $310 to replace it. That same part is $17.35 online and can be changed without tools. I took the old one to a parts house and they laughed that it could not be known when it would fail if it tested in range. Came home from work this evening to a cold house, and with temps dipping into the 30s tonight, I called Five Star. We've been clients for seven years and would not use another provider HVAC. Tyler, on call tonight, arrived at my house tonight close to 10 pm and was so polite and helpful that it was like I was his first customer of the day. He got my auxiliary system working within minutes and left me with two space heaters just in case until another technician follows up in the morning. AVOID THIS COMPANY - BUYER BEWARE....BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!! I had a service contract with Five Star for five years (and I was OK with it) until I terminated it for a number of reasons - mostly because they completed an electrical inspection on my (new rental) house that was inspected by a home inspector not 6-months prior and they recommended the entire electrical panel be replaced!!! WHAT??. Complete BS. Now- in my primary residence they installed a new hot water tank in Feb 2020 - the invoice shows the expansion tank is also covered under the 5-yr warranty (luckily I have the invoice as proof). A recent annual inspection from my new contractor showed the expansion tank is full of water and therefore is bad. I contacted Five Star and they agree over the phone the expansion tank is covered and will send out a plumber - they then miss the first appointment by a whole day! I make a phone call - the plumber shows up today.... this is where it gets real... Five Star sends a tobacco-chewing menacing thug (my opinion) who argues with me that the expansion tank 1) nothing is wrong with it (BTW it's full of water) 2.) it's NOT under warranty and 3) the Five Star original invoice is NOT REAL ... and continues to argue with me, the CUSTOMER. I send him off the property only to receive an invoice via email ten minutes later for $357 to replace the tank. It's a $40 tank!! DO THE RIGHT THING FIVE STAR AND HONOR YOUR CONTRACT. Several calls between me and Five Star management ensue, meanwhile I guess the 'plumber' - who is in his van down the street - returns to my door as if nothing is wrong " I am here to install your expansion tank". Really -like I want you on my property. My wife is terrified that this thug they sent may have been here and intimated her while I was not home. To be fair - the manager called me and arranged for the expansion tank to be replaced under warranty - next month. Five Star went above and beyond our needs. Our AC quit on us over a humid and very hot weekend. We called Five Star and they sent someone out that day! At first nothing seemed wrong, but after we turned it on again it got hot and wouldn't cool. We called again and they came out on a Sunday night and found the leak! The guy was able to find and fix the problem after some diagnosis. It was covered under the warranty of the hvac system and they didn't even charge us a service fee. We were so grateful to our Five Star techs who worked tirelessly on our behalf to get the issue resolved. We even purchased a yearly plan with them and it's already saved us hundreds of dollars! Scheduling and service was awful -- wasted 3+ hours waiting for an electrician to show on my first appointment. I finally called and they told me he was still on another job (why didnt they call or text me this info). So I scheduled another visit with the electrician asking for an 8am appointment - they told me their window was 8 - 11. I told them I needed 8 and the dispatcher/scheduler told me that if I selected this specific date that would be good. I finally called them at 8:35 (on that date) to find out where he was -- they had no clue! Said he should be here between then and 11:00 --- with two hours or so of work I would miss a whole day. I used them previously to install a thermostat and the technician Danny came and installed it for $150.. He inspected everything and did not try to oversell anything. Great guy! Now my thermostat went out and I called back five star cause I prefer to stay with good quality professionals. Two technicians came while I had others there and the inspected my unit and to make a long story short, they got my air going and said I needed a thermostat. Ok! Then he said he can put me in a basic thermostat for $749.00 everyone stopped and looked to make sure they heard them right! I was getting another estimate for a different project and the guy simply said they are trying to RIP YOU OFF! They are CROOKS! As I just finished their survey I decided to call them before I posted this and the operations guy said quote" WE DONT CLAIM TO BE THE CHEAPEST AND WE DONT WANT TO BE. Our tenant called Five Star about the AC unit not cooling. The tenant call me and asked me to speak to the technician. The tech told me we had a leak in the evaporator coil and a restriction at the expansion valve. He said we had to replace the condensing unit and the cooling coil. He could not tell me how he determined a leak in the evaporator coil or the restriction at the expansion valve. He quoted a price of $6500 for the replacement. I asked about repair of the existing system and he said it is not possible because it is an R22 system and you can't get R22 refrigerant anymore. I told him you can get R22 as a reclaimed refrigerant and then he said "yes but it is $500/pound. What a crock of bull!!!! R22 is $150/pound He did not testing to determine where the leak is located - evaporator coil, condenser coil of line set. How did he determine there's a restriction at the expansion valve without taking it out of the system? I called someone else that charged the system and it is back up and running. Does it need to be replaced? Yes it is almost 20 years old and it does have a leak but the location has not been determined. These guys are a bunch of crooks. read more

I was under contract with Five Star for approximately 20 years. They replaced a furnace and ductwork for me, and I never had any problems. They were attentive , and responded quickly and to my satisfaction. Recently, my pest control rep said that my condensation pump wasn't working, so I called them. When they arrived, there was both a serviceman and a salesperson in separate vehicles. After checking on the furnace for a while, they asked to enter my house, prepare an estimate, and discuss it with me. I agreed. What ensued was the salesman attempting to frighten me that my furnace was about to blow up my house and needed replacement immediately. He used major scare tactics and gave me prices that I needed to respond to within a week. Due to my fears, I immediately contacted another source and learned that even though my furnace was 14 years old, it had a new motor (1 year old) and probably had several years of service left in it. They had inserted a card into the fan and run the motor up to make the furnace produce more noise. I was very disappointed to have done business with them so long and not be able to trust them. At almost 80 years old, we should not have to abide companies using scare tactics to make a sale. I have terminated my relationship with Five Star and have found a dependable replacement that will treat me fairly. Be forewarned. read more

When my home warranty company could not get someone out to our house for 6 DAYS in 90+ degree SC heat, I knew we had to go with a different option! I called Five Star at 9am on a Friday and they had a service technician out the SAME DAY. Everyone I spoke with, from the initial call, to the lady in dispatch, to the service tech were so friendly, polite, and helpful. I was blown away by the service. Have not experienced anything close--ever! Donnie Davis was our technician and he was so personable, friendly, and most importantly, HONEST, about what our options were. I cannot recommend this company enough. I will not be going with anyone else for our HVAC or plumbing needs going forward! Wonderful experience! read more
