After 16 years, my furnace bit the dust. The technician from five star came by on a troubleshooting call got us running again for a couple days until we can get the unit replaced. He explained his estimate which was fair and competitive. He even showed me some ways to save some money. We bought the new system that night. Would give negative stars if possible. Got a new furnace installed one week ago. It started malfunctioning within 48 hours. Problem is still not resolved. They keep sending people out to fix it. Sent a letter to the company after a bad experience, but did not receive a response. I always like to give the company the benefit of the doubt and an opportunity to rectify a problem. A bad review is the last course of action. In November, they came out as our furnace was not working. The tech almost immediately diagnosed the problem as a cracked heat exchanger. He misquoted the age of our system and recommended replacing it for $13,900. Got a second opinion, who fixed the furnace for $800. The heat exchanger was fine. The problem was the board, which Five Star had replaced a few years back. Do not trust this company. We now wonder if other repairs they have done were overpriced or even necessary. Incompetence or Fraud? I have waited exactly 6 months to post this, as I wanted to be sure my emotions were not affecting my input. I had a new thermostat installed by another company, but it was not working properly. They admitted they were not real familiar with the Trane heat pump systems. I called 5 Star, and Anthony showed up. I told him I had heard a strange sound so I turned off the breaker before calling them. This was likely what set the plan in action. Anthony determined that all the boards, inside and out had been "blown by previous install of the thermostat and had been wired incorrectly". He then advised that it would be $10,000 to replace all the boards, but he recommended that we replace the whole system for $22,000. Given that it was working, albeit not quite right, that sounded off, and I wanted another opinion. Anthony was very persistent, calling me twice more that afternoon, looking to book the full system replacement. Is this a technician with a sales quota? I would bet a ton it is. It got worse. I called in another Trane rep company. The first thing they did was ask who chopped up the control board. Second, they determined that the breaker switch itself was probably bad, as there was not sufficient power going in to the system. Anthony had literally cut components off the board - picture below. The second company had to replace that board, and they replaced the breaker in the panel. Works fine since then. So all the boards were not blown, and the system did not need to be replaced. BTW, when I asked them what a full system replacement would cost, they estimated $15K. So I PAID 5-Star to create damage- either by overt sabotage or gross incompetence. My efforts to get things corrected by 5-Star were completely dismissed. They would not even refund what they charged me. I would not trust them with a toaster. Below is the picture of the furnace board with resistors cut ... the $600 board I had to buy courtesy of 5-star. My advice is as I have been warning my neighbors...(the whole subdivision has heat pumps -no natural gas here) avoid 5-Star if at all possible. read more

I've used 5 Star for many years now, but something's changed... I scheduled a maintenance call for both furnace and AC a few weeks ago on a 17 year old system that has been rock solid reliable and well maintained. First thing the tech did was to "inspect" my heat exchanger and within seconds announced that it was cracked. No tests done, just a visual inspection with a scope camera. He immediately gave me an outrageous quote to replace the heat exchanger or replace the furnace for 12k! I got 2 more quotes. Both said the exchanger was probably fine. I'm a proactive guy and prefer to replace aged equipment before I have to. So during the install of a new Trane furnace, the tech examined the heat exchanger and it's perfectly fine. My attempts to discuss with 5 Star have gone unanswered. Watch out for private equity HVAC companies... read more

My air conditioner stopped working Mark came out and quoted 3400.00 for the repair after saying it could be the capacitor. Told me he would give me a deal to rebuild my unit that R22 wasn't sold anymore, yet it is still sold. After he left we called another Air conditioning repair place to get a 2nd opinion. They said the capacitor was bad and they replaced other and it works fine. If I would have used Fivestar I would have been ripped off for 3400.00 in repairs versus a bad capacitor for 140.00. Please beware of this place. If you want to be ripped off have Mark come fix for you, I'll never call them again. If you want a good company call Bryant AirCondionong. Bought a new furnace and A/C in December and had a service checkup on it with in a month and it was not operating correct due to install was incorrect. Sales rep did not want come out and look at it with in 2 weeks and I had to call home office to get a service tech come out just to find I was correct. I called and received a $75 labor only quote for a Tech to show up for the installation of a new Ecobee thermostat in my two year old house. Imagine my surprise when the invoice came to $275 for the almost two hour job of which an hour was the Tech troubleshooting why the 2nd stage operation of the furnace was no longer working properly. Turns out, a wire to the new thermostat was damaged during his installation. I called their office to request some type of relief on the invoice amount but was told it was a flat fee regardless of how long it took. Wish I would have known that up front. Keeping the above in mind, the rating would have been higher because the Tech was very friendly and the new thermostat is currently working properly. read more

Terrible experience with Five Star Heating & Air, Inc. The technician indicated that the unit was outdated (17 years) the heat exchanger was cracked and leaking CO2, and that we needed to immediately purchase a new unit for $9,600. Admittedly, I was bit skeptical about his assessment, so I called another HVAC company for a second opinion. Fortunately, the second company was able to fix the unit for $1,200 and confirmed that the unit was not leaking CO2 and was installed 14 years ago. Needless to say, I was not amused with the misleading information from Five Star Heating & Air, Inc., and you should AVOID using this company for ANY services. read more

I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone looking for repairs on air conditioning, or furnace units. A tech from 5 Star came out and compiled less data than what I had explained over the phone; the motor wasn't working correctly. The tech ended up suggesting a new furnace and gave a quote. At this point, I figured, "Gotta get some quotes for comparison." Called a second company: Guy came out, tugged on the motor belt and the motor started. He put some lube in the holes and said, "Call me when this thing actually fails and I'll give you a quote." Maybe a fluke by 5 Star, or maybe the company has changed directions. They have been around for a long time. If nothing else, they are good at making money. Second star is given for the nice reception staff when placing the call. read more

Had another company out who did the work for 1/4 of what their bid was. Bill came out to check on my air conditioner not cooling and said that i probably had a leak and he needed to use a special dye and light to find this leak. He said this was the only way even though I had asked him several times on his first visit if he could check for a leak by other means. He said it would take at least 24 hours and would need to come back with the special light to find this leak. He also charged me for 2 pounds of freon which i questioned since i have a leak in the system and didn't want to pay for something that is continuing to leak. When he came back for this return service call, he used a sound machine (not a light) to check for the leak. I was shocked! I asked him why he didn't do this on his first call, and why used the dye when he had this other machine to detect the problem! He charged for $415 and i still have the leak! Barb in the office said that they would make this right but it's been a week and no one has gotten back to me. read more

I have been a customer of Five Star for years but never needed to call them for an emergency. Someone was able to come out today when the gas company shut off my gas due to a leak. I didn't even know they offered this service. Marty came out and fixed all of my issues. As usu. he was professional. He assessed all of the issues and fixed them all. It took some time but he kept checking in with me to let me know what was going on and showed me what was wrong and was fixed. This company is great! We came home Sunday (8/4/20) to 89 degrees in the house. The AC had quit while we were on vacation. Monday morning they sent Isaac out to diagnose the problem (professional & pleasant). The compressor was shot, it was old (1993!) and a replacement was needed. After determining what we wanted, he wrote it up, made a call to his boss and had it ordered. A whole new system was installed yesterday. We ended up also getting a new furnace (it was from 2001), humidifier (it didnt work when we bought the house in '89) and a air scrubber. The install was done by Adam & Dave and they were terrific, they arrived at 8:20 with equipment here about 10 min later. They took apart the old system, removed everything, laid new platform for compressor, and got the new system installed, hooked up to our thermostat, cleaned up and had it running in 5 hrs. They took all the old equipment, boxes & assorted garbage with them. They were knowledgable, answered all our questions, they were professional, & neat. He took the time to be very thorough in his explanations and provide us with a few different options. He was very considerate of our thoughts and how we generally heat and cool our home and took those notes into consideration when he made his final recommendation for what we should purchase. They didn't know anything about the Trane unit they installed for us and for a month we went back and forth with them to get it up and running correctly. When we truly knew they didn't know what they were doing we called Five Star. They came into a mess and a mess that wasn't theirs. They handled this horrible situation with such compassion and grace. Poor experience to say the least. Bought a furnace and air system several years ago. Salesman up sold me on a dehumidifier that has flooded my laundry room no less than five times. Was recommended this shop by Dad's friend who had a furnace/ac installed by them -- someone who got at least 10 quotes before selecting them. Impressed with their attention to detail and suggesting innovative things I had not thought of, and other HVAC installers did not suggest. Furnace/AC quote was reasonable and competitive to other companies, but expensive none-the-less. No installation services yet. They only sell Trane brand (Ingersoll Rand). Trouble with 5* is if you want the Trane 10 year labor warranty, you have to pay yearly maintenance and can only have the service done by 5* or someone *they* select. This is in stark contrast to the Amana 10 year labor warranty you pay once up front and can have it serviced by *any* HVAC shop authorized to work on that equipment and Amana recommends but does not require annual maintenance by a shop. read more

Five Star did an amazing job with my new furnace and A/C install. They did things beyond what was necessary (like moving my existing venting back 1 foot so it was flush with the wall just to save me space (don't know why it wasn't originally installed that way when the house was built but they fixed it without me even asking!) They also were the most competitively priced and offer a 10 year full warranty as long as you use their service plan (it's a little higher at $240 but in my opinion worth it since they do quality work and they give you the warranty with it). The installers Dave and Adam were great and I didn't have issues when it came to my inspection. The other Dave who fine tuned the unit and came out during the village inspection is a fountain of knowledge and I enjoy talking with him as well. We replaced an old 80% single stage furnace with a new Trane 90+% variable speed fan furnace installation done for us by Five Star Heating and Air on 10/29/16. I was uncertain as to how I would like the final product and would it be worth the extra expense. I am extremely pleased to say it was absolutely one of the best things that has ever been done to this home of 39+ years. The difference in the comfort, both humidity and temperature stability, is amazing; not to mention the quieter operation with nearly silent continuous fan induced air circulation. Bill was our sales rep. Of all the companies we contacted, he was the only one who surveyed all the rooms, and laid out the specifics and some options and how they would affect the heating/cooling operation. In our case, none of the options were extreme and some in fact I performed myself with his blessing and offered advice. We passed on one of the options Bill offered to help insure our 100% satisfaction (larger cold air return). When the installer arrived, I had the room available for him and he completed the install in one day. He left the room as clean if not cleaner than when he entered and gave a quick lesson in thermostat operation. After 3 months of use, and January's coldness utilizing the 2nd stage burner and a much higher fan speed, the fan noise we heard at the cold air return just off the furnace did increase, as it did with our old furnace. After my call to Bill, a service person, Issac, returned to our home, reconfigured our cold air return and successfully reduced the air movement noise we experienced . The completed job could not be better if I had done it myself (which of course I couldn't) but you've got the idea of just how great I feel this project ended up.
