UPDATE: I feel that my past reviews are simply not accurate lately. The past two deliveries took a lot longer than the quoted delivery time. Last time we were quoted 1 hour and it took 1 1/2 hours. The driver did apologize. Last night we tried again. Quoted 45 minutes and it took almost 90 minutes for the delivery. Not sure if it's the driver or just a coincidence that he was the same driver for both late deliveries. I was quoted $41.06 (Asian girl who I never spoke with) and always give the driver a $10 tip so I gave him $51. I looked at the receipt and the total says $42.77. So now the tip was closer to $8. Doesn't sound like $2 is much but if he were to get $2 less on only half his deliveries it would probably be at least $20-$30 less in tips. I was in the food business and 80% of your sales were delivery so I know. Plus they charge $2.50 for delivery, not sure how much goes to the driver. Food is always good. But the service seems to miss the mark these past few times. We have ordered from here more than 20 times in the past 4 years.....maybe time to see what else is out there. read more

Here are the positives: the portions were a generous size, prices were reasonable and there were over 200 items on the menu. The restaurant is fairly cozy with a clean restroom. First thing I noticed was how kind and friendly the lady at the front was. She was extremely helpful with assisting me navigating what to order. The food came out hot and was delicious! The food taste and quality exceeded my expectations for chinese food in Tom's River. My only complaint is I wished they added the word "Bbq" in front of the Roast Pork Chow Fun for the menu as I was expecting crispy skinned roast pork. Don't know if there is a new owner, but I have to say I don't agree with the negative reviews here. I'm a foodie, and critical at that. I recently ordered beef and broccoli to eat in, and the owner, Jennifer, was extremely friendly and helpful. The broccoli was cooked just right, not too done, and she made sure to check on me as I ate. The place is one of the cleanest Chinese restaurants I have been to. If you are too lazy to go there to get your food, well, mistakes do happen. I'm sure if you told them about it at the time, they would have made good. Five star is hands down the best Chinese food In ocean county. Everything is made to order and delicious. The owners take a lot of pride in their food and don't cut corners. The restaurant is clean, everything is broken down and cleaned 3xs a day, I am an employee and know 1st hand that if they feel it isn't Juusst right they will scrap it and remake it. They have the best crab Rangoon! I can't say enough good things about this place. I've been going to Five Star for years. The food is not greasy but is fresh and tastey. Its the best chinese food ive ever had...honestly no joke. The owner is super nice and aims to please with any order you have. The counter help and drivers for delivery are all nice too and remember you with a smile upon return to restaurant or delivery. The owner will cook your dish the way you like, just ask...Hot, not hot, mild...if you want a different sauce...anything... Try the shrimp dumplings, bourbon chicken, crab Rangoon, shrimp with mixed vegetables, General tsao and even the lo-mein and shrimp egg Foo young...very good...rice is always cooked perfect...even the brown rice which is I get sometimes is absolutely perfect...just try 5 Star you'll see or should I say you'll taste the difference from the other not so good Chinese restaurants. It's funny how we end up eating in a random chinese spot somewhere along our drive. It's owned (?) by a cute little family with a cheery dude running the front. Absolutely quaint and the type of place we just don't really see around our way back in LA. Food was bountiful and tasty. Is it the best I've ever had? Maybe not. Although the owners' children are wonderfully cute and engaging, the lunch I had the other day was something less. The facility is bright and airy, with one table covered with kids coloring books and toys, while the young siblings sit at another playing and openly welcoming customers with their innocent cheeriness and curiosity. There are a few open tables for eat-in diners, but the operation is clearly designed for take-out. I ordered my first visit standard General Tso's Chicken, which came with Pork Fried Rice and a small bowl of Wonton Soup. The soup was a basic beef broth with thick dumplings stuffed with some form of spiced beef. After one bite and a couple of spoons of the liquid, I pushed it aside. Not worth eating. The Chicken had not been frozen for a long time, but certainly was not fresh. A cross section of one of the chunks disclosed a fairly heavy breading to chicken ratio of about 50/50; not ideal, but not out of the ordinary. The sauce was made with hot chili powder or sauce, but without actual mini red peppers that are requisite for the taste to be alive with hot flavor. Thus, the sauce was muted and on the sweet side of the General's preferred hot/sweet continuum. The Fried Rice followed the shortcut of many such places that make a large pot of rice early in the day using bouillon with artificial coloring as its taste base. Not ideal. Five Star Chinese Restaurant needs to pay more attention to cleanliness and recipe detail, even for a Chinese-American hybrid shop; ie., the crispy noodles used for dipping in duck sauce was left in a fortune cookie cardboard box on one of the tables, with the oil stained box in plain view. Using tongs to remove them is a nice touch, but leaving them exposed all day is not such a healthy thing to do. The people here are lovely. Very friendly and forthcoming. If they tightened up quality control, they could really have something special. read more

Their service is fresh, fast and consistant; it always tastes great. This is a family run establishment and they take a lot of pride in their food and service. While it seems to be mainly a take-out operation in the evening, they also do a brisk business at lunchtime for sit down meals. Their delivery staff are super-friendly and courteous. I found Five Star on Yelp and it didn't disappoint in the slightest. As other reviewers mentioned it is a small family owned business and their children were (mostly) quietly playing in the corner. For a nine and seven year old they were absolutely amazing. Although we were the only people dining in for the 30 minutes or so we were there they must have taken at least 10-12 pick-up/delivery orders while we were there. Because they were so busy the little girl rung us up on the register (having no problem with the modifications I requested) and brought all our food to the table, including extra napkins and sauce without having to be asked or told. Honestly we had way better service from her then we get from most adults! The food was all fantastic and we received enough to feed an army instead of just the two of us. We had two combination plates, one orange chicken and one sweet and sour chicken with rice and egg rolls; egg drop soup; and Chinese donuts. Everything was served in to-go containers which was great since we took so much with us. I had never had Chinese donuts before.. They were amazing! After my last update taking away a star for the delivery time, since I've ordered twice more and have gone back to the restaurant once (yes within two weeks) and we just can't get enough!! The delivery time has now gone down to 45 minutes which is totally reasonable considering it arrives piping hot and is always fresh. The shrimp fried dumplings are addicting!!
