Went to this place for the first time mostly for the outdoor seating. Instantly when we sat down, we noticed the waiter acted like he did not want to be there. He hardly spoke and seemed annoyed at any request we had. We ordered, got a few things incorrect on our order when our food came but we didn't complain except for asking for some bacon that was supposed to be on a burger. He brought one piece of bacon out on a plate. Also, I noticed a bunch of brown spots on my lettuce as I started to eat it and I didn't even dare to ask the waiter for a new one because of his attitude. Sometimes blind dates are the best. You don't know quite what to expect and your 'date' doesn't have to live up to the lofty expectations you've built up in your mind. I've heard about five-0-three ever since it opened in West Linn over a year ago. Upscale dining in the 'burbs. Word on the street, from my friends and neighbors who've dined there, was "expensive, but good." So I finally made it there for Happy Hour. My 'date' with five-0-three suffered from a severe lack of chemistry. It was the guy who is great on paper (drives the right car, wears the right clothes, is environmentally conscious and makes all the right noises about serving locally sourced foods, etc.), but then you walk in the door and nada. Nothing was wrong, but nothing was quite right either. The restaurant is located in the West Linn Central Village, so it is new construction with high ceilings and modern art. Menu is small, but interesting. Not your basic fare, but it was easy to find several entrees on the dinner menu that sound appealing (friends recommended the scallops). Since I was just there at Happy Hour, I sat at the bar. The bartender was brusque. Professional, but not personable. They have about 10 items on the Happy Hour menu and it requires that you also order a glass of wine for $5. "Substitutions politely declined." So I had a glass of white wine, a Spanish chardonnay, and ordered the Korean spare ribs with spicy slaw. A little on the crispy side, but fine. The restaurant decor I would classify as masculine. Lots of black leather and solid colored walls with high impact art pieces and cloth sails hanging from the ceiling. I think it is best suited for a nice business lunch or dinner, but not the type of place where I'd want to woo someone. So, after starting off kinda ugh, things improved when the bartender brought me some pieces of dark chocolate to eat while I finished my wine. They also have a nice patio area out front which would be good for warm summer nights since the restaurant is set back off of Highway 43. So this is a 3.5 review. Nice, but didn't rock my world. I'll be back for a full meal next time to give the restaurant another chance to wow me. After all, this place is perfect for me on paper. And next time I'll bring my hubby since a meal is always better shared. read more

Starting with the good: Music. From there, pretty much downhill. The owner, John, practically yelled us for asking for more olive oil. The first amount we got was less than two spoonsful. We asked the waiter if we could have more. The owner himself came out and told us something to the effect that olive oil was very expensive at $275 a case (which is not expensive at all) and if we wanted more he was going to have to charge us. He basically ruined our evening. So much so that we considered cancelling our order. NEVER AGAIN. Too bad as we live in the area. We were really hoping for it to become our spot. read more

Tried once for dinner, was informed we needed reservations. Made reservations a few days ago and went for dinner. I don't know if this is normal at Five-O-Three, but food that is usually savory was extremely sweet. The French fries in the steak frites tasted like they had been sprinkled with sugar, like a sugared doughnut. The cooked kale, which really only takes butter and salt to taste great, was also very sweet, maybe trying for a sweet-and-sour sauce? The risotto (dinner entree, not a side dish) was so sweet that the person gave up. The special of the day, and the steak in the steak frites, were the only dishes that escaped sugar. (The steak was tough, but not sweet.) Having never eaten there before, we couldn't tell if fries with a sugar topping was normal and the risotto was done that way on purpose, or if someone had refilled the chef's salt shaker with sugar, either by accident or as a gag. Almost the only thing that wasn't too sweet was the dessert. Also, if you have difficulty if a restaurant is too loud, though this restaurant seems intended to be a "fine dining" kind of place, outside when there is live music, you can't have a conversation at your table (sitting about two feet apart) without having to shout, and the inside music is also rockin' and set loud. The decor inside is all hard surfaces, nothing to absorb sound, and it was loud like a cafeteria plus music. Our waitress couldn't even hear us when we ordered, like happens at a crowded down-home bar or busy pizza place, and that's the way the sound stayed all through dinner, hastening us on our way. We eat out a lot and are pretty consistent in terms of added items like salads or drinks, and it was also the most expensive meal we've had lately. If the food had been perfect, we probably wouldn't have noticed the price, but those sugar-sprinkled French fries, tough beef and the fact that one of us didn't get a full dinner because he couldn't take the sweetness level, made the price more of a standout. It's possible that if you go when there is no live music and eat outside, you can have a quiet meal, but for the other reasons, we probably aren't going to go again. read more

If I could give a .5 star, I would. We've been wanting to try this restaurant since moving to West Linn, as it is known for being one of the more upscale dining experiences here. We luckily got a reservation for Valentine's Day and had one of the worst dining experiences in a long time. The greeter was nice and we were seated quickly for our 6:30 reservation - however it appeared that they got behind very quickly - as there was a lot of time for us to people watch and observe the wait staff while waiting 20-30 min between each course. Clearly the slow service backed up the entire place. The waitress was not friendly, clearly very busy, but failed to be inviting or explain how the menu worked from the get go. Barely ever checked in throughout the meal either. Our appetizers did come out quickly, and were the most flavorful course of the whole meal. My husband's first course of lobster bisque came with a very large piece of paper in it?! Seemed like a piece of a piping bag or something. The waitress poured it into the bowl and walked away like nothing was wrong. Disgusting! While waiting between courses we watched people send food back and get up to leave from tables throughout the restaurant. The owner attempted to bring a plate to our table which was not ours and then we watched him try to put our dishes on the table next to us. The main courses were also very underwhelming. Nothing was seasoned well, literally no salt anywhere. Everything was bland. The sauce was broken for the lamb I got and my husband's steak had almost no sauce at all. I thought dessert might be a redeeming course, however the passion fruit cake was miserably dry and the chocolate mousse my husband got looked like it had been dumped on the plate. This is a perfectly serviceable restaurant. The food is higher in price and sometimes quality, but sometimes uneven in execution. The menu is fairly unimaginative, but it is likely a much appreciated restaurant in the area. It's a great place to eat out if you need a step up and don't want to go far. But for my money and food preferences, there are other options within a reasonable distance. It feels like the restaurant is striving to be worth its pricepoint. We had a wonderful lunch at Five-O-Three. Very elegant interior for being located in a semi strip mall. Lots of black leather, semi dark, colorful artwork, etc., that kind of elegant. We read that the chef was from New Orleans and put that special kick into the menu. I hadn't had fried chicken in decades and decided to splurge: it was magnificently served over creamy and decadent mashed potatoes. Quite a large portion too considering so many Yelpers think the prices are a tad high. I thought the price to value ratio was right. Our waiter was very friendly and kept an eye on our wine glasses, ready to refill in a moment. Not intrusive at all. The tables in the dining room are a little close together but it wasn't busy the day we were there so no eavesdropping on the table closest to us (I love to eavesdrop!) I guess I had higher expectations. First, the location and atmosphere was acceptable. The menu didn't identify what was gluten free and when I asked the waitress, it was clear she didn't know either. The waitress looked at the menu and had to ponder, what was GF. Ordered an appetizer which was ok, but took over 30 minutes to arrive at the table. Don't worry, the main course didn't come for 30 minutes after that either. You would have thought they were busy, but three tables and 5 people at the bar, yet an hour wait for a mediocre pizza. So I am really torn on this review. I love the location, the patio, the live music, and some of the menu items, and some of the staff are great, BUT the bar menu (in particular the cocktail offerings) is terrible. It's like they've done NO homework at all. For a restaurant of this type and price point they absolutely should have at least one seasonal cocktail and really should have a completely seasonal bar menu/happy hour menu. It is absurd for this type of upscale restaurant in the Portland surrounds to be offering Blue Ribbon Pabst, lemon drops, and god awful Cosmos. So boring! They need local liqueurs (Pendleton Whiskey, Aviation Gin, etc) and great seasonal cocktails. Their bartenders either need to go do some research from great spots like the Lake Theater, House Spirits, Teardrop, Bible Club, Pepe le Moko, etc OR they need better creative inventive bartenders. Just super disappointed everyone I go regardless what cocktail I order. That said the Mac and cheese is yummy. read more

This restaurant positions itself as an upscale-ish trattoria kinda thing. It is not. I had a lamb cavatelli and my wife had scallops. It is truly amazing how oily both dishes were. I used the whole cloth napkin to absorb the residue in my mouth and it's still there. We commented to each other that the nearby McDonald's or Burgerville would have been a healthier, cheaper and less greasy choice. I give it two stars because the dishes were clean. We went to see a favorite music group and booked 2 weeks in advance. When we arrived, we were offered a table in the parking lot or behind a bush. We could not see anything. I'm not sure I have the words to describe what an absolutely delightful dinner we just had at 503 Restaurant in West Linn. it was a rainy Monday evening and the ambiance was warm and inviting. The customer service was outstanding. We didn't have to wait for anything. The food was scrumptious from the first bite until the last. My husband started with the sweet potato soup. OMG, so good. My salad was also good but I may have a bit of soup envy. Dinner was beef Bourguignon and Two Way Heritage Chicken. I think we both died and went to heaven. Seriously, so good. The best part was this was in our neck of the woods! We didn't have to drive to Downtown Portland or NE Portland for an amazing meal. This was by far one of the best meals we have had in years. This falls somewhere between three and four stars for me. I'll start by saying that the service was very good. It was a slow night and our waiter also appeared to be the bartender, and I got the impression possibly the manager as well. He was genuinely friendly and professional with none of the snooty attitude that can sometimes accompany finer service. Three of our four meals were pretty good, Two of us ordered the surf and turf at $32. At that price point I knew they would be a pretty small filets, and they were. One of us got a fairly tender filet with large juicy shrimp, and it wasn't me. My filet, ordered medium rare, looked the right color inside but was a little dry and chewy. My shrimp were also chewy, dry, and overcooked. The roasted potatoes were nice but the green beans were far too al dente. If you like greens that way, great, but I like them a little more tender. The interior is nice, but the design and style feels a bit outdated. The music choice was odd and didn't feel quite right for the dimly lit room. Also, not a single candle was lit on any of the tables. I even commented on it when another person delivered our appetizer and she just laughed it off. The last thing is the wine pricing. As someone very familiar with the restaurant business, it's usually the case that ordering a bottle will be a dollar or two less expensive than ordering four glasses (of the same wine). A bottle is roughly 4.5 glasses of wine. Even if the bottle isn't less expensive, it's not usually more expensive than ordering four glasses. Not the case here. Our wine was $11 by the glass, but $48 by the bottle. Overall I think we will give it another shot and maybe even try their happy hour, which looked good. We like to support local businesses and we definitely need more decent dining options in West Linn. read more

We've gone a few times now, and appreciate having a date night option that's a bit classier than most of the ultra-casual grub spots in this neck of the woods. Service has always been really attentive and responsive to our son's food allergies (eggs & nuts in his food could put him in the hospital). I'd say the food is a little on the expensive side for what it is. (Though, admittedly, we're a family on a budget.) And the menu doesn't get especially creative or exciting. But everything we've had here has been a nice version of what you expect, and there is enough variety in the options that this is one place we can always agree on going to - knowing they have something for whatever we're in the mood for. read more

We wanted to go to dinner near our house, and having just moved here from the city, we wanted to try something new. We came in with our 1 year old on a Monday night during the dinner hour, and we're given the "pretty woman treatment"- you know, the scene where she walks into the pretentious store ready to buy, but was only given the cold shoulder? Now, I know it's not exactly marketed as family friendly, but to be stared at by staff, and sat in the back by the kitchen( in an empty restaurant) ..it was a little off putting. The food- meh. Super pricey, and not anything awesome. The paella was good, but my sons quesadilla was definitely made with Kraft singles, and I guess the one advantage of sitting practically in the kitchen was I got to see the chef spray my food with Pam....don't get me wrong, we really aren't picky diners, or really, foodies even, but to charge $25 a plate for mediocrity, really doesn't change my perception of suburban dining. read more

Sadly, one of the worst dining experiences ever. My girl and I were excited to try a new place and we were very disappointed. We arrived on a Friday night around 8pm. It wasn't busy, and we got a seat outside. They server was a very nice girl, but the food was awful. My lady ordered the sea bass special and I ordered the steak med rare. The food took a very long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it appeared to have sat in the window under the heat lamp for too long. The fish was overcooked and chewy, and my steak was well done. Even more disappointing, was that the manager, whom we saw conversing with other customers, did not come over to our table. Being in the service industry, I know how important it is to ensure each guest is having a quality experience. I do not recommend this place and am sure not to let any of my family and friends eat at this establishment. read more

If you are looking for a quiet, intimate, nice dinner, this is a good choice. I would have rated them 5 stars but the food has declined somewhat since they discontinued the Prix Fix menu. Their food is still excellent for most dishes however. The gnocchi is crisp and just right. The aged steak, if you come when it's on the menu, is to die for. And the scalloped potatoes are divine. The presentation of all of their dishes is beautiful. I do find putting a full meal with multiple courses together can become very expensive (hence my regret that the prix fix is gone). However, I look forward to trying the new small plates they plan to offer. Be sure to check their website menu before going as the selection sometimes changes. read more

I'm surprised that this place has a lower rating on Yelp because I thought the food and service was at least 4 if not 5 star quality. I went here with my boyfriend and his family while we were visiting over the holidays. It was a nice surprise to find this place in the neighborhood and not have to drive into downtown Portland for high quality food. We started with a few cocktails. My gin martini with a blue cheese stuffed olive was very tasty and I LOVED the olive. I almost asked for more in my next one. My boyfriend had the manhattan off the menu, which was well balanced and had a great cherry in it... not the usual kind. My scallops were wonderful. I'd say they are the main reason for me writing this review. They were served with a celery puree that was super delicate. I don't even like celery, but it was great with this dish and the perfectly seared scallops... yum! My boyfriend had the paella. I'm always hesitant to try paella at non-spanish restaurants because I lived in Spain for a while and I'm a bit of a snob about correctly-prepared paella, but this one was good. Great texture on the rice and a good selection of meat and seafood. My boyfriend said he could eat it every day. The service was friendly and attentive. Our table was arguing about how to pronounce "spaetzle" properly (I think it's shh-pay-tzle, but I guess I'm wrong) so the server went and checked with the chef, who came out with a tiny spaetzle appetizer and the correct pronunciation.
