If you follow/read my reviews here on Yelp, I always mention being cursed with finding weird things in my food, like hair! I haven't had five guys in years and decided on a trying the veggie sandwich. I got it with fried peppers and onions, pickles, mayo, lettuce and tomato. First couple of bites I thought how crisp the fried veggies were, as in, barely sauteed Not the best in my opinion. Secondly, I found a large black hair tucked in my sandwich. Ugh. :( (please see pictures for reference). I'm sorry-but really not sorry...but as soon as I find hair in my food, its a done deal for me, and I rarely if ever give establishments a second chance, which leaves me to giving this place a one star! read more

My family and I dropped in last week at dinner time and were very pleased with our burgers. It was juicy, topped with fresh ingredients, just well grilled and our order was ready within 5-7 minutes. We munched on peanuts while we waited. My husband and I both had the single pattie cheeseburger with all the works. I added BBQ sauce to mine which made it a bit too saucy. However, I thought the pattie was juicy and tender. I agree the bread was a little soggy after it was wrapped in the aluminum foil and soaked up the steam. Our daughter had the grilled cheese. Good that they have kids options. They also had hot dogs. I liked the fries. What is not to like about fresh cut fries that are about 1 cm in diameter? I got the plain to dip in Ketchup. I subsequently heard from a friend that the Cajun fries are amazing. Will try next time. My only complaint is that they do not serve milkshakes. It seems like something a burger joint should have!!! read more

When out in the cooking cutter shopping district known as The Trainyards, I had scoped out places to fuel mine and my wife's rampant consumerism, and Five Guys seemed like a reasonable option. This would be my wife's first time at one, and t hey were fine when I ate there for my first time when in the US for work, so I thought I'd see how a Canadian franchisee would be. Like any Five Guys, it's very minimalist with its red and white colour palette, and copies of reviews of FG from Florida to Washington, DC are what passes for decor; they seem amiss in a store that isn't the one winning the accolades, let alone being in a different country. Their signature stacks of bags of potatoes and other inventory were on palettes lifted off the floor, of course including their free roasted peanuts. There was a reasonable crowd here, being just after lunch, and a few people ahead of us, though the line moved quickly. Their menu is quite compact with the most basic burger options, typical sides and some other items for the more discerning diner, like hot dogs. Burger toppings are efficiently displayed in Five Guys style, with what comes in the works/everything displayed in one font colour. I went with the bacon cheeseburger, while my wife kept it healthy with the cheeseburger. Armed with the foreknowledge of how much extremely generous FG is with their servings of fries, we got a small to share. You're not dealing with sketchy warming trays like at McD's, so the wait was a few minutes, but well worth it. Also, we picked away at the tasty, salty peanuts while we waited. Not being sure what to do with our shells, we did the proper Canadian thing and cleaned them up ourselves. Hearing our number enthusiastically called out, I snagged our food and I grabbed some extra napkins for the telltale grease stains beginning to appear on the bag. Five Guys' burgers with the works are always a hot mess, and this was a well executed hot mess. Their burgers default to doubles, and the patties had a nice bit of char from the flat top, but were still juicy and had a good beef flavour. Combined with melted processed cheese, sautéed onions and mushrooms, mustard and pickles, it was just a great burger package. I need to start leaving off the lettuce and tomato on FG burgers as they don't add much except maybe a little crunch, but generally just make the burger messier and harder to manage. The small fries was as advertised, a pretty small cup full of golden brown, hand-cut fries, but as is the thing at Five Guys, there was an equal amount that was just sitting in the bag. They were crispy and had a decent potato flavour, and while they may not have been award-winning, they were better than most fast food fries out there. We had gotten a cup of gravy as we were told it was "actually pretty good" but really I should have known better as there's nothing being cooked at Five Guys that would serve as a base for an in-house gravy. So what we received was about what you would expect, a salty "gravy" made from beef bouillon powder and gravy colorant, although I still dipped fries in it like the salt-addicted fool that I am. Staff was friendly and the crew in the open kitchen was boisterous and seemed to actually like their jobs. All told, you want to be going to Five Guys for your quick burger fix instead of McDs, BK or Harvey's, just don't bother with the gravy like schmucks like me. read more

Lovin' this place in the Trainyards. White and red them throughout from the subway tiles on the wall, to counters to the paper towel dispensers (red!), the decor simple and fun. Obviously it's a U.S. chain, given all the articles hung on the wall for you to read while in line. (Don't forget to grab some peanuts!) Music seems to be in the classic rock range, and is played fairly (but not too) loudly - add just the right amount of fun background noise. Menu is simple - variations on a theme, and the theme is burgers. All toppings are included. Consider splitting an order of fries with a friend. (They are huge!). Fries are good (not quite great, but very good) and come with a cajun spice option. Late at night (just before closing) you may not be able to get bacon on your burger. Overall staff is great - friendly and fun. (One cashier apparantly didn't get the memo on how to treat customers - but what can ya do... Probably the best burger in Ottawa. Located in the Train Yards area, this place may not catch your eye at the beginning, since it looks a bit greasy and not really well taken care of, but it's all part of the show. Bags of potatoes (real bag of potatoes) will lead you from the door to the ordering counter, where the always smiling staff will take your order. It's not a brain breaker, you have four options. Burger, cheeseburger, and bacon cheeseburger (once I read bacon cheeseburger I stop reading so forgive me if I don't remember the fourth choice). After, you literally pick whatever you want in your burger. I chose mayo, lettuce and jalapeno peppers. There is a chalkboard that informs the customer where the potatoes that they are using come from. It is REAL meat. Like, I mean, for REAL. Meat. Beef. I'm serious. You can taste it. You can feel it. With all due respect, it is not McDonalds. You can see in the wall several reviews of Five Guys restaurants all over the place and I can tell you, they do not lie. It's a piece of heaven between two buns. Customize your burger, make experiments, try new ingredients and build up your own Five Guys menu. After dropping my gal at the train station, I came by to eat at this casual restaurant specializing in burgers, fries, and hot dogs. Everything is over sized. When you order a burger it means to burger patties and their small fries ( which you can top with salt, ketchup, vinegar or malt vinegar) looks like a medium at McDonald's. I can see why the big M is following restaurants like Five Guys. I ordered a cheeseburger customer with carmalized onions, lettus, tomatoes, ketchup and it was delish. The old fashion fries with skin peels are great! While waiting for your order you can grab a bunch of peanuts to hold your hunger down. A fun factoid: the parents who started this franchise named their restaurant after their five children who are boys. $$ read more

Ok so, this place has been raves about for years here in Ottawa! I decided to finally try and and see what all the fuss is about. OMG, I am sorry if this offends anyone (actually i'm not sorry because YELP reviews are supposed to be honest), but this place was NOT worth the money they charge. The menu is pretty straight forward (burgers, fries, poutines, drinks etc...) However, you would think, with the menu being so small that they would actually concentrate on offering amazing tasting food! For ducks sake! lol ... the meat in the burgers was BLAND!!!!!! When I mean bland, I mean zero seasoning. Just basically cooked ground beef. So gross!!!!!!! The poutine was meh - ok - I guess, but it's nothing compared to s good French Canadian Poutine! Overall, we paid WAY too much money for gross bland burgers and MEH poutines! I rather go to Harvey's and pay $10 less for much better tasting burgers. Been to this location twice, staff has been super friendly both times and food was yummy! They did forget a topping on my burger the last visit but they gave it to me to put on. They apologised a lot and it was all good. Mistakes happen! They really should have someone out cleaning more often as it gets super dirty in the sitting area quickly. read more

Five Guys used to be good about, well, five years ago when there weren't so many alternatives to McDonald's and the rest. Now it's always a sad experience: 1. The cheese on the cheeseburger is never melted. How can they manage to do this even, when there are two patties on the regular burger? 2. There is no care taken with making it look appetizing after you unwrap it from the foil paper. Mine today had a quarter slice of unmelted cheese hanging off the side, and because they always overdo it on the only three ingredients I have, there was a slurry mess of ketchup, mustard, and relish all over the place. All good burgers are a bit messy to eat at some point, but they shouldn't start off that way. 3. What's the point of having different size beverage glasses when the drinks are refillable anyway? 4. Will they please get rid of the hyper-salted peanuts already? I get it, it was a gimmick to distinguish you at first, but they taste more like salt than nut, and they basically send the message: it's going to take a long time to make your mediocre burger, so here are some free nuts. The best burger in town by far is at BFF on Bank St. And in spite of what that kid says in his note in the photo, sometimes McDonald's is just what you want -- and better than the monstrosity that Five Guys creates. read more

The burgers are o.k. I've been eating at this chain for years. The patties are thin, but you can always double them up if you want something thicker. It still wouldn't taste like a traditional thick juicy burger, but this is a fast food joint after all. The toppings are fresh and good. I wish they would keep the buns warm or at room temperature, the buns we got were on the colder side... With my cold bun and cold toppings, I felt like I was eating a sandwich and not a burger. The fries are normally good and you gets lots, but this time the fries were pretty much dark brown/black as if they we're cooked twice or forgotten about in the fryer. They we're awful and they shouldn't of been served. Quality control is obviously lacking at this location. read more

I tried this place today, I kept hearing about it online so I decided I had to try one while I was getting groceries at a certain evil department store beside it. It was really packed inside, which is always a good sign, pretty small too so eating there would probably be a pain. Also just a heads up, there are peanuts on the tables and they fry everything in peanut oil, definitely not peanut allergy friendly! There were several bags of potatoes along the wall and there was a sign advertising the type of potatoes they were using today. Cool! Fresh cut fries are always great. The girl at the counter was really polite and I noticed something bizzare... The people behind the counter looked happy? They appeared to be having fun, a welcomed change from other fast food restaurants where the staff look ready to crawl in a hole and die.Ok back to the burger...They have an option to get the works, which includes your typical burger toppings plus fried onions and mushrooms, plus a whole bunch of other toppings! Which is awesome but it also means this place isn't cheap! I got a bacon cheeseburger and fries for $12, that's about double the cost of a McDonalds/Wendys combo and I didn't even get a drink. After about a 15 minute break I got my burger. I brought it home with me and I kind of regret not eating it there because the burger was a bit soggy, but I munched on some fries when they were still fresh. The fries in my humble opinion, aren't really anything special. The portion size is excessive. I only ordered a regular but there was enough fries to be considered two larges at McDonalds, I'm sure. The burger however, despite the bun being slightly soggy, was unreal. Soooo good! How many burger places fry their onions nowadays? It just makes the burger so much better. This place is FANTASTIC. Prices are excellent, food is always delicious, and orders are always correct. Don't expect it to be *fast* food, because the lines are always long. That being said, their operation is efficient, and they handle them very well. Beware that the regular burgers are HUGE! Two patties, and way too tall to fit in your mouth. The little burgers are plenty if you're also getting fries. Now let me get to the fries. My boyfriend and I share a large because after they put the fries in the bag, they put another container full in the bag! So. Many. Fries. So. Delicious. Highly recommend! read more

I'm glad that Five Guys expanded their way into Canada. I don't understand the hype for their burgers (they're just regular burgers + toppings) BUT! I am a sucker for their cajun fries. I love that they give a regular cup of fries AND add an additional scoop of fries into the bag. Though the price for Five Guys is more expensive than your typical fast food chain, the servings are much larger and the ingredients are fresher; even my inner glutton finds it difficult to finish a small burger and small fries. This location is a decent size; it's never too crowded for eating in. The staff is friendly and efficient. Parking can be a little tight though. As always, you can help yourself to free peanuts on the counter, so those with nut allergies probably wanna stay away. read more

My friends and I attended this Five Guys location while visiting the Ottawa area for the day. It was my first ever visit to a Five Guys Burger and Fries so I unfortunately have no basis for comparison in that regard. However that being said I was not disappointed. The theme of the restaurant was pretty neat. I really like the red and white and the shell peanuts were cool too. It was quite busy when we went at around 5:00 pm on a Wednesday but we were able to find a table and the whole place was rather clean given the crowd. The young gentleman who took my order was very patient and polite as I ordered. I found the menu did lacked variety though. Basically only hamburgers, hot dogs and fries. Not a big deal for me since I was craving a hamburger but one of my friends was looking for a chicken burger (which they did not have). You also order everything a la carte. No prebuilt combos here! I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a little (yes little... not small) Cajun fry and a large soda. The total of my order came to over $15! Outrageously high, right? Well.... as one of my friends said "You get what you pay for.". First of all, the burger is a double patty, double cheese delight topped the way you choose. I went with grilled mushrooms and onions and A1 sauce. The quality of the ingredients was higher than most all other fast food joints I've frequented. Everything seemed really fresh, not always the case at fast food places I've been to. The fries were above average. They are served in a small cup but there were as many fries loose in the bag as in the cup (if not more) so I had plenty. And the Cajun spice was nice too but the fries were definitely not the highlight of the meal, it was all about the burger. So overall I would definitely recommend this place. The price was high and miles from my home keep it from a 5 star rating but if you're craving a great hamburger and in the area (or even 100 km away like I am), Five Guys is tough to beat! read more

After hearing the hype about this place for a while, I went with my father last week for a quick lunch. The menu is concise and to the point which makes ordering quite convenient. I got the cheeseburger with a fair share of toppings and my father and I split a large fries. The Pros: -The burger patties are incredibly tender and delicious - The veggie toppings are quite fresh - The staff are quick and friendly The Cons: - When placing two burgers in the same order, they don't label which burger is which. Having to dig through both burgers with your hands is not all too much fun. - The fries were over salted. I don't mind salt on my fries, but this was overkill. - The bun was too soggy, incredibly cheap - The price! You are paying too much for that quality of food. Although i will not be going out of my way anytime soon to eat here again, I've had worse burgers before. Save your money and go out to the works next time! read more

After hearing it was voted best burgers in Ottawa we thought we'd try it out. All I can say is they've got my vote! The food is absolutely amazing! Cooked to order 100% fresh beef and the toppings go from your traditional ketchup, mustard and relish to more upscale grilled onions and mushrooms. The customer service was out of this world. Friendly, efficient team (and I used that word on purpose) of amazing people Portion sizes are enormous! You will not leave hungry. I had the small burger and couldn't finish it. And you had better bring your appetite if you order the large fries. They could easily feed 2 adults and 2 kids. Great value for the money! We would absolutely go back! read more

I've been to Five Guys a few times now and each time time I come away disappointed. Maybe I've finally learned my lesson. The crux of the issue is the price. It just costs too much for what you get. Food: The burgers are good and they come with lots of toppings. But they aren't amazing. They are just good burgers. The smallest burger with no bacon or cheese is $5. Cheese or bacon are an extra dollar each. It's just a BIT too much to be reasonable. The fries are ok. They are big soggy and over salted for my taste, but the ones that are adequately crispy are very good. However, they FILL the bag with fries, covering your burger, which is annoying (messy) and a seriously HUGE waste of food. Few people could eat all those fries, and even fewer should. Maybe they could charge a little less if they didn't serve people 2-3x as many fries as they actually want (or need). The drinks are fountain sodas and disappointingly small for what you pay. Over $2.20 for the smallest drink they have, AND you have to serve it yourself. The peanuts are mega salty. I don't know how they get the salt UNDER the shell, but they do it very well, and I found them too salty to be pleasant. Ambiance: It's a neat place, with bags of potatoes and a cafeteria feel. I could dig it if the prices were lower. The wait it always long, a bit too long to be called "fast food," frankly. The seating is inadequate, and I'd like to say that's not their fault, but at $14 for a plain burger and fries, if I want to sit I should darn well be able to sit. Price: If the food was better and/or the price was lower, I would give this joint a much higher rating. But when your total comes to $14 for a plain burger and the smallest size of fries and soda they have, you start to question "what could I have gotten for this $14 elsewhere?" The answer: ten bacon cheeseburgers at McDonalds. I know, I know, the quality is better at Five Guys. But not THAT much better. read more

Had to go in after hearing all the hype! It was well worth it. The burger toppings were awesome and the burger itself was super good. It was messy but delicious! Had the bacon cheeseburger topped with mushrooms and green peppers! We had the seasoned fries and they were awesome! Price point is a little high at about $14/pp for a burger, fries and drink. You can sit in the place but the only reason I didn't give it one more star is that it was too packed to sit. The location is really small and at the above price point you would want to maybe sit in the place and eat. Good service though and will definitely be back. read more

After hearing the hype I decided to try it out. Colossal disappointment. The bacon is "micro bacon" rather than real thick bacon you would use at home. The patty was thin and not juicy at all with zero beef flavour. The fries are thick but are soft and mushy. Jalapeno peppers were not spicy. Your average pub burger is miles ahead of this and as far as burger joints go these doesn't get anywhere close to Hintonburger. You should either save some time and money, and go to Wendy's, or spend $10 (Still cheaper than Five Guys) at Hintonburger to get a phenomenal burger, fries, and drink. There's fast, inexpensive, and delicious, and this place offers none of those. read more

Amazing fries! The burgers are pretty good, but I've had better. The choice of toppings makes up for it.

The burger will run you up to $9 then with a $2 drink, and fries, it'll come up to about $14 for a full meal. This isn't exactly fast food because it takes awhile for the order to be made, but it's not a restaurant either. And it's closer to restaurant pricing, which is at least $3-5 more than it should be priced. The burger is also nothing special, isn't too filling, nor is it a gourmet burger. Been there a few times.. Nice burger and atmosphere. It's a fast food place so the motif is casual. Don't go there if you have a peanut allergy.. Peanut bags everywhere for you to snack on .. All in all a little overpriced but you are getting real beef.. Went there with a few friends and my friend complained that his bun was soggy buy mine was fine.. I think it depends how many toppings you put on because the foil will hold in the steam and the liquid from the condiments will absorb into the bun,. I think they could use a thicker bread to correct this problem if possible.. overall recommended.. read more

Good food. Friendly staff. But they are so busy enjoying the music and each other's company that they lose track of basic customer service. The music was so loud that they screwed up my order.... asked for tomato and the person taking my order thought I said "mayo". C'mon! I like music, and I don't mind waiting 10 minutes for them to prepare a great custom burger. But I don't want to wait ten minutes in a place where I can't hear myself think only to get the wrong burger when it was so easily preventable. Focus please! read more
