Fat Bastard Burrito - Burritos! Regular size. $10.95 each at the store, but was $13.70 BOGO on UberEats.

Fat Bastard Burrito has arrived in Orleans! They are a chain from Toronto. Their name cracks me up,…read morelol. I've had their bowls and tacos before at another location, but strangely enough I never had their burritos until recently, at this new location, and they were great. I was at my parents' house in Orleans and they're always up for trying new restaurants, so I'm often on UberEats looking for new eats for them. I saw that Fat Bastard Burrito was having a BOGO deal on their Nashville Chicken Burritos, so thought this would be a great little treat for them. So the Nashville Chicken burritos (regular size, which they call "lil" but is not really little at all, lol) on UberEats are $13.70 each, while if you buy them directly from the store they are only $10.95. However, with the BOGO deal it was $13.70 for 2 burritos, which was awesome. You get to pick the toppings and I pretty much loaded them up with lettuce, black beans, Pinto beans, cheese, rice, noodles (yep, noodles is an option and I chose it, lol), coleslaw, guacamole (no extra charge for guac which it often is at other restaurants), Pico de Gallo, sweet peppers, and "crunchies" (which are basically crushed tortilla chips). Pick up was quick and staff were friendly. I know I said I got the burritos for my parents, but let's be honest, kids always steal a taste of their parents' food, right? Or maybe that's just in my family (?) Lol. So yeah, I had some, and it was really good for a fast food joint. I mean, it's a fusion creation, Nashville Chicken Burrito, and for what it is, it was excellent. The vegetables were fresh, the chicken was lean and tender with a slight spicy kick, the tortilla was soft with the right amount of chew and it was tightly wrapped. The burrito did not fall apart despite being stuffed with ingredients. There are no shortages of Chipotle-style chain fast food joints in the NCR (e.g. Bar Burrito, Mucho Burrito, Quesada, etc.) but I do like Fat Bastard Burrito the most. They have the most amount of toppings available and their burritos are fat, and we all know size matters, lol. This location is in the Fallingbrook Shopping Centre (which is actually more of a plaza). It's in the same section as Eggspress/Parea and easyfinancial. Lots of free parking.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen - Bulbasaur in a pile of chicken pieces :)

Considering it was a Sunday, I found that to be quite impressive and a testament to the restaurant. The food was piping hot. So hot I couldn't even bite into it for fear of burning my mouth! I took the time to enjoy the fries which were quite enjoyable - crunchy and tasty. Also, in comparison to other restaurants... the chicken pieces were HUGE! You're very much getting your money's worth in that regards. When it had finally cooled down enough to eat... it was good. It didn't live up to the hype I was given before going in, but it was definitely enjoyable. The fried covering was crunchy and very tasty without it being overly oily. The coleslaw was different than what I've tasted before but after an intriguing first few bites found myself happily digging in. The biscuits were perfect: harder shell with a wonderful hot and soft interior :) I look forward to another visit to compare against this first visit.

recently in the news it was revealed that many franchise owners were suing the Popeyes franchise…read morefor changing the method of butchering the chickens. They claim the chickens are no longer Halal method because the major arteries are no longer cut and the blood drained, which is required for being certified Halal. They claim most of their customers are Islams and they are losing them causing financial harm. The last time I was there the claim seemed to be true as I noticed the blood vessels in the dark meet were indeed full of blood and the taste had changed, not in a good way. I'm not saying it's not safe to eat as it is well cooked but I did notice the centre of the leg was all red and the taste was different from the outside. My solution: I bought an air fryer and some hot sauce. It's a shame as I loved their chicken before they changed. Mr. Wontbe Back

Mary Brown's - Chicken and wedges

I'm a fan of Mary Brown's Chicken, so was excited to see this new location open up in Orleans,…read morewhere my parents and my brother's family live. We ordered food from there for lunch one day. No one in my family (other than my husband and I) had had Mary Brown's Chicken before so we got a variety of items to try. We got some mild fried chicken, some spicy fried chicken, potato wedges, onion rings, gravy, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese salad. We also got a box of 5 chicken tenders with fries for my little nieces to share, but I wasn't able to get a picture because they were hungry, lol ;) It was my first time having the spicy fried chicken and it looked to me like they just sprinkle spices on top of the regular fried chicken after frying. It was ok, but the spices were definitely not well distributed. It's also not all that spicy. The chicken at Mary Brown's is similar in style to Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), as opposed to Popeye's Chicken. It's less salty than KFC I find. The potato wedge were a bit bland, but tasted great with the gravy poured on top, lol. They are lightly battered. The onion rings were crispy and great. I had some leftover fries from my nieces. The fries aren't battered like the wedges. They were good as well. They are just regular-cut fries, not shoestring, but not beefsteak/thick cut. The macaroni and cheese salad was too rich and creamy for my tastes, but I guess that's how it's supposed to be. I didn't try the coleslaw because I generally don't like coleslaw and especially not creamy coleslaw. The gravy was nice and thick and full of chicken flavour. My dad's assessment was "better than KFC, but not as good as Popeye's" lol. I don't know if I agree. I really like Mary Brown's and I like that it's a Canadian chain (it's from out East). Besides, I think all fried chicken places can coexist, since they all offer something a bit different :) This Mary Brown's Chicken is in the Orleans Gardens Shopping Centre (which is really a plaza, not an enclosed shopping centre). There's lots of free parking in the plaza.

The reason for this is that I find their fries unremarkable (and if I'm going to waste calories and risk my cardiovascular health, I want it to be delicious, lol) and I find their burgers too salty. However, they recently came out with plant-based nuggets (aka vegetarian "chicken" nuggets) and they are available for a limited time only, so I wanted to give them a try. These plant-based nuggets are made of pea protein and fava beans. They are soy-free. They do contain wheat. I ordered the 6 pieces for $5.99. This price is just for the nuggets not a combo. I went with my mom, so she got the 3 pieces (real) chicken strips combo, which I had a digital coupon for for $6.99. She got fries and a root beer with the combo. I enjoyed the plant-based nuggets. The texture is a little similar to dark meat. I'd say it's definitely more "imitation meat" than "veggie bites." My mom liked her combo, and commented that she likes the chicken strips at A&W better than the chicken nuggets at McDonald's. This location is a free-standing store and not in a food court. It also has a drive thru, which had a massive line up on a Friday evening. The store was also packed. We had to wait a long time for our orders. However, the staff were nice enough and our order was correct. The garbage area was a bit messy though. I do like that if you're eating in, they serve your drink in a glass mug. Free parking in their private lot or in the strip mall complex that A&W is a part of.
