After striking out at Cartlandia, we came here for lunch. They are in the corner, closest to 82nd, of the Fred Meyer building. There are no buns, but you can have your burger as a bowl or lettuce wrap. They knew to change gloves to assemble my food, which makes me more comfortable. They only cook fries in the frier. I love being able to have fries. If you have a peanut allergy, the oil is peanut. They also have peanuts on the counter, free to snack on while you wait for your food. They were a bit salty for me, but I don't like as much salt as most people. There is plenty of seating, with a mix of bar height tables and regular height tables. Ketchup is readily available on the counter. Toppings on your burger are all no extra charge. I will say though, the mushrooms are clearly canned (a definitive tin note and rubbery texture). I will avoid those in the future. The fries are delicious and they leave the skin on. We split a small, and had the smaller burgers. For most Americans (more sedentary than not), this was plenty of food. If you're a growing teen, or very active...hiking ten miles in the gorge or climbing the Multnomah falls trail circle in under two hours...you will likely want a bigger burger. (see below) Nothing against the All-American Hamburger; but because I'm trying to eat healthier as I approach my dotage, I've backed away from this delightful hot sandwich. When friends at The Bookkeeping Company touted 5 Guys Burgers and Fries, I thought perhaps it was only because they had some kind of business relationship and wanted them to succeed. But "good golly, Ms. Holly!" You were right! 5 Guys consistently makes really good burgers. The white tile interior décor lacks a bit in atmosphere, for me, it evokes golden memories of being take to my father's peccadillo palace of fast-food - decades ago and miles away - a White Castle restaurant in Detroit. Tiny burgers, cooked in grilled onions became part of my way of being. The ambiance is about all that 5 Guys has in common with the White Castle - originator of the "slider". Even 5 Guys "small" hamburger is heaped with more delicious ground round than several sliders. In a moment of weakness, I tried the McDonald "Grilled Onion & Cheese Burger" when they came out. I received pitiful offering of a limp bun, two or three strings of grilled onions, and pale cheese hiding a sad little patty. In all fairness, it only costs $1 buck. This week, I got a major "burger jones" for a an onion burger. Before shopping at Freddies, I found myself slipping down to 5 Guys. I walked in the door past the peanuts-in-the shell by the door; around the maze of potato sacks and up to the counter. Wanting to check our their willing to please, I ordered my regular burger with "three-times grilled onions" - and added that I was willing to pay extra for them to load 'em on. "No problem!" was the cheerful response. "All toppings are included. We want you to be delighted!" Soon, I was unwrapping a steaming two-handfuls of goodness. The only thing it needed was just a touch of salt, which I easily added. This matches my past experiences at 5 Guys. When dining with friends, I'll go for a "regular" order of French fries - it's plenty enough to satisfy two hungry fellas. The "large" fries must be gargantuan. For me, and all I've introduced to 5 Guys Burgers & Fries - it's two gooey thumbs up! HAMBURGER SIDEBAR ... * I lived in Los Angeles for ten years before coming back to Portland. Friends dragged me to "In-N-Out Burger" upon occasion. I never did understand their fanatical appreciation for this pedestrian hamburger chain. For a premium burger, nothing at the time could beat a "FATBURGER". But, for the best "budget gut-bomb-on-a-bun" I've found no replacement for "Original Tommy's Hamburgers. Those "in the know" just ordered "a hamburger". What you got was a burger patty that filled the smaller sized fresh bun, double-thick slice of real cheese, fresh chopped onions, their famous all-meat (no beans) Famous Chili, mustard, pickles and a thick slice of Beef Steak tomato. Dry, cold ,stale! Burger was cold, and overcooked. Unmelted American cheese. Very stale bun,cold. Thought we were in for a treat, have not been to a five guys for at least 5 years. Remember them being super hot, juicy etc. This was very much so a disappointment. Milk shake tasted like fake ice cream and artificial strawberries. This place serves the best burgers and home cut fries around. The burger is soooo juicy and full of flavor, you can order it with a lot of veges, or just say EVERYTHING and they will put it all on, very, very delicious. The fries come in two flavors plain or cajun both are delicious, but my husband and I both like the plain fries the best, they slice these fries down and fry them right in front you they are extremely fresh and taste awesome. SOOOO GOOD!!! I don't even know where to start! I have been depressed about not living close to an In-N-Out burger, ever since I discovered this place I no longer suffer from depression! These burgers are quality! I usually get the small burger (which isn't all that small) I add bacon, mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The Fries are so yummy! Fresh burgers here a la In N Out. I had the single patty bacon cheese burger with pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard and ketchup. It was amazing! The whole burger was fresh and served hot. I also got a chocolate milk shake and a side of Cajun fries. I was in burger heaven. The burger melts in your mouth and the combination of topping to meat to bun is perfect. Five guys knows how to do a burger good. They have peanuts to eat while you wait for your order if you're hungry. Some people throw the shells on the floor, but we decided not to do that. The neighborhood is a bit dicey outside and the location is far from NE pdx. I say its worth it for the burgers. read more

Yaaaaaayyyyyyy! Five Guys! I'm so glad I learned about this place. It's really great value, super fresh, custom made-to-order everything. The menu is super basic, but you can add whichever toppings you like at no extra charge (including bbq sauce, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, and all the other regulars). Food comes fast. A flashback to how burger diners used to be. Great burgers with a TON of condiments/filling options. Their milkshakes are perfectly thick and delicious. Slightly frustrating that they don't have your fries ready right away when you order online or over the phone but they do that so they keep their fries' integrity when you get there. I generally avoid chain fast food restaurants, I certainly had my fill of greasy burgers in my teens and twenties. Out on a long bike ride, and finding most of the carts at cartlandia closed, I thought I'd give it a try, as they seemed regarded higher than say, McDonalds or Wendys. After all if there's anytime I deserve a high calorie gut bomb, it's when I'm 10 miles from home on my bike. Don't expect fast food prices though, a burger, fries and a drink will run you in the neighborhood of 10 bucks, but they are made to order, with your choice of toppings. It can be a bit confusing to order, but they will help you. Although I wish I had skipped the bbq sauce, and remembered to ask for mayo, the burger itself did not dissapoint. It is more like pub grub than fast food. The fries were a bit undercooked, but still yummy, and soak-through-the-bag greasy. The "little cheeseburger" is enough for all but the most gluttonous appitite. There are options for vegetarians, but if you're watching your calories, you may want to go somewhere else. read more

I have not been in for a while, love the fries when they're hot but the burgers always disappoint. They overcook the meat, to the point where there is no juiciness. You have no right to order yours cooked as you prefer, it's cooked dead or nothing. The burger has no meat flavor, may as well have a veggie sandwich. Beyond that take it or leave it thing the service has been decent, not too long a wait. I can spend about the same at Red Robin & they give me what I want, crispier never ending fries. read more

Food definitely lives up to the hype. The fries surpassed the hype! I see myself going in just for the fries alone. My only critique would be that there weren't any cheese options (that I recall), considering there are a million wonderful topping you can customize your order with. I have some friends from Philly that were stoked! when Five Guys came to town so my expectations were high. Maybe if i'd a been high I would have liked the food more. I will start with the good. The small cajun fries are HUGE, enough for 3 people. If I was in prison I might have thought the burger was gourmet. But I am not(hence the yelping). The burger was greasy and bland and a bit spendy. I really love the fries and the burgers but I have to say that I dont like how many calories it all has. Theres only two sizes of fries....no smalls, and its all so expensive. I really think they should offer combos because that would help price wise. But its really yummy. Also, my husband is allergic to musrooms and in MINE I found three....now if it were him eating it, he would have had some SERIOUS issues. They need to be more careful. This is a pretty good burger place. I feel it's fast food like but really good fast food. The fries are huge so one order is usually plenty for two people. The burgers taste great and you can see them make it all. Haven't tried the hot dogs yet but I want to. It really is worth the money to go instead of an actual fast food establishment. This was by far the best restaurant that I have been to in a long time! The burger was excellent and the customer service was outstanding as well! The staff seemed a little small and I did have to wait a little long which I didn't mind at all and the manager was well cognizant of it and provided me a free meal on my next visit without me even saying anything. Food good but priced high. Worst part about this place is the smokers outside the front door. Staff don't care and the teller looked at me stupid when i noted the cloud we had to walk through. This place is FIRE POWER! Not just this location but all are ran well, clean and full of friendly employees. Closest you will come to a burger that taste as good as one you cook at home.
