I love Five Guys's fries especially when they extra fry it in the oil. I know it's not the healthiest, but it's so satisfying when it's made like that. They also give so much fries for a size small. The service here was slow and kind of dismissive even though it was almost empty. They had a cone on the floor since the ceiling was leaking and the tables were dirty. No restroom available inside, you have to ask for a key and walk outside. My burger was soggy and im not sure if its from the lettuce or what but it was very soggy and I ate it there. Following my first (and what had previously been my only) trip to Five Guys years ago, I'd long wondered if I should go back and give them a second chance. My experience was disappointing, but considering how so many people seem to like them, I've always figured I should go back just to see if my opinion would be any different after all of this time. And I have to say - it has. Though it's still not as glowing as how others seem to feel, it's safe to say my most recent meal was far more successful! If you've never been, Five Guys is like a cross between Shake Shack and In N Out. Like the former, the burgers here are a step above your traditional fast food joint, but the style of their food is more classic, like the latter. The menu is also a little more varied, as they offer burgers in both regular and "little" sizes, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries, and milkshakes. Remembering my friend's advice in the past that Five Guys' "little" portions are actually regular sized at most other places, I opted to get the LITTLE BACON CHEESEBURGER ($9.29) and LITTLE FRIES ($4.39), so as not to entirely destroy my waistline. Compared to my first meal at Five Guys (in Sunnyvale, if that matters), my burger here was far more enjoyable. Whereas my first one was incredibly greasy (even on the outside of the foil...), this one wasn't nearly as bad. The patty was fairly juicy, the veggies were crisp and refreshing, the bacon was actually decently crispy, and the buns didn't get soggy just a few bites in again. That being said, the fries were just awful. The portion was generous, but how much of a plus is that when they are so mealy and limp? Sure, it's not easy to get fresh fries super crispy, especially when they are cut slightly thicker like these, but I ended up tossing about half of the order (though, to be fair, I wasn't planning on finishing it regardless). Beyond the food, possibly the biggest thing Five Guys has going for them is their late night hours. Given how most places around here close relatively early, the fact that they're open until 10pm is almost a godsend, as there aren't a ton of options in Burlingame or nearby Millbrae. Otherwise, despite how much more successful this meal went, I don't know if I have a compelling reason to come back. I haven't been to Five Guys since the mid 2000s when I lived in DC for a minute. Back then, burgers were cheap and filling on my student budget. I also loved how you could add on so many free toppings (mushrooms were a welcome surprise!). I finished a workout class in the area and was craving some fries. I figured I deserved it since I basically worked off all the calories in advance. There were a few people inside eating, but otherwise it was pretty empty. The cool thing about it they don't charge toppings and you get to customize which ones you want on your burger and believe on the hot dogs as well. The selection is huge and you can pick as many as you'd like, but some of the standouts for me include the grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, jalapeños, hot sauce, and A1 sauce. OVERALL: One of the better fast food burgers around. They are consistent with their burgers and reasonably priced. The chain has won many awards that are featured on the restaurants walls. Right now that are doing take-out (not 100% sure on delivery). All staff wear masks and gloves. FOOD: I always order a little cheeseburger with most toppings and fries. Their little burgers have 1 patty vs their regular burgers that have 2. I appreciate that all toppings are free, including grilled onion and mushrooms. With all of the toppings, it makes the little burgers a filling meal. You can also add bacon for extra and get condiments on the side. Their fries are really just okay. Sometimes they are really limp and other time they are really dry. They are natural fries, in that they still have bits of potato skin on them. I also appreciate that they offer free peanuts in the shell. Those are fun and nostalgic. They do fry their foods using peanut oil, so keep in mind if you're allergic. SPACE: They're located in downtown Burlingame so parking can be a bit challenging. You can either find street parking or there is a lot in the back. More can be done to keep this place clean. There are often messy tables and peanut shells left on the floor. SERVICE: For a fast food chain this location is s l o w. Do not expect to be in and out if you're getting to-go. My teenage son got food poisoning four hours after consuming a BLT from this location this afternoon. It is the only thing that he had to eat today. My boys love the fries and burgers here and they have been frequent customers. I called in to let them know and to ask of anyone else had contracted food poisoning. The kid who answered was quite rude and dismissive. He said that he didn't know and had just started his shift. I was not accusing him, just informing and inquiring. Unwrapping burger and the lettuce is wilted beyond recognition so I remove it. Bright green raw jalapeños could have been sliced a bit thinner cuz they still had their ribs and seeds in place - hot! I like to cut it in half as it's always messy to pick the whole thing up to eat. Seeded bun and burger was super cheesy and still hot - kinda on the small side for a $9 burger. Too many fries to finish and for $4 you can buy over 15 lbs of russets at Trader Joe's sans the deep fryer. Young crew working the counter and grill so don't expect white glove service. DH was in a burger mood so we can here on a Saturday night around 8. The place was not busy and our order only took about 5 minutes It took a few minutes to figure out how to get tap water and DH was munching on peanuts. He had the cheeseburger with everything and was happy. I had a burger wrapped in lettuce, no bun, with everything but mayo. I liked it, although it was very messy to hold and eat. Thank goodness it was wrapped in foil to capture the drips. We shared the fries, which were really fresh and good. The regular portion is huge. It's nice that they post the calorie counts right on the menu. The fries are my favorite menu item here. Crisp on the outside, soft inside and freshly cut.
