I had been avoiding Five Guys for years due to a bad review from a colleague of mine in spite of the initial glowing reviews I had heard. This was only seconded by a second colleague also informing me that not only was it over-rated, but the fries were horrible. The Gauntlet gave me the perfect excuse to finally thumb my nose at the nay sayers and give the Guys a chance. Unlike one of my favorite burger joints, Mighty Fine, I didn't feel like I was necessarily eating the top quality organic ingredients. The condiments weren't gross at all, I just didn't feel like I was eating one of the more healthy burgers - if such a thing is possible. And the fries I had heard such horrible reviews on? I enjoyed them as well. I even liked that they were thrown into a cup with a large about of bonus fries hanging out in my brown bag. The one issue I will point out with the fries is more around the condiments supplied by the establishment. The fries, which more like a homestyle or steak fry, were good solo or with ketchup. They however were not good with the malt vinegar. I'm a huge malt vinegar fan and have even had fries that way, but for me, the texture and flavor just wasn't right for that mixture. It's a pretty good cheeseburger, but Hopdoddy is just down the street and Mighty Fine, who does a very similar burger, is not far either. Those are relatively expensive but you'll still spend less. I'm just trying to come up with any reason to go here and spend that kind of money when there are locally owner places that are less expensive and better, or at least as good. Had given this place a 5 star rating before however, based on my experience today it has now gone to a 1 star. Have been going to this location and five guys for a long time. Will be my last time at this location until Maria doesn't work there anymore. I always call in for a pick up order and when I do the store manager ( i forgot his name) always has my stuff ready to go when I get there and is super nice and always has been. But today when I got there they had me labeled as "BOY" on my ticket. I paid for my food and was waiting in the same area I always wait which is near the counter where they call your name to pick up the order. (I always stand there once I pay for my food) So as I am standing there a lady that said her name was Maria told me "You need to move over there" and pointed somewhere in the store. I said I'm ok I'll stand here and wait on my food. She said "NO I said to stand over there and wait on your food." I told her I come in here all the time and stand here and wait on my food. She then said "SIR you need to stand over there by the tables away from our counter." I asked for the manager and she said "I AM the manager." I said are you the store manager and she said no he is not in today. The whole time she was pretty much yelling so everyone could hear her. I told her I wasn't moving. She continued to tell me to move. So I was in a hurry and figured she was going to slow walk my order. Since the food wasn't ready when I got there and I always call it in the same time every time and it has been ready every time except today. So I told her to just give me my money back. She laughed and came up to the counter laughing. I was rude back to her and then she said she wasn't going to give me my money back. I told her You will give me my money back or we are going to have a real issue! She kept laughing and talking trash to me. So when I left I gave her a piece of my mind and left. Only giving a star because it forces me to. I'd give none of it were possible. My husband had been there once, and said the food was good, but that it was super crowded during the weekday lunch rush. We were in the area on a Saturday (the 3rd of December) to get groceries nearby at Trader Joes, and realized we hadn't had lunch yet, and didn't want to shop on empty stomachs. This place looked relatively quiet when we cruised by, and the hubs said it was a good burger -- so we ducked in. Having never been there, I let my husband order first. A cheeseburger (all the trimmings), a regular fry, and a drink. When it was my turn, since I still didn't know anything about the place, my exact words were "I'll have the exact same as him". Not that hard, right? Shocker number one was that 2 burgers, 2 fries, and 2 drinks cost over $30. WHAT? If I'm paying that damn much for a simple burger, i want table service. I could go to Chile's or Applebees for a burger, and have somebody wait on me in a better environment for the same amount of money. Shocker number two was that we waited OVER 20 MINS for our number to be called out. See above regarding table service -- that's a restaurant level wait time. Not fast food, where I serve myself. Shocker number three was that saying "I'll have the exact same as him" IS APPARENTLY too complicated. I needed to hold the poor kid's hand and spell out step-by-step what I wanted -- because my husband's burger came out with all the trimmings, and mine was completely plain. Bread. Meat. Cheese. We waited 20 mins for THAT?! I went up to the front, and was completely pleasant at this point still, and set my burger down and explained that I had asked for it all-the-way with the toppings, could they please fix it. This crabby older lady looked like I was annoying her, and treated me like it was my fault for ordering it wrong, or something (again... don't know how much simpler I could've been). She told me she could give me all the toppings and I could make it myself, or she could have them make me a new burger, but she couldn't take the burger back behind the counter and add the toppings because of health code (which I totally get). If they were rapid at making the burgers, I would've gone that route. I did not want to add the toppings myself because the bread was already ripping in half from sticking to the cheese when i tried to open it to look for toppings. To put the toppings on the same burger would've been a disgusting mess. BUT ALAS, I also did not want to wait TWENTY more minutes for a new burger. So, to summarize: I waited forever to eat an extremely overpriced, falling apart, plain burger, that was not what I ordered... and enteracted with some teenager who couldn't take the simplest of requests, and an old lady who was crabby and rude. I could go to Mighty Fine for WAY BETTER service and atmosphere.... and a freaking drive-through Whopper from BK would taste better than what I ended up with. read more

Marketing research must have north Austin residents listed as "overweight", "Cheap", "love meat". With all the hoopla regarding 5 Guys I was all set to experience a great burger. The Five Guys burgers were inadequate-- skinny and small enough to be hidden inside the mediocre buns. I got mine with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and it was just okay. I mean, I finished it and all, but only b/c I was hungry. The fries are crap. They reminded me of the fries we used to get at boarding school-- big fat soggy fries that taste more like mashed potatoes in a non-crispy skin. Some people may like their fries like that, but I don't. Ambiance is okay. They have free peanuts inside, but since I'm allergic I sat outside. Who cares that it's kind of dingy, the tables aren't really clean, there may be crying children, the wait might be like 45 minutes for lunch i.e. not really "fast" food... I love their cheeseburgers! It's probably among my top guilty pleasures. I get it with everything but pickles. The patties are cooked perfectly (well done, they claim, but somehow still juicy). The fries are also delicious because I like fries that have a soft inside, and the thick cut of FG fries guarantees me that texture. With its $5+ price tag, I'd expect my sandwich to be a level above a drive-through burger, and on that count it succeeded, though it fairly slouched to that mark. I'd feel okay about ending things here and just let an average burger be an average burger, save for one thing: The signs lining the dining room proclaiming love from Zagat Guide, various magazines, newspapers and the like. Okay, Five Guys, if you really want to walk the walk of a four or five star burger place rather than just hanging up some posters that talk the talk, listen close to my advice: 1. That's good, fresh beef you have and you show the discipline and control not to overcook it... good, but... you could take a half second to season it more and get a hint of grill char on there without drying things out. Your main ingredient is on the right track, just save it from the doldrums of blandness. 2. Next is that bun of yours. Try toasting it (or toasting it more) with a little butter or margarine on the face. That would give the bun better structure to hold the sandwich together (less mush), better texture in the mouth and better flavor on the tongue. 3. You're proud of the extensive list of condiment options available on every burger for no extra charge. You have both grilled and raw onions - how about both sweet and dill pickles? Many of us believe dills are essential to a proper burger, and those sweet ones just don't do it for us. Just sayin'. 4. Find a way to offer a small side of fries along with a burger. I understand every batch is made to order and I can respect that. However when fries cost an additional $3, you may risk elevating your full-meal price point to a level where you're going to be judged by even higher expectations. All that aside, Five Guys, you're pretty A-OK just as you are. Just take down those silly posters and cast aside the pretense and pressure of being anything other than a totally average burger shop. Since I don't like INO, I won't compare Five Guys to them. Moving on to Five Guys... When someone talks about Five Guys, it always seem to start with "they're all about the toppings". STOP! Since when did a burger become about the toppings? Why aren't we talking about how good the meat is? Or even the cheese? Or the bun? Instead, we're talking about the toppings (insert your Allen Iverson's "practice, we're talking about practice?" tone). When did our burger society gotten so douche-y that we're talking about a burger joint based on their toppings? Isn't burger about meat, bun, and cheese? Fine, let's entertain the toppings a bit since this is their supposed strength. Yes, they have a lot of selections. But the problem is that all topings are luke warm, if not cold (and I'm not refering to food that's suppose to be cold). Luke warm grilled onions, almost cold mushrooms...it made the burgers even worse. So strip away the toppings and Five Guys is just...not very good. The meat was dry with zero taste. Bun was nothing special and cheese was just cheese. Chances are, if you put their meat next to a Big Mac, you won't be able to tell the difference. Then there's the fries. Again, nothing special. Actually, I think I like McD's chemically enhanced french fries better. Yes, the sizes were big. But for the price, it really should be. Maybe it was the hype and expectations coming in, but I walked away feeling a bit underwhelmed. So, Finally they opened one near me in the Arboretum area, was not disappointed. Limited menu, no Milk shakes. I love that you can request as many add ons at no extra cost. I had a double Cheese Burger with fresh slices of Jalapenos, Grilled Onions and Grilled Mushrooms. Great tasting beef, good bun, the American cheese slices were OK. I prefer thick cheddar cheese on my Cheese burger. Overall very good burger. The fries were fresh thick cut, with some skin, very nice. This was my first time at Five Guys. I came in the late afternoon so the lunch rush was over and I was the only person in the eating area. The staff was nice and greeted me at the door. I ordered the Little Cheeseburger, which is a single patty. You can choose from a good amount of toppings from the menu. But as I always do when I try a burger for the first time at a new joint I ordered a pretty simple burger just lettuce, tomato, and pickles, because you should be able to taste the beef patty and see how it's done. Lets be honest toppings are something every restaurant does and they all do it pretty well, from caramelized onions to grilled mushrooms they're the same across the board. The cashier told me it would be about 7 mins for my order to come up...fair enough. It takes me about that time to grill a burger when I do it myself. I also order a small fries with some cajun seasoning. I get my order and unwrap the foil from the burger and it looks very good. I take a bite and the patty is cooked to well-done and dry. Personally I like my beef patties on the Medium side slightly pink. Fries are somewhat decent but they decorate the place with "The BEST burger this.." and "The BEST Fries that..." Maybe I gotta go to these other cities to really try a Five Guys Burger. Overall NOT IMPRESSED...I work at a hotel and guest are always looking for a good quick burger for lunch, so I feel like I gotta try the burgers in the area. I might take away one for meager portions, however. So here are some warnings about portions at this place. They have two burger sizes: "Burger" and "Little Burger". It turns out the "Burger" is double meat and the "Little Burger" is single meat. That annoyed me a little as I felt mislead. Now for the fries. That also comes in two sizes small or large. The small is basically a 12 oz cup filled to the point that it is over flowing. Then while the guy drops the cup into the sack he piles another helping down the chute just for good measure. Bring a friend to help you with the "small" fries. The cup for the large fries was like a 24 oz cup. I'm glad I didn't see any poor souls order a large fries. Where else in Austin can I get a little burger with ALL the veggies? I order just about everything on the toppings menu and have them pile it onto this tiny little burger. It's the best concoction ever. My husband prefers the regular bacon cheeseburger. The bacon is always crispy and has good flavor. The cajun style fries are pretty good, too, but sometimes overpowering to my boring palate and I don't always like a thick, mushy fry (but my husband does). You know, Five Guys is growing on me! Every time I go, it gets better and better. They are really finding their groove. First of all, before I get to the food, I have to give kudos to the management and staff. I've been there maybe half a dozen times, a couple time 15 minutes before closing. Their people always greet me with a smile, never make me feel rushed, PILE ON extra fries and tell me my food will be ready in "7 minutes"! While I wait, I grab my drink and a bunch of peanuts and take in the music (btw, I appreciate your lowering the music 5 or 6 decibels, the first couple visits were way too loud and kept me away for quite a while). What can you say about the food? Fantastic! Quality is always consistent. Hot, tasty and more than plentiful. I especially love all the ingredient choices. Grilled onions and mushrooms! They'll even grill your jalepenos if you ask! The only downside is after I load up the burger, the bun always falls apart and eating it becomes quite an experience! The Arboretum/Great Hills area has become quite competitive for great burgers. I have to say, I love most of them, and hope all of them keep the bar raising the bar on each other! Stood there for 5 mins while "five guys" stood there and refused to acknowledge me. Finally, an older man (manager, I presumed) asked if I had been helped. TL;DR: Save your money go to Mighty Fine a few blocks away. It usually takes either an exceptionally good experience or extraordinarily bad one to get me motivated to come write a review. I can give restaurants some slack but when it comes to the horrible piece of shit that I just had at this place, I feel obligated to share my experience. Not only did the people behind the counter screw up my simple cheeseburger by adding stuff that wasn't on the ticket, they were condescending when I went to point it out. I refused a new burger because it's no trouble to take extra stuff out. The real issue was when I took the first bite into the burger. For 7$ the least I would expect is to have properly seasoned meat. The burger was so bland that if I didn't know any better I'd think I was eating a soy patty. I know that the burgers are usually served sloppy style but for some unexplained reason the bottom bun was soggy and cold, making it a pretty miserable experience. If it's any consolation, the fries were just as you'd expect them to be, no complaints there. But for someone who doesn't like peanuts, I am definitely driving down the road to Mighty Fine where I know that I've always received good tasting, consistent quality burgers. The comparison set to which I am referring is McDonald's, Wendy's, BK, Sonic, In N' Out, and others. Five Guys is probably as close to In N' Out burgers as you can get. Look, I don't love fast food burgers, but they do a decent job here. And, for $6, I don't know that you can do much better... deal wise. It's fun for kids, I suppose that they serve the fries in those cups and then they fall down into the brown bag. So, kids can eat fries out of this greasy brown paper bag. Personally, seeing the grease drip through the brown bag makes me not want to eat what I am about to consume... because if I'm being forced (and yes, this was a forcing... I don't do fast food by choice) to eat like that I'd like to pretend it's decent and not greasy gross. This fast food chain is all across the east coast, southeast, southwest, and in parts of the midwest. If you're out and really feel the need not to eat somewhere local and original or fast food is just your thing, then you might as well hit up Five Guys. It's been a couple years since I've been to Five Guys. I remember good memories in the past, but I found myself generally craving other burgers place over Five Guys. Today, I decided to see how things compared to my memory. The best thing about five guys is their many toppings you can choose from without being nickel and dimed. I almost always prefer my cheeseburgers with bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, pickles, caramelized onions, and mushrooms and so this is what I ordered here. I received my $8 burger rather quickly. To my immediate dismay, the pickles were in one stack on top of each other. That's okay from McDonalds, not from a place where you pay double. However pickles not being spread out is no huge deal, the bigger issue was a lack of seasoning. It needed a significant amount of salt and pepper to be correct, very disappointing. The bacon did not have enough saltiness to make up for the lack. The bacon itself however was crispy and well rendered, though I found their choice to pre cut them into 1" slices odd. The onions were fine, the mushrooms were a bit on the grey side and not hot...as if they'd been cooked a while ago and set into a bin to be used as toppings. These few faults alone had me set to give Five Guys a 3 star. But wait. One third of the way through my burger I realize what else was missing. The fucking cheese! No wonder things tasted further off that I expected! I brought my burger to the counter, and they were nice enough to not give me any crap and to remake my order with cheese. It's just not the same without cheese! I received my second burger. This time it was cooked by someone different, but still greatly lacked seasoning. I honestly can't remember the last time I had a burger at a fast food place, cafe, or restaurant that needed this much more salt. It's like they literally put none. After a few bites, two things were felt. The cheese was not good, as in it was low quality. It reminded me of Kraft singles, but somehow worse. There was this offputting high that I have not tasted in a very long time. It's not an issue of simply being American cheese, as P Terry's uses American cheese that's tasty. It was the first time I had ever liked a burger more without cheese than with! EVER. I really love cheese too, it is my favorite food, so this was a disappointment without compare. Oh but the fun doesn't stop here. My remade burger didn't have bacon! Unfortunately I was already full, didn't want to have the order remade again, and frankly was fed up. The burgers are fine, but the cajun fries are 5-stars all the way!!! Dine-in and enjoy peanuts while you wait. Take it to go and enjoy your burger with a pile of fries on top in the bag. Good stuff all the way around, other than the calorie count. The lack of drive through window means you have to exercise to get it. read more

Two stars because the fries were good, but everything else was less. Payed a visit to Five Guys today for the first time. My boyfriend had a lot of good things to say about it, and it's close to our house so I figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. He ordered and double patty burger with the works (their toppings are free), and I had just a regular burger with no cheese and some mushrooms. We decided to share a drink and had our own orders of fries. Price was $27.00 which I thought was an OK amount. While we were waiting we noticed that some of the people had been going to the counter to complain about their orders being wrong. We were getting a little worried and our food was taking a while to come out. When our food finally came out we unwrapped our burgers and it was almost as if they jumbled up our orders. My burger had toppings that my boyfriend burger should've had and vice versa. My boyfriends burger didn't have any bacon or a1 sauce that he asked for. I don't know if I'll visit another Five Guys, but if I do it won't be this location. Next time I'm craving a burger I'll make the drive and take my $27 to Dan's or Whataburger. read more

I've been to a 5 Guys before in Virginia so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they were opening one in the Arboretum. In comparison with other burger joints up north, I consider 5 Guys superior to Mighty Fine but not quite as good as Mooyahs. Burger: Good. Not great, but good. The patties are overcooked and they need some seasoning. They offer a good number of toppings to choose from and the veggies were fresh. Just a warning that the "regular" burger is two patties and the "junior" is one. I hate when they do this. Two patties is a double! 'Hamburger/Cheeseburger' implies ONE patty, not two. Don't mess with established semantics, people!! Fries: Fresh, tasty and they give you a lot of them! Ask for the Cajun fries if you like some extra flavor. I don't see how some reviewers dislike these fries. They're fresh and thick cut which, if you've ever made fries for yourself (from fresh potatoes, not frozen from a bag), you'll know that they're not supposed to be super crispy! Price: A little much for lunch. My opinion is that fast food lunch should be under $10 and I routinely pay a little over that. Their drinks are seriously overpriced compared to other places. I actually don't buy drinks if I'm ordering to-go. Other points: The service isn't exactly fast because they make your burger and fries when you order it so don't expect instantaneous delivery of your meal after ordering. The store itself is clean, well lit and laid out well. Parking is at the Arboretum lot which can be good or bad depending on when you're there. read more
