Adj: New Novelty Store with a lot of cute stuff!…read more
Ahh, my kids wanted to check this store out. It's definitely a fun place for kids. We had tried to come by in July sometime as it looked like it was newly opened, but when we got there it wasn't ready so we ended up shopping at Five Below next store. This time, we were able to finally shop at this brand new Miniso.
Southgate Plaza isn't a shopping center we frequent a lot, but we come by to eat at Yum Buffet every so often, and after a big meal, we like to walk around at one or more store in the plaza to walk off some of our overindulgence, oops (gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins after all, lol).
In any case, we're glad to see that most of the vacant stores, some of which had been vacant for a few years since the pandemic years, have now been filled with new tenants, and Miniso is definitely a welcomed store, I'm sure for Southgate Plaza.
So I had assumed that Miniso is a Japanese company b/c of its name, but apparently Miniso is a "global lifestyle and variety store chain founded in Guangzhou, China, in 2013 by Chinese entrepreneur Ye Guofu," according to Google, haha. At first, Miniso started with "a heavily Japanese-inspired brand identity, utilizing minimalist design cues, Japanese script on packaging, and associating with Japanese design concepts to position itself alongside brands like Muji and Daiso."
Ha, so I was right that it's trying to be like a Japanese novelty store. BUT, as Miniso grew rapidly outside of China, it "shifted part of its strategy toward licensed intellectual property (IP) products, partnering with major global names like Disney, Marvel, and Sanrio to offer popular blind boxes, plushies, and themed merchandise."
So that's why this store if FILLED with licensed novelty items with characters you will definitely recognize from anime, and brands like Sanrio, Disney, and more! My kids particularly like the Hello Kitty, Miffy, and Pooh characters, but there are lots of less cutesy characters too, such as superhero characters from Marvel.
From T-shirts and hoodies, to fanny packs and cross body bags, to sling bags and backpacks, there were so many different styles and colors to choose from if you were looking for a purse/bag. Another section of the store had beauty, bath and body, and cosmetics, as well as haircare stuff, and the back of the store had a lot of cute food like drink cups, mugs, water bottles, tumblers, lunch boxes and even bento boxes.
Everything's super cute w/characters printed on, but most items were on the pricey side. However, they do periodically put certain categories/sections of items and/or brands/characters on sale, so be sure to check out the store regularly. We had fun checking out this huge store, it's definitely the biggest Miniso stores we've been to around Sac. And as a standalone store, I think it's way bigger than even the one on the 2nd floor at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville. We plan to be back, especially for finding a gift for our kids' friends, this would be an easy place to find the perfect item.
