Wow. Just wow. After a long and strenuous battle of getting out of Fitness Works clutches, I'm back in them again. I joined fitness evolution on a special promotion in January. $10 a month with no contract, cancel anytime. I get a charge on my card for $39 on March 20th for "Fitness Works ABC*. I begrudgingly call Fitness Works they tell me that apparently my account was never cancelled, (I sent in a written cancellation 8 months ago with no payments since.) They tell me to call customer service, so I do. They lady tells me my account has been cancelled for 8 months and she is not sure why I got a charge. She asks for my cancellation letter and a copy of my bank statement. I give it to her. She calls me back 10 minutes later and tells me oh looks like you joined fitness evolution in January. Apparently Fitness Works "merged" with Fitness Evolution. The $39 charge was an "annual fee", that I certainly did not agree too. She asks me if I have my contract, I told her I didn't have it and that Fitness Evolution never gave me a copy. I asked her if she had it, she told me that they where still getting all of the paperwork from the gym. I asked this ignoramus if I can send her a written cancellation like I did previously. She declined, and told me the new management was cracking down on cancellations. So, Fitness Works do you make it a habit of blindly charging your customers cards without any documentation? You have no problem charging my card without my knowledge or approval, but you make me jump through hoops to cancel my membership with your shitty gym. Peace. read more

Signed up for this gym before it even opened. I got the premier membership and find that I'm not using the classes so I decided to go down to the basic. Their new prices means I would have limited days to go in which is fine with me. But they wanted to charge me what is equivalent to 5 months of membership to to make this change. So I just cancelled without any fee. This is so short sighted on their behalf. It cost them nothing to change my membership and only the same amount of time as it did to cancel. They will lose out on the revenue of all my future months of membership. New management is not very bright and I don't see this gym staying around for much longer. Definitely going the way of the big corporate fitness club chains since change of management/ownership. Becoming pushy, sales driven, and gimmicky. Manager seems to think telling the trainers to wear their orange shirt is more important than smiling, talking to members, or tidying up the facility as he walks by water bottles & used paper towels. What's more is the two trainers that never wore the orange shirt are both female & in very very good shape. I'd think its better marketing for them to show that they 'walk the walk' to clients/members/potential clients. Still get a good workout here (equipment hasn't changed), but the overall vibe is changing fast and not for the better. My girlfriend trains with a trainer there a few times a week & I can tell you when employees aren't happy as they once were, it permeates. Only thing that changed was ownership & management. Who can pass up a gym membership for $9.99/month with a pool and hot tub right? So we signed up. Yes, it's true the facility is not quite as nice or clean as some of the premier gyms, but not enough for me to complain about, I felt that it was a good value. The problems were with billing and consistent turnover of managers, including the general manager (3 while I was there). My wife signed up for all the membership with all the classes, I signed up for the basic membership and we added on the kids club (which was very fairly priced). My wife decided the next day she didn't want the classes (we have a membership at Power MMA as well, great gym) and they happily cancelled her membership and dropped her down to the basic membership. Except they kept billing her for the premier membership. This took several months to resolve (they were nice every time we brought it up, but the person who we spoke to was never employed long enough for us to get the same person). We had the same issue with kids club, with double billing etc. They would credit us, then it would happen again. They were always nice, but never got it right. We were always told "sorry, we changed management again" or "sorry, we changed systems" or "we changed billing companies" etc. But, they would fix it, credit us back and we would give them another try. Eventually we came to point where we were leaving for 3 months, would have a newborn after that. We still had our other gym membership and classes, and due to the management changes, billing issues etc, we decided to just cancel our Fitness Evolution membership. Well, of course they tried to talk us out of it. They said "let us freeze our account. There will be a small maintenance fee ($5 a month total) and then you can come back when you're ready and keep the same pricing. We though, ok, we'll try that. It is a cheap gym and it's close. So we froze our account. Went in today to turn the membership back on and guess what? New general manager (Jesse) no more Kwon or Madea/Malea (sp?) So Jesse was cordial, but said "sorry, doesn't look like they froze it correctly, you can't have your old membership, you need to pay the new pricing". I said "look, you can show some professional integrity and honor what I was told, sign us up for the $9.99 and have 3 more members, or not." He said take a hike. Pretty short sighted. Had they let us turn our membership back on as promised, I'd be on here giving a favorable review about how they had some growing pains when new but they kept their word and worked it out. I'd be telling friends family and strangers to check them out. Instead, I'm here telling you all that they can't manage their billing, their accounts, and they don't keep their word. 4/23/13 ~ (3 stars) I joined in Jan. when they were still doing their "soft" opening. The gym is nice and clean, the kids club workers are nice. My only down falls so far are the kids club still is not finished and my major issue has been billing issues from day one. I would've given it 4.5 stars if I didn't have those issues. 5/6/13 ~ Most of my billing issues "supposedly" have been resolved but I'm still waiting to see them post to my bank account. 6/6/13 ~ All but one of my billing issues have been credited back to my account. I guess it really comes down to you get what you pay for, the kids club STILL is not finished and I can't get a response when I leave a message to resolve my final issue. Cheap = low quality service. 4/17/14 ~ In February I finally decided to cancel my membership, the gym was doing nothing but going downhill. They were running through managers so anytime I brought up a complaint a new person would be there. The kids club still had been finished, parents are donating toys since they won't invest in them. And it really wasn't worth the money, I'd rather pay more and go back to LA Fitness. So I turned in my paperwork with the last bill date for March. April rolls around and a payment is withdrawn from my account. I go into the gym at 8:20 am speak with the helpful front desk worker. He informs me that everything was entered correctly into the computer but the payment still came out and that he can't do anything else the manager will be in at 9am. Now I could've left but I didn't want to come back so I sat in the kids club with my daughter to wait the 30 min (side note: the kids club workers are amazing caring people). Needless to say I sat and waited until 9:35 am before the manager showed up. He then had to take a copy of my cancelation paperwork copy and said he'd call me around 4 or 5 pm that day. 4:30 pm rolls around and I haven't heard anything so I call and leave a message. The front desk worker calls me back and says they are reversing your charges. Whew!! That was a headache to deal with, again I can't seem to at it enough you get what you pay for. I thought this gym was fine while I went to it. I also have a membership at LA Fitness and joined this one because it's closer to my work so I could go during my lunch break. I canceled 5 months ago because the LA Fitness in East Mesa opened and didn't want to pay for both. I went down there with a letter in writing but was told to email. Was still being billed after contacting them. Then I called and was told my membership was canceled over the phone. Am stilling being billed. Now I called and they're telling me I have to go down and do it in writing and fill out a form. WHAT THE HECK! That's what I tried to do months ago!! I don't know if the people who work there are just too imcompetent but now my mom and brother are canceling their memberships and switching also because it just isn't worth the hassle. This gym is dirty and no offense to some of the people going, but people never wiped off equipment when using, locker and bathrooms were always a mess. I like cleanliness anywhere. FALSE ADVERTISING ALL THE WAY. I cancelled my membership about six months ago. Then I get a card in the mail to come back SAYING TO JOIN FOR AS LOW AS $1 down and $10 per month. So I went there and the kid wanted to charge me first & last month $20 PLUS a $60 admin fee. I said No, I want to join for what this card says. He says I can't. He cannot come up with a reason except that he cant do it. OF COURSE I get very upset and told him it is FALSE ADVERTISING on the card. The card did not state any stipulations or reasons WHY I could not rejoin at the price showing on the card. By the way... I payed first and last month when I started with this gym when it was Spectrum. They got bought out by this horrible company and the new management is horrible! I have been back and forth for a month and a half trying to get my last months fees back since they billed me. I have talked to 6 different people at both locations and corporate. I keep being told they will call me back and I have yet to hear back from anyone. I am actually waiting for a girl named Stephanie to call me back right now, she was supposed to call me back in 15 minutes.. It has been 7 hours and I have called back twice. This is unacceptable. I was with this gym for two years and had personal training with them the entire time and I was warned they would try and charge me one last payment so I stayed on top of it and no one is able to get back to me. so I joined fitness works/fitness evolution in april. They told me there would be $10 a month and an annual $40 membership fee in july. They also said that the membership could be cancelled or paused anytime, and no contracts. So a couple months go by and im getting bored of this gym, mainly because they don't have some of the ammenities that I like (punching bags, running tracks, etc.) And on july 10th I decided to go ahead and pause my membership because im not using it. The counterperson says they can only pause for military or medical leave. Then I said okay just cancel it. The counterperson said the $40 annual membership is about to come out on the 15th, we usually require at least 5 days notice of cancellation, so just be aware that the fee might still be charged, but if you do get charged, just bring back in this cancellation form and we'll refund your money. So I said okay, and I also canceled my kids club membership as well. Well low and behold, on the 15th guess what comes out of my bank account, not just one $40 fee but two! They charged one for me and one for the kid's club too. So obviously I was upset and called the gym. The girl on the phone told me to bring in my cancellation forms and they'll figure it out from there. I was at work so I had my wife bring them in and they told my wife the general manager would call me back. So while im at work, I got a call from crystal davis, the general manager for fitness works. She said in a nutshell, no we are not going to refund your money becausec they are valid charges, you were told this in person and in writing when you signed your contract. Obviously I became very upset at this point, and I said that is a bogus policy and it is a grey area. They could make an exception considering that it was technically not within 5 days because I canceled it on the 10th which is exactly 5 days away from the 15th. Plus they shouldn't have charged an annual fee for the kids club anyway seeing as my daughter's not a member. So after bi*ing at her for a few minutes I demanded to speak with someone who would actually try to help me. She gave me the number to customer service and said they make the final decision. So I called them and spoke with a woman. I told her my situation and she then put me on hold, after about 3 minutes on hold she came back and told me the exact same thing the manager crystal told me. I demanded that she refund my money, otherwise I would tell my story to everyone who would listen. She basically gave me the run around and said I need to talk to the manager crystal, who just told me they were the ones to help in customer service. I then asked to speak to a manager and she said there was no one higher than her and refused to transfer me to anyone else. I then hung up the phone out of sheer frustration. So I then called the gym back and asked for crystal, the operater said she's in a meeting but they would have her callme back. So a few hours later, I called back because I had not received any call back yet, they said she had left for the day but would be back Saturday morning(which is today) so I call back today and asked for crystal, they said sure and put me on hold. I was on hold for almost 5 minutes, then I said screw it, I live right behind the gym so I walked up there while still on the phone. I walked to the gym all while still on hold, almost for 10 minutes. I came in and the girl said she was sorry and forgot to transfer me, she then said that crystal wasn't there and that she'd be back monday. I told the girl that I think she's dodging me and passing the buck to other people. After I said that, the girl asks another employee, a well built and buff salesman, to talk to me. I guess because I was intimidating her. I wasn't yelling or being rude but I could see how'd she be uncomfortable in that situation. The buff guy was not a manager of any type, he had no way of helping out with the situation, so I dont know why she sent him over anyway, but he said that he would pass my information along back to crystal and have her get back to me..AGAIN! This is the kind of s* you deal with when you get membership with a gym that has "annual membership fees", they're money grubbing and sheisty, and will find any way they can to screw you out of money on the fringe of what's legal. I'm out $80 for a gym that im not even going to use. So, tell me, is this fair? I know it's technically "legal" but what's fair about double dipping two membership fees out of me then refusing to refund them because I canceled on the 10th instead of canceling on the 9th? Plus how was I to remember this one detail after almost 3 months after I signed up? It's not like I intentionally waited til the last minute to fo it. I will never go to a gym that does annual membership fees again because if this, buyers beware of cheap gym dues because stuff like this is how they make the real money. read more

I joined the gym but not because of their great customer service or friendly staff. I had seen enough bad reviews regarding the staff so I had little expectations. BUT the one thing I did expect was a thank you for your business after I signed up 2 contracts, and inflated membership payments. I honestly think she was waiting for me to thank her for the worst tour ever, unprofessionalism in sales while she argued with the front desk guy that tried to walk me to someone else to join (the customer doesn't care to see a behind the scenes sales war), and for her super hurried explanation of everything - she was a walking disclaimer. I would not refer a friend there because they have zero value in you doing business with them - they just want that widget and feel no need to thank a customer. I could keep going, but the bottom line is you are a sale to them, and they don't care to hide that fact and play professional. A few positives about the gym - the Zumba instructors are awesome (subcontracted- not on the staff), the pool looks nice and is being redone -set to open later this month, they have lots of equipment, and they offer over 90 classes. read more

Some pros are the amazing staff that make every experience personable, great kids club that listens and respects my parenting style, great group training classes that push you to the max (Julio's classes are my favorite), they are always cleaning & the gym is very well kept up. I go during the daytime & I never run into any issues with the gym being to crowded. Every month I notice more and more equipment being brought in. My daughter asks me every day to take her to the gym because of how much she enjoys it, especially the staff. Love this place & the people that run it! read more

I got grandfathered in for a gym they bought out. So far the staff has been nice. I have been going there for over a year or so. It is clean. I like the theater cardio room. If nothing is playing just ask and they will turn something on. I like that it has a pool, racket ball, free weights, and cable machines. read more

I was looking to join a gym in my area and went to about 4 locations and this one was by far the cheapest option for me and my son. The membership is cheap and so is daycare which is awesome. I have been pretty happy with the services here. I go in the morning and its not too crowded. I also like the movie room where I can do some cardio and not get bored. I was okay with this gym at first. The equipment isn't bad and the instructors are nice but management went downhill fast. I have gone to classes where no instructor ever showed up and one where an instructor from another class just happened to be there and agreed to sty late on the spur of the moment. Their "movie" room with treadmills and a big screen has been broken for over 2 months and they show no signs of fixing it. Not recommended. Customer service review..will not sign up for a membership. Went there to check out the place and see what they have. I walked in there was 4 people at the front desk. Asked for the purpose of my visit, told them that I want to see if it's worth signing up. I was given a piece of paper to fill out....The liability. ...As the front desk guy said. And then he turned around and all I could see was his back. Didn't make me feel welcomed. Also there was a lady at the front desk who didn't even smile at me when I walked in or was standing in front of her. No eye contact either. Didn't feel welcomed again. The tour itself ... basic and didn't make me feel like they want me there. Didn't show me the pool. Just pointed where it's at. Monthly membership was $10. With classes $20. processing fee 50 if use a credit. 30 if debit. The person giving the tour kept playing this....teenage gangsta. With funny gesture and one eye kept blinking at me for some reason- seemed like he was trying to be cool. Customer service didn't wow me. Very young and inexperienced staff up front. read more

I use to like going to this gym but obviously the new manager has really messed up a solid gym. First thing he does is move "everything around", it's like a dog peeing on everything to leave his mark. Why screw up a perfectly set up place just to validate your coming. The space usage is seriously flawed and now the free weights have 6 options to stand in, instead of 15 where the station was. The free weights section is now in a pathway where everybody uses so it is somewhat dangerous to walk by while people are swinging weights doing curls. Then they turn all the stationary machines at a 45 degree angle so you stare off in a weird direction and it takes up more room. Not to mention placing several stationary units in front of a yoga/zumba room front door. When class lets out they fight to get through the machines. somebody is going to get hurt. I brought it up to the new manager who brushed my opinions aside and went on about his business. Management if you are reading this get a clue. I am not the only one who objected. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!!! Joined this gym in February and had nothing but issues from rude staff/management to billing issues. I joined in February and they billed me once in Feb and twice in March. I brought it to the staff's attention and they came up with every excuse in the book why that extra money was pulled out, basically they kept running me around with excuse after excuse. I never really got a solid answer as I why I was billed twice. I finally got frustrated and just left. I canceled my membership after that, yet they still billed me maintenance fees. I signed up for personal training Feb 14 and I was told the $135 was taken out that day, it was not till I went and complained about being billed extra in March when they told me I was being sent to collections for the $135 payment that they had told me was already paid but In fact wasn't. I was beyond pissed that It was not taken out when they said it was, so I called guest services and was transferred to Kim Garcia who I got no where with because she takes 2+ weeks to return a call. Every time you call her back, even if it's immediately, she never answers. Sooooo frustrated!!!! So I find out on May 1st (after I had canceled my membership and had not used any of the sessions because my trainer up and left the gym without any notice) that they pulled the $135 dollars from my account WITHOUT my permission and while I was working on things with Kim at guest services! DO NOT give them your account number, I am now having to stop payments on any future unnecessary payments they try to pull. I WOULD NOT recommend this gym to anyone, yeah it's cheap but pay the extra 10 dollars and go elsewhere, where there a no billing issues and rude management/ staff! read more

I've been a member of Fitness Evolution for over two years. While the gym itself and its equipment are satisfactory, I have to give a thumbs down on the management of the building. For the two years i've been a member, their plumbing sucks. Sinks leak thousands of gallons of water; doesn't anyone ever check the plumbing in this place? I love using the sauna, WHICH DOESN'T WORK most of the time. The controls have been missing ever since I've been a member. I cancelled my membership, and was never even asked what my reason was for leaving. When they printed my final invoice, it showed my reason for quitting was NO TIME. Really? Shady sales practices. I signed up for one on one time with a personal trainer for 3 months. I was told the cost would be $280/month ($35 for 8 sessions). They had me pay 280 upfront for the first month and then charger me 280 for the next 3 months. When I questioned them about why I was charged an additional 280 they told me that my first payment was a down payment. During my whole conversation with the PT sales representative nothing was mentioned about a down payment. On the contract, they have the initial payment listed as a down payment with 3 affitional payments of 280. Unfortunately, you dont see your contract until after you sign it and they email it to you. So, basically, you are signing the agreement based on the information they give you. I highly recommend having them print out the contract before signing it and double checking their figures. I've spoken to several trainers and have been told that I'm not the only client that has had this same experience and that it sucks for them because they have lost several clients because of the PT sales practices. One of the trainers even called the sales people shady and that several trainers have left because of their sales practice. This alone speaks volumes about this place. If the employees can't even trust management why should consumers. I've been a member of Fitness Works/Fitness Evolution since 2006. This experience was the final straw for me. I am giving my notice to cancel my membership with this gym. I can only imagine the run around I'll get to do that. read more

So I really recommend going to a different gym. If you ever move or just don't want to continue at this gym because you have found a better one they will just keep charging you. I've cancelled my account with them on Jan 27 2014 and it is now July 8 2014 and they are still charging me. I call every month to cancel and to get my money back (which is now over $100) but all they tell me is that corporate has to look at my account. I moved out of the area and forgot to discontinue my membership before I left, due to all the hassles of moving. I called today to cancel my membership and was told that I have to cancel the membership in person at the gym. Huge inconvenience, and you can't tell me that you can't cancel a membership, come on, get with the times, we are in the digital age now. Anyhow very upset, will have to book a plane ticket to fly out to Arizona, just to cancel this memnbership. Poor customer service. Louise Mueller I joined this club when it opened as Fitness Evolution more than three years ago. Due to numerous medical problems I requested and paid for a personal trainer that would be knowledgeable about how to work with my problems. Every time I turned around my "trainer" left for one reason or another. There were times I only had a trainer for a few weeks. In April 2014, the owner at Fitness Evolution, knowing all about the problems, talked me into signing up for another 36 session and promised he would work with me privately. He kept his promise, and worked with me w/o charge during the times I could be there. However, due to medical problems I missed a lot of time. I was very ill from mid- December 2014 until Feb.2015, and when I returned I was told the gym had been sold. I spoke to a man, whom told me he was one of the owners, and explained all of this and asked for a refund of $1800.00 He asked me to give them a chance, and although I had reservations about it, I thought it would be fair to do just that. I was set up with a personal trainer who was good, but once again my medical problems became worse and I haven't been able to work with a trainer since then. Also, the trainer they gave me told me he wasn't leaving, and you guessed it, he left last week due to management problems. I have requested the refund of the money left, and was told they do not give refunds regardless of the situation. I offered to give them letters from my doctors and PT and was told, their policy is not to refund money. I gave them the chance as requested, the trainer left, and my medical problems continue to get worse so even if he had stayed, I am unable to work with a trainer. They suggested I go to the gym in Gilbert where they have a qualified person that helps people like me in the pool. Why should I have to drive all the way to Gilbert for that when I live directly across the street from the Mesa gym, and why isn't that offered at every gym. There are many folks at the Mesa gym that could use that. I will now contact my lawyer to see about getting the refund. Early Morning staff regulars are great! No issues but management and late morning staff have terrible manners. I didn't even have my membership for a week and already had a bad experience. I was next in line to be checked in. I was not acknowledged at all, no I will be right with you or hello, Some elderly lady comes in behind me and instead of asking who was next, she reached out to the elderly and checked her in. Well since I was ignored I proceeded to go in and they stopped me and told me that I had to check in. I threw my keys in the counter and told the lady that I did not appreciate being disrespected. At that point I was fuming with the lady and didn't want to hear anything she had to say. The general manager was right there, common sense would say that he should have stepped in to put out the flames but instead he did nothing. i have never written an online review before, but this situation made me so upset I felt I needed to take the time to warn others. I joined this gym a year and a half ago because it was cheap and very close to my home. since that time the turnover rate for all employees (trainers, front desk, janitors, and ALL management) has been nonstop. the only thing consistent I can say about evolution is the lack of upkeep. the gym constantly has broken equipment. employees put an out of order sign on the broken equipment and it stays that way for months. there is a cracked mirror in the dumbbell room that has been broken since I joined. the bathrooms are filthy with broken lockers and they all have dirt and hair in them. evolution has had constant problems with leaks from the roof, so on any given rainy day there will be garbage cans placed all over the gym to collect the raindrops. the womens locker room is closed all the time due to flooding, or sewer back ups, so women are forced to go to cvs or the tanning salon next door to use the bathroom. when they do decide to have someone repair the womens locker room, they have the MALE workers repair it during open business hours, so if women want to use the restroom or to change, they have to do it while MEN are working in there, and management does not even warn their female customers that men are in the womens locker room. there are also constant billing issues that take months to get resolved. overcharging as well as being billed after cancellation has been an ongoing problem. so I have tried to look past all this for 18 months, but what made me finally break was the dishonesty from the "manager" . new investors have been brought in to salvage the place. one of the changes is those of us who have the $19.99 plan are allowed to bring in guests with this plan as it states on our contract. the investors have decided to take that away from us. to ease the anger from those of us who had guest privileges taken away, the manager told us we can downgrade to 9.99 a month. so a week later when I asked at the front desk to downgrade, I was told it was now going to cost $39.99 to downgrade! that was NEVER told to me when I sat down with the "manager" (I use that term LOSELY!!!!!). apparently that was a last minute decision and even though I am a loyal customer (going 5-6 times a week) the manager refused to waive that fee even though during our initial conversation the $39.99 fee was NEVER brought up. Needless to say I am done with that gym. management is dishonest and could care less about the care and maintenance of the gym as well as the customers. so please do not go to this gym. again I have never written an online review, but after putting up with this gym for so long and being treated the way I have, I just had to get it out there. read more
