I continue to go to Fitch because I want to support local businesses, but every time I go, I ask myself why? The staff always act like they are very put out to help you find something. This is particularly true at the back desk, where the two women I have encountered there seemed like I was asking them a huge favor to leave their chair and help me locate something. They are surprisingly unfriendly for a local business in a small town. The cashiers are also unfriendly. They are all milling around the desk, but no one chats with you or shows any interest. I can't tell what the problem is, as it seems like a perfectly nice place to work, but everyone acts like they hate their job. read more

Some of the most unprofessional people I've ever met in a business. It's like pulling teeth to get some9je to call you back so I had to go up there 3 diff times and each time they would continue to put you off on another person until supposedly the person you needed wasn't in today. Very rude once I got there like I was interrupting there day bc I needed something. I d rather chop my trees with a ace and make my own lumber than to go back up there. Couldn't give negative stars so I had to give 1. read more

Here's the thing. I've been here twice - once when I first moved here 7 years ago & today. Both times I left swearing I'd never step foot into the place again. Absolutely no customer service skills. read more

Best hardware / lumber store around! Staff is so helpful, never patronizing, and are very much problem solvers.

I understand anything can happen, but the negative reviews on here are clearly written by people who work at Lowe's and Home Depot, because this is hands-down the best hardware store in the state of North Carolina. It's been in business for over 100 years and the owners promised me they do not plan to close for another century and thank heavens for that because they have everything you need and none of the broken, dank, breakable, Chinese-made junk that you can find the big box stores. The other people who said they make too much noise or didn't have answers to their questions Should stick to aimlessly wandering the massive hallways at Home Depot and writing their rueful one star reviews, while the experts at Fitch look out for their customers . read more

Being a woman at a lumber yard, who knows some but not a ton of information about measurements and types of wood can be intimidating. But they were very helpful and accommodating to my needs. The price of wood right now is insanely expensive, but the quality was great. I will be coming back for future projects. read more

I recently replaced older sliding doors that made up a "Florida room" with Marvin windows from Fitch. What a makeover! Bill Bohuslaw handled my effort from their side. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful from beginning to end handling all the questions and revisions to my plans and drawings. The price point for the windows was competitive, and the delivery was flawless. All in all it was great service from a local company that has great customer service. I will definitely return for our next home project! read more

I'm always about supporting local businesses over large stores and have always used this store in the past but my experience today was very disappointing. I purchased plywood sheets which required 4 cuts in total. There was no mention of a charge when I placed my order. I noticed an extra $20 charge on my total and enquired. Told that's the shop charge for cutting...at which point I said a charge was never mentioned. No apology or form of rectifying the issue. Told it was 20 minutes work to make 4 cuts. Come on!! I could've done it quicker with a hand saw. Not being transparent about additional charges is disgraceful but to think it's justifiable to charge 20 minutes labour to make 4 cuts is outright robbery. OUTRAGEOUS!!! read more

Called and asked for estimate on higher end replacement parts for porch repair in January 2017....still waiting. Guess they are making enough money they don't need any more. Obviously they do not value us as a customer. read more

The price point is a bit higher than Lowes or Home Depot usually, but it is completely worth it. A family owned business that's been in the area for almost a hundred years, the people I've worked with at Fitch's have always been helpful and extremely knowledgable. It's the sort of local, hometown hardware store that used to exist everywhere, and is rapidly disappearing. My one frustration is the hours they keep. They are open from only 9-12 on Saturday and not at all on Sunday. This often makes it difficult to go to them as much as I would like, especially when working on a weekend. project. read more

Very good service on a recent visit. I bought $1.02 worth of screws and nuts but was treated like I was worth a thousand times that. I don't get that kind of service all the time at Lowe's. The only drawback I have is that their hours are limited. read more

Sold us a Ford 3000W generator for $750 before hurricane Florence came through. Later we looked on online and they sell for $350. I understand business means profit, but price gouging at the expense of the community is not ideal. read more

Horrible service and was treated poorly! I purchased wood from these people and all they had to do was deliver it on time, they said they couldnt cut it down to fit or coat it or anything so literally all they had to do was deliver a slab of wood on a date agreed upon a month in advance. The day of the delivery I called to check to see what time to expect the wood to show up I was rudely told by Sc*** that " I" gave the wrong date and I wouldn't be getting my delivery and I should have done something to figure this out sooner. I have worked in customer service, and I would never fault the customer for my mistake and berate them on top of it. Because of their screw up I had to reschedule with my contractor who is incredibly busy and now will not be able to complete my project on time. I see other reviews of this place saying how good they are, and I can only surmise that they were written by employees or the owners because I cannot imagine them being able to produce competent results. So if you are looking to spend your hard earned money do not spend it at Fitch Lumber unless you enjoy horrible service with a rude attitude. read more

I have had a great experience with Fitch Lumber, and will continue to shop there. Staff is courteous and helpful; even came out to my house to fix a tricky problem. A great 'buy local' option with good selection and reasonable prices. read more

I have never been sorry to have looked at Fitch first. Even when they tell you the don't carry something, they try to suggest where else to look. And the way they have worked with contractors, as well as with me as a homeowner, is like a living textbook on what customer service should be. Try to understand this the way it's meant: If DisneyWorld had a hardware/lumber store, it would be Fitch. They are that conscientious. read more

Fitch Lumber company is by far my favorite place to go when doing any home project. Whether it be gardening work, or plumbing fixes, the employees at fitch always point me in the right direction. As well, everyone there is very nice and willing to help, unlike the bigger lowes and home depot etc. read more

Our contractor used Fitch Lumber when building our home. Everyone at Fitch was extremely helpful when selections needed to be made. So pleased with the quality and professionalism at Fitch. Love working with a local business that gives back to our community! read more

I'll tell anyone who'll listen: Fitch Lumber is my favorite business (of any type!) in Chapel/Hill Carrboro, maybe anywhere. I always try and find stuff here before I go looking on Amazon or elsewhere. Today I made a mistake when putting together an Ikea dresser and couldn't, for the life of me, figure out how to undo it. I got more and more frustrated and was ready to give up until I remembered: Fitch Lumber! The amazing staff had helped me with random questions before, so I loaded my dresser drawers into the car and headed over. The gentleman working in the shop knew exactly what to do, fixed my drawer, and then showed me how to do the same for the rest of them (without a single ounce of condescension in his voice!), and then wrote 'no charge' on my shop slip. This is 100% typical of all the interactions I've had at Fitch. I'm a young woman little shop experience, and I've been floored by how patiently and kindly my questions have always been answered by the staff here, even if I'm not making a big purchase. Coming here always brightens my day. As others have mentioned, their hours aren't as flexible as some, but I'm happy with a small inconvenience and just take it as a sign that they prioritize their employees' well-being, something few businesses seem to do. read more

This is the finest hardware store in town. This is pretty much the only place I go when I need to refill the nail gun or get some more caulk. I do lots of home improvements, now that I'm a single guy. I'm not gonna be bringing my dates home to some dump. read more

I never thought I'd be so excited to share my experience at a hardware store, but Fitch Lumber & Hardware really impressed me. The week before Christmas, I decided I needed to finally hang those pictures that had been leaning against the wall since we moved in, replace some light bulbs, and get my housemate a key to the bottom lock (the one he made when we first moved in didn't fit and we'd been too lazy to remedy the situation, so we just locked the deadbolt). I wandered in, looking totally lost, with an oddly-shaped lightbulb from one of our ceiling fans in hand. I was quickly approached by a really nice man who showed me exactly where the correct light bulb was, then directed me to the counter to get my key made. The man at the key counter was super friendly and efficient, and also helped me find the appropriate hooks for my various works of art. The prices are really fair, and the selection is great for a non-Home Depot, non-Lowes hardware store (those places are so overwhelming, I generally have a panic attack and leave within two minutes). I'll definitely be going back the next time I manage to do some work on my house. read more
