We were driving from Fargo, North Dakota to Minneapolis and looking a spot for dinner - something classic with some history. So my search of Yelp, Trip Advisor, and Google all seemed to point me to the Fisher's Club, located on Middle Sprunk Lake in Avon, Minnesota. When we arrived, it looked like just what we were looking for. Upon entering we were warmly greeted by Hal, the owner, and escorted to a table near the back of the restaurant with a view of the lake. Now Fisher's Club is famous for their walleye dinners. So we locked in on that right away and ordered two of them. With it we ordered a glass of wine and an excellent Two Hearted Ale, IPA. Our salads were served and my wife loved her Orange Vinaigrette. I ordered their Blue Cheese dressing and did not like it. Not a traditional recipe, and likely not homemade. As we were eating our salads a group of locals sat down near us. All four of them quickly said - "Bring me the broasted chicken". Immediately I thought...Ooops, one of us should have ordered their chicken! When our walleye dinners arrived, we could see that the preparation of the walleye appeared to be the "shore lunch" style for walleye - a very popular style. Normally we would prefer a thicker cracker type crust. This appeared to have something like a semolina flour coating - good and crispy. But lacking, to our liking, in seasoning. So to sum it up, Fisher's Club is a quaint, very old establishment, with wonderful staff. If you're coming our recommendation is come for the chicken, not the walleye. But in any case...you should come. read more

We use to come here 4-5 times a summer. Just stopped by for the first time this year and it will be our only stop. Walleye tasted old. Sunfish and onion rings were great. It was the service that ruined our evening. Never saw our waitress after we ordered. Had to beg for service and even filled our own water glasses from the bar. Took over two hours to get our food, when we asked about an eta they told us 15 minutes before we got our food, actually took 30. Several different servers and never said why it took so long. Food was okay, a chicken salad was ordered and they brought the salad, no chicken, that was another 10 minutes before that came. Good food. Terrible service. read more

The pulled pork sandwich was AMAZING, and the onion rings were honestly the best I've ever had. They were very crunchy with a somewhat thick batter, so keep that in mind if you like thinly battered onion rings. My wife really enjoyed her Black and Blue burger. Food was very "okay". I had the walleye "famous" dinner. So, it was not bad but I wouldn't brag about it honestly. The place has some outdoor space by a lake which make it a fun destination but I think you will have to adjust the expectations regarding the food. read more

We came for the Walleye here and I'm not sure that it lived up to the hype. The restaurant was dark with old school diner like atmosphere. The walleye itself is a good fish and the batter was ok too. We enjoyed great food and music last night. They have a great new tap line with some great beers. The walleye was fabulous. The potato salad and Cole slaw were like the good old days. Good vibe. Jake and family keep making it better every way. This morning we finally had a chance to try the Sunday Brunch! It was exceptional sitting out on the deck with a very unique Fishers menu. Including a la carte items like a walleye filet for $5, or a brioche French toast with choice of berries and real maple. This historic bar and cozy restaurant opened in the 1930s and is still serving its famous walleye dinners (a light breading), potato salad, and other decent food along the shore of Middle Spunk Lake in Avon. Once partly owned by Garrison Keillor, the restaurant is open seasonally (May to December) and also available for booking private events. It has a tremendous amount of character and is a great place to gather with family or friends. It overlooks the Avon public beach. The walleye is good. It doesn't have a fishy taste and is light, not heavy. The place is comfy and cozy. You'll enjoy the old-time artwork on the walls, the 1950s music that plays inside, the old liquor bottle lockers on the walls, or when the weather is nice, you can eat outside on the deck and look at the lake. Some have said the place is overrated. I think it all depends on your expectations. If you're going for the finest food in the area, you're not going to find it here. First- I give the service 4+ stars, very friendly and welcoming. My order was screwed up and the owner was nice enough to remove it from my bill without me asking! The food was so-so at best, ordered a T-bone with salad and they brought me a ham steak with fries... the salad was warm to the touch. The steak was cooked nicely but had an old flavor to it, like it'd been in the freezer a long time. There were folks at about 10 tables inside and maybe 7-8 outside so I can't say they were overwhelmed at 7pm on a Saturday. read more

Four of us made reservations at Fishers Club after hearing it was one of the best restaurants for walleye in Minnesota . We were not disappointed. Ordered was a 2 piece walleye dinner, grilled shrimp dinner, a sweet potato salad with a walleye filet side and a walleye BLT. Every dish was met with rave reviews. My walleye BLT was excellent, the bacon an tomato really complimented the walleye. Cocktails were very reasonable $8 for wine, $6.50 for Cosmopolitan, $4 for a Gin Tonic and $2.50 for an ice tea. We ate outside on the deck overlooking a public beach and it was very nice. The inside of the restaurant was like going back 50 years, lots of windows, wood floor, wallpapered walls. On our way out, the free popcorn in the bar was exceptionally good. Our waitress Kim, took care of us very well. It was a 40 mile drive to Fishers Club for us and very much worth it. Have wanted to check out this talked-about place for a few years, finally made it a point for our anniversary. Service was friendly, cute, old, interesting building. We had hoped for a better view of the lake from inside but the windows are high enough I couldn't really see out very well, hubby was facing wall, tiny table for 2 that felt really close to the next table, like you were part of their conversation. Hubby ordered fish tacos, I ordered 3-fillet walleye, hoping to bring a piece home. Walleye breading was light and not greasy, pretty delicious. I would have been so disappointed if I had ordered the 1 fillet as the fillets are about a third to half as big as what you'd expect, I think 1 fillet would be about a 3-4 oz piece....for $18.95, 3 were $24.95. You get 2 fish tacos for $12.95...a very minimal portion of food for a guy, 3 fish tacos is usually the assumed standard. Needless to say, no leftovers! Even though the walleye was delicious, this was a "been there done that" place for us, glad we went, probably won't go out of our way to go back due to the prices and value. $60 for dinner and 1 drink each, just kinda outrageous considering one was 2 tacos with Sams Club tortilla chips! read more

We stopped by on our way to the cabin and enjoyed a tasty lunch of fish tacos and pulled pork sandwich. Both meals were good and very satisfying. The building isn't much to look at but it has a lot of history, being built back in the 1930's. We sat outside, beach-side, and it was great! Our server was very friendly and did a great job. We'll be back to this hidden gem. Next time we'll have to try the sunfish appetizer ~ highly recommended by my cousin. :) read more

Overrated would be the best way to describe this place. The food isn't bad, but considering the pricing, they really should do better. The walleye tastes peculiar, a bit like pancakes. One of my favorite restaurants... I grew up down the road from here and go back every chance I get. Maybe it's the setting right on the lakeshore, or the outdoor seating, or the scrumptious walleye (as well as perfect onion rings, great reuben, etc.), or the friendly waitstaff, or the live music (on occasion)... We made reservations for 6:45. We were told there would be about a half an hour wait for the food and we were fine with that. What we weren't fine with was sitting for 45 minutes without even as much as a waitress stopping to say "I'll be with you in a few minutes" or "hey guys let me finish up with these few tables over here" I was with my grandmother and neither of us are very picky with the waiting, but when a waitress won't even make eye contact, or look in our direction, we were starting to get angry. At about 7:30-7:45 a wonderful young woman named Libby came in from the outside patio and saw us. She apologized for the wait, explained she was stationed outside and yet she still decided to take on not just our table but one or two other inside tables while also helping her guests outside. The food was amazing, and not badly priced, but the fact that we were ignored for 45 minutes was one of the most frustrating feelings. Not to mention one of the waitress's (who was supposed to be our waitress) seemed more concerned with flirting with the large group of men who had come in after us. Great old time atmosphere but food was below average at best, especially for the price. Walleye batter tastes like equal parts pancake mix and salt. Fish tacos were ok but cold. French fries were limp as if they were heated in a microwave. Food tasted like it came straight from a Sysco truck, as confirmed by the name stamped on the sour cream packet. read more

This was a wonderful place to stop for a good meal! It's located right on the lake so there's beautiful scenery. We sat in the side room with lots of windows, there's also a cute porch you can sit and eat. The club burger was delicious, everyone left full and happy.
