Wrapped up a recent trip to the San Diego area with dinner at Fish 101. Cute little "hole in the wall" with outside seating in front along with probably seating for about 30 inside in the back. The food was good, not great. Mrs. had fish and chips. The fish was tasty but the batter could be crisper. I had the grilled mahi tacos. Tasty, fresh although not super memorable. Youngest had the salmon tacos which he finished quickly but said were just ok. He is definitely not the most detailed of food reviewers! Weirdly, it seems that the burritos come with a small handful of chips but the tacos do not. Having some would have been nice. Pricing was fine as was service for an order at the counter type of place. Parking is on the street which I imagine could be tough on a nice Friday or weekend evening. We went on a Thursday and were able to find a spot right away just down the road. Probably 3-1/2 stars but rounding up. read more

Stopped by while in the area and saw the other fish 101 location first but decided to try this location due to its high reviews. Parking is really strange ?? You park across the street on a dirt street ? The restaurant itself is very unassuming but once you get inside there's a few tables on the side with more seating out back. The pricing here id say is very good/cheap for seafood!! The man taking our orders at the counter was VERY KIND and helpful. However.... We ordered fish and chips and the grilled ahi bowl. I don't really know why this place is rated so high unless the audience really loves unseasoned food. At least they have a shelf of various condiments (malt vinegar, ketchup, salt/pepper, tobasco). Everything was so plain and I got so bored of the flavor, I stopped eating it and didn't take it to go. The fries were solid. Fish was soggy but at least the pieces were giant. At lunch time, it got quite busy but they were able to serve us quick resulting in a quick turnover. Oysters - Fresh, briny, cold, slimy. Sauces were great, specifically enjoyed the cocktail sauce, which had the acidity from the tomatoes with some sweetness. Poke - Brown rice, a salad, soy sauce tuna. Rice was cooked well and came with this spicy mayo. The protein was delicious and seasoned well with soy sauce. A bit on the salty side, so make sure it's consumed with some rice! Baja fish tacos - A delicate taco as the baja fish was grilled. This means that there is very little flavour, instead sauces and veggies needs to be light to compliment the fish. They choose some lettuce, tomatoes and mayo which did not overpower the grilled fish flavour. With so many seafood stalls, I think this one was good but will likely look for other restaurants. read more

The food here is absolutely delicious. Tue configuration is a little bit different than a traditional restaurant. When you arrive, you start by waiting in line and submitting your at the counter. You'll receive an order number and the food will be brought out to your table. The tables are on the back patio or the front patio (there are no tables inside the restaurant). I highly recommend the Grilled Fish Sandwich. This item is on the online menu, but not the printed menu inside the restaurant. The sandwich can be ordered with your choice of mahi mahi, yellowtail, or salmon. The side of Brussel Sprouts were also amazing. They were crispy with a light balsamic glaze. read more

This was just a quick stop to get fish tacos while on our way to LA. I was recommended to try this place out and finally made the stop. It's a surf town so prices are a little on the upper scale. I was gonna try out the fish tacos but decided on a poke bowl. The poke was superrrrr fresh and the brown rice was perfectly cooked. One of my friends got fish tacos and I was able to try one out and WOW just amazing. Also the owners or guys that work here are super friendly and make sure to satisfy their customers and they seem to take pride in the fresh fish. Today was blue mahi day so I had that as my poke and the fish tacos were also blue mahi. We go to Encinitas every summer and always include one meal at Fish 101. I have to say I was disappointed the last two summers, the price keeps going up and the portion of seafood goes down. The flavors were just mid. The ice cream is fantastic and the beer and wine selection is great. I like the menu but the cooking and flavors are just okay. I had lunch at Fish 101 for the first time today and I could not be happier. I was greeted in a friendly way, easily placed my order and seated myself. My Mahi Mahi plate arrived in under 6 minutes and there were a good number of guests there. And, again, the staff member was friendly and professional. The fish was easily the best that I have ever had. It was a generous size and perfectly prepared. No black marks, just lightly bronzed with grill marks. Extremely tender, moist, juicy and flavorful. Came by here last night for dinner with a friend and I'm so glad he suggested fish tacos!! We were headed out to the area and looked up some local spots and decided on Fish 101. When we got there, there was a pretty decent line but thankfully it moved quickly! There was a lot of people dining that night and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. It was fully packed and we stood by the door waiting with some other patrons for tables to vacate. The food came out pretty quickly and I was so pleased with my 3 Baja fish tacos. This place was recommended to us from a family friend since we were staying up the street in Carlsbad. I do have to say that parking here can be tricky but there is that lot across the street. But we try to look at the positive side of things and the fish burritos were reasonably priced here and was filling. If you want to upgrade from Mahi to Salmon it was $3 more and both were delicious. You can choose white or brown rice and price are the same. We also got a kids quesadilla and fries, that was nice for a picky eater in our family. (3 slices) There is an outdoor patio and indoor seating. To get seating inside when it was raining, that can be tricky as well as we got lucky. Service here is friendly. They'll give you a number like Carls and food will come out to you accordingly. There's beer and wine here, I was happy to see some local ones. No, there were no oysters on the menu and we asked. They have a lovely selection of schwag for puchase that looks very cool. Overall, solid spot and always a small crowd from what I hear and witnessed.
