The run was renovated in 2008; here are some lucky dogs shortly after its re-opening!

First Run is the first dog run in the city and a national leader in terms of design and drainage. Honestly, though, I don't think I'd ever bring my dog here if I didn't live a block away. I used to have a mellow golden retriever, and she fortunately never got into conflicts with other dogs. Over the years, however, there have been incidents, earning Tompkins the reputation for being the baddest dog run in the city. The dog run was divided into two areas--one for big dogs, one for small--after a dog was killed in the run several years ago. I now have a 12-pound terrier, and I began bringing him to the dog run to socialize him; he had been found on the street and was pretty crazy. He's still learning to be a dog, but bringing him to First Run has helped. Then, a few years ago, the run was renovated, along with a revolutionary new gravel surface that allows for maximum drainage after a storm; drainage was always a problem after a rainstorm with the old wood chips-and-dirt surface. As a matter of fact, a major problem with the chips is that many dogs like to graze on them, causing potential internal problems; many dogs got worms and parasites whether they ate the chips or not, because it was often so muddy. (And if you think it smells now, you should have smelled it when the chips were down, so to speak!) I originally wrote that there was a Yahoo group, but that has pretty much evaporated; it's been replaced by a Facebook group--which I feel is unfair, only because I was banned from Facebook a few years ago. Oh well; the FB group is apparently pretty active. First Run is an active group, with an over-the-top Halloween parade in the fall, and various activities throughout the year. Recently, in response to the fights and other incidents, there was a pit bull workshop to address how to handle problems before they begin; this is a very proactive group.

Love the size, don't so much love the visitors. I keep finding a weird cross between overly-protective dog owners, non-caring dog owners, and dogs that really don't seem comfortable or happy here. My pup has never had a problem with the park, and I personally love the size of the park. There is ample running-room and weird fenced-in tree pits that the dog can jump into. Neither here nor there.

One of the best dog runs in the city. I've been coming here for years and the city has upgraded this park considerably. They didn't even have water in the part until a few years ago. Now there are nice benches, nice gravel, nice trees and wow wow wow shovels to clean up after your best friend (in case you forgot your plastic bag). My only complaint is that they turn off the water out of season. As though my dog does not need water in the winter time??

Benches are plentiful to sit on and it's nice they provide a hose for water.

Bryant Park in Manhattan has a rich, quirky history and many surprising secrets -- from its days as a poor person's cemetery to hosting over 12 million visitors a year. Between 1823 and 1840, the site was a potter's field -- a burial ground for the city's indigent. Bodies were later moved to Wards Island, and the land became the Croton Distributing Reservoir. The western lawn sits directly above underground stacks holding 3.2 million books and 50,000 reels of microfilm for the New York Public Library. In the 1920s, during subway construction, a replica of Federal Hall was built in the park to celebrate Washington's bicentennial In 1853, the New York Crystal Palace hosted a major world exhibition here. It burned down in 1858. Tesla spent time feeding pigeons in the park; one white bird allegedly inspired him. The park renamed 40th Street & 6th Avenue "Nikola Tesla Corner" in his honour. The Josephine Shaw Lowell Fountain - Visitors toss $3,000-$4,000 worth of coins yearly into this fountain, all going toward park maintenance. In winter, the park transforms into a Winter Village with an ice rink, shops, and restaurants -- built from scratch in just two weeks. Bryant Park is the most densely occupied urban park in the world, with daily visitors often exceeding 1,000 per acre. Guided tours reveal hidden mosaic installations and even a Buddha statue tucked away in the park.

Today being 9/11, we were able to observe many family members coming to this park to place a flower on their loved one's chairs. I am not sure if I would call this place a park but technically I guess it counts as one because it has tables where people can come and sit down and eat or drink their morning or afternoon coffee. There are also random places where kids can play including a carousel and playground for little ones. There are other places where you can grab snacks, coffee, and hand held bites but we didn't try any of those today. We did sit around the table to enjoy our New York bagel and coffee from blue bottles. The trees around the park were super tall which I enjoyed looking at trying to crane my neck as far back as it would bend lol. I appreciated small birds and pigeons that seemed used to being around people. Overall it was a relaxing experience. This park is located nearby other landmarks you can choose to check out after experiencing the park.

It's pretty hidden since you have to go to the end of 51st street and then walk down some steps. There's plenty of poop bags (looks like plastic bags from the veggie section at your grocery store) and the surface is paved brick. It seems as if they just threw up a fence to split off the dog park from the rest of the park. While I liked the park, I didn't dig the vibe of the folks. Maybe it's because I'm not from the neighborhood, but it seemed as if everyone was just antisocial, and it seemed like all of the dogs were antisocial as well. It seemed like a park where the dogs and owners were more mature. I got dirty looks from the old folks who thought my 6 month old Jack Russell mix was aggressive and they left. Nipping, biting and barking is perfectly normal for dogs. People need to chill out. Dogs like to wrestle and hump. It's worth it to check out if you're in the area, but I wouldn't make a destination out of it.
