After 25 years, We got tired of Casella's rising prices and erratic pickups and messages about…read morechanges in a pickup day. That along with the local office no longer allowing you to stop there to discuss and issue (their office doors are now locked) and the fact Casella is now run all of state of Vermont. We contacted Duffys, who is owned and operated in Vermont (!)...got a better rate and moved from every-other-week service we had at Casella's to weekly pickup. We had 92+ gallon containers and now have 62+ gallon containers so effectively we have of the container space to use weekly over our previous Casella service. win-win! The staff and email/rep support at Duffys is excellent. They set up our account with paperless billing, dropped off our new containers a week prior to our first pickup with Duffys so we have plenty of time to use/fill them and their pickup times seem very similar every week. The other best part of this is that Duffys uses a truck that picks up both trash ad recycle at the same time. Both empty containers can be rolled up the driveway together now! No more having to wait for Casella's separate trash and recycle trucks to both come by. In fact during a very recent normal/non-holiday pickup week, we noticed Casella's was a day late picking up our streets recycle. So all of those customers had to wait another day to retrieve their recycle container so they could begin to use it again. We are delighted with Duffys. My neighbor asked me why I switched and once I explained basically what I say here, she made the switch to Duffys the following week! I think there will be others here on my street making the switch to Duffys in time. Casellas is a huge national company spread across the US, while Duffys is a much smaller company locally based who I feel can offer better service, have a rep who is local and who can address issues or a question and you can count on them! If you are considering switching your trash/recycle service or new in the area, please do consider contacting Duffy's before you make your decision.

Okay, I never thought I'd post a passionate review about a garbage & recycling business...but…read moreDuffy's has impressed me so much that it's warranted. I won't mention the company I was using before, but the old company was too expensive AND they were disrespectful (knocked over a recycle bin with a garbage truck & left the recycling strewn across the lawn). This prompted me to call around and get quotes. When I called Duffy's, someone answered the phone with a smile (i could practically hear it through the phone!) and chatted through my options. We settled on what turned out to be the perfect number of toters for my 4-unit building. What pushed me to write this review, however, was a conversation I had today. I don't recall her first name, but the woman who talked me through the new food scrap disposal options with the upcoming July 1st law change was so great. She went through all the possibilities (including doing backyard compost, which would result in less business for them) and genuinely wanted to find the best option for my situation. I have been impressed with Duffy's every time I've called...and I'm even more impressed with their price, which was about $40 less expensive than I was paying before with my previous trash disposal company. I highly recommend Duffy's if they operate in your area.

We were with another St. Albans propane company for close to 20 years. The service with their…read morelatest change of ownership became deplorable. I'm talking about things like taking almost a month to deliver propane in January and then being told that we'd have to pay an emergency delivery fee even though they kept saying they'd deliver next week and then not show up. We were getting nervous at that point because they did let our neighbor, a couple on automatic delivery, run out while they were away. Thankfully their son caught it before the pipes froze. The company's rate of $4.59 a gallon for usage of 300 gallons a year was also an issue with us. We check state reports on average rates throughout the area and when asked why their rates were so high, we were told that other companies have hidden catches. Then, the final straw came when I paid the bill and had proof that the payment cleared my bank account, they kept saying that we hadn't paid and threatened to send us to collection and charged us late fees on top of it. I sent them a copy of the statement that showed the payment was submitted electronically to them and it still took another two weeks to get the situation cleared up. Clearly, their billing department is unorganized. All of these situations made it clear that despite supporting this company for nearly 20 years, it was time to cut ties. Seeing their BBB.org rating plummet to an F also helped solidify that they weren't really working hard to improve things. We started shopping around going with the different companies - Amerigas/Liberty, Bournes, and Rowley. In each case, we simply felt Liberty was there for the customer and not their wallet. After another neighbor switched to Amerigas/Liberty and told us they loved it, we filled out the applications and made the switch There has been one minor glitch that involved us not being told that we had to pay for set-up. I'd asked about fees mentioned in the contract and was told there were no fees. When we were comparing rates, two other area companies told us the first hour of labor is free for set-up, so we assumed that was standard practice in this area. We got our bill and found a charge for set-up. After asking why we hadn't been told, the company quickly acknowledged that we should have and deducted that charge from our account. It took a matter of minutes, I'm not kidding either, it was about five minutes in all to get an answer, something that's refreshing in today's world. Customer service is clearly important to Liberty, and we certainly appreciate being treated like we matter. I would definitely recommend Liberty Propane! We're hooked up and extremely happy. We received our first shipment of propane within one business day of calling to order it, something that hasn't happened in years. Plus, getting a bill for just over $200 instead of the $450 we were paying to get 100 gallons is simply refreshing. If you're still with the company that I haven't mentioned, but many of their customers will know exactly who I'm talking about, make the switch. It's really worth it!
