I rarely leave negative reviews, but after spending thousands on what was supposed to be a…read morestraightforward spa coping replacement, I think it's important to share my experience. The project was estimated to take about five days. Instead, it stretched to nearly three weeks because one issue after another kept coming up. What became most frustrating was that I felt like I had to constantly inspect the work and point out obvious problems as they happened. The new spa coping profile didn't match the existing pool coping, but even worse, one half of the spa coping had a different reveal than the other half (see pics), the bullnose was noticeably uneven, extensive patching was required after the initial pour, and the mastic installation had to be redone. Every time one issue was addressed, another seemed to appear. The final, and still unresolved, problem involved the three spillways between the raised spa and the pool. During the project, the Castro team unnecessarily removed and discarded original spillway stone. They installed replacement stone, but after the spa was refilled, the spillways no longer functioned as they had before the project. Because of the way the replacement stone was installed, water that previously flowed fairly evenly across all three spillways now flows almost entirely through one, with little bit in the middle one, and pretty much no flow in the third. What disappointed me most was what happened next. I wasn't asking Isidoro to immediately fix it. I simply asked him to come back, look at the spillways with me, compare them to the videos from before the project, discuss what changed, and come up with a plan to fix it. Instead, after I had already given him the final payment, he told me it would cost another $1,500 to address the issue and he was too busy immediately to come fix it. He never came to inspect the work in person and on my last phone call with him, he told me to fix it myself and literally hung up on me. I understand that construction projects don't always go perfectly. Mistakes happen. What matters is whether a contractor takes ownership of problems and works with the customer to resolve them. That didn't happen here. If the workmanship issues had been the only problem, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. It was the combination of repeated quality issues, the need to continually monitor the work myself, and the unwillingness to come back and inspect a legitimate concern after the project was completed that left me unable to recommend Castro Pool Services.

Before moving forward, we met with 3 different contractors, and Mike was the only one who really understood our vision. We didn't want to tear out our existing concrete or patio cover, which made the project more complicated, but he was able to design around it and still deliver exactly what we were hoping for. That flexibility was a big reason we chose them. We broke ground on 9/15/25 and everything was complete by 11/10/25!!! It was crazy how fast everything went and he definitely did an amazing job coordinating all the teams to finish in a timely manner. We went with a custom setup that included a raised spa, Baja shelf, and two illuminated sheer descents, and everything came together really well. The spa might just be one of the biggest in town! The water features at night give the whole backyard a clean, finished look, with the lights. We also added the iAquaLink system, which has been super convenient for controlling everything from our phones. Like any build, there were a few minor things that came up along the way, but nothing major, and Mike has been responsive when we needed him. What stood out most is that he didn't disappear after the job was done-- Mike continues to be helpful when we've had questions or needed small adjustments. That kind of follow-through matters with a project like this, and it's a big reason we'd recommend CATAK. We got quotes from several pool remodeling companies and Smart Swim came in right in the middle. We are strong believers on "you get what you pay for," and opted to go with them even though they were not the cheapest. From beginning to end, the guys at Smart Swim were easy to work with and truly wanted our project to come out great. After 30 years, it was time for our pool to have a remodel! Through the remodel, it was uncovered that we had many severe leaks, down to the rebar that needed to be fixed in some areas. Sam was great at making sure we understood the severity and that we were okay with any new costs that needed to be added. Not only did they do our pool, but also installed turf by the pool area and put pavers all around the pool and yard area. We also got the new gray gate installed from them as well, to replace the wooden fence in the yard (between the pool). **Noting that the perimeter wall/wooden top was painted black and sanded/stained by a different company. We truly appreciate their hard work and even when we had an immediate death in the family during their time working on our project, they were very respectful and gave us some space as needed.
