No clue why Chinese food in the south all tastes so ... weird. It all has this strange flavor I can't figure out. Why does something simple like garlic broccoli come in this goopy sweet sauce? It's supposed to be spicy. How much sugar do they put in that goop? I So this place was the same I've experience all over Charlotte. We just moved to the area and chose First China based on other Yelp reviews. We've eaten their Sweet & Sour chicken, Lemon Chicken, General Tsao Chicken, Fried Rice, Fried Wontons, Chicken Mai Fun and Fried Dumplings. The Lemon Chicken was perfect- the batter on the chicken breast was light & crispy, not greasy, which means the oil in the fryer is at the correct temperature. (If it's not hot enough, then the batter absorbs a lot of grease.) The homemade lemon sauce was delicious. The Sweet & Sour chicken had a light, puffy batter, also not greasy, and it came with the typical pink sweet & sour sauce on the side. The Chicken Mai Fun had a lot of flavor, sort of garlicky, with a lot of chicken pieces. The sauce on the General Tsao Chicken was sweet & quite spicy! The batter coating the chicken was nice & light. The reasons I gave 4 stars instead of 5 - the Fried Rice was very bland. The Fried Pork Wontons were ok dipped in the sauce from the fried dumplings, but otherwise would have been bland & dry. We come from the Midwest where all the Chinese food places also have Cream Cheese filled Wontons. No such luck here, but I don't blame the restaurant, as it is probably a regional thing. My husband ate the Fried Dumplings & thought they were ok, but not exceptional. On the one occasion that we ordered takeout instead of eating at the restaurant, they forgot to put one of the items in the bag. We should have double checked before we left. When we got home the phone was ringing & it was the restaurant calling to let us know, which I appreciated, but I still had to make the 10 minute drive back to the restaurant & then another 10 minutes back home again. The big bonus- this restaurant has Cheerwine as one of the selections in their soda fountain. Being new here it was my first experience tasting black cherry goodness of "the nectar of North Carolina." I was hooked after the first sip! read more

The best way to judge a Chinese restaurant is to get sweet-and-sour chicken, General Tso's chicken, and beef and broccoli. The sweet-and-sour chicken was great! The general Tso's chicken was pretty normal, nothing special but not bad. The beef and broccoli was pretty good too. Not bad at all! I tried this place a few years back, obviously I didn't care for it that much considering it took me years to come back. My parents live near by, so leaving their house this afternoon, not having eaten all day we decided to give it a shot. On the recommendation of another review I decided to try the staple sesame chicken. My wife had egg drop soup & egg rolls. Everything was good......not GREAT, but good for what it is. It is all about expectations....this is a generic "fast food" Chinese takeout. That is all. Nothing more, nothing less. This is the best chinese food in the indian trail area. It took forever to find a decent spot and I'm happy to have this place. If you're looking for warm, friendly service...this is not the place. But, the food is consistently good so just stick with takeout and you'll be fine. read more

Good food. Mongolian Beef is different than most Chinese restaurants as it's missing the crispy noodles but it's still good.

This spot is my go-to place for good Chinese good. I found them better than Li's Chinese Cafe in Indian Trail. I've had friends come with me here and they always want to go back. Ordered a large hot and sour soup with some wings , wings where old the breading was hard like a tree bark , the soup was even worse it had huge chunks of onions and nothing else in it I've had an authentic hot and sour soup this literally tested like the bottom of the sink, I ended up getting sick few hours later, never coming here again don't suggest you do either, not to mention the skinny tall rude Asian guy there , it just really goes to show that this place doesn't care what they feed to their customers read more

When they first opened they were good! The best around, unfortunately over the years they have consistently gotten worse. It's very greasy and sloppy and the food doesn't taste fresh. I don't think they change their oil frequent enough either. I used to order the Shrimp with Lobster sauce but gradually the amount of shrimp in the dish decreased and the shrimp tasted fishy. I stopped ordering from them the last few years but tried them again recently and I quickly remembered why I stopped going there. The staff isn't very friendly, not rude but not friendly. read more

HORRIBLE customer service! They get my order wrong tell me well if I can't come to swap the food out they will not do nothing. I item was incorrect, I was not going let the rest of the order get cold. Told them to just give me credit for next time since I have been going there for 11 years. They told me no since the food cost the same. I told them I couldn't make it back there plus again not right to let the other food get cold, once again they said no. General Tso Tofu is the best! Pretty accommodating for vegans - only wish they did veggie dumplings but it seems that is rare in south. Up north they are much more varied and diverse. Here the Chinese food is not as varied but this is about as close as it gets. Having been to China the food of course is very different in America to traditional Chinese anyway - and of course in Europe the Chinese food is different yet again. Their food is great! My husband and I love their Lo Mein, you will not get it better any where else. Most Chinese restaurants we visited in the Charlotte area we never returned to but First China has us coming back for more. The only complaint I have is that some of the people taking my order don't speak very good english and can't answer a question that I may have about something on the menu. We have been loyal customers to First China for years. I don't know what has happened. There may have been a change in management or new cooks- I don't know. The food has always been pretty decent and we love our chinese food in this house so we order often considering the lack of options! Last week, we ordered lunch. The lomein tasted like chemicals!! This is unusual since this what I usually get. I called to let them know about the issue since our food was inedible. I spoke to the owner and he was very disrespectful and responded by telling me "You aren't that loyal of a customer because you don't order everyday" I was amazed that the owner would say that to me! Like I said before, we order often and since we haven't had too big of an issue before the lomein we placed a 65 dollar order for dinner tonight (which I feel is a significant amount of business- especially, since we order about every other week if not more often) Anyway, they forgot to put sugar on our sweet biscuits (We've actually seen them make them and they are just deep fried pillsbury dinner rolls). This isn't that big of a deal, I just wanted to bring it to their attention. When I called, the woman who answered laughed at me. I asked her what she was laughing at and she told me "this is just funny". I think that is incredibly rude. I feel like they think they don't need to treat their customers with respect since there are no other chinese food places in the area. She then put me on the phone with a man and when I asked if he was the manager his response was "no I just cook the best." I hate to say they will be losing customers of over 5 years.
