Lets face it we all love Chinese food, from Generals Tsu's chicken which will make diabetics…read morecringe, to fried rice and beyond it's a comfort food for us. First China is located in a very accessible area of town two stores down from Harris Teeter on Old Monroe. That said their lobby isn't much to look at as if they don't want diners. So, if you're wanting to belly up to a table and get your carbs on, no dice hombre. They packed my meal very well and it was still so hot when I got home, I almost burnt my tongue (I live literally behind Harris Teeter). The shrimp egg rolls were really good! Crunchy, not soaked in grease, and flavorful. The Wonton soup is pretty boring with a barely flavored broth and too much noodle to filling ratio. The same goes for the egg drop soup which I believe used the same broth? Not sure but both were boring. The Crab Rangoons were fairly standard, not bad but not outstanding either. Now onto the main courses! I'm going to start with my least favorable item the pork fried rice. While the rice was perfectly cooked and the meat was plentiful, the execution was off. I almost think the cap from the soy sauce broke off b/c the rice was seriously dark and the soy flavor was off the charts. I didn't enjoy it and this is the third Chinese restaurant to cook this way. I'm not sure if that's the style now, but I don't care for it. As for the protein, I was expecting Char Siu for pork. For those who don't know that's the pork with the red ring and very tasty with notes of Asian goodness. The pork I got was just added to a hot work and not cooked with traditional Chinese methods. Next up was the Lo Mein. The noodles tasted stale to me as if they've been laying around for a while or in some package. Moreover, I wish restaurants would be more consistent as the noodles weren't round but like a rectangle if looking at it from the top. While this may sound trivial the shape of food makes a different in flavor. For instance, elbow macaroni doesn't taste like spaghetti even though they're the same ingredients. That's because it hits the taste buds differently and tricks our minds into thinking it's a flavor rather than texture. Finally, and I noticed this off the bat, is great Chinese restaurants have a slight smoky flavor to Lo Mein and fried rice among some other dishes. This is subtle yet can really elevate the dish and it comes from a wok that's been seasoned for years. I know I'm nitpicking here but these things really make a difference. The chicken Mei Fun is a simple dish yet very affective. Plenty of green onion, bok-choy, onion & eggs along with thin rice noodles and plenty of meat. The flavor is on point with what I'm accustom to having however I do like carrots in mine. Overall, not bad. Overall, First China isn't inspiring yet not the worst I've had. My family thought it was ok, but when splurging on carbs I want a delicious endeavor as I don't gorge too often. Also, I wish they'd add a Beef Chow Fun to the menu as I have to go to Matthews to get it. The people are nice but it's a very quick interaction so I guess that's good. In summary I'd say it's mid.

That's a problem if the cook can't identify peanuts and cashews. This time I ordered the Twice Cooked Pork and received thick planks of overcooked pork. Traditionally this dish is made with a spicy red bean paste. Maybe the cook was confused and was attempting to season and cook it like Pernil because this one was made with red food colouring and cayenne. The flavours and cooking taste like someone has poorly cooked Latino food all their life or are attempting to destroy what was once a good Chinese takeaway. Will need to find a takeout now where people respect the cuisine they are cooking. 糟糕的食物 (zāogāo de shíwù)

This last time I got it the sauce was ok but the dumplings were just not the same. Bummer. Of course prices have gone up, so paying more for a lesser taste experience is not a win in my book. I also ordered my fave moo shoo chicken- which came with the 'pancakes' but no duk sauce. This is a big oversight for this dish. And also no rice. Service was quick & friendly -ambiance, well, I ran in & out. I also missed the days when this place gave you a free 3-liter when you spent a certain amount...new management, perhaps? I'd still give them another try tho- we go back a ways....

With me describing the taste, texture, presentation, it does not do it any justice. Need to go and taste it for yourself, you will thank me later. We got there and there were no tables available yet so we sat at the bar and when one was available we got moved over and then our wonderful dinner experience began. We've been here before many times, but this is the first time I remember to do a review. Just look at the pictures below and you will see what I got to experience. Each time we dined in, the experience was excellent and food were great.

The soup was good, but warm (not hot). After that, the experience went straight downhill. Firstly, the chicken was saturated with a honey-sugar glaze that was thick and slimy. It made the chicken uneatable. The broccoli was cold, as if chilled in the refridgerator before being served. Nobody like broccoli cold as ice. Lastly, we had ordered the fried rice. It was nothing like other photos from past reviews. It looked like plain white rice with a fried egg mixed in. It was bland and tasteless. Service was impersonal and lacked any eye contact. In fact, when the server was handing me the bill, she was literally looking across the room while aimlessly reaching out her arm with the bill. The food is sub-standard and is not like it once was. Needless to say, we will not go back.
