I was looking for a shotgun, for personal defense. The staff asked me about my familiarity, military. I was interested in a pump action, when I saw this beautiful and serious Beretta A300, tactical. The salesmen were informative, affable. This was my first purchase in decades. Along with my gun buy, I bought shells and a was provided passes to their firing range. It was suggested I bring my A300, at a time they provided, for firing; I did and what an awesome buy. I'm totally satisfied. I used my passes, even visited with friends who never fired a weapon and the FL folks were warm and patient, spending time at the range with them. Very satisfying experience. I've always wanted to go to firing range but I missed my chance to do so while living in NY, so I was esp glad to find this place and to see that there is no membership or all that jazz. If you are novice shooter like moi, I'd recommend you call and schedule a session with an instructor who will show you the ropes. I didn't know I had to do this but I went at a time that twas busy and they were very nice and accommodating..and patient. You pay a fee for the gun, a fee for the bullets and I think a fee just for using the range. Either way it's not the expensive at the end of the day. I went with my girlfriend and as expected we were the only two females there. As a woman, i wouldn't go alone cause it's just a musty place. read more

Love these guys. I got kicked out of Philadelphia archery and gun range trying to purchase a weapon and membership. I was feeling pretty sad and my friend found this place on line. I walked in bought my venessa and a years membership. They gave me two free boxes and let my friend shot free that day. Service with a smile, and various types of ammunition! Was here with a shooting club for my first ever experience at a firing range. The staff was very professional, personable, and extremely helpful for someone like me who only knows about guns from movies and Counter Strike - that is to say, the person you least want holding a gun anywhere near you. They threw in a quick helpful class instructing us on how to check, load, hold, aim, and fire the assortment of pistols they provided us. They set out 5 guns for our group of 11, one per lane, and had us rotating through them to get some experience on each. They even put out an extra .22 with a laser sight to help us novices get a more concrete feel for the barrel sights. In size order, I shot a .22 semi, a 9mm semi, a .38 revolver, a .40 semi, and a .45 semi. I'm happy to say that I can hit any man sized stationary target from 25 ft with 100 percent of what I have loaded. I was told it wasn't bad for someone completely new. I guess Counter Strike was good for something. The whole thing came down to about 15 bucks for equipment rental, and 20 bucks for ammo for each of us. We all shot 60-80 rounds, so it was a good 'ole time. Pro-tip: Call ahead and ask about a class! Otherwise, you're free to just come down and take an open lane. read more

This place is horrible. The place gets supper cold inside during the winter and it is also not well kept. Rapid fire is not allowed. The mechanism to move the target back and forth is supper flimsy, not stable at all, the target keeps moving side to side and wobbling for more than a minute after you select the distance. The staff is always nervous thinking you can't shoot a gun and to top it off the staff is also super rude, they pay more attention to phone calls than they do to you. The staff don't care how many people are in line waiting to be served, they just keep talking on the phone, sooo disrespectful. read more

Referred to this place a few years ago by a friend who lives nearby and had shot at the range & bought a pistol from them. At first impression, the place felt like home to me. Then again, I grew up hanging out at my dad's buddy's old garage. It's definitely a man's man's shooting range & gun shop. If you're looking for frills and corporate-molded plastic smiles, this place might not be for you. But if you want to handle, purchase, or just try out a firearm at the range (they do rentals for $15), you can't beat the convenience. It's $15 to shoot & you can get a box of 50 rounds of 9mm for under $20. Parking is never an issue as they have their own parking lot. One review I saw mentioned they treat their phone calls more importantly than their customers. I wonder if that person realizes they do background checks by phone? The store carries way more handguns than most others I've been to, and are competitively priced. They also have plenty of your more standard accessories, a handful of tactical flashlights, and a decent selection of Benchmade knives. The range is, well... it's dated for sure. The switches for moving the targets were recently updated, but the target mounts are kind of ghetto--not really a big deal though. It all works just as intended. If you're in the area and looking for somewhere to shoot, or buy a new or used firearm (or trade-in), or pick up some ammo, then give this place a "shot." They also offer a membership for $100/year that gives you unlimited access to the range, as well as getting rid of that $15 fee on rentals. read more

Great atmosphere in this little shop. Very local, and it's a small business. The staff that run this business are very friendly, knowledgeable, and experienced in what they are doing. They are also tentative to the customers, and treat everyone with respect. The prices are decent compared to other gun shops around this area. The guns are decently priced as well, they have a good selection of firearms, and the selection of pistols is stunning for such a small shop! The instructor is very nice as well, as I went for the first time shooting here. They also have a ton of ammo and gun accessories. Don't listen to these reviews, this business is great. I purchased a pistol from an individual off an online gun auction site. He made the mistake of taking it to these people (for use of a better word). Not only did they charge him out the wazoo, they shipped it to the wrong address and refused to pay for the "adult signature required". Per UPS website on the shipment of firearms: "The shipper must use Delivery Confirmation Adult Signature Required service for each package containing a firearm, including a handgun or a firearm suppressor, and affix a UPS label requesting an adult signature upon delivery." I called them while waiting on my gun and asked them if there wasn't a law to require an adult signature on the package & the guy (for use of a better word) was rude and said "no there isn't". I hope these guys gets their license pulled. read more

No matter what your stance on guns is, you should know how to fire one. If you are ever involved in a hostage scenario, zombie apocalypse, or Black Friday raid on Wal-Mart, your knowledge of firearms can mean the difference between life or death(or losing a deal on that sweet Blu-Ray player). Even if you don't own a gun, knowing how to fire one that was dropped by an action hero during his final struggle with a villain is really, really important. You know how it goes - They fight. One gun is sent flying across the room. They wrestle over the remaining gun. The villain gets the gun and points it at our hero. A gunshot is heard. The villain, looking confused, reaches down to his abdomen and brings up a hand covered in blood. The shot was not fired by the villain. The shot was fired by you...just in time...to save the world. Now imagine what would've happened if you had no idea how to fire a gun? I like The Firing Line for a few reasons: 1. Free Parking. 2. It is never very crowded. There are other, slicker shooting ranges that are packed and you have to wait for a spot and it sucks. The Firing Line is in an area with very low foot traffic so they never seem extremely crowded. 3. Personality. This place has grit. It isn't the cleanest range in the world but the workers are a beautiful mix of helpful and sarcastic. They are really, REALLY helpful if you admit right away that you've never fired before. They are cool. Some things to note: 1. Do not expect this to be cheap. I took 3 other people here and showed them how to fire a .22 and .45. It ran a little over a hundred bucks for all of us. It is like 15 dollars per person just to go in the range with ear/eye protection and then you buy all the ammo from them plus the cost of renting the individual guns. 2. It can get cold in here. Dress warmly. 3. The target hop system is hilariously barebones but I like it. It adds to the feel of the establishment. 4. My experiences here only come from firing pistols. I am not a gun expert by any means. So if you've ever wanted to know how it feels to totally kill a piece of paper with a target design, this is a good place to go for it. read more

I've been to Philadelphia Archery & Gun and I've been to the Firing Line - plus another one outside of the city...The Firing Line sort of falls in the middle, but barely. To be frank, the Firing Line is poorly lit and pretty messy. After parking in their lot off Front Street, you head upstairs to a dusty and crowded store with tons of random boxes sitting around. I've been here three times over the course of two years and these boxes do not ever seem to more or get opened (the dust just gets thicker). I am very curious what is inside of them. Anyway...there is usually two generally pleasant guys there who will help you with whatever you need. I never rented a weapon from them but I believe you can. I wouldn't recommend buying any firearms from here - just like every place in Philadelphia, it's overpriced. The shooting range: The target hops are light switches connected to some gerry-rigged system that involves...clothes hangers, I believe? It's the cheapest system I've ever seen, although it certainly works. There are leaks in the ceiling and people rarely sweep up their brass after they shoot - so watch your step! It can also get cold in the winter, so dress accordingly. They make you buy their ammo to shoot here...it's overpriced but not as badly as other places. Overall, if you're looking for a safe, clean, modern range - particularly for your first experience shooting a gun...go elsewhere (Philadelphia Archery & Gun would probably be best). If you're an experienced shooter who is willing to deal with a few trivial issues to save a few bucks - this place is alright. i have a list of things that i feel every person should learn how to do in case you're ever in a situation where you would need to use these skills: 1. learn basic first aid/cpr 2. learn to drive stick 3. learn to ride a motorcycle 4. learn how to fire a handgun 5. learn how to fly a plane i checked off the first three things early on in my life, but i've been trying for years now to get into a shooting range. for some reason, each attempt ends in failure one way or another. enter the firing line. a place that doesn't require you to sign up for an expensive lesson if it's your first time or reject you if you don't have an experienced shooter in your party. we were able to get an informal lesson from john and it was SUPER helpful. and free. yay! we also learned that it's extremely easy to buy a handgun. kinda scary. explains a lot about how things are. i am most definitely a fan. it's not the most fancy shmancy place you've ever stepped foot in. the targeting system is rickety and makeshift. it's kinda messy and unavoidably dirty due to gsr flying everywhere. but it's cheap and it serves its purpose. it gets really packed in the afternoon, so come early and you'll have most of the range to yourself. as for #5 on my list... eh, i'll get to it someday. read more

I go here every so often because its cheap enough, the staff are friendly enough and they have off street parking. In a city that isn't so gun friendly this place is a real oasis; I can put a box of 9mm downrange for under $50, which really ain't bad. I would be amiss, however, if I did not bring to light some points of criticism. First off, the target system is utter crap. Depending on the lane you get you'll either find yourself overshooting your mark by 10ft+ because the target hauls ass downrage at lightning speed, or you end up needing to unjam the machanism everytime you want to send your target downrange. While this is tolerable and would likely be a pricy fix, what puts it over the edge for me is the complete lack of distance markers on the range. I have no clue what distance i'm shooting at at this range, which makes it hard to properly sight in. 20 minutes of work with a tape measure, a can of paint and some number stencils would fix this... which makes it that much more annoying. The other point of criticism I have to make is a bit more serious. The employees claim that ammo sold for range use is frangible, which it absolutely isn't (dispite this places inflated ammo prices). Winchester white box, 9mm FMJ is not frangible. In fact I ended up taking home a few mangled 9mm bullets that ended up on the ground right in front of my lane last time I was in there. I have to wonder if there has ever been a ricochet injury at this range. I tend to finish up quick when I see someone pull out an AR at this place for fear of what sort of ammo they're shooting. For this reason I tend to go to this range early in the day on weekdays, when i'm usually the only shooter on the range, and I never bring anything more powerful than a 9mm. read more

I've been shooting here now a few times and seriously, the folks who work there and hang out there are awesome. Just really nice, laid back people. Always joking around. I went for a shoot with my 40cal and 12 gauge. Just to let you know, they aren't too keen on you shooting a 12 gauge if the range is full. I understand that, just want to put it out there. Again, more expensive than I thought when I bought my ammo there. For range time, 3 boxes for 40cal and 2 (5ct) boxes of 12 gauge shells set me back $92. Someone on here said "The target system is old school as well: swiss cheese cardboard backing, slack wire hangers for support, and no indication of target distance". Thats very true. Its very dated. Sometimes it doesnt work and you have to play with the wire to get it to work. I was next to a couple who was getting a quick lesson on how to shoot. I believe it was the range master talking to them. He was really laid back but serious at the same time. Nice to see they help out newbies. read more

Been buying and shooting here since 2003. It's close and has a small parking lot. Which speaks volumes for being in South Philly. Yes the range is kinda raggitty and cold. But it works(for the most part). This is a LE(Law Enforcement) dealer. So their selection of pistols, shotguns and rifles are all the Usual Suspects. Beretta, Smith and Wesson, Glock, Heckler and Koch, Remington, Mossberg, etc. This outing I spotted some 1911's and pocket size concealment guns. On display for rifles, there were S&W M&P AR15's. They even stock a few carry flashlights and Benchmade knives. Excellent. The gentlemen working here are top notch and will take care of your shooting needs. I went in tonight to get firearm training, purchase a gun, and schedule reoccurring target practice. Big Mistake. The two gentlemen working this evening treated me so poorly and spoke to me as if I was an uneducated simple minded woman. Unfortunately, what I thought would be an easy breezy transaction turned out to be a nightmare. I would not recommend this store for women shopping alone and looking to purchase a firearm for self defense. Yes, ladies this is an "Old Boys" club and clearly my business was unwanted. So I left empty handed and a little upset but I took my business to Philadelphia Training Academy over on Ellsworth and had a much better experience.
