In Thorns Marketplace in Northampton, MA you I'll come across some delightful chocolates and truffles. I wasn't sure if my mind was playing games on me, but on my last trip to Northampton this chocolate stand was called Heavenly Chocolate, and now they're called Firetype Chocolate. They simply decided to go for a new name. They're just a small stand located across from Share Northampton. The chocolate variety they offer is anything but small. One little truffle will set you back almost $3.00. As far as I could tell everything is sold individually, not by weight. I got some of the chocolate that sounded a bit interesting, also the barks are a bit larger than the truffles. I got the Salted Almond Bark, Maple Honeycomb and another one that's very similar. These are such quality chocolates. The honeycomb is a bit sticky, and you might need to floss your teeth right after. They also have a small selection of gummy candy. I got the pear, these are soft and juicy. These are unique, flavorful chocolates, that any chocolate lover is sure to appreciate. Firetype Chocolates are made by hand right here in Northampton. I bought these chocolates for my wife for Mother's Day. She said they were the best that she's ever had and requested a box for each holiday going forward. The clerk was also super nice and patient and also hand wrote a "map" to the chocolates so my wife would know what each one was. Very helpful. read more

I have passed this place countless times over the years and finally stopped to get a small box of goodies yesterday. SO glad that I did! This is some seriously high quality chocolate. Highlight? Mango habanero dark chocolate truffle. This was a simply perfect concoction as far as flavor experiences go. The mango was an immediately obvious flavor and then the dark, luscious chocolate notes came through. The habanero burn didn't happen right away - nor was it ever overwhelming. But it slowly sneaks up on you and gives a perfect tongue-tingle burn to cap off the mango-chocolate awesomeness. Seriously - this is a perfect piece of chocolate. I sampled several other pieces and they were delightful....but I'd go out of my way for those mango habanero chocolates. Perfection. read more

Any place that has a whole case of vegan chocolate is aces in my book. My daughter, after being a vegetarian for years, recently went to the dark side ... I mean became a vegan. So, finding stuff for her is hard but finding treats for her is even harder. I got her the dark chocolate ganache and the coconut cream marzipan covered in dark chocolate. "Heavenly" isn't nearly a strong enough adjective to describe the chocolates at Heavenly Chocolate. I'm not even sure if one exists in the English language. One bite of a pumpkin peanut butter puck and my life was forever changed. After that fateful first visit, I was compelled to make a daily purchase for the remainder of my time in Northampton. That unassuming little kiosk and its delectable bonbons had me hooked. They are all to-die for, however, lavender sea salt caramel, ghost chili, cinnamon roll, and pumpkin muffin each warrant a mention. And, of course, the one that started it all, the divine pumpkin peanut butter puck. At $2.50 to $3 a pop, I'd normally dock a star for that price tag, but I can't even fault them. What? There are only 5 stars? If possible, I would give Heavenly Chocolates 10. What? It goes to eleven? Then I will give Heavenly Chocolates eleven. I have been buying and eating Cornucopia's Heavenly Chocolates for several years now. They carry an abundance of sold-by-the piece chocolates as well as more types of bar chocolate than I could possibly wrap my mouth around in a year. Other stuff, too. Beautiful pastilles and candies. So many chocolates that would be appropriate gifts for any occasion. They have local, they have international; they have simple, they have complex; they have chocolate from Belgium, France, Massachusetts, Connecticut; and of course, many different South American countries of origin. There is vegan, there is fair-trade. This should be your go-to place for chocolates, not only in the Valley, but in the world. One of the first chocolates I tried was Heavenly Chocolate's own habanero dried-mango. Since that first melt-in-my-mouth bite years ago to any day I still walk up to the counter to buy another, these have never lost their complex appeal. Another favorite of mine is Heavenly Chocolate's "Peanut Butter Sizzle." If the name isn't enough to tempt you, know that it comes in the charming shape of a playing card. I am not a huge fan of peanuts or peanut butter, but, oh....this ranks with peanuts in a finely prepared Thai dish. It is sublime, supreme, delicious. Two of my other favorites are the Knipschildt black currant heart, perhaps the sexiest and most romantic chocolate I've ever held between tongue and tooth, and the Michel Cluizel coffee cup. As you can guess, I have only sampled a small portion of the offerings. I once bought 25 different kinds of chocolate bars for someone's 60th Birthday here. I forget the name of the company, but one bar had absinthe in it and the package is so pretty. My family also got hooked on the 65% Santander bar after trying it here. I love the hint of vanilla--another taste sensation that is hard to beat. In case you are wondering, I have found that the prices match or beat anyone's in the Valley. Do it. Go in. See them. Inhale. Ask. Touch. Buy. Beautiful and delicious chocolates for a troubled world. UPDATE: Heavenly Chocolates stopped carrying the Knipschildt black currant hearts. You know why? Because they started to make their own black currant chocolates. YES I know you can't believe it, but they are AWESOME and they are made with LOCAL Massachusetts black currant syrup. From Western Mass, yeah, I'm not kidding. And they are better than the Knipschildt. So there. I have had quite a bit of correspondence with the Bud Stockwell, the owner, over the new black currant chocolates. I can't say enough good about the way this business is run. Bud is responsive, interested in what consumers want, took my input to heart, loves his chocolates, is conscientious. The staff who emailed me in regards to these chocolates was equally attentive. SO GOOD! I have Loved chocolate since I came out of the womb. I call myself a chocolate snob, the name describes exactly what you get, Heaven in a box. I Love the assortment, and how different and original each one is, so much flavor and depth to every bite. Literally Heaven, no other store bought chocolate can even compare, I would definitely have giving it (5stars)but my only complaint would be- I get their chocolate a lot as a gift and sometimes it leaves me guessing what flavor I'm eating, since you don't know exactly what your eating if you don't physically pick them out for yourself. I am not picking on the unenthusiastic girl working at the counter, but I think that it is appropriate to crack a smile or a gage with a customer when charging $34.99 per lb for chocolates. Pleasantly surprised to learn that the Heavenly Chocolate stand inside Thorne's Marketplace, offers a good selection of vegan chocolates. The cashier informed us that the Gold Dusted Chocolate Caramel that I chose, tasted like apple pie. She was right! In total, I paid $4.61 for four chocolates. (I read reviews on Yelp all the time, but this is the first one I've written. That's how much I love these.) Ever since I was sent Heavenly Chocolate as a gift, it's been my favorite chocolatier. They also sell chocolates from a few other makers. I just returned from a trip to three cities in Belgium, and I made sure to try different brands of chocolate in each city. Some of these are very highly regarded; rated "best of" for 2013, etc. (including Dumon, which is also a Rick Steves favorite). I was so darn proud of Heavenly Chocolate when I realized that theirs are not only as good as any Belgian chocolate I had, but in most cases they're better! And I'm really tuned in to mouth-feel and texture, as well as flavor. Hard to pick favorite flavors, but...try Egyptian Jewel, Cinnamon Spice, Raspberry Cordial, Mango Habanero, Peanut Butter Sizzle, and Le Razzmatazz! This is absolutely terrible, it's reviewed amazingly and yet when you eat it, it tastes like cardboard. I don't know whether the people reviewing it haven't had chocolate ever or are just lying but this is nothing like chocolate. Whatever you do don't buy this disgrace of a chocolate bar. read more

These people know so much about chocolate and pairings and palates and all that good stuff. Wow. I love coming here when I'm getting a special gift and always get a little truffle for myself :) I can't resist. They have all the rare special chocolates you can imagine and haven't imagined and they're super helpful and friendly and it's really reasonably priced for the quality.
