Great food and prompt service! We had a working lunch today for my wife since it's Mother's Day Weekend. She wanted us out in the yards planting and gardening. She wanted Firehouse so that's what we went with: Cajun Chicken Sandwich, Meatball Sub, Engineer, Steak and Cheese Melt, and Honey Ham. Everyone wanted chips as well: Salt & Vinegar, BBQ (x2), and Jalapeño. Everyone also wanted a pickle spear, so they got those. We had a cooler full of beer, water, and other stuff, so we were good on drinks. Mom was good with everything, and so were we. As the saying goes, "If Momma ain't happy, Nobody's happy." Firehouse insured that we didn't have to live through that situation! Good job, guys! read more

Mobile App doesn't work. Phone system isn't working. Order a sandwich inside and don't discover until I'm home that they've given me the wrong order. Three strikes. read more

Food is ok... I'll get it again for lunch or something. Staff is patient. Place is clean.

Though they do not seem like much on the outside, and I admit I was not convinced of their sandwich making potential (my ex wife was superior) I will say their food is quite excellent and delicious. The hook and ladder especially gave me a feeling of fullness I have not felt since my ex wife's dog finally died. Good riddance pooky read more

Service always seems a little slow, but their sandwiches are great. Cold turkey sub or hot chick bacon ranch (turned into salad) are my faves! read more

This firehouse should be burned down. Ordered half hour. B4 closing, via door dash. Could not identify one slice of meat on the sandwich. Looks like they used all the pieces and shaving from the bottom of the meat slicer. Forgot the cheese on the sandwich. The food gave me a case of Diarra..t read more

I loved the quality put in to my sandwich especially the melted cheese and a pickle on the side. Something I really liked was how they all said welcome to firehouse when someone walked in. They did a very nice job. read more

Firehouse Subs - Hook and ladder sandwich - Sandwiches Near Me - Portage, Indiana

We ordered using the app and picked up our subs. Got home the order was wrong. Call the store back and they told me to come back in. Got there and waited for the subs. Got them and they were right. I like Firehouse Subs but upset that they messed up and did not offer reward points or chips for them messing up and making me drive back. We have been back several times since this review and had good experiences. read more

I had heard about Firehouse Subs as one of those new franchises that is getting a lot of recognition. So we (my family) went down through an invitation from the owners of the one in Portage to come and try it. We absolutely loved it and I don't think I'll be going back to Subway again. My wife and I had the Hawaiian King pulled pork and slaw sandwich. The bread of course was great but to pair it with pulled pork and slaw was outstanding! My son had the steak and cheese sandwich and he loved it as well. Great bread and lots of steak and cheese in the middle. All that to say we'll be heading back again. Who knows? Maybe we'll go to the IMAX theater there (what is an IMAX theater doing in Portage?) and then stop over for a great dinner. You know though that these subs, while much better than the average fast food sub, are a bit more expensive. But considering the quality and atmosphere, in my book it's totally worth it! read more

The subs are good I still have other favorite sub restaurants but this one is good for a quick pit stop and eat fast

I felt like there wasn't anything there that I couldn't just make at home. It wasn't horrid, but it really wasn't good either. In short, don't waste your time or money. read more

I have to say, I was highly disappointed in this place. Especially after seeing the overall 4 star review that it received. Don't get me wrong, the place isn't horrible. I'd actually would give it 2-1/2 stars if possible. It's just that there's nothing unique about the preparation of their sandwiches. For example, Pot Belly's toast's their subs, Jimmy Johns has delicious bread, but Firehouse Subs are just plain and kind of bland tasting. I had the beef&cheddar brisket and the NY steamer and even though both sounded delicious, neither ones taste matched their description. I totally agree with the other Yelper(Shawn R.) that I would rather go to Subway,Jimmy Johns, or Pot Belly's than this place. Definitely just a mediocre sandwich. I love tuna,so I might give them one more try for their tuna sub. read more

I was craving a veggie on wheat, fully engulfed, and wasn't disappointed. Five stars for enthusiastic employees and excellent food.

Pretty good for a sandwich shop. I really appreciate the fact that they accommodate my requests for no bread staff is always super nice. This is our go to restaurant when we need something fast read more

Things is, they f**ked up my sandwich...and it was still delicious! But when I say no onion and no mayo, it's not a suggestion, I actually mean no onion and no mayo! read more

Step aside Subway and JimmyJohns you have a new major competitor in town Great sandwiches and friendly, helpful staff!!! Handled a large group of 14 with ease. Called early and were advised to have the order written down so they could maximize efficiency in getting food to everybody. Worked out great and allowed everybody to eat at the same time. It's a fun time seeing which friend can have the hottest hot sauce. I forget the names but "9" really stuck with you 30 minutes later still hoping for a glass of milk but "10" was a good hit and then went away. read more

Best BBQ subs and regular subs around. Beats all other competitors hands down. Staff if very friendly, atmosphere is warm and inviting. I normally get the Smokehouse brisket with extra bbq sauce. Always look forward to eating here. read more

My first time here. Outstanding Club on a Sub. Friendly staff. I will be back when in town.

NEVER had a bad experience at the Portage, In location. The sandwiches are phenomenal! I love that the bread is soft and moderately chewy! Unlike the other well-known sub sammy shops, Firehouse's bread does not have that chewy, sponge leather texture. Add to the bread various combinations of luscious traditional deli cuts and condiments and you'll soon be craving these sammiches after your first bite. My favorite is the New York Steamer. Yum. Just yum. read more

The subs taste great, but they are a little small and kind of pricey for what you get. A lot of people love this place, I don't really see why. read more

The sandwiches are steamed, and bread is perfectly toasted, so it takes a bit longer, but it is worth it! They are doing pretty good for just opening. Not perfect but after some time they will have it down! read more

These are some of the best tasting subs that I have had! I had the cheddar brisket and the meat was tender and flavorful with a good mix of the barbecue and cheese. We loved the decor which is a great draw for anyone who has kids that love firefighters and the coke 120 machine had them fascinated! Definitely worth checking out. It does cost more than some sub places, but the subs are way more meaty and tasty! read more

Okay so first off I am no newbie when it comes to Firehouse Subs. I moved here a few years ago from down south where the chain was a bit more prominent. I would stop by the one up north of Chicago when I was up that way and was so excited when they put one in on the main road in Merrillville. Boy I was excited when one came to Portage. I'm glad to see the chain is expanding as it is my personal opinion that that chain is far superior to other sandwich chains. Both me and my girlfriend have become pretty big fans of the sandwiches here in the last year. I started with the steak and cheese and would substitute that for the Brisket sandwich. Last week I walked in prepared to make the hard choice between the two when I stumbled upon a carefully placed piece of Firehouse marketing advertising the new Sweet Thai Chili Pork Sandwich. (Well played Firehouse...). I decided to give it a try as I like pulled pork and man it was great. Give this place a try if you're looking for something new. The staff is always friendly, restaurant is pretty clean and the food is great. read more

Decided to check this place out today around lunch time. The sandwich that I ordered (brisket) was great and I would get it again in a second. The only thing that bothered me about my visit was the table that I was at could have been a little cleaner . I do like the idea behind the soda machine there and it does seem to be a hit with a lot of people there unfortunately I don't really drink soda and I had to wait in line for ice while the six kids played with the machine because there parents where to busy talking. When I finally got ice it seemed to have trouble making it. Anyways I would recommend this place I would go back its better than the other two sub places in Portage. read more

Great place to stop for a tasty sandwich! Loved the Hook and Ladder! Decor was synonymous with the name of the restaurant!

Good sandwiches I think the Italian is the best followed by the brisket. I don't digest trying to take them to work, they tend to get rather soggy after about 30 minutes. read more

Long wait during peak hours, the restaurant has been grimy and dirty both visits I've had, disorganized staff, broken coke machine. One redeemer is that the staff was friendly. Good location and the food is generally good. read more

I love this place I am having the briscet its outstanding the service is great and personally I love the 100+ pop machine

I've heard a lot about this place but don't have any around were I live. It was really great and friendly staff. Had the beef brisket and cheddar. I loved it. I want to try the meatball sub next time. I'm tempted to go back before they close tonight. read more

Ordered the number 2 (NY steamer). Tasted good. Very skimpy on the meat, and couldn't taste the pastrami. Payed 8.43 for a combo, not even worth it. read more

I must say I really enjoyed my experience at the one in Valpo and the one in Portage both I highly recommend the customer service is stellar my husband and I do not go out to eat very much anymore due to the fact of customer service being very poor but I must say I was very impressed when I walked into both stores and got a welcome their sandwiches were made very very well you could tell that they really put a lot of pride in their work I must say I will definitely be back that is now my very favorite sandwich shop all the sandwiches are good everyone of them that I've had so far and I've tried most of them My favorite however is the turkey bacon ranch my husbands is the New York steamer read more
