Disappointed is the word that best describes Schoop's Hamburgers. It has a really fun and cool atmosphere inside and outside. Its simple menu means that they should be good at what they do. I ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich and my husband ordered the special hamburger. The food that we were served was very bland and unserseasoned. The malt that I ordered was good but WAY overpriced at $6.90. I left very underwhelmed and will not return to Schoop's Hamburgers! read more

Great food and great service at a great price! My Clan (4 kids) all ordered Bacon Double Cheeseburgers with fries. The Grandbaby got a Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Fries. The Wife got a Bacon Double Cheeseburger with Texas Fries while I got a loaded Pork Tenderloin with Irish Fries. Everyone was satisfied with their meal. Schoop's is in our rotation of Friday night eateries and will continue to one of our favorites! read more

I am sick of the small things they mess up here. I verified my order with the lady over the phone after placing my order. So for my Texas nachos to not have the bacon I ordered is silly and air headed, I shouldn't have to worry about something being messed up when I order then verify the order is correct. That's someone not doing their job correctly. Yeah it seems stupid for me to come here and leave a review about missing bacon on fries but this is the third time in two months they've messed something up. I'll just go back to big time burgers, they're better tasting anyways, and have yet to mess up an order. Especially after verifying back to me that what I ordered is correct. read more

Been going to schoops my whole life. Very consistent, outstanding burgers, hearty and delicious chili, yummy soups, and speedy service. My fave is the Mickey and a cup of chili deluxe! read more

Schoop's Hamburgers - Mickey - Burgers Near Me - Portage, Indiana

We ate here for lunch after reading that the burgers here were the best in Indiana. The burgers lived up to the hype and the service we received was top notch. We asked the young lady at the counter to cut our 2 burgers in half so we could share. She not only had the burgers cut in half, but she also put 1/2 of each burger in each of our to go containers so we would not have to split them up later. We will definitely come back here again if we ever find ourselves in the area. read more

Schoop's Hamburgers - 1/2 cheeseburger, 1/2 3 alarm burger - Burgers Near Me - Portage, Indiana

Such an amazing diner! My boyfriend said it was a NW Indiana staple so I had to try it and it did not disappoint. The decor was so cute and the server was very nice. I tried the Green River drink which is apparently pretty popular here and had a delicious bacon cheeseburger! I can't wait to come back next time i'm in the area. read more

Schoop's is a local diner. The breakfast was good at great prices. Kathi our waitress was magnificent.

A bit pricy for the food but... We keep going back. It is basic comfort food and we are always served quick and hot. Unless you want ice cream. That cold! read more

Decent food, the onions were fresh and the pickles had some snap to them. Fries were ok, nothing to rave about. I'll say my coke was flat and had no fuzz to it. The restroom is small and wasn't as clean as you'd expect. Waitress was nice and attentive. Personally I don't see myself going back. read more

Old school type burgers, looks like they are hand formed, and smashed on the grill, just the way I like em. The cheeseburger I ordered was cooked just right, and the fries are great, with great service, this little local chain that are primarily in Illinois, and Indiana, S's H is on my road trip list of burger stops. read more

I have been here for lunch and breakfast. Service is very friendly, and they have a ton of regulars. The food is pretty average. It's a standard breakfast and diner-style smash burgers. Some people love this place! I will go if others are interested, but that's about it. read more

Charged $2.30 for a cup of coffee - c'mon, are you kidding me? The burger was ok but hardly worth 9 bucks and the fries tasted like the oil needed to be changed. Far too expensive for the mediocre food that they serve. read more

Loved them for years- unique hamburger! I have only had the burgers. Others have expressed that the fries are mediocre at best- soggy? I don't eat the fries, but the hamburgers are heavenly! read more

I've been working in the region for a few months and finally made it to Schoop's. Of course I had to order the Mickey Burger and upgraded my fries to onion rings. Great burger and great old school atmosphere. read more

The service here is the best I would recommend it to anyone that drives by this Schoops

I totally love this Schoops because I love the classic diner car feel of it. You can't find that anywhere else around here. Plus their burgers are probably one of the best too. Great prices as always. read more

I stopped here during a recent road trip and really enjoyed their breakfast. I had the Biscuits and Gravy with eggs and a pancake with coffee. The B&G comes with a creamy white sausage gravy and the 3ggs I ordered were cooked a perfect over easy. The decor was that of an old stainless coated diner which I might add looked amazing. The stools at the counter were full during the lunch rush, so the locals seem to love this place! The waitress kept my cup full the whole time we were at the table (awesomeness) read more

Good food. Never have a complaint. Always enjoy supporting a local business. Love the workers always polite.

Great burgers and tons of fries. I will be back. Plus, your shakes are always fantastic.

This is such a cute little diner! The atmosphere is fun and the food is cheap! I will say the food could have had a little more flavor but for a cheap, fast, and easy diner, I enjoyed myself!! read more

My husband and I have been coming here for years, and we've always had great service and a great experience. Lyndsey has always taken great care of us--we've always been her "regulars"!! We haven't been in quite some time though because of our newest addition--we're not huge fans of taking our 1-year-old because he's quite the messy eater. This trip we took our friends from out of town and our 1-year-old with us. It's a cool environment with retro decor. The food is classic American, and so good!! I had the Mickey, a chocolate shake, and Irish Nachos--it was delicious! Definitely a great place for comfort food!! Our waitress, Kaley, was super sweet and incredibly helpful--this is first time I've ever had someone other than Lyndsey. As most 1-year-olds do, who are taken out to eat, he made quite a mess. We offered to sweep it up, she said that she'd take care of it--no worries!! Great place for the entire family! We loved Kaley, still love Lyndsey, and we'll obviously be back! Love this place! read more

This was my first time eating at Schoop's. The cheeseburger was delicious. The staff was friendly. I'm only in town a few more days, but I'm definitely going to go back. Way better than regular chain restaurant hamburgers. read more

Great burgers and absolutely the best breakfast in town. The biscuits and gravy are amazing!!!!! This is a regular stop for me and my family. A must stop for visitors!!! read more

This has become a weekly staple for our family. Great service, and consistently delicious food! Highly recommend the patty melt and of course, the Irish nachos. The sausage gravy and biscuits is out of this world and the fresh homemade soups are fantastic! Perfect place for the whole family to find something they like. read more

My mom always said I should not say anything if I had nothing nice to say so I will keep this brief. My omelet contained CANNED spinach. What restaurant does that?? Not in love and I would not come back. The outside is super cute- the silver metal building is shaped like an old-fashioned diner car! And I did think the signs for the mens' and womens' restrooms were funny! read more

One of the best hangover cures I've had in a long time! I thought this would be a typical greasy diner with tacky 1950's tchotchke, but I was pleasantly surprised. The choices for breakfast went in a direction I wasn't expecting...Irish hashbrowns and Green River milkshakes, for example. They played '80's music, which had me dancing in my booth in spite of my raging hangover. The only thing that would make this place better is a Bloody Mary. read more

Good place for burgers, especially if you like hand-formed, crispy-on-the-edges variety, like Steak 'n' Shake. I prefer this one to the one nearby in Valparaiso because the architecture is like an actual old-school diner, as opposed to a strip-mall storefront. The service is always prompt and attentive. My kids like the grilled cheese and burgers too, and they always get a milkshake. read more

The food here is really greasy and is seriously lacking in flavor. Also, the decor is very strange. I was eye-level with a picture of a baby covered in spaghetti and sauce. It was really distracting and kind of gross. I'm normally not picky about restaurant decor but having to stare at that picture for 45 minutes, I was forced to make an exception. I gave this place an extra star because they have a Green River shake on the menu. I ordered one and liked it. I would recommend taking a shake to go, but avoiding the food and the strange atmosphere. read more

Visited for the first time tonight and was not disappointed. We ordered two burgers and a kid's meal plus a shake for dessert to share. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the service was great even with it being pretty busy. The young blonde waitress was very sweet and took great care of us. No complaints at all. We will definitely be back. read more

Meh! It was ok . but for 30 bucks I could have had a awesome meal somewhere else . Shakes are always good . I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again . Tons of options out here . read more

This place is mediocre at best. The service is garbage, the food is overpriced, and the interior is shabby. At least it's mostly clean. My last meal there was Irish Nachos and a Chicago style hot dog. The fries in the Irish nachos were extremely soggy. The Chicago style was a DISGRACE. The bun was soggy, the hot dog was poor quality, the onions were dry, no sport peppers, no mustard, and the relish was all mushed on one half of the hot dog. Absolutely AWFUL. Their burgers are all right if you like them flavorless and greasy. My recommendation is to head elsewhere. You can get MUCH better for the price. read more

Schoops is a great place for an old-fashioned dinery hamburger. We'd never been to this one before, but it stands up to all of the other ones I've been too. The Portage one is in an old-fashioned dinery building, too, all silver and shiny. The burgers are huge. You might think you want a double cheeseburger, but start with a single. They're grilled to be a little crispy around the edges, nice and juicy in the middle, overlapping the edges of your bun. Share a basket of fries (we like the curly) with your eating partner. And enjoy a vanilla coke, red cream soda, or green river -- straight from the fountain. I love me some vanilla coke. If you're like me, you won't have any room left when you're done -- but they do have ice cream and other yummy desserts. (I find it funny, by the way, that this Schoop's was not previously listed on Yelp -- this one was a campaign stop for Obama with Evan Bayh back in '08.) read more

Came to Schoop's with a group of 8 after a long morning of paintballing. Diner style interior was refreshing compared to the many chains in the surrounding area. Wait staff was great - kept the refills flowing and were extremely prompt with all our needs. The food was fantastic. I got the schoops burger and a cup of chili. Both items I highly recommend. The patty melt and frisco looked great as well. Overall phenomenal experience and recommend anyone looking for a good burger stop by. 5 stars. read more

Great burger and fries. Would have scored higher but the service was miserably slow. We had to ask for someone to wait on us. Establishment was slow as it was a late lunch. Yes, I would go back read more

We just got hamburgers from there and my hamburger was severely burnt and never should have left the restaurant. Called the store and talk to the manger Kelsey who was very rude and unprofessional. She even put me on hold during the call to take another call and when she came back and I commented about being put on hold she stated the other customer was important. Will be calling the owner tomorrow and will take the hamburger back in so she could see for herself. Will never ever go to any Schoops ever again. The last time the hamburger was also burnt but not as bad as this time. The hamburger was also very very flat all the way through and Kelsey said this is how they make them. Been eating Schoops for over 20 years and no they're not that flat in the middle, only mostly around the edges. Thinking of calling the board of health, something so burnt can't be good for you. read more
