We added the pickle boat (6 pickle spears) and it was under $2! A great filling meal for a low price!

We went into the store at 8:28pm to get a quick meal. The host continued her cleaning and…read moreeventually made her way over to us. When we walked to the register, we received no greeting, no 'Hi', nothing except, what would you like? I placed my order, was informed the shake machine was closed, and was informed that the dining room was closed. Why? Store closes at 9pm, the store still has 30 minutes before it closed? Shake machine shouldn't have been closed and there was still plenty of time to eat and go. We had been doing volunteer work outside all day and wanted a cool place to sit. Ok, that is fine, we got the order to go and sat outside at the tables. We had 3 different orders (separate individuals), we all received cold, soggy fries. At 8:50, they shut the outside lights off on us, still 10 minutes before closing. I went inside to refill my drink at 8:52, they eventually turned the lights back on, apparently oblivious to the fact that we were sitting out there?? I took our trash in but all the trash baskets were without bags and I didn't want to throw the trash in the can with no bag, so I set it on the top of the trash cabinet. She swiped the bags off the trash cabinet like it was a major inconvenience to her and at 8:55 she locked the door. She was so worried about her cleaning and making sure she could walk out that door at 9pm. Stores are open until 9pm. She shouldn't be so worried about walking out the door at 9. Cleaning can be done while people are still in the store and after guest leave, it doesn't hurt to have to wipe off one extra table? Just very rude. What I will say is that the dining room was clean and the store was neatly kept but service was terrible and the attitude sucked! Not sure why younger employees don't understand what providing good customer services look like anymore (This doesn't apply to ALL younger people, but enough that is it an issue). Disappointed in the entire exchange.

It's been around 80 years and today, I was eager to find out why. The whole diner scene is very clean and consistent with how I would imagine it has always looked. The walls are covered in framed historical documents and photographs about the Mathias Sandwich Shop and old signs from the 1940's and 1950's that I imagine are truly original to the era it was hoppin' and bussin' at during that time. It has a very unique feel to it, like a place your grandmother and her family loved to go to growing up in this area. You can tell some of their customers here are patrons. It's a true "mom and pop" kinda place, which I love! Although we ordered a kids burger and a couple Reuben sandwiches, I felt the need to come back and try everything on their menu. It was a simple sandwich, burger, hot dog, salad kind of diner, but each category had many choices to choose from. The food was served warm and with a smile, which is always a nice touch. My son ate all of his kid's burger and fries and my other son ate all of his Reuben and chips. Both of them were very satisfied! My Reuben was also very good. The flavors were true to their mark and very good. The service we received was also great! Parking can be tricky in the front of the shop, so I might try parking behind the shop next time. So, if you're looking for a good well run deli to get some freshly cooked to order sandwiches or burgers or hot dogs for a good price, this is your place!
