This place is a gem! Had a baseball tourney in the area and came across this place for lunch in between games. First off, Stefan the owner, is seriously a ray of sunshine in human form. He is so sweet, charismatic and engaging with his customers. He chatted with us like we were old friends, asked our kids names all while chatting with his returning customers as they came in. They all raved about the food, coming from near, and after eating there, we know why. This place is nothing short of amazing! The food was delicious. We ordered a few meals including the hot dogs, fries + cheese sauce and broasted chicken sandwich. All were so good. Everything was eaten off our plates and only thing we returned to Stefan was his plates. LOL. I highly recommend this place. This mom and pop place is going to be my Go To burger spot. Even though they are known for their Broasted chicken (which I still need to try), my boyfriend was craving a wholesome burger, so I scoured Yelp and Google for a place. I found this one - which wasn't even listed on Yelp. It's a cash only spot that's been there for ages. The owners are a married couple who take your order, cook your food, and ring you up. It's a two person dream team. When you arrive, you tell the man what you'd like (chicken, hot dog, or burger) and he starts putting it together. If you order a burger, he puts out two buns and then has you tell him what you want on it (similar to subway/chipotle), so you know your order will be correct. When you order fries, the woman takes them out of the fridge and puts them in the oil. When they're done cooking, the man hold up the salt shaker and asks you whether you want any ( this is great for customers who can't have much salt). Then the woman rings you up. For two cheeseburger meals, with one cheese fry, and one regular fry (plus extra added for our dog), and two drinks the total was about $14. The cheeseburger 5/5 - cooked to order - fresh ingredients - perfect proportion of condiments : mustard, ketchup, and Mayo - the patty may be skinny, but it wasn't over cooked; there was even a little pink (I usually order rare to med rare, and believe me having any pink in a thin patty is nigh impossible). It was also a large diameter. My guess is it was 1/4 - 1/3lb of meat. - other toppings : lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles The cheese fries: 4+/5 - Crinkle cut - made to order - salted per your liking - the cheese sauce is actually like a really good nacho cheese. It's not spicy. It's warm. But I was expecting melted cheese, not a sauce, which is why I deducted a star. If I had known going into it that it was a cheese sauce, I still would have ordered it. And the cheese sauce is good, but I just wish I knew ahead of time that it was a sauce. The lemonade: 3.5/5 - this is not from a fountain, which I was stoked about - I'm not sure if this is homemade or not - It wasn't too sweet - it was good, and I would get it again. It wasn't the best lemonade I've had, but it was far better than most. I will definitely be back. I need to try their chicken, but whenever I'm having a burger craving, this will be where I go. Tip: fried chicken takes 15 mins to make no matter if you order 2 pieces or 50, so the owner recommends calling ahead. read more

The broasted chicken is so delicious, moist and crispy crunchy! The crinkle fries are super crispy and perfectly seasoned! I haven't tried anything else from here only the broasted chicken dinners and a rainbow cone. The coleslaw is ok I did get bad coleslaw once out of the many times I've gone but would still recommend. read more

I've been coming to this place for years, I've only had one other bad encounter besides today. Today I ordered 31 pieces of chicken, once I got home, I live 45 mins away, I noticed a piece of chicken with hair literally cooked into it. I tried to get the best picture I could, but the hair is literally wrapped around the drum of the wings, several strands of hair at that. I called immediately, the wife answered, immediately got offended, told me to come back today or she can't do anything for me then started yelling at me. The husband took over and told me since I only found hair on one wing, put it in a bag and bring it back whenever I'm back in the area, which is rare, and he'll give me a free 3piece wing. Are you kidding me?? I'm not going to drive 45 mins to bring a wing back to swap it out for 3 wings... it's really sad when you receive terrible service like this, the food is really good but from now on if I ever choose to revisit, I know to check all my food before leaving, which is quite pathetic when the owners & staff could wear hairnets to prevent things like this from happening! This little place is a gem. Great chicken and the rest of their menu is quite good too. A good family owned joint, nice and welcome change from the chain restaurants. Neighborhood gets a bit sketchy at night. And be prepared to wait for your chicken, it is made fresh. You can't go wrong with this place, but there is almost no room to sit down and eat, just a small counter and a few stools, as it is designed more for carry outs. Stephan is the owner, Bill is the son & Anita is the wife. They do a bang-up business selling their juicy broasted chicken, either as an individual or complete dinner (usually for parties), that includes fries or broasted potatoes, which by the way are my personal favorite, cole slaw & a dinner roll(s). The chicken is crunchy, never greasy, fresh & always piping hot. They even prepare it right in front of you if you dont call in the order ahead of time. I prefer that because it gives me a chance to visit with the owner and converse with the colorful characters that come in off the street. Like Cy....as in sigh of relief! The list is endless! They even serve hot dogs, hence the name, Midlothian-style, meaning with ketchup. Oh no....oh yes! I don't know what it is about the people in Midlothian but they prefer their dogs with ketchup more than mustard. Just ask the owner Stefan he'll tell you. Oh by the way, I've never tried the hodogs or their Italian beef so I can't comment on them, but I'm sure they're good too judging from the orders. I'm just so happy with the chicken why order anything else! Finally, Firehouse, is more than a place to get a great meal, its a place to relax, share a few laughs and meet new friends. A favorite from my formative years has only gotten better. Trips here for rainbow cones and cheese fries were summertime favorites as a kid. To this day I don't know exactly how "broasted" chicken is made, but that was my brother's favorite. I loved the Polish and cheese fries....I know...I know. Once in a blue moon is not going to kill anyone. Anyway, now being grown up and not a "regular" here for almost 20 years, I found myself stopping in on a recent visit to see my folks. The new owner is just the best guy ever. Both he and his son are the nicest guys and do such a great job making sure my decadent high-caloric cuisine of choice is made just right to my guilty-pleasure likings. But luckily, the gray haired gentleman working there said they had an extra breast from a big carryout order they were processing. So I got to taste the chicken also. The hot dogs were good. And I can attest their broasted chicken is really good. The piece of breast I had was hot and succulent. It was so meaty it was almost a meal in itself. They have a number of lunch specials running around $5 with drink. Trivia: I googled "broasted" to see what it is and its trademarked. It's essentially pressure cooked chicken. I've heard a lot of good things about this place, especially about their breasted chicken. But on this day, I just wanted a Polish. But when he said that they don't serve their polishes with grilled onions (Maxwell Street style), I really should've walked out the door. But he agreed to fry some up in the fryer since he doesn't have a grill. But when I saw how little grilled/fried onion he had on it, I asked for more. His response was "nothing is free in this world." I told him that I know nothing is free in this world, so how much extra does it cost for extra grilled/fried onions? That question must've went over his head, because I didn't get any. I politely paid my bill, and left. But the "nothing is free" comment really irked me. All I wanted was some extra grilled/fried onions, and you would've thought that I asked him to pay my rent. Everything was a joke and a smile, but the fact that I could've get extra fried/grilled onions on a product I paid for and was willing to pay for, let's me know that this is not the place I want to spend my money at, because nobody controls my destiny or how much grilled onions I want on my food. From now on, if I want a Polish, I'm going to Maxwell Street, and Maxwell Street only. And I cook my own chicken, so I doubt I'll ever come here for that. If a customer is willing to pay for extra onions, then you should give the customer what they want. If an establishment doesn't understand the Chicago culture of polishes, then maybe they shouldn't sell them. Now, I gotta grill my own onions, just to finish what's left of this polish. Nope, that was the first time, and last time I will visit this place. I have loved coming here since I was a kid! I brought my daughter here today so we could pick up dinner. If you want to win over a mother, treat her children well and that's exactly what happened here. She enjoyed playing with a ring toss game while waiting for our chicken to be cooked and even got a taste of a chocolate milkshake. Don't hesitate to try the broasted chicken, so juicy and delicious!
