My boyfriend and I did our open water dive certification here and it was a marvelous choice! Chris and Nicole are amazing, they are the owners and instructors. There are other part-time instructors and they are all wonderful people. There are online materials that we have to finish before we can participate in class at the pool and lake. There is 1 pool day (8am-5pm); and two lake days. The pool day starts off with swimming 4 laps and floating/treading water for 10 minutes. Then you move on to learn the skills, but I unfortunately did not finish the course. Chris worked with my schedule and found me another instructor, Donna. Donna was available to accommodate my schedule and gave me private lessons. She is super awesome and she is so patient with me; she helped me cope with my fear of clearing the mask underwater and I eventually got my certification just in time before our vacation to Hawaii. I came in here looking for diving gear as I will be going for a dive trip to the Maldives this holiday season and wanted to finally invest in gear that I am comfortable in. I think Chris (name??) helped me out with finding a mask, snorkel, fins and boots. I'm Asian, so I don't have a prominent nose bridge, so I really wanted to make sure that the mask would fit me right. I've gone diving a few times and it's always hard to find that perfect mask. I was initially only interested in the mask, but Chris was quite helpful, so we started looking at snorkels also and eventually fins and boots. Chris was very patient with me, he showed me a few different masks and let me try them all on. I settled with a Tusa/Tabata Freedom Ceos Mask ($74.95). I like that it's a good fit and made in Taiwan! Next up, I chose a snorkel, I decided on the Tusa Hyperdry II Elite Dry Snorkel ($49.95) as I like that the clip for the snorkel just stays on the mask, sure makes life easier. And again, snorkel made in Taiwan! I wasn't quite interested in boots, but somehow, Chris convinced me to get boots. I would always just go bare with fins on and come back with tons of blisters all over my feet. He let me try on X Scuba Deluxe Zipper Boots 5 mm size 7 ($49.95) and they were perfect. And made in Taiwan. The last item to purchase were the fins. I originally was interested in Cressi fins as I had a pair in the past. Chris let me try on a pair of Cressis and I really didn't like how it dug into the top of my feet. So, I let him tell me about another brand. The Tusa Hyflex Switch Fins ($199) were the ones I chose to go with, the fit is comfortable and what's great about this fin is that you can actually take the fin apart, so you can travel with them. And again, made in Taiwan! He then offered me a special, where all these items would be at a special package price of $250. I certainly got a bargain here, as I would've paid close to $400 if I bought all the item separate. I was also looking for a fin bag, but Chris didn't have one in stock. Maybe they'll consider it for the future. I likely will get one off the internet. I would recommend this place is you're looking for high quality gear, This shop also does diving packages, but I've already booked my trip. I may consider this place for future dives. read more

This is a long review, but if you're serious about a great dive shop 1) you've found it, 2) hopefully this long-winded review will show you why! Oh, Fins Up Scuba! I literally LOVE this place and I BET you will too! I had previously been certified years ago in another state but was looking for a dive shop for my girlfriend to get certified before vacation. We, obviously, did not know of Fins Up at the time so we had chosen another shop. [The other shop was not bad but I was looking for a shop I could not only take classes but somewhere I could be apart of a dive family. After my girlfriend was certified and I took a refresher we both agreed neither one of us felt included in the experience. We had just been students although we had been in multiple times, taken classes, and bought equipment there.] But alas, we saw the light! We learned of Fins Up through a family member and I am SO thankful. We had a complex situation of starting our Advanced SCUBA at another shop and some other issues. The owners, Chris & Nichole, were out of the shop but another staff member called Chris and he got us answers quick. The answers were both friendly on the budget (since we had already spent a good amount elsewhere) but also the best to get us certified in time before our upcoming trip. To say I have spent HOURS in the store and not bought anything, just talked about various courses, diving, places to dive, dive trips, and dive equipment would be an understatement. The staff here is so friendly. They are not there to push you into buying equipment or sign up for classes (although we must understand that is part of their job.) I feel they are honestly there to guide you and get you in on the dive shop family atmosphere and to be involved in SCUBA. We've talked about diving but also work and more. It's the kind of atmosphere you could just pop into when you're in the area to catch up and leave, no SCUBA talk needed. From here, we continued to stop in and ask tons of questions, relentlessly looked at equipment (without buying anything) and always checking out the dive trips. Never were we pushed to buy anything or treated like we were wasting their time by not, even when other customers would come in. Eventually, when we were ready, we did buy our equipment. The countless visits & relentless questions without buying anything made me feel comfortable they weren't just trying to make a sale but really were vested in us as divers making a good decision before investing. Flash forward, we continue to stop by all the time and still need to sign up for another class. We have attended several dives at Lake Pleasant for the Lake Clean Up and also just to keep diving. Every time we show up we are greeted like family and friends and it is really inviting. We see the same people at the events and have been getting to know them. It really is a fun environment and really made me appreciate how important a good dive community is. Recently, I went in to purchase a dive light I had been eying but saw a similar, less expensive one I hadn't seen before. I pointed to the two lights and told Chris, "I want this one... but what about that one?" Chris recommended the one I initially wanted and began to explain the difference when I told him, "Chris, whatever you tell me to buy, I trust you." (He knows A LOT about gear!) Chris still took the time to explain to me both lights so I could make an informed decision and did not push me to the more expensive light (which I already was going to buy, haha) or that I had to buy a light at all. On top of solidifying what I already knew, I learned a lot about flashlights and made a much more informed decision. I think, time and time again, through personal experience and by reading other's reviews that Fins Up Scuba is the dive shop you need to be at. If you've made it this far in my novel - you're probably pretty serious about finding a great dive shop and this is the one. Chris & Nichole are very knowledgeable and hire a staff that is knowledgeable and dedicated too. Between diving events, classes, trips, and monthly socials you're gonna find a great dive family and friends here. They sell high quality equipment he believes in and they are not just trying to make a sale. Several times, Chris has given me great deals on the equipment I need (but usually just want, ha) and I absolutely learn something new every time I go in there. Fantastic service! The person who helped us, one of the owners, was very knowledgeable. I was looking for a snorkel mask and she guided me through the process of choosing just the right, properly fitting mask like a true expert. As an experienced diver herself, she obviously knows her stuff! I walked out with not only a great mask, but a comfort strap and new snorkel too. Found these guys on Groupon and made the plunge (hehehe) based on Yelp reviews. What an awesome scuba shop!!! Chris and Nichole are the nicest and most patient scuba instructors; Fins Up Scuba literally could not get any better! I am headed to Australia in a few weeks and wanted to get scuba certified so I can dive on the Great Barrier Reef. To be honest, I was terrified of scuba diving before going through these classes. I don't even like snorkeling, but my friend who I'm traveling with insisted that we dive on the reef. Happy to report that I am now PADI certified, and feel confident enough to get out and dive while in Australia!!! After seeing Fins Up Scuba on Groupon, I decided to call and get more information. I had about 20 questions and Chris answered everything without missing a beat. From our initial conversation, I felt comfortable with him and confident that I would be well taken care of. I stopped by the shop to sign up for the e-learning class - it's about $20 more than the Groupon, but you can do all the learning online rather than spending an entire Saturday sitting in their classroom. There are 6 online modules to go through before you take a quick test in-person. You have to do the online modules and test before you can do your pool dives and lake dives. The package price includes all your gear rentals for all of your dives. Fast forward to the dives - we spent an entire Sunday at a pool in East Mesa (literally 8am-5pm). There were two instructors, one dive master/instructor-in-training, and 5 students total. What a great student-teacher ratio!! You have a lots of skills to learn, and 5 short dives in the pool to practice the skills. The next weekend, we all gathered at Lake Pleasant to do our lake dives (2 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday, 4 "open water" dives total). While Lake Pleasant isn't necessarily a diver's paradise, it's such a rush to be diving for real! I would highly recommend Fins Up Scuba to anyone who is considering scuba lessons. I could not be more impressed with Chris and Nichole and the shop that they run. They are fantastic teachers, truly passionate about their sport and they make safety a high priority. From starting as a terrified student to now being PADI certified to dive up to 60 feet, I can say with confidence that I couldn't have done it without them! Thank you Chris!!! This place is awesome. Did my open water dive certification with them in December 2017 before my honeymoon and I can't say enough good things. I was pretty nervous to do this, but their team helped put all of my fears aside during the certification. My instructor, Donna, was my a great teacher and very patient. I'm not sure if it was Nichole's patience and warm smile or Chris's laughter and encouragement that helps people like me- (deathly afraid of underwater activities). They give you all the steps up front, make sure that you face your fears- and their Open Water class is a major confidence booster. I did not feel capable of this challenge- or de masking under water.. But, by the last day of certification, I was "clearing" my mask when it fogged - without their help. Nichole and Chris are great. I called Fins Up to check their pricing after another shop was trying to get me to spend an extra $200 that was not listed on their online pricing. Chris gave me their pricing models and they really blew everyone out of the water. $275 for a full Padi certification that includes online classwork, closed water dives and open water dives. Chris and Nichole do a fantastic job about making sure everything is crystal clear before you do any skills. If you have a question about anything, they make sure you understand stand it and clarify without embarrassing you. They want to really ensure that you are more than comfortable once you get your certification.
