Phoenix Scuba is the spot where I chose to begin my diving adventures just a few months ago. It started when I gave the shop a phone call to ask about an introduction to scuba course. Kelly and I chatted for almost an hour getting excited about it. She answered all my questions and I could quickly tell the love she has for this sport. Fast forward to this review and these folks have made proper divers out of my group of four. From our first open water course, to a plethora of specialty courses (even wreck diving!) there's something for everyone. I was nearly laughed out of the store and was told everyone buys bolt-snaps from Home Depot and they had next to no inventory. I called the round to a bunch of places to find who had a good price and was flexible for completing an open water certification class after contacting many companies. This company was the one I decided to go with and oh my gosh am I glad that I did. I had such a wonderful experience working with Phoenix Cuba. I was super lucky that they paired me with the instructor named Marte, he turned out to be not only super informative on all things scuba related as he's clearly an expert but also, he was so kind. There were a lot of parts that I was a little nervous about and he did a wonderful job of making me not nervous. I honestly can't recommend this company enough. I've been meaning to write a review for some time. I initially fell in love with scuba diving through a discover scuba meetup event but didn't choose that dive shop to get certified. I then looked at reviews online and discovered Phoenix Scuba. I went down in person to meet them because I had been to another dive shop before this and they were pushing me to buy all my equipment before the training even though I didn't know the sport yet. Kelly made me at ease when she said that most people don't know what they want and to discovered it along the way works best for what each individual needs so just bring a bathing suit and towel. I'm not normally scared about trying something new but this sport tested me in a lot of ways. The instructors were all so patient in helping me get certified and over my fears. I felt like they were there with me all along the way even though there were many other students training at the same time. I was most impressed when I signed up for a dive trip to Cozumel. I got individual attention and several people in the group helped me to become more confident and comfortable with the sport. read more

I also bought a deal for the Open Water Dive course at Phoenix Scuba, and needless to say, I have been very satisfied with their level of customer service. The Open Water classroom course is quick - they go over key points from the book (which you are supposed to read beforehand...so if you do not do your homework, you might suffer for it), however, even if you are a little lazy in your studying, they make sure that you know all of the important information. The pool for the certification is a little small, but really, I feel like pools are meant to get you comfortable with your equipment, with breathing underwater, and to practice. So it could be a huge pool or a tiny pool, but as long as you are underwater, who cares? We had 2 instructors that went through everything with us in the pool. They were patient and talked you through any skills that you were having difficulty with, and by the end of the day I felt MUCH more comfortable about SCUBA. The Lake Dive was a bit challenging for me, I had trouble with some of the skills, but the instructor was very patient, made sure I was comfortable, and helped me finish my certification. I did think that going through a bit of a 'worst case scenario' at the lake was probably the best - now if it ever happens I know what to do and how to deal with it. I really don't think that at the end of the certification you are expected to be a master at SCUBA, I think you are given enough tools to go dive safely. Really, it just takes practice getting comfortable in the water. That being said, we have been back for some Advanced Dives with Phoenix Scuba and despite poor Lake Pleasant conditions, have not been unsatisfied with their help and knowledge. Phoenix Scuba really treats their divers like family. They know your name and your face, they actually remember you. They do take care of all their divers and their level of customer service truly is unmatched. read more

Love Phoenix Scuba:) In my opinion this is the only place you should go to get your open water certification. I bought a groupon earlier in the year for Phoenix Scuba for both myself and my fiance. I've barely ever snorkeled, rarely traveled as a child, and grew up in MI, so my experience in the open water was somewhat limited (and yes, I did have the Great Lakes, but it's cold/frozen 8 months out of the year). Kelly made the experience amazing for us both. Mike and I struggled a bit (Mike couldn't get his mask to stop taking on water, I was having trouble breathing through the regulator), but we made it past the backyard pool run and onto the Lake Pleasant dives. Scuba diving is not for everyone....diving 25+ feet under water was the by far the scariest thing I've ever done, but Kelly worked through our fears to make sure we both pressed on. She took us both under her wing and worked with us individually to make sure we were comfortable with what we were doing. She was the most wonderful teacher we could have asked for. I love their selection of scuba gear at their shop. Mike and I purchased their student scuba package (mask, snorkel, boats, and fins) for our upcoming honeymoon to Fiji. Their gear is topnotch and Kelly and Steve will make sure that you are completely satisfied with your purchase. I would encourage anyone that has ever wanted to scuba dive to go to Kelly and Steve to get their certification. I can't speak highly enough of them:) I plan on going on one of their many scuba trips next year...after I pay off the Fiji trip.... read more

From the looks of the store front that says simply "Scuba" you wouldn't know exactly what to expect about the classes or the instructors inside. Steve and Kelly are fun upbeat people that have a passion for what they do, and that is to teach scuba and do it so you enjoy it. Steve will take the time to answer any and all questions, usually with a sound sense of humor, and the instruction staff is patient and kind, even in the face of some strange and kind of obvious questions. Their main goal is to have every question answered and understood. There are more expensive outfits out there, but this one should definitely be considered, shop around of course, if you want more pool sessions there are other people out there, but here they are willing to work with you on scheduling and they do it with a smile. read more

Stave and Kelly are the jam! We did our classes and pool sessions back in October, but because of some scheduling conflicts, we weren't able to meet again for our lake dives until April. Our fault completely, but they went above and beyond to work with our difficult arses to find a date to get us into that lake and certified. And by golly, we did it! Obviously, I have never been certified for scuba before, so I can only go off this 1 experience. What I can say is that the attention to detail, and the extremely personable experience was more than I could have asked for. Steve and Kelly take their time to get to know their students, and make sure any and all questions/concerns are clearly explained. I thought I was going to black out on the CESA, and my gf was terrified at the idea of taking her mask off 20ft underwater. We talked with Stave and Kelly before we did anything, and they mentally walked us through it, and prepared us. When you are doing your skills, they are within arms length and watching - making sure you are OK. I would recommend Phoenix Scuba to anybody looking to not only get certified in Scuba, but to do it with some great people. I don't often make time for reviews but I was so impressed with Kelly and Steve that I felt I really needed to take some time to share my experience with others. This dive shop has gone above and beyond to get rid of all my fears about diving. The 2 in-room classes were great, Kelly made them really fun and easy to learn. The next step was the Pool Training. The pool was perfect temperature, nice and warm :) which made it easy to focus on all the skills we were learning. Our instructor Steve was extremely patient and really helped me over my fears in the water. I was definitely the slower one in the class but he took the time to go over issue I was having to help me overcome them. The next step Open Water Training at Lake Pleasant. I started the day feeling really excited and confident after my previous weekend in the pool. However, after putting all my gear on and taking my first trip down to the bottom, murky water, low visibility, I began to panic, couldn't get my ears to regulate and was having a hard time controlling my breathing. The instructor did a great job of going over all my issues one at time and slowly, I made my way down to the bottom and was able to hang out for a bit. I was able to get through a lot of my skills but not all of them. My ears kept hurting and they were very sweet about me finishing up my skills training the next day. They advised me that Kelly who was down at the shop had special ear plugs that would help with the ear pain, I was like "sign me up", how much for these magical ear plugs...very surprised, the cost was only $12. When we got to the shop and started talking to Kelly about why we were there, she immediately fitted me with these special ear plugs and said get in the pool, try them out before you buy them. She wanted to make sure that they fit right and worked which really meant the world to me. It's not often that people truly take the time anymore to really show kindness and care the way she did. So, I jumped in the pool and ahhhh!!! Amazing difference these ear plugs made. So today I go back for Diving at Lake Pleasant, day 2 and again I'm feeling excited and confident that I can get through it. But more importantly, I know that if I struggle, that's okay, I have a group of very knowledge instructors that are patient and kind and will help me become a comfortable diver. Other places charge you more for the lesson, (Almost double with a group on discount) and an additional charge for the equipment rental. My experience with Phoenix Scuba was phenomenal! Scuba diving is something I have always wanted to do but have put off given fears/anxieties. Steve, Kelly, and the entire staff made me feel extremely comfortable and were very patient. There are so many good things I could say about the experience, but a few I have to mention are: 1) The price is extremely affordable compared to other options. 2) They were EXTREMELY accommodating with my schedule and worked around my schedule (my schedule was a mess due to work). 3) They had an awesome team that helped with the open water dives, one which really helped me through some challenges I had with my ears, and couldn't be more thankful because that experience made me potentially feel like scuba diving may not be for me. The staff at Phoenix Scuba were awesome, my wife surprised me with a package to get certified, and a trip to San Carlos Mexico for 3 days. They took their time with us and made my wife feel very comfortable which is the most important thing to me if I want to keep diving. They took her fears away and she is planning our next trip. This place is outstanding and I would give them six stars if I could! Kelly and Steve are awesome people and run a top-notch operation with the best instructors I have been around. I started diving back in the late 70s and then took a few (yeah, OK, more than a few) years off and decided it was time to get back into it as I had some high school buddies who wanted to start diving. I was "so-so" about getting back into diving, but since my good friends were doing it, I thought I would play along. After meeting Kelly and going through her open water certification course, I couldn't be more pumped about getting back into the sport. She as well as the rest of the instructors made me feel so good and comfortable that I have gone "all in" and already completed a couple different certifications with more on the horizon in my sights. Coincidentally, I had a trip to Kauai planned which came up two days after my certification dives. I was able to dive over there and that reaffirmed that I made the right decision by getting back into diving, and by going to Phoenix SCUBA for my certification. Steve and Kelly are incredible people. The only thing that they are more passionate about than SCUBA is introducing and teaching others about it. Everyone at the shop is incrediblity helpful and very attentive. Just got back from my second San Carlos trip! And what a blast! One year ago, after a bad experience at another dive shop, my Dad talked me into trying to dive again. What a great experience this was! I have been diving a few times in various locations and decided it was time to finally get certified. The process was simple and thorough. We started with a day class where we covered the classroom basics. Kelly was a great instructor who made the day fly by quickly. Her sense of humor made it very tolerable to sit for several hours. =) The pool dive training was something I thought would be rather lame, but actually, it was really helpful. It was good to have a very close and comfortable environment to learn the equipment and really get a feel for the way it works. We did each drill required and were given ample time to learn what to do, practice it and make ourselves comfortable. Kelly and Steve had many people on staff there to help us. I think the ratio was probably about 2:1. It was perfect. The two lake dives were great as well. We went to Lake Pleasant and were given the chance to explore a bit as we practiced the maneuvers and trained for safety. Safety and comfort were clearly the top priority for Steve, Kelly and the entire staff. Their passion for diving was clear. One thing that I liked a lot about Steve and Kelly, was that they were very interested in our "independence". They did not want to baby us through the process. They knew when we traveled, that we would have to fend for ourselves, so they instilled confidence in us by allowing us to do everything on our own. They watched and checked us at all times, but they didn't do it for us. I think that was immensely valuable. Overall, a great experience. I'm not planning to join them on a trip. Husband had a very hard time on certain exercises and Kelly and Steve made sure that they gave him the extra time he needed to enjoy the new found love of underwater. Best Scuba shop around. My son had wanted to scuba for a very long time. Problem was he was not 10 so could not be certified. Kelly started the Seal Team so he could learn how. He started when he had just turned 9 and loved it so much we took him weekly for the entire year. He just turned 10 this month, and was able to do his first lake dive today. Next week he will officially be certified, and I have all the confidence in the world that he knows exactly what to do! We got a Groupon for Phoenix Scuba, which one of the best decisions we made all year! We wanted to be certified, but it seemed like it would be a long time before we did so because of the price. We came from the East Valley, but the drive was WORTH the experience. The class was informative and entertaining. Kelly was able to accommodate four of us, which was great to be able to learn with loved ones/friends. She was able to teach to all of our levels, which is much appreciated. We did the pool session the next day, which was not only wonderful to get into the water, but also helped make me feel comfortable with all of this equipment on! Kelly, and her partner that day (I believe it was Lisa), were very patient and helpful. When we had to sign up for the open water swim, Kelly was once again very accommodating to our last minute schedules. We got lost on the way, but Kelly had provided us with her cell phone, so we quickly found our way. We met their other instructors, including Kelly's husband, Steve. I was nervous because we had only been taught so far by Kelly and Lisa, but Steve immediately put my nerves at ease. He was funny, yet patient and informative. My partner "left" me and I panicked, but the instructors were so incredibly patient and helped me find him in the dark waters of Lake Pleasant. The next day, they brought us further down, into the colder depths and scarier depths of the Lake. I was having trouble with my ears, but no one rushed me or made me feel like I was holding anyone up. We took our time, got comfortable and finally made it down to 30 feet, where we performed our tasks. The entire time, I felt safe and comfortable and excited to be learning. Kelley and Steve are genuinely WONDERFUL people, I actually cannot say enough kind words about them as human beings, we are already in love with them both. Jen was our instructor for the classwork part of the course and she is amazing as well. She took time to make sure everyone understood what they were learning and answered every single question until we all understood. Getting in the water with all our gear on for the pool time was a bit scary for myself and my wife, there were tons of help too for the first time with everyone getting in the water. None of us had done it before and there was about 6 of us, Kelley got in the water along with Mike to help us all out for our pool training and what a relief that was, when we needed help we got it and getting individual attention was AMAZING. Kelley calmed us down when we needed it and guiding through our challenges. She walked us through what we needed to work on so we can overcome that hurtle. We wanted to get some more pool time in and Kelley even let us come and scuba in the pool on her day off to give us that extra practice time, all the equipment is there and provided for you through training, Kelley let us use her own personal mask to help us with the breathing and clearing our mask part of training and WHAT A BIG HELP that was. Kelley also let us try some merchandise that she had on her showroom floor to see which type of fins we liked better. We will definitely continue on with our diving skills and grow in this sport with Kelley and Steve and cannot wait what the underwater world has to show us when we go down there and see it....
