So, yeah, this wasn't the best. I visited Finest Playa Mujeres from 6/3 - 6/7 to attend Kimmy L's wedding (which they MAJORLY dropped the ball on - read her review to get the full deets on that.) I myself will limit my review to my personal experience with the resort itself.
Finest Playa Mujeres makes a great first impression. It's in a gated community (expect to wait for like 10 minutes at the front gate while they make sure you are registered guests), so it feels very secure, and the grounds are very pretty. They greet you with champagne and a cool towel right when you arrive, and even their basic room (Jr. Suite) is large, clean, and has nice amenities.
So yeah, I had a really good impression when first arriving. But unfortunately, it went downhill from there, and fast. To start, the resort itself is clean, but cleaning our actual room was incredibly inconsistent. It was only cleaned during the day once, and we only received turndown service twice during our 4-night stay. The minibar freebies were nice, but even though they told us it would be restocked every day, it wasn't.
Which brings me to my next point: the food at Finest Playa Mujeres is legitimately TERRIBLE. I'm actually not very picky - it takes quite a lot for me to truly dislike a dish, but I can count on one hand the number of things I ate that were even "fine", let alone actually "good." I know all-inclusives are not generally known for their haute cuisine, but it was just BAD.
They boast something like 8 different restaurants, all of varying cuisines (though, it should be noted, the majority are only open for dinner), and the food was equally awful at all of them. We're talking rubbery scallops, moist tortilla chips, overcooked steaks, and a fettucine alfredo that literally seemed like they just dumped some noodles into a bowl of cream of mushroom soup, it was so watery.
Menu descriptions were also totally incongruous with what you'd actually receive. For example, at Le Petit Pasier, their French concept, they had "trout ravioli" on the menu. What we received was smoked trout rolled up with cream cheese - nary a sliver of pasta in sight. Very confusing.
They also clearly suffer from inconsistency in their restaurants. I saw multiple instances where another person ordered the same thing I'd ordered the day before, and the two dishes looked completely different. I don't understand how one day, the "squid stew" can be a watery bowl of tomato soup with a few pieces of squid, and the next day, it's a pile of seafood lightly tossed in tomato paste.
In addition to all of this, the restaurant dress code is EXTREMELY restrictive for men. Even in the "casual" restaurants, they don't want you wearing shorts or flip flops. If you're a dude, you should plan on bringing MULTIPLE collared shirts and slacks on vacation, and they do not care if your luggage got lost en route and you literally only have the clothes on your back.
The drinks we had at the resort were mostly fairly decent, though, again, you couldn't always be sure of what you'll be served. Not every bartender knew how to make an old-fashioned, is all I'll say. Also, the bartender at the pool bar in particular kept disappearing for long periods at a time and displayed extreme preferential treatment to people who tipped him ahead of time (I thought the whole point of a tip was to thank someone for services rendered?)
For the most part, the staff was friendly and pleasant - with one major exception. We tried to go to the Tinto & Tapas restaurant one evening at 11:15 PM. The restaurant states that it closes at midnight. The host, Edgar, tried to REFUSE to seat us, claiming that the restaurant was closing too soon. We literally had to argue with him to be seated... in an EMPTY RESTAURANT that wasn't due to close for another 45 minutes.
When my husband and I said that there would actually be 4 people in our party (the other couple was on their way), Edgar said, "Where are they?! You can't sit because if you order some dishes, then they come, and they order, it will take too long." Again, this was a full 45 minutes before their stated closing time. The only reason we were "allowed" to sit down was because I assured him that I would order for all 4 of us. Super rude. If they don't want people eating there so late, they should change the flipping hours of the restaurant so it closes earlier! Problem solved.
As for the final piece de resistance, when I returned home, I found out that $20 had been taken out of my wallet from my room. I also verified that money had been stolen from at least two other guests. I contacted the resort's management group about this issue, but have yet to receive a response. This is supposed to be a 5-star resort! I really didn't think that having our money stolen by the staff was something we'd need to worry about.
I cannot and will not recommend this resort, or any other in the Excellence group, to anyone looking to vacation (or especially plan their wedding! read more
