Spent some time at Finback Brewery on Friday evening. Ordered several tasters, two drafts, and some cans to go. Ended up trying nine of the beers on the menu.
Quality
I first ran into Finback Brewery at a beer festival in South Florida. I knew they frequently collaborated with some of my favorite brewers in the South Florida, so when in New York I decided to seek them out, and it was the correct move. They are an IPA heavy spot that really tries to push the envelope. During my visit I tried out nine of the beers on top including Something Amarillo, Trees And Leaves, Dematerialize, You, Visible Spectrum, Cats And Dogs, Duplicate, Relaxation Cassette, and Spirt Of The Dead Watching. Now if you don't enjoy hazy and hoppy beers this is probably not the spot for you. Of the thirteen beers on top, ten of them were some form of IPA. I tried two of the non-IPA selections Relaxation Cassette, a sour with lactose, and Spirit Of The Dead Watching, an imperial stout. Both of them were fine, but they were my least favorite of the evening. The best of the bunch for me were Dematerialize, Cats And Dogs, and Duplicate. Dematerialize is a dry hopped IPA, that is just smooth and easy to drink. Cats And Dogs is an awesome DIPA collaboration with brewer Civil Society. With guava and raspberry flavor it has the perfect mix of citrus and hop. Then there was Duplicate an incredible triple IPA. This one packs a punch and is not for those on the fence about the style. In the end if IPAs are your thing this is the spot for you, otherwise you may want to look elsewhere.
Quantity
They don't have traditional flights, but they encourage you to get as many 4oz tasters as you like. Obviously the larger drafts are a better deal, but the tasters allow you to get a sense of what beers you will enjoy.
Value
The 4oz tasters were $2 to $3 depending on the selection, which is pretty standard in comparison to other breweries. Drafts meanwhile ran between $5 and $9. All fair prices for good beer.
Ambiance
Finback Brewery is located in the Glendale area of Queens. The brewery sits in a garage building at the end of a residential street. The taproom area of the space is large and spacious. With a bar that stretches about half the length of the building and then a bunch of picnic tables around it. There is plenty of room for busy days. They also have a private room in the back for large groups. It was a beautiful day outside, so they had the garage door pulled open to let in some fresh air. They also had set up some games including cornhole to help occupy time. The decor was simple and mostly made up of piles of barrels, some of which appeared to be in use and others marked for future beers. In the background a mix of classic hip-hop had many guests and the staff singing along.
Crowd
There was a decent crowd during my visit to the brewery. Folks constantly streamed in and out, but there was always a good number of people sitting around the bar. I saw a few people come in just to grab cans and go, but most stuck around for at least a drink. Many of the guests had come by bike, so I assume it is a hot spot for locals.
Service
The entire staff at Finback was amazing. The bartenders were extremely friendly and welcoming, talking to customers about the styles and types of beers they enjoy. They also helped create a nice laid-back atmosphere where it is easy to enjoy a few brews.
Parking
The brewery is located in a residential area that appeared to have very limited street parking. I was just visiting the city, so a car service was the smart choice for me.
Extra
Finback Brewery is a cool spot in Queens that places heavy focus on IPAs. And while this may not be ideal for folks that like to explore lots of different styles, it is great for lovers of hoppy beer. Definitely a spot I would happily return to for a nice hazy IPA. read more
