I really wanted to like this place but I must say I was quite underwhelmed with everything I got. Place and decor wise was nice. Service was good too, although it's mainly a order first and seat yourself style. We opted for the okonomiyaki since people recommended it and also got the wakayama breakfast. There were other things on the menu too that sounded great, but I wanted to try their tamagoyaki and I really liked their brunch concept. That being said, I did see their other items and they looked and smelled pretty good, but not sure about taste. Okonomiyaki - a lot of flour and not much filling at all. The batter was dense and there really was nothing else in and on it other than dough and sauce. Very underwhelming for their original. Wakayama Breakfast - this was also very underwhelming. For the price, you basically get two onigiri which, to be honest, was nothing special, but I did like the idea of using purple rice to give it an extra depth of flavour and texture. Miso soup was ok, and seaweed salad was a bit on the overdressed/sweet side. The tamagoyaki was very disappointing as it was not fluffy at all and a tad overcooked for eggs. The takoyaki was also just batter and no filling. There was a tako inside but I really couldn't taste it. Overall, might come back to try their curry don and other items as it seem pretty worth it, but definitely wont come back for their okonomiyaki and breakfast or omelette. read more

Wow. They have lots of unique coffee flavours here. I wish I could try more than one. For now I had the Smoked Marshmallow Mocha coffee. It was SO yum-yum and it tasted just like it's name. This was our third stop on a mid afternoon food adventure. We needed something warm to quelle those full bellies of ours, and to further put us into a state of itis. This cafe caught us with the gold leaf ice cream or something. I think initially we might have even been interested in stuff our faces more but we were instead drawn into the interesting drinks they had. Case in point, I got a Salted Lychee Chai, and my partner got the Strawberry Hot Chocolate. What I really enjoyed was that the Chai aromatics of the tea we're still present. The lychee which has traditionally and in 99% or all products tends to dominate and mostly over-dominate other flavours, was much more mellow and played that accompaniment roles in terms of flavour. It added the sweetness without being like a syrupy sweetness or like artificial sweetner kind of thing, although I can almost guarantee you it comes as some kind syrup. The lychee flavour also comes through subtly, and the salted element is a nice surprise although not as pronounced as I would have liked. The strawberry hot chocolate, tasted as if they steamed strawberry milk vs normal milk. It's interesting but not my cup of tea. I love the care and creative offering that this cafe offered. TL;DR The comfort food you wish you could have but not having to travel to J-town or K-town. Think convenience with quality, but a 3x$$$ for me. Food (3*/5*) Absolutely GREAT --- OYAKODON --- Must try. It literally tastes like mom's cooking. Minus the purple rice because that's a recent toronto food trend and I'm still not biting even after Gushi. Even though it's not exactly my cup of tea, it was made to pair with the Oyakodon quite well. HOWEVER, rice was on a bit of a MUSHY (too much water) side for me (and my friends). So let's hope whoever's mastering the rice behind the counter adds a little less water from now on. The house plate is not worth the price for it's amount and quality. All of the items were pre-packaged frozen and some takoyaki didn't even have taco!!! Please avoid and order one of their rice bowls instead or literally any other items (no do not order any of the other plates on the same section LOL) The shogayaki (pork and ginger) didn't taste like pork or ginger. It was just very sad and bland. Not enough shoyu or ginger. It almost seemed like their ginger was pre-cut a few days ago so the flavour of it dried out. To add ontop of the bland flavour the mushy rice killed it. Drink(S) (uhhh*) The (S) is for singular because omg the drinks were sosososososososo expensive and I've read in previous reviews they're not drop dead amazing or big portions. I ordered the ORGANIC green tea with lemon and ginger and wow. It was like. I could get a liptons and slice in an overly dried piece of flavourless ginger and you know, a lemon, and put a $6 price tag on it. Yeah. Atmosphere & Service (4.5/5*) Very casual, not too loud, brunch with family and/or friends or by yourself. The servers who bring your food are nice but not very interactive as it's a 'get it yourself 99% of the time' type of place. I really love the open ceilings where the sun just basks you and your food in all of the natural lighting possible. A perfect no-filter-gram-worthy place to go if you must ask. The seats are kinda cute and a certain level of acquired-comfiness. I personally like wooden booths(?). You do go up to the counter to order, they give you a number for the table, and then they bring out your meal to you! This little gem located inside Kensington Market is only 2 weeks old! I was walking in Kensington when I stumbled across this small cafe. At first it appears that its your typical local coffee shop but once inside your delighted with an assortment of japanese foods and bakery items. I had the salmon croissant which was amazing in taste, the croissant itself was warm, super fresh and had a delicious buttery taste. They also include a in house made sauce that really gives it a unique taste. Overall the dish was great and the side salad it came with , complimented the dish well. This place is fun. It serves Japanese fusion food with great coffee. It's a great place for chat, break, brunch. However I felt like the staffs here are not very honest, or they do not know what they are doing. I ordered an omelette sandwich which said $8 on the the menu, but the total came to a $12.29 after tax + an automatic 10% tips. When I saw the bills, it had an $1.99 extra adds on the bill said "$1.99 egg white only" which I did not request. So I went back to the cashier, and asked what this extra charge was. (Right, need to mention this place is pay before serving) when I asked the staff what the $1.99 extra is for, she just kept replying "oh it doesn't matter", like excuse me? It's like she's trying to avoid to answer why there is extra charges. So I went to another staff and trying to figure out why I was charged an extra $2 when I did not put any extra request, then finally the staff who handle the orders for me asked what exactly I ordered and refunded a $2 cash to me and said it was a mistake. This is so ridiculous. Perhaps it's a new way to ask for more tips, but my suggestion is make sure your orders are right before paying! Other than the not so honest staff or she's is just dreaming, the place is great to stop by. I got the fully covered vanilla ice cream and was pleasantly surprised with how tasty it was. The first lick coated my tongue with gold and sweet creamy vanilla flavor. Bring a mirror, because you'll absolutely have residual gold spots on your lips. Although the gold really had no taste, it added a certain aesthetic appeal to their ice cream. There is a marinade and a coating that isn't just breading. It's a good thing I didn't order the takoyaki since they could only ruin that but no worse than T&T did. Don't get me started on that one. I recently placed an order through ritual and decided to eat part of it inside the cafe. A few minutes later one of the employees approached me and told me I had to leave. I asked why and he said because they charge 10% more for dining in. I explained that I paid more than that with the tip through ritual and asked if there was any way to remedy the situation. He told me again I had to leave and walked away. There were only a handful of people in the cafe but everyone could hear what was going down and it was very embarrassing. We stopped into this little café in Kensington village which looked better than it actually was. It is really a coffee house where people stop in to use the Internet the food here is not recommended. We ordered some sushi, a spicy tuna roll. It was actually a California roll with some type of placed on top that almost resembled a crab dip. It was not good. Also ordered was a Japanese fried chicken chunks that were just OK not too good either. The bright spot of the food there was the homemade mushroom soup which was good and the pancake breakfast. Film Cafe by Eative is located in the heart of Kensington Market and features Japanese beverages and food! This place resembles more of a cafe for beverages and light snacks than one for meals but I will be basing this review solely off of the 24K ice cream that the Film Cafe heavily markets. Food: I got the 24K gold ice cream. They recently added this to the menu and have been heavily promoting it everywhere - you can't miss the signs for what looks like this summer's fad! It's available in two flavours, the vanilla cream and the caramel coconut flavour, for the soft serve. I got the caramel coconut flavour. What was strange was that the soft serve was whitish pink which isn't representative of caramel or coconut unless I've been living under a rock and there's actually such think as pink/red coconut or caramel. This soft serve in a waffle cone was neatly tucked with the gold foil which honestly didn't have much of a taste to it, but it made the ice cream look really boujee - perfect for those instagram foodie bangers. The soft serve was pretty decent for soft serve, which was rich and creamy and the waffle cone was crispy. Atmosphere: This place is cool as there's a silent film playing at all times in the dining area and since it's in the heart of Kensington, it's always lively and a good pitstop to take to enjoy some beverages and desserts. Service: Service was typical and no complaints here! They're pretty busy here and fast to serve their customers. I didn't feel as though the service quality was compromised because of the high customer traffic flow which was good! Price: It's $12 for a half gold foil ice cream and $14 for a full gold foil ice cream. I decided to go full out on this for an extra $2. If it wasn't for the gold foil, I wouldn't say that this ice cream was worth it. Nothing special but definitely better than the classic ice cream truck soft serve. Verdict: I heard many good things about the other food at Film Cafe. The 24K gold ice cream is definitely something people should try once but not something you should get regularly. Hop on this popular item before the summer ends! Giving this a 3.5 stars because while the ice cream was good, it wasn't to die for and is something I only got for the experience! I came here to grab breakfast and work, and this checked the boxes. Free wifi (it cuts off every half an hour though and you have to log in again) and a nice view of Kensington Market. Service is really subpar. When I walk into a cafe that's empty and the person behind the bar looks up, sees you, looks down and then completely ignores you until you say, "Hi, good morning.", that should've been a warning sign, especially since the food has to be ordered at the counter anyway! I feel like the place is managed by students (nothing wrong with that) who haven't been trained and have no idea of how to interact with customers. When I made my order he did not once even look at me, and didn't even ask if I wanted a drink or coffee, just blurted the total immediately. I asked to add coffee and he said, "yeah yeah yeah" and when I specified that I wanted scrambled eggs, again with the "yeah yeah yeah". Again, not once was eye contact made. It looked like maybe he was looking down at his phone. The experience isn't going to stop me from coming again to give it another shot since I live down the road and it's convenient, and the food is so-so (coffee is OK). While the service and ambience were pleasant enough, I found that the food did not warrant the high prices and 10% gratuity if you eat in, which I found quite strange. I had the Kyoto breakfast which was decent, but not exceptional. I didn't care too much for the purple onigiri, which was flavourless and dry. Would I try this place again for some other dishes? Came here on a weekday in the afternoon to catch up with some old friends. You pretty much serve yourself here. We found seats and ordered our food up front at the cashier. Someone will then bring the food and drinks to your table. Simple pimple. Soup of the Day - Mushroom Soup I found that this hit the spot for me. But it definitely also tasted a lot like Campbell's mushroom soup, with more sliced mushrooms in it, which makes me wonder. Takoyaki Ah, this is my kind of food now. Delish for sure. A bit heavy on a dough in my opinion, but not too bad. If you're looking for just a cafe, I would recommend to look elsewhere though. The tea and coffee just seem a bit too steep (ha!), especially for the Kensington hood where there are so many around every corner. As for food, it's not bad, but I can't say that I'd be dying to come here again. The novelty of the black and white film playing in the background is quite rustic and lovely. This is a very very hard review to write. I have been here three times and I finally decided to write this review. The first time I went here, I went up to the counter and ordered the karaage don. It said three pieces of chicken but they were huge and the set was delicious. I didn't check the bill when I was paying. The second time I went there, I got the wakayama breakfast. Like the first time, I got a table, went up to the counter to order, and someone brought my food over. This time, when I was ordering, the staff told me that there would be a 10% service charge to dine in. It wasn't on my card machine; it was added by default as a part of the bill. She asked me if "it was okay", and I told her that I would prefer to pay after my meal, since tipping, to me at all other restaurants I've been to, is only necessary when someone comes to take my order. My bigger issue was that it should be *my* option to choose how much, or whether, I want to tip, not the staff member's. She didn't really say anything and looked quite troubled so I told her I was okay to pay the service charge. The food was delicious and I enjoyed it throughly. Today, I went again, but instead, I ordered ahead through ritual. I thought, if I order ahead, get the food from the counter and clean up after I'm done, I wouldn't need to be served and thus wouldn't be required to pay the service charge, right? I got the food from the counter and grabbed an empty seat and opened my takeout box. A server immediately came up to me and told me that I couldn't eat there. I thought someone had reserved the seat, so I asked why. She told me that I couldn't eat takeout orders in the store and I had to leave. I was in shock; it was a self-serve restaurant and it was really empty. Why wasn't I allowed to eat there? She was super hostile towards me as well, making me extremely uncomfortable, especially since I started to eat already. Unfortunately, I won't be coming back until the service charge becomes an option for customers, instead of being a forced charge. The Sakura Latte was divine. I did not expect the flavor to be so subtle and delicious. It was a light pink visually and the aroma of Sakura and strawberries were evident. My friend ordered the Coconut Butter Latte and I have to say it was rich and yummy. Although you can smell the aroma of butter and coconut, it wasn't too heavy or artery clogging. Just the right balance. The 24k gold ice cream was notably so good! At first I thought this was going to be another fad that would lack quality in taste but I was pleasantly surprised. The soft serve comes in two flavors; matcha or vanilla. I opted for the matcha flavor. Once you choose your flavor you can decide to decorate your cone with half cover of gold ($12) or full coverage ($14). I went with the full coverage as it was only $2 more. The matcha soft serve was smooth and very creamy and the gold sheets add a very slight metallic taste to it. It stained your lips for awhile and makes you look like you have gold for lipstick. It's a Japanese inspired breakfast/brunch spot with options for coffee and tea as well. Their brunch is fairly priced and come in quite substantial portions. They bring your food over to you, given that the ordering space is quite small. There is a good amount of seating, but finding a table on weekends can still be a struggle.
