On day one of TIFF, I found myself wandering around festival street before my first movie. I was casually looking for a coffee joint when I stumbled upon Pigeon. It's a pretty cool little place. They have a whole restaurant inside but they've also got a space for takeout orders. I decided to keep it simple and just grab a latte to go. It was ready a couple of minutes later and seriously hit the spot. They're obviously using superior coffee beans because this concoction was rich without being overwhelming. Pigeon was located directly across from our hotel so it was an easy choice. We were happy we made it. They were busy during breakfast hours, but offered us seating (with no reservations) outside. The food was presented well. The table got the pancakes, Benedict w/asparagus & croissant, egg breakfast, & the lox bagel. Everything tasted fresh & light. This is one of the cutest places thats open for a full service breakfast really early in the morning (8-9am) and I kinda wanna go back to try everything else they have ơn their lunch menu. They've got a tree with fairy lights and it seems like a really big place (the mirrors help) but they've got limited seating and an outdoor patio space for diners. I'm really happy with my steak size portion (I forgot what 10ounces looked like) and loved thát it came with very seasoned potatoes. My partner ordered the shakshukka. I tried her plate and really loved the pomegranates and pine nuts that came with it - I never thought to pair those together with shakshukka but if I'm ever making it at home it's something I'm gonna do. While I was in Montreal, I wasn't able to visit this place despite it's many locations, so I was very excited to learn they have a location in Toronto! I made a last minute reservation and was pleasantly surprised that they still had spots to accommodate. Upon entering they have beautiful decor, especially the tree and foliage. Although I would've preferred a booth spot, sitting in the middle of the restaurant was also fine. We ordered brunch and drinks: - Mushroom and eggs toast: I added lox (smoked salmon) for $5 for an extra bit of umami flavour. Tasted great. I really appreciated that the toast was quite thin, unlike other brunch places where you have to cut the toast with a chainsaw (haha). The blistered tomatoes were so fresh and like tiny explosions! 9/10 - Creme fraiche scrambled eggs: We had this with pastrami. I think for the price, this is a great option because you get a little bit of everything. I thought everything was very pricey for the quantity received, for the waffle fries in the picture it was 6.50 for a few fries - felt pretty criminal to be charging so much for the quantity. We walked in and immediately noticed the venue was smaller than it looks in the posts, less chic, and the tree screams fake immediately (we knew it was but the pics make it look passable). We sat down and the waitress was very friendly and sweet. We ordered appetizers since we were super hungry. The spinach dip was fine but nothing special. Same goes for the French onion soup. The salmon tartar was overly fishy for my friend and I. Basically everything was good, not great, but came with a relatively hefty price tag. The restaurant features a day and dinner menu where the day menu consists mainly of brunch classics (toasts, omelettes, shakshuka, etc.). They also have salads, sharables and other more lunch items as well. There is an extensive dinner menu as well. Hailing from Montreal, you already know that this place will have good brunch! The restaurant has around 50 seats indoors and around 10-15 seats outdoors on their sidewalk patio. I stopped by for brunch on a Thurs morning around 9:30am. The place was half full where there were a few customers working on their laptops, some families, and some tables where friends were catching up. I was promptly greeted at the door and shown to a table. The interior of the restaurant is rustic modern where the concrete walls, wooden/marble tables, and tan banquettes make the space warm and inviting. There is also a large tree in the middle of the space to tie all the elements together with plants throughout the restaurant. The vibes are definitely chill and casual. I noticed they do have a take out counter as well if you would like to grab a coffee or pastries to go. I opted to order a stracciatella toast (sourdough, stracciatella, anchovies, microgreens, balsamic, grapes, and honey) with a side of bacon as well as a cappuccino. My drink and food was made at a reasonable time where the staff even brought me a better knife to cut my toast. I've had the combination of stracciatella and anchovies before elsewhere and I liked how Pigeon's version had the grapes which added a fresh component to the dish. My only wish is that I wished the bread was a bit more toasty. Otherwise, coffee was great and you can't go wrong with bacon (wasn't crispy which is my preferred way of eating bacon anyways). Service wise, staff are friendly and they don't rush you. You are welcome to chill in the space. There were a steady flow of customers coming in when I was dining there and I definitely already know that this place will be really busy on the weekends! For service, this place ranks high. The people working definitely conscious of how the comings and goings. That being said, the server did take forever to get to my table. She was very nice and apologetic. The menu is definitely shorter than it's counterpart cafe landwer but nonetheless busy until after peak lunch hours around 2-230 pm It's a healthy size menu. Something for everyone. I ordered the shakshuka which was very good. I wish the halloumi was in the sauce to soak up the flavour and easier to deal with. The London fog latte was perfect for me. We dropped by on a Tuesday for brunch and it started as quite empty but quickly evolved to busy as we approached lunch hour. At the entrance, it splits to the left that leads directly to the bar, or right that goes into the dining area. FOOD (4/5) We ordered the Croissant French Toast, Crème Fraiche Scrambled Eggs, a Cortado, and an Iced Latte. The Croissant French Toast was recommended by our server, and I would absolutely agree. If you love rich sweet dishes for brunch, this dish ticks all the boxes. Creamy, sweet, rich, crispy croissant, and balanced with tart fruits. I devoured it. Highly recommend! The Crème Fraiche Scrambled Eggs comes with choice of bread and protein which we opted for bacon. Super classic breakfast arrangement, nothing special. Bacon and homefries were crispy and flavourful. Although the eggs were fluffy, they could've been a bit more seasoned. The cortado and iced latte were very standard with a nice dark roasted bean used for the espresso that holds up with milk. Nothing amazing but nothing wrong. SERVICE (4.5/5) Due the way the entrance is layed out, no staff saw us come in so we had to meander by the bar to get some attention. They promptly seated us and took our orders. Drinks and food came out at a nice pace, but I noticed it was significantly slower once it got busier. Staff was nice and helpful and did not rush out even when it got busier. AMBIENCE (5/5) Pigeon has a nice rustic and modern balance with their interior design with a faux tree in the middle. Very pretty and eye pleasing to eat around. ACCESSIBILITY (4.5/5) Located right on King St W, it is easily commutable and a short walk from St Andrews station. Driving would be a bigger headache due to traffic, limited street parking, and construction everywhere. Otherwise great location! PRICE (4/5) I think the drinks are very fairly priced, and the scrambled egg dish had good amount of food for the price. The croissant french toast was delicious but for the price I would hope for a bit more to make it more filling. OVERALL (4.5/5) Super nice spot and I'm glad I visited. The cafe's decor, especially the tree in the centre is certainly attention grabbing. I have previously had a takeout coffee here (nothing special), but we decided to book a dinner here before a show on Valentine's Day. At the time of booking, there was no mention of a special menu. On arrival, we learnt that actually they had decided to put on a 4 course, $75 menu with no other options. Price aside, we weren't looking for a big dinner- especially as we still had other plans for the evening; and the Pigeon's standard menu was the attraction in the first place. We did negotiate with the manager to share a 4 course meal - but it was clear we weren't the only ones taken aback by the change. At least 5 other couples came in (most seemed to have reservations), sat down and then left after the menu shock. Many more came in and left after the menu shock. For a Valentine's Day - the restaurant was effectively empty. The main problem with having a high priced multi course menu, is that you are going to be judged against the other high priced multi course restaurants. And in that regard, Pigeon falls woefully short. The opening course of a beet and arugula salad, was ordinary. The risotto second course was probably the best of the four courses, with good flavour balance and good portion of mushrooms. The steak and mash third course was a sharing plate - nothing special, cooked to order, but a bit drier than it should be. The mash felt like it came out of a packet. The last course, of a berry pana cotta, was poor - poor consistency, and too sweet. It was a poor experience, but thankfully the show was a lot better and made the evening great. There are a lot of restaurants in this area, there is no reason to return to Pigeon. read more

I've had Pigeon on my list ever since they opened due to the beautiful decor and strong reputation in Montreal where it originated. We made a reservation for Saturday brunch and though the interior decor lived up to the hype, the rest of our experience unfortunately fell flat. Intro What we ordered: - Crème Fraiche Scrambled Eggs with sourdough and pastrami - Halloumi and Labneh Shakshuka Final Thoughts: The server was nice, but tracking them down proved to be a bit of a mission. Our food also took close to an hour to come out and was overall bland and dry needing lots of salt, ketchup, or hot sauce to add flavour. The halloumi shakshuka my friend ordered came with a single piece of halloumi and she found the tomatoes tasted very acidic as if they came from a can. The food wasn't bad but for over $20 a plate, it should be good not just edible. We won't be returning. read more

I don't often say "best ___ I've ever eaten," but the blueberry pancakes at Pigeon were hands down the best pancakes I've ever eaten. So fluffy yet dense at the same time, loaded with so many blueberries, with incredible syrup - really was a phenomenal breakfast. My friend had the breakfast sandwich and enjoyed hers as well - especially the breakfast potatoes. The service could be better - it was almost as if our server was hungover and had no desire to be there on a Saturday morning, but the food warrants the five star review despite mediocre service. Originally, this review would've been 4 stars because I liked the food and overall atmosphere, but what ruined the experience was near the end, when server Asia with a Y did her bit of self-promotion for a bonus while acknowledging her service wasn't the best. She asked for 5 stars on Google reviews, while also mentioning how she knew she didn't give our table much time and attention because she was overloaded with other sections and tables. To be very honest, if she had just not said ANYTHING at all, it would've been an easy 4 stars for me. With some time and consideration, I may have even boosted it to 5 because i don't like offering negative reviews unless it's deserved. As someone who works in service and deals with limited staffing, i get it. But asking for 5 stars when you know and admitted you didn't perform at a 5 star level does not motivate me to give 5 stars in any way. At that point, it's best to just work hard and show you're working hard and not ask for anything, and that rating could naturally come. Minus 2 stars. Beyond that, my actual review: I've been wanting to visit since they first opened. What caught my eye was the tree in the middle of the restaurant with string lights, offering this beautiful glow when peering in at night. I visited on an evening ~8pm a few months ago with friends. Waited to post this review because I honestly forgot I had it drafted and unposted. This review was written mere moments after I left the restaurant. It was quite busy with most seats taken, but we were able to be seated within 2 minutes. The hostess was very friendly and efficient! So please reward the Asian girl with the light dyed hair. She gets my 5 stars. I ordered the truffle pasta while friends ordered the 1/2 chicken, burger with side citrus salad, and the tahini tacos. The tahini tacos were so good and came with 5 pieces. I think it's important to note that they're actually lettuce wraps and not dough based. They were served with 2 types of sauces, but the sauces were served with small tongs.....which was very confusing......they didn't skimp with the filling and actually provided generous portions per taco. The 1/2 chicken was served with well made fluffy and soft white rice. Whoever's back there cooking knows how it's done. Whew. I got to try a bite of the 1/2 chicken. I thought it just tasted like baked/roasted chicken marinated in a basic BBQ sauce. I usually don't like ordering Italian foods because I feel it's overpriced. I thought the truffle pasta was OK. Could have used more topping beyond shaved truffle pieces and oily sprinkles of cheese. The portion size was good enough for me to save to another meal. This restaurant is primarily suffering from bad service, which is definitely something they can improve upon. Our waitress didn't give us cutlery, a napkin, water, nor did she check on us once during our dinner to see how we were doing. It was an abysmal experience in terms of service. The food was good, the chicken schnitzel sandwich, the side salad and the drinks were great. The French fries were not cooked enough, which I was surprised about, another thing to improve upon. They also did not have the matzah ball soup available, which was a standout item at their Montreal location. The ambiance is nice, the busboy was very pleasant and friendly. This place was terrible. I never make reviews and I absolutely made a yelp account just because of how bad this place was. Tbh I never tried the food, it never came but the service was so terrible and the servers were so rude, inexperienced, and mean that we just didn't want to stay. It seemed a bit over priced and pretentious and had the ambiance like they were trying to manufacture exclusivity. Like trying to appear better than you to manifest an idea of quality but it was all kind of performative and lame. no one who worked there seemed at all happy to be there. They also just claimed to be very busy but clearly were not, and seemed to panic over having less than an hour and a half between table sittings. It was a really odd, weird vibe, and we felt really uncomfortable and unwelcome. Go a little bit down the road to the landwer instead honestly. Pigeon was our late night gem and we stopped by after our show. We wanted a place that was a little quiet where we could grab a drink and chit chat. Pigeon and our nice server Nana delivered. We ordered their fries trifle and it was fries lol with a little twist of parmagiano on top and some leaf spice. I tried their Peroni draft beer which was ok as well as TO on the rock which was mostly rock and no drink. That is to say, it was not very much drink for the price. Nothing special but a good place to chill out and unwind for the night.
