We call this restaurant Dad's Place because if my father is on Discovery Bay for Lunch or dinner…read morethis is where it goes to eat, and as such many of us are forced to join him there - not that we complain! Il Bel Paese brings a sliver of Italy to Hong Kong, more in the way that they are understaffed and completely do not understand to idea of rushing than their food. To me that adds to the charm and teaches one patience and how to simply enjoy a social occasion. The manager, an Italian man with interesting facial hair, strolls around in his bright colored pants correcting the pronunciation of each patron's order. "Yes, yes, it is coming." He says with a smile whenever asked about the food or bill. The restaurant has the majority of its tables just outside its doors. You can imagine how chilled-out a feel it is on a clear sunny day with an Aperol Spritz in one hand, it makes it hard to argue with any of the waiters! The Italian food they serve tastes authentic, meaning very good. The dishes I'd recommend are the pesto penne pasta with pine nuts, an easy meal for lunch or an afternoon snack, their gnocchi is sublime - one of my favorites - and their salmon dish is also rather delicious. The only problem being that the portions are a bit on the small side leaving one hungry after the meal. Worry not! They have a gelato corner within the restaurant, besides its small shop of Italian ingredients, that offer a range of sugary good flavors. If you are preparing to visit Il Bel Paese be sure to do it in a happy mood without a time constraint. If you can do that you'll have a much fuller experience, learn a few Italian words, and maybe, just maybe, forget about work the next day!

We made a day trip to Mui Wo and enjoyed lunch here. It's a little way off the "busier" side of…read moretown, and while it faces the bay the view is not as scenic as you may imagine. Nonetheless, service is nice and food is handmade and high quality. We really enjoyed the pizza but the carbonara sauce was a bit too thick to my liking. Serving is surprisingly huge by Hong Kong standard.

If you have ever been to what I call the "sleepy little town of Mui Wo" you will know that this…read morearea is definitely ..."unique" I think that is the best way to describe it. This trip wasn't our first time here to Mui Wo in fact we had eaten dinner previously next door. This time, Hubby and I had hiked over the "ridge" from Tung Chung to grab a snack. Ok, well we worked up an appetite...so it became more like a dinner and drink. After all, it was a five mile hike up and down the ridgeline. Our friend who lives here recommended The Kitchen. We trusted his palate since the last place we ate with him was pretty good we decided to go with his recommendation. The Kitchen is located west of the ferry pier. We pretty much had an idea of the location and it wasn't hard to find once you pass the ferry entrance/exit. We arrived hungry, parched and tired to an open area restaurant situated at the base of some flats. An inviting restaurant with open window and a covered area facing the bay. It would have made for an idea setting except for the various parked working vans and buses blocking our view of the bay. You want small, intimate and family feeling? This is your place. It only had six tables with brightly colored chairs and a small bar area, it's truly perfect for the area to gather solo or with a small group. I immediately loved the vibe. It was a still considered a "holiday" here with CNY still going strong, so it was probably quiet for a Saturday afternoon/evening. Our sever immediately greeted us and allowed us to choose our table. We knew we wanted pizza before she even handed us the menu. We chose a white Sauvignon Blanc which was cool and refreshing to sip on as we waited for our pizza. Surprisingly, it was quite quick! Out came a crispy, thin crusted, meat covered pizza which we gazed at and then dove into. A "small" sized pie was 6 slices. And from the photo, you can see it was "large"enough for the two of us! Sausage, bacon, pepperoni and ? It was so delicious! Fresh herbs, cheese and sauce...I think I want another one! While the service wasn't anything to rave about. If you come to Mui Wo, bring an empty stomach and try this place out. You won't be disappointed! We'll definitely be hiking over more often to try out other stuff too!

The only thing I would say about this is that it was very noisy, which was to be expected! And it was lovely to see the kids playing on the beach, but if you were after a quieter affair maybe best to visit this lovely park island restaurant on a weeknight, instead of at the weekend. Food was lovely, modern Italian food. Very refreshing and light after some of the heavy stodgy Italian food available in Hong Kong. I had the Grilled Chicken and Aubergine Salad with Chickpeas, which was delicious! My colleague had the Italian pizza which was very authentic and had a crispy thin base; which all the pizzas comes like here. So if you like deep pan pizzas, best to give them a miss here! I would definitely return (maybe on a less noisy weekday evening!) and try a risotto or a pasta.

Reservations are a good idea for big parties. My friends said the ribs weren't that great, but other than that, we loved the starters, the red house wine at HH prices, the friendly service, and I loved my spaghetti. Pizzas are big, very thin crust, and it's got great views and a chance for the kids to run around and play. A+.

One thing the Hong Kong does well, of course being a cluster of islands and into its food, is…read moreseafood restaurants. And I think that I have found the best there is (well, in my opinion that is). Wah Kee Seafood Restaurant in the Mui Wo cooked food centre is brilliant. Sure, it serves the same menu as every other joint in the place, standard fare including such delights as; deep fried salt and pepper squid, steam fish, sweet and sour fish, salt roasted chicken, fried noodles, salt fish rice, the list goes on. However, it just serves it better. The dishes are really well prepared, well seasoned, and, importantly, thoroughly cooked. It looks like the food is prepared by a single chef, and can he both cook and expedite fast! The restaurant is usually pretty busy of an evening, and he still manages to get the food out in a timely fashion. The venue itself is not the prettiest. You are in a cooked food market, and you will be sat on plastic stools at a plastic table with plastic bags as a table cloth. Remember my two rules, always rinse your crockery (fortunately, most of the table are placed over a drain which runs the length of the outdoor seating area, so you can pour your dregs directly into the drain), and never look in the kitchen. This venue actually has an open kitchen, so you can see what is going on - oh, yes, it's fine! Staff here are generally good, they are impatient with me (looking like a native but speaking like the Queen of England), but are fine with my ex-pat buddies. I think it's more a fascination with them when the Chinese guy speaks English, the Welsh woman speaks Canto, and the American/Swede speak Mandarin - they just didn't get it, haha! There is an English menu which has decent translations in it. Oh, they occasionally wheel out the youngest of their family to help serve, which is hilarious when you see a 6 year old wandering through the restaurant with a tray of Blue Girls. If you are not to precious about your surrounding, are happy to order using hand signals, and want a decent feed for little money, come here. Last night's dinner for five, which included beer and all of the above and more, only cost HKD200 per head. They even looked confused when we left a tip!
