We went for breakfast. The menu selections arent great. If your just in the mood for a couple of eggs, toast, and some sausage or bacon... this isnt the spot. So I ordered French toast - it was very dry, no syrup or sauce and had a couple of fig slices on it - Meah. My wife ordered coconut pancakes, the portions was more generous than my French Toast, but also very dry. Everything like bacon or eggs have to be ordered separately as $$ide dishes. The wait staff is horrible. We had to get up from our table and go hunt them down just to get a menu, then to order coffee, and for everything else. Spent the last few days in LA visiting my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. We had a beach day in Venice and decided to hit up Fig Tree for breakfast! My friend is from Arizona and I'm from NorCal so we had to eat somewhere by the beach when in LA! I ended up reserving this place via the Resy app to be able to use my Resy credit. I loved how this restaurant was conveniently right by Venice Beach and right along the walk path. The place seemed to be booked and busy so highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time if wanting to eat here. Specifically for me, I ordered a Beach Smash Burger with Fries and a Matcha Lemonade, while my friend ordered the Pasta Del Mar and Green Juice. She also ordered the Calamari for an appetizer. I liked how well cooked and seasoned my patty was for my burger. I love a good smash burger! The fries were also very tasty and a bit crunchy and had a good amount of salt but not too salty. 3.5 STARS: I thought this place was very charming, with a great atmosphere, especially if you sit on the outside patio, a little further from the front. The food was just ok, but really - the whole experience was not good enough to justify the pricing. We had the calamari, which came with fried slices of lemon (strange) and zucchini (only about 1/3 was calamari), and it was overfried and oily. That didn't work for me! Also, we had shrimp rolls, which were categorized as an entrée, but really it was an appetizer. It literally was a small bread roll 5 x 2 inches long, filled with small shrimp; very tasty, but again not filling in the least!! Plus, they charged extra for fries with this little thing. Personally, I was turned off about that as the server said we had a choice of fries or salad; this was another way to upcharge. Disappointed, we ordered salad and added additional shrimp for extra $$, and the salad was small, although very tasty! We enjoyed ourselves because the atmosphere was nice and the service was super friendly. Still, I left feeling that I greatly overpaid, plus they tack on extra for health care on the bill; sorry, but that's another turn-off. As a suggestion to management: Your costs are your business, and as a customer, I am fine with paying high prices that include ALL your costs. It's tacky to add that stuff on the bill to see; I expect you will provide adequate pay for your staff, and I would have happily paid even more if the food was correctly and fairly portioned. read more

I am writing this review because I have been a frequent customer of fig tree for years and the service/ food has seemed to be in decline. Waiting: none , I came on Thursday midafternoon. I was prompted to seat at the bar seating facing the window, which was a great place to work. Service: Well to be frank, there was no service. I had to waited for 15mins before I headed to the Bar top to ask for service. Magically my server arrived and I walked me back to my seat. My server Ramiro seemed rushed and avoidant , even though The place was near empty. I did not see him throughout the service and had to walk around the restaurant to order. He often walked near me with no acknowledgment and said he would return shortly and never did. I ordered the corn cake which was incredible. I also ordered the calamari which felt like a scam. It's mainly just fried Zuchini and no octopus. I had to ask other employees for the check, a box, and also to close out my check. An $80 check deserved some service and you won't find that at Fig Tree. read more

We've been to Fig Tree three times now, and unfortunately our most recent dinner was a big disappointment. We came back specifically because we had such great experiences the first two times, but the food this time was noticeably below the quality we remembered. My salmon in particular didn't taste fresh, and overall the ingredients just didn't seem to be at the same level as before. I'm not sure if there's been a change in the kitchen or in sourcing, but it was surprising given how much we enjoyed our previous visits. We went on a Friday afternoon and even though it was packed, we were able to find outside seating quickly. Everything we ordered was absolutely phenomenal! The service was very inconsistent ranging from super friendly to completely ghosting us. Shortly after sitting down, we asked for two new water glasses because both of ours were dirty with food in them. When the waitress picked them up, she simply placed the dirty glasses back next to the clean ones, presumably to be reused for another guest. That was enough to almost make us get up and leave. After we returned home, I realized we had been overcharged for extra drinks. Unfortunately, after reading other reviews, it seems this is not an isolated event. Down in the area for work near Venice Beach and this spot popped up at just the right moment. When we arrived it was almost empty, which honestly made the experience even better. It did pick up toward the end, but service never skipped a beat. Attentive, warm, and genuinely top-notch without hovering. The food leans toward classic comfort happy hour rather than full "destination dining," which is why this lands just shy of five stars for me. Everything was good, thoughtfully prepared, and enjoyable, but there wasn't quite that singular wow bite that locks in a perfect score. I very much enjoyed the small menu with the farmer call out on the back! That said, the natural wine list absolutely deserves its own applause. I ordered an orange wine that was a textbook example of the style: bright, balanced, and refreshingly free of funk. It paired beautifully with the Black Magic Baja oysters. They were on the smaller side, but beautifully briny, clean, and honestly perfect little salty slurps. The Kalamata olives surprised me in the best way. I preferred them far more than the green olives, which almost never happens for me, so credit where it's due. The salmon tostada was lovely and satisfying, and the ceviche was light, fresh, and pleasant, nothing overworked, nothing heavy. Overall, this is a place I really enjoyed and would absolutely return to, especially for breakfast. Matias, the owner was responsive and easy to work with from the beginning. He provided me with his cell phone # and we were able to communicate both via text and email. He also generously provided a complimentary tasting as I haven't tried many of the items on the catering menu. I ended up hosting a birthday lunch on an early October afternoon and the weather could not have been more perfect. It was warm with a cool breeze. Less than 10 minutes after putting in the order, both chicken tinga and chilaquiles came out. Best way to describe it is extremely beautiful presentation but the food tasted really sour. Salsa on the chilaquiles was supposed to be tomatillo but maybe it went bad or they added too much lime too it. Usually a huge fan of tomatillo but it seemed too overpowering and just mouth puckeringly sour. Very disappointing as its hard to kill chilaquiles. Sweet potato chicken tings hash was tiny portions and overwhelming sweet. Sure probably as a result of the sweet potatoes but there was no other sauce on the hash leaving the poached egg as the only liquid binding the dish together. Again it looked beautiful but the dish didn't have any substance. It was a typical LA meal, pretty for pictures from the outside, vapid and insecure on the inside. The patio is large, and dog friendly! I do recommend securing a reservation since it can get very crowded for brunch. Especially since it's right on the boardwalk. I ordered the chilaquiles and my friends ordered the chicken tinga hash. Both were delicious. I highly recommend requesting the hot sauce with the chilaquiles if you're a spice lover such as myself. The dish comes with a mild verde salsa, but I always appreciate an added kick.
