Extremely disappointed with the food, which was aggressively mediocre. I felt like I could have cooked it at home and done a better job. The bruschetta baguette bread wasn't toasted and the kale salad was limp. The sauces on both of our entrees were thin and watery, with mine lacking any of the garlic and ginger flavor it was supposed to have. Also my entree was supposed to be a zucchini noodle dish but it was mostly mushrooms with maybe a few zucchini noodles thrown in there. The salmon was cooked well but the spice rub was way too thick and had too much chili powder in it. The peach cobbler beignet was extremely doughy and barely had any peach in it. Also we weren't offered an outdoor table so we didn't realize they even had outdoor seating until well into our meal, which we would have preferred. The server said wine bottles were 15% off, so we ordered one. We had already finished our appetizers when we were told that they had "just opened the last bottle" of the wine we ordered, so we couldn't get the bottle but we could get glasses (which of course weren't discounted and are more expensive to begin with). On the menu, that particular wine wasn't even offered by the glass so why the "last bottle" was opened at all I don't know; seemed like an excuse to just get more money out of us. We also felt really rushed as each course came out of the kitchen extremely fast and we were never even asked if we wanted a second drink. For a two-person meal over $100, I would expect much better food, service, and hostessing than we got. Rather than Fig (Food Is Good) this place should be called Fio (Food Is Ok). read more

My friends and I went to Fig Bistro for a late brunch. We decided to take advantage of their cheap mimosas and started off with a round of those. They were surprisingly good! I decided to try the oreo pancakes and my friends ordered the "which came first" and the Southern fried. The food came quickly, which was a plus. However, the food was pretty mediocre. The oreo pancakes were cooked perfectly, but the batter didn't have much flavor and the oreos were a little too crispy. I tried a bite of the Southern fried too and that was just okay, as well. Fig is a great spot for an inexpensive, quick brunch, but it definitely isn't the best place for a top-notch brunch in Charlottesville. read more

Fig's decor is beautiful and that's about the only pleasant part of our dining experience with them. We went in tonight for restaurant week and got seated and waited for 20 minutes for someone to come to our table. We were sat square in the middle of the restaurant (it's one room so you can see the entire restaurant basically from anywhere you sit) and multiple servers passed us and not one stopped to even give us water. I flagged down a host finally and they assigned us a server. We each had a three course meal for restaurant week and the dishes were really small portions across the board and almost all the food was flavorless. The jalapeño cheese grits had neither cheese nor jalapeño, the only decent thing we ordered was the oysters. The margaritas were really inconsistent, the first was basically lemon juice and the second was closer to what we ordered. Our server barely touched the table and we consistently tried to flag her down to no avail. Our "beignets" was actually just 1 beignet and the apple pie came ice cold without ice cream, despite advertising it on the menu. The bill was expensive and we weren't impressed with the drinks the food or the service. For a restaurant that stands for "food is good" (fig) I was shocked at how poor our experience was tonight. My husband and I visited this awesome place for brunch on 10th February! It was an early Valentine's Day brunch for us. The place was crowded at 10am on a Sunday. We waited for about 15 mins before being seated. The waitress did mention to us that you have to make reservations at least a day before. Something to take note of. We settled and I ordered an Orange Juice. The OJ was great and FRESH. My husband wanted the cinnamon pancakes and I wanted Oreo and we wanted to try the fried chicken with gravy and overeasy eggs. So we did ask if the pancake could be customized to instead of 3 of the same kind of pancakes to a variety. They agreed and gave us one Oreo pancake and one cinnamon pancake. Both were amazing by the way. The fried chicken is my fav. They did mess up my husband's order on the eggs by giving him scrambled but fixed it by giving another serving of over easy. All in all, it was a lovely brunch! Food and ambience was good. Parking though is an issue as with many restaurants at that stretch. But absolutely worth it. *thumbs up* read more

I would love to give 2.5 stars here, but I'm going to round down because in comparison to my other 3-star reviews, this place just didn't quite reach that point. Firstly the atmosphere is gorgeous, such a cute little bistro. The pricing is also excellent, but that's about all it has going for it. The food wasn't awful, let's begin with that. But overall it was just kind of disappointing. I came with a friend for a late brunch on a Sunday. I got the Southern Fried, which was eggs (I wasn't asked how I wanted my eggs, and they just came scrambled), a biscuit with sausage gravy, and fried chicken with sausage gravy. So the eggs were straight up COLD when I got them. Not even lukewarm, just cold. The biscuit was dry, and the gravy and the chicken were fairly bland (although I'll give them a good fry on the chicken, it was crispy and well-coated). I would have loved more spices and more Cajun inspiration. Service was a mixed bag. The host was lovely and polite, which was great. Our waitress was fast for sure but it was fast almost to the point of being rushed and curt. I am a huge advocate of the "nobody is obligated to smile" idea but a little kindness goes a long way. I would try this place again. My friend has been here a few times and has really liked it, so a second chance isn't off the table. read more

All downhill from there for Sunday brunch. Ordered regular breakfast - bacon was cooked well but scrambled eggs and potatoes seemed to be scooped out of the cafeteria buffet warming trays. Biscuit was served cold with rock hard butter. Lots of employees but our waitress checked once during our meal while we waited for a napkin and refills on coffee and tea. We won't be back. We can came to Fig for Friday Survivor, which was advertised as $2 soda-based doubles and $4 juice-based doubles. We got there a little early, so we ordered some pierogies as an appetizer, and confirmed the drink deal with our server. The pierogies were decent, but it was $12 for 4 small pierogies!! Honestly, given the quality and portions, it felt a little like highway robbery! After an few rounds of drinks, we asked for the bill, and were surprised to see that we were double charged for all of our drinks. We asked the waiter and he said the Friday deals were $4 soda-based doubles, but since we were given incorrect information earlier in the night he fixed our bill. I'm not sure if this restaurant is just trying to rip off drunk college kids, but the drinks were definitely advertised as $2. I was very disappointed with this experience, because I've generally enjoyed going to Fig in the past. read more

Fig is a convenient option for UVA students to visit for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks right near Central Grounds. Brunch: I've been here for brunch very frequently, as I enjoy the ambiance and affordable menu options (especially the $2 mimosas on Sundays). They offer both sweet and savory options with good portions. The steak and eggs is the most bang for your buck, and I would recommend it if you enjoy starting your day off with a filling meal. The chicken and waffles is another good option with a very substantial portion. Even though I enjoy my time at Fig due to the ambiance and great service, the food itself is always under-seasoned (I've never eaten a dish without needing to add salt, pepper, and hot sauce), and even their best dishes are only average. Dinner: I think my biggest problem with the dinner menu is the attempted "Cajun" theme. Given that the food lacks in any bold flavors or seasoning, I see very little (if any) Cajun influence on the food. Dinner at Fig is always an enjoyable time for a meal, but the food is no better than average when compared to other restaurants. Drinks: Fig survivor hour is one of the best kept secrets at UVA. On Thursdays from 8-9pm, they offer rails for $1 and doubles for $2, and their drinks are strong. This is the best deal you can find at any sit-down restaurant around. You can stop by the bar, or get a drink with your meal. One of the most awkward dining experiences I've had. Menu looked great; came in with mom and a friend. Pescetarian friend wanted to sub something for the chicken in a salad bowl. The chef/manager (one and the same) it wasn't possible to do that--not even to sub cheese--and she'd have to place a separate side order for tofu or whatever. I ordered a spinach/goat cheese bruschetta and a side of fries. Bruschetta looked nice but noticed something odd: the spinach was warm but the rest of it was cold. The bread hadn't even been toasted! Waitress said chef would "warm it up" but didn't recommend warming up goat cheese (what?). I said this just wasn't what bruschetta was and he argued that the bread is never toasted in bruschetta. Finally I said I wouldn't eat or pay for it, and was pleased he took it off the ticket. I didn't trust the chef to get anything else right so just ate a side of soggy fries for lunch. At the end of the meal the waitress informed us that we had to be on a single ticket and she wasn't permitted to facilitate multiple payments. That should've been on the menu. One person had to pay and the others reimbursed her. It's a cute spot and the menu was promising, but the manager was so inflexible that it ruined my lunch. read more

One word: Cevapi. Cevapi are house-made sausages served with a Mediterranean flat-bread and a ajvari (eggplant/red pepper) dip. This is also their house specialty and I highly recommend it. FIG = Food is Good. The menu is fairly diverse - from po-boy style sandwiches to salads to pasta to meats. They seem to take a twist to their food - for example, they serve a shrimp linguini with a 'no-nut' sauce. Their baklava does not use honey, but a lemon syrup. They definitely takes things to a new level. Atmosphere; Cozy/Casual dining. They also have a bar as well as outside dining. Prices are reasonable - we had wine, appetizer (to share), side salad, entree and dessert for $32 each. Service was outstanding - first - everything came out SO fast. I was more impressed with Anya, who is a gem. first, she recommended a nice simple wine. Then when she described the Cevapi, we were sold. Then we found out that it is homemade on premise! We also find out that her baklava was award winning and is how she got started. I'm only here for a couple of days, but I would definitely go back for more! p.s. Super great! $4 red wine at happy hour on Mondays. The Malbec was great. Had a basic side salad to start. Bed of arugula, topped w/ tomatoes and onions, house red vinaigrette. Dinner was an amazing chicken special with herb rice. The chicken was in a stew full of flavorful veggies over the rice in a giant bowl. Ben the charming bartender recommended it to me. To finish the grilled donuts for desert with ice cream and chocolate drizzle. Super yummy but I suggest sharing! Went here for restaurant week and were very disappointed. The ambiance was fine and service outstanding so I gave them a 2 for that. The food was never-come-here again territory. My wife ordered the trout which clearly trout but pretty bland. I ordered the lamb chops and made a point with the server I wanted medium rare, she assured me that was how they made them all unless otherwise requested. I then asked her to remind the chef anyway. The two tiny chops came back beyond well done, almost as dry as the mashed potatoes that resembled ground cardboard. Stopped in for a Sunday breakfast and had a unique and enjoyable meal. their breakfast menu is somewhat frustrating in that many items no not include the typical associated sides (i.e. omelettes without toast and/or homefries). To avoid this I ordered the steak and eggs breakfast which came with potatoes and a biscuit. The steak was seasoned and cooked properly and was quite good, but not wow-worthy. Same goes for the biscuit. Potatoes however were surprisingly extra delicious. Overall the portion was hearty, flavors were good, and I was pleased with my breakfast. She really liked her omelette. 3.5 stars I visited fig for brunch a couple weeks ago and I've been meaning to write a review. First of all, I had no idea fig served brunch! This was great because it's usually so crowded to find a place for brunch on the corner and fig wasn't too busy so we were able to be seated immediately. In terms of the brunch menu there were so many vegetarian options!! This was awesome for me being a veggie because this NEVER happens in the history of brunch! I ended up ordered the brunch spanakopita and I had no complaints. I also had a side of grits which were OK as well which was unfortunate because I love grits. All in all It was pretty good food but definitely wasn't out of this world. The staff was super friendly and attentive. I never had to wait long if there was anything I needed. Overall, I enjoyed my brunch experience at fig. It's a good place to go if you're into not waiting a long time to be seated and friendly people! read more

We came here for brunch on a Saturday, last week. The place was somewhat busy when we arrived because there was a group of 20 or so for a birthday party and two or three other groups of 5-6 people too. We were greeted by the bartender who offered us a seat at the bar after another couple got seated at a table. This sat well with us (pun intended, ;) ). It quickly became apparent that the bartender, Nick, was running the show. He was all over making sure everyone's needs were met. There was another server and two or three runners/bus people but they didn't seem to be doing a whole lot. He kept directing them but they always seemed to be muddling around rather than looking for stuff to do or knowing what to do. Later on, after we got our food, what appeared to be the owner kept telling Nick and asking him to do stuff even though everyone else was not doing much. He kept at it but it seemed annoying to watch, and I'm not even him! Lol. He really made the meal for us which is why I gave this place 4 stars rather than 3. Anyway, we ordered drinks and food at the same time since he was so busy. We both got Bloody Mary's and they were really good, spicy yet not unbearable. He also gave us Tito's vodka in them since they ran out of Sobieski (not horrible either IMO). I ordered the poached eggs in avocado with a vegetable succotash (it wasn't a succotash but that's what it seemed like to me). Either way it was great but a tad too spicy. The spiciness overwhelmed the flavors of everything else unfortunately. The eggs and avocado were good. It was something that I've never seen any where else. My fiancée order shrimp and grits (don't have a picture unfortunately). She liked it but it had a tomato purée (maybe sauce?) on it that was also spicy. Overall it was good. Austin took care of me and was super! He obviously is a very diligent worker who goes above and beyond to serve his customers, and he's more than happy doing it! I ordered a salmon pesto salad and the salmon was cooked perfectly. . no, seriously perfect; crunchy edges and slightly rare middle. With limited time to explore my first visit in C'ville, I was very pleased with this spot. Chatting with Austin and Kelsey and another customer at the bar, they all gave me great company, and guided me to other spots to check out. Went for restaurant week. GREAT gluten free options, I really appreciate that. Wine was good. Fig salad was wonderful. My wife got gumbo for an appetizer and we had to wait for a spoon for her to eat it. Lamb chops tasted good but were tiny. I got excited when the menu said chops plural. If I was being dainty, all the chops together were maybe 4 small bites total. Dessert was grilled peaches with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream was half melted when it got to me and mostly liquid by the time I got a spoon. The plating of the peaches in the pan with the ice cream looked nice but the warm pan on a hot day meant the ice cream was liquid by the time I got to eat it. The server was very friendly and polite but inattentive. Water glass got refilled once after I asked. I asked for another refill of water later on and never got it. We had an early dinner (~5:30) on a Saturday and it wasn't particularly crowded until we were finishing up. All in all, seems a nice place to go for a small foodie meal. If that is what you are looking for, enjoy. Glad I tried it, but probably won't be back again. read more

We had a reservation at 12:30 and we were running 15 minutes late so we called the hostess and her name was Zoey. Zoey responded by saying you need to hurry up and get here. that was the first red flag. After eating, we were finishing our very expensive mimosas and before finishing Zoey and a male staff member started laughing and blasting music (to get us to leave) and kept getting louder and louder until all 9 of our ear drums starting hurting. I had to speak up and tell them to stop where they finally stopped torturing us and we got out immediately. Worst food ever, burnt pancakes and sub par drinks. Heard good things about this place and decided to come here for brunch the other day. I ordered the Eggs in Avocado which was poached eggs in avocado with salad with dressing, beans, corn, olive oil, and remoulade. My meal was super bland--there wasn't enough seasoning in the dish for any taste. My eggs were also dry and cold. There was too much dressing from the salad which left a very watery consistency to the dish. I ended up not finishing the meal because I was so disgusted. Service was welcoming and pretty responsive but kind of slow due to the busy crowd during Sunday brunch. The place had a very lively environment and is nice for catching up with a friend. I went here on whim with two friends after a meeting for my summer internship. I have pretty much been in Charlottesville full time for a couple years as a student at UVA who works during the summer. I live really close to the restaurant but always passed by without going in. Today, I was a little bit wary as I am very conscious about food prices, but I decided to give it a go. The waitress was really nice and made good suggestions about what to eat. I got the walnut-crusted chicken. It was really good and the portion size was pretty large. We got some marinara sauce to go with it and that was a great choice. Ultimately I was very satisfied with the meal and felt it was totally worth it. If you are in town and looking for a delicious meal, I highly recommend Fig. P.S. The chocolate cake and peach compote with vanilla ice cream were extremely good. I had the crab cake atop what claimed to be "risotto" but seemed to be just regular rice sautéed with spinach and tomatoes. It was edible and filling but not as described and overall lacked flavor. My brother and I came to Fig for restaurant week. And to be honest, I chose it primarily because they had beignets available for dessert. With the restaurant week menu, I had the gumbo, the crabcake, and of course, the beignets. The gumbo was good, but nothing special. The crabcake was okay and wasn't exactly something you'd crave or remember. The beignets, however, were absolutely delicious. I'm not sure if my craving for beignets amplified that a bit, but it definitely hit the spot for me. This is an awesome spot for brunch on the corner. It's New Orleans themed and the food is sooo good. There's healthy options and also indulgent ones such as chocolate chip bacon pancakes (worth it!). As always, the food and service were great. The menu is always filled with some eclectic choices along with some old standards. The service was attentive without being there too much. They were working under a handicap also as a Thunderstorm knock out half the electricity in the restaurant. Oh and the baklava for desert was hand made by the owners mom! Good job!
