I got the plate that had 3 pc chicken (drum, wing and breast) with white rice and black beans on top, as well as a side salad + about 5 corn tortillas (rolled inside of foil). I also added a a beef empanada on the side. I think they may have given me chicken but it was good. Will definitely be trying something else from the menu! We wanted to try some of the food in the taqueria earlier this week. La Confianza is Latin…read moreAmerican supermarket that also has a meat market (carniceria), a small bakery (panaderia), and an ice cream store section. As soon as we walked in, R sniffed the air and said, "I smell menudo. I want some." We walked past the small panaderia area and, finding ourselves at the rear of the store where the taqueria was, we looked at all the food behind the glass in the kitchen area: chicharron, whole roasted chicken, pupusas, cooked beans and rice. There were other sections opening up to the dining area side, and these had toppings - radish, cucumber, beet, jalapeño, mix of cilantro and onion, lime wedges, and three different hot sauces - that customers could self-load onto their taqueria food purchases. R ended up getting a bowl of menudo with some tortillas, and I ordered a half of the rotisserie chicken and three tacos (two al pastor and one carnitas) made with homemade corn tortillas. We sat down at one of the booths that are in the dining area, which I think is pretty large for being in a supermercado that has so many different sections. One of the employees brought the food out to us. R liked his menudo, although it didn't have hominy in it, which is how he prefers it. It came in a huge bow, and was packed with meat and tripe. I sampled a little bit, and I thought the soup was on the salty side. My tree tacos were good. The size of the al pastor meat was inconsistent. On one of the two al pastor tacos, there were big and thick cubes of meat, which made it kind of tough, and the cubes of al pastor were smaller and more tender. The al pastor meat had good flavor; I could tell that the meat was marinated and had a hint of pineapple. The carnitas were good also. It's just that they didn't have a bold flavor that I like. I dressed all of the tacos with the complimentary onion and cilantro mix and the hot red sauce. The half of a rotisserie chicken had a light citrusy marinade on the outside. The chicken was a little dry due to being overcooked. In our future visits here (because we just HAVE to try some of the other taqueria menu items!) we plan on trying the ice cream and the different combinations of ice cream, fruits and other toppings as only the Latin Americans can mix up. Before we left, I scoped out the meat department. Most of the items looked very fresh, but I thought the price points were a tad on the high side.

It isn't much to look at from the street, but if you are looking for an authentic Cubano or Cuban coffee, this is the right hole-in-the-wall to stop into. After craving a real Cuban sandwich for 12 straight hours, I woke up salivating for one. A friend had told me about Chiquita and I made it a part of my Sunday errands. I stepped into the store and ordered my sandwich. I was told it would be 7 minutes. I looked around and checked out the grocery items, cold case (packed with pure cane sugar sodas) and other convenience items. I could smell the mojo pork heating up and could not stand the wait. Once I had the sandwich in hand, I didn't care about how hot it was. The bread was perfectly toasted on the outside - practically crumbling away as I bit into it. Slices of ham (the ham was a bit forgettable), swiss cheese, mustard and mayo, chopped mojo roasted pork and pickles (possibly bread and butter - sweeter than expected). The entire sandwich was the perfect combination and so flavorful. Probably one of the best renditions I have had in the city - I'll hit this place up again.

Some were spicy, creamy, and tangy. Perfect to individualize each bite. The torta was well stuffed and prepared. I liked how soft the bread was and the many options for fillings. Of the tacos I tried, they were all delicious. Overall, I love hole-in-the-wall places and this restaurant can be added to my favorites. Prices are very fair and quality and here. What difference in just a few months…read more I ate here about a year ago and was very disappointed. Big improvement this time. Las Tortes Locas had been recommended to me by a friend who has enjoyed a different location. This location was crowded and uncomfortable. It was noisy and hard to be heard. I didn't enjoy my lunch. The only redemption of the fist visit was the horchata which was authentic and I enjoyed very much. This visit was much better. They have expanded their seating area and can now accommodate 3 or 4 times the crowd. They now have room for a salsa and condiment bar that lets you customize your plate. The Air conditioning is comfortable and the atmosphere great. If you come in here as an English only speaker, which I am, expect some communication issues. They don't speak English. You are not their target customer, the local Hispanic community is. They will work with you just take your time and don't expect everyone to speak English. This is their restaurant and you (as an English only speaker) are the visitor. I ordered the Burrito Loco lunch special for $9.89. It was very good. It came with rice and beans. The rice and beans were average but the burrito filling was well seasoned and enjoyable. Given my last visit and the overall price of goods I can go 4 stars but not 5. Still a solid 5 and I will come back. Give it a try. If you are from Latin America and need a break where people speak your language it's great. If you are an Anglo but ready for a bit of diversity in your life you will like it too.
