Best tacos in the city hands down. It's located inside the supermarket at the back. Super casual and the tacos are ready quick. There's some seating there so you can eat immediately. There's a toppings area as well so you can customize how you like your tacos. I got the carne asada taco and a quesadilla. The quesadilla was so fresh and the cheese wasn't too melted either. All in all everything tasted great. Got a churro at the front as well and would recommend that or any of their fruit juices. read more

I came here for lunch after finding out that there was a taqueria at the back of the supermarket. Chicago Supermarket is in the long Pinetree Plaza strip mall. There is lots of free parking in the large lot shared by all of its Pinetree Plaza neighbors. To get to the taqueria, enter the store through the front and keep walking all the way back near the wall on the right. There is an area with tall stools at high counters where customers can sit (or stand) and enjoy their food. Oh, before you order, just know that you'll need to pay with cash, since the taqueria doesn't accept credit cards. Taqueria customers can look at the large menu on the wall and order at the register nearby. I think the prices are great! I ordered chicken flautas that were priced at less than $6 and a bottle of lime Jarritos for under $2. The dining area was very clean and neatly organized. I waited for about 10 minutes while my flautas were made, and my order number was called out. I was the only customer in the area, so I knew the order was mine without even having to look at my receipt. My flautas in a plastic basket were covered with all of the toppings: lettuce, cheese, crema, tomato and avocado. The whole thing in the basket looked like a salad. I dug out one of the flautas and started eating it. It was nice and hot and crispy! I took another bite, and ... the meat was cool. I thought that was odd, so I dug out another flauta and started eating that one, and had the same result. I told one of the employees that the meat was not hot inside the flautas, telling her, "No me gusta." (I don't like it). She took the basket of flautas and felt one of them, and, apparently agreed with me. She asked me what she could make for me as a replacement. I told her carnitas tacos - two of them. I watched as she threw away the flautas, take some meat from the carnitas bin and put the meat on the grill. After two minutes, she handed me two carnitas tacos with hot meat in them. I dressed up the tacos with some condiments from the toppings station that is in the dining area, adding cilantro and chopped onions, and squeezing limes to add some citrusy tanginess. The carnitas had that great mouth-watering pork flavor, and the employee had put a lot of meat on each of the tacos. I added some of the hottest bottled red hot sauce that was available in the dining area, and it all was soooo delicious! I'm glad the employee turned my experience around! I will definitely be coming back to try other menu items, like the burritos, the al pastor meat, and (weekends only) the pozole and menudo. Before I left, I quickly walked through the supermarket part of the store. The items in the meat department looked fresh, and the prices looked reasonable. One area that caught my eye were all of the piñata's hanging overhead, just waiting to be filled with candy before getting bashed at someone's party. read more

Supermercado Chicago ranks among my favorite places on Buford Highway. Not only does this place stock a quality selection of Mexican goods, but the taqueria in the back of the store happens to serve my favorite goodness wrapped in double corn tortillas on this stretch of BuHi. The supermarket part of the store offers a good cross section of Mexican groceries. A decent variety of fresh produce, multiple types of dried chilis, and tortillas made in house highlight what can be found on the shelves here. In the back, the carniceria section offers incredible chorizo and freshly-ground masa dough that makes for killer homemade tacos and sopes. Speaking of tacos, the taqueria in the back is truly awesome. Tacos here come in multiple varieties, especially on weekends where the shop offers more unique meats like goat and tripe. My fiance and I have enjoyed most of the meats here, but have liked the exemplary chorizo, juicy carnitas, tender goat, and saucy al pastor tacos the most. The tacos arrive on double wrapped, housemade corn tortillas. The fresh salsas here make the tacos truly stand out, as four (two red chili based, one verde, and one avocado) flavors of delicious condiment are available for you to customize your taco. Tacos cost $3 each and are fairly filling. During COVID, all the staff here has worn masks and gloves appropriately, and the usually self serve salsas and taco toppings now come neatly prepackaged for more hygenic consumption. After you enter the store walk straight back to the taco counter. The al pastor & carnitas are my favorites, but they have many other options. You can dress your order up with salsas frescas and other toppings at the self serve station. The detriment is the thickness of the napkins and lack of a wash station to clean your hands after a juicy and delicious meal, so consider bringing your own clorox wipes to avoid making your car smell like a tacqueria for a week (though some of you may enjoy that). This little cafeteria in the back rivals full out taqueria restaurants. Although hidden in the back of the Chicago super mercado, the food quality is pretty good and the food is hot and ready. The carnitas tacos were amazing and the flavor was exactly what I was looking for. I'm pretty sure they used corn tortas which are my favorite over flour ones! The condiments from the salad bar really made the tacos click! The fried quesadilla is my highest rated of my meal. It is chock full of meat and cheese and you can stuff it with the condiments as well such as pico, salsa, and Jalapenos! The've got a great complimentary condiment bar too with shredded cabbage slaw, chopped cilantro, white onions, radish, spicy avocado salsa, spicy red salsa, pico de gallo, and more -- when you get your tacos, they will have just the meat on double corn tortillas ... so they will look sad until you dress them up w/ the condiments. And their tacos are just $1.99 each! The people working there are very nice, and your food is cooked to order. If you love their pico de gallo and spicy avocado salsa like I do -- you can purchase a container of their fresh salsas for about $2.49+. Supermercado Chicago, a.k.a. "Chicago Supermarket," is located in the Pinetree Plaza shopping center on Buford Highway. This is the same shopping center that has restaurants such as Chef Liu, Go Hyang House, Thien Thanh, Dim Sum Heaven, and Bo Bo Garden. There's also a furniture outlet and Dollar Tree here. I don't know why this supermarket is called Chicago Supermarket because it's a Mexican supermarket. The store is laid out like a typical American grocery store except it's smaller, with only six or so aisles of goods. Despite its size, Chicago Supermarket still manages to stock a little bit of everything. There's a produce section with fruits and vegetables, a carniceria (butcher chop), and a small taco stand. The produce and meats seem fresh enough. There's also a small refrigerated foods section, but no frozen foods -- mostly drinks, cold snacks, and refreshments. As expected, the aisles are packed with all sorts of Mexican brands. I noticed one special stand containing nothing but traditional medicinal herbs from Mexico. They supposedly help cure several types of common ailments. I wouldn't mind coming back here to try some of their tacos. The taco stand is located next to the carniceria. There's a small counter setup next to the meat windows where you can eat. The stand comes complete with a self-serve salsa and veggie (onion, cilantro, etc.) bar too. read more

Tucked into a shopping center with a Little Ceasers in the parking lot, and on the same side of the street as Hello Chicken (another delicious option in the area). There was plenty of parking in the lot on a Saturday afternoon at lunchtime. Walking into the supermarket I noticed the fresh baked goods case and ice cream counter on my left. There are some typical grocery store aisles with prepared foods and household goods. When you walk to the back you will see the taco stand on the left. Directly in front of it are some other delicious hot items in a case that are typical Mexican fare. I ordered a chorizo and carne asada taco, a queso quesadilla (fried corn tortilla with melty cheese), and a Mexican coke. My total came to $8, including tax. Originally, I planned to eat with my group but needed to change plans so I asked for a to-go box. My order was out in less than 10 minutes. I topped my tacos from the complimentary bar and chose fresh cabbage, onion, cilantro, and salsa verde. Every single thing was delicious and authentic! I would highly suggest coming to this place for a quick bite in the area to get some great quality tacos with big flavor. The quesadilla was absolutely delicious. I would recommend grabbing a napkin to soak up the oil from the freshly fried corn tortilla for the quesadilla, but it really was outstanding! The taqueria counter inside this unassuming grocery should be on everyone's Buford Highway must-try list. While it may not be the best tacos you've ever had.. this counter offers the best tortillas I've had in street-style tacos in the area. It's definitely worth trying out their take on the classic taco. Food -- most menu items are in the $1.99 to $6.99 range (tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tamales, etc). And while they don't offer nachos, they do offer other speciality items like empanadas, gorditas and tamales. There is also a "pay by the pound" option for all of their taco fillings, like barbacoa, carnitas, al pastor, etc. to host your own taco Tuesday. The tacos are where it's at in my opinion. The tortillas they use are corn based but have a texture and taste that's reminiscent of a flour-corn hybrid, likely because they grill the tortillas so that the edges get toasty and crispy. I've docked a star from the review only because their tacos are on the pricier side ($2.29 for carnitas, $2.99 for al pastor). I recommend the carnitas tacos if you're a pork fan. The al pastor was also good, but as you're probably already aware, al pastor is always super oily and greasy. I also highly recommend the chicken burrito ($6.99) and pork tamales ($1.99). Service and ambience -- I was here at around 4pm on a weekend day and there was no line. Service was pretty fast, there is a cash register near the food counter in the back that you place your order at. There's also a small condiments bar with salsas, shredded cabbage, cilantro, jalapeños, and diced onions next to the register. There's limited counter seating available. I took my order to-go, and everything was still hot and fresh when I got home. The tacos are little pricier for what you're getting, relative to other taquerias in the area. We went to this place because we heard about the hype of the tacos and honestly expectations were exceeded. I am so into hole in the wall taco shops. The staff was very nice and food was made right in front of us fresh. I love lengua tacos and they were so delicious. I also got chicken and carne asada which were also great, but lengua is my all time favorite. They have a place to add all of your fixins, but be careful, because my fiancé dumped salsa on all three tacos without realizing how hot the salsa was and took away from the taste! It has the loud mariochey music blairing over the home speakers on the wall the floors look unkempt, and there is not a gringo in sight. Walking to the back of the market one will find a counter. I am sure I have messed up the procedure every time I go there, but I just order from whoever seems to understand my gringonized Spanish. On this particular day I brought one of my past clients who is a little more opened minded. I ordered for us in my bad Spanish. Dos carne asada tacos (which was amazing) Lenguina taco, (which is beef tongue that was simmered in spices for several hours and just melts in your mouth) a pollo tamale (which normally I don't like but they make theirs in a style that is more traditional to the coast, which is done wrapped in banana leaves and has just the right amount of spice), and finally there Quesadilla with carne asada (in the words of the locals increíble). I also ordered mexican coke which has cane sugar instead of corn syrup and a bottle of water. I talked to the Mexican lady Rosa who prepared our meal, and she told me everything was made in house including the tortias. The grand total for this feast was $13.99. This place is in Doraville. It's next to a furniture store and Dollar Tree. When you walk in it looks like a market but you can see the line of people in the rear. Everyone was smiling and the food smelled great. My wife and I ordered one chicken taco and one carne asada taco. We also got a chicken burrito. Let me just say the food was delicious!! They packed it with a ton of chicken. The rice and cheese complimented it very well. The meat is tender and not overcooked. The salsa was also good. My wife enjoyed it as well. This place used to have the best tacos around but since the guys who used to make them moved back to Mexico (we asked) they are extremely lackluster, we dont even come here for tacos anymore. However they grind corn and make fresh masa here! You can buy it by the pound add a little water and make homemade tortillas, sopes, tlacoyos, or whatever else you want. It's really cheap and once you try them you will never go back to packaged tortillas. We often order pans of carnitas, rice, and beans for parties. The carnitas are amazing!! They come with the skin and are extremely tender the carnitas are a huge hit every time we serve them. We got a pan of those, rice and beans for $125 enough to feed 25+ with leftovers. We also come here for avocados because they are always ripe and cheaper than the supermarket. If you are looking for any authentic Mexican spices or herbs I would definitely come here. read more

Sublime My favorite taco spot inside the perimeter. The tacos are cheap, delicious, and hard to beat. It's a strange supermarket where you have to travel to the back to get their menu items, but it is very well worth it. I highly recommend tacos and the Oaxacan tamales. Great food counter/restaurant in the back of the store. We've been here a few times when craving authentic simple tacos. There is no menu, so you look at what is in the glass case and ask the lady behind the counter to explain if you're unsure of certain items. Her English is great and she is super helpful, as is everyone who works there. After you place your order, sit down and pay after you are done eating. We ordered 4 pork tacos, 2 asada tacos, 2 cheese empanadas, crunchy chicharrón and coke for around $15. There is a self serve salsa bar with some veggies. Everything was fresh and delicious. The tortillas are made fresh and many were buying their masa dough to press at home. Also the meat case looked and smelled very fresh with good prices. An easily accessible little Hispanic supermarket. Since it's about a mile from my house this is my go-to drop-by-for-a-few-things supermarket. They have a carnicería in the back and also sell fresh masa for tortillas AND one of the only places I know that sells masa preparada for tamales. It has a little taqueria with some counter seating, nothing fancy, with a menu of tacos, burritos, tortas, flautas, tamales, sopes, etc. The ladies making the food are very nice. Food is good, not the best I've had, but better than some of the nearby Mexican restaurants IMO. There is one thing that's odd to me though.. they don't cook the food in their kitchen under a hood, but instead cook it on a griddle in the store which smells up the whole side of the store and makes it quite smoky and stinks up your clothes. read more

A surprising find tucked into the Chicago Supermarket on Buford Highway. The prices are great and the food is authentic. I have had their tacos and I really enjoyed them. This is also a great spot to get pozole. The only reason I reduced a star is the food is extremely greasy. If you have a sensitive stomach I would not recommend. The prices for meats here are excellent. While I usually shop at the BHWY Farmers Market. This place is so close and prices for most meats are better. They have a limited selection of produce, but some interesting choices. Mostly Mexican specialties to be found here. The dining counter is in the right rear of the store. Jewell at 102 W. Division.. This is without a doubt the worst new store(2 years) ever. They lack shelve space, signage but most important the dumbest clerks behind the Deli Counter. One would think the would know what 3/4th of a pound is... not there. I asked the clerk and repeated 3 times, and she gave me 1/3rd. To add insult to buying there. They have never used the number system, yet today one of the clerks yells out next number and the last person to arrive was waited on. In the 23 years I lived in the neighborhood and including the store at 400 W. Division they have made hundreds of mistakes, and not one in my favorite yet. This place has the best Mexican food that I have ever had. First of all it is literally a supermarket/convenience store with a food counter in the back. I went on a Tuesday for lunch and there were only a couple of other people eating at the counter. I ordered a red tamale, a green tamale and the cabeza and al pastor tacos. The tamales were big and really flavorful. The taco al pastor was incredible as well, BUT the taco cabeza was the star of the show. The meat was tender and flavorful and generally out of this world. The place has a little bar full of all the salsas/accoutrements you could want and it is SO CHEAP. Two tacos, two tamales and a soda came out to about 9$. I was previously a huge fan EL Ray Del Taco and the Plaza Fiesta food court but Supermercado Chicago blows them both out of the water.
