Lunch at Antiguo Lobo in downtown Chamblee turned out to be the perfect little lunch date. From the moment I walked in, I was immediately seated--always a great start. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, but the weather was way too beautiful not to enjoy the patio. Service was quick and attentive. My server brought out warm chips and salsa right away--fresh, flavorful, and definitely a highlight while waiting for my meal. For lunch, I ordered the pollo lunch special, which came with Mexican rice and a generous portion of salad alongside well-seasoned, tender chicken. Everything was satisfying and well-portioned without feeling too heavy for midday. To top it off, I had a Mandarin Jarritos, which was the perfect refreshing touch. Me and my wife stopped in Antiguo Lobo for lunch one day while we were exploring DT Chamblee. It was on a Sunday, so wasn't too packed at all. It was around 4 in the afternoon. We were seated immediately upon arrival. Me and my wife didn't want to eat too heavy, as it was Superbowl Sunday, and we were going to eat again later. Some chips and salsa were brought to the table. Chips were good! Seasoned nicely and the salsa tasted fresh too. We got the esquite to start with as well. We love when it's off the cob! We loved it! A good amount too. My wife got the tostada and I got the chicken tacos. Both were very flavorful! We had some of the tostada left over too, so we took home with us. Everything else we finished though! We also got a drink each. I got a spicy margarita, and my wife got a skinny margarita. My spicy one was GOOOOD! A perfect balance of sour and spicy! My birthday also happened to fall on this day too, so my wife told them, and our server brought us two complimentary shots. He said they were pineapple flavored. They were really good!! A real unique kind of flavor. Our server, Dakota, was great! He was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. He was constantly checking on us too, which was great! He was efficient! Antiguo Lobo is pretty decently sized inside. They have a big bar inside with quite a few stools. A bunch of tables inside AND outside too. We would've sat outside if we got there a little earlier, but it was starting to get a little cold when we arrived, so we sat inside. FIRST OF ALL - GREAT SERVICE I am glad I went to this spot instead of where I was planning to go. Decor was festive and true to the zest and spice of the food. Casual indoor and outdoor seating. I sat at the bar. Several TVs. Food came out pretty quickly, but what I can't stop raving about was the salsa. I have NEVER tasted such thing in my life. I wasn't expecting the chunky pieces, the flavor was top notch. I would go back just for the salsa. The waiter could tell how much I was enjoying it and brought another complimentary salsa. Then my salad came. Now the dressing was citrusy, but I enjoyed it. Chicken may have been slightly over cooked but it was good. The cocktail I had was tequila and passion fruit and some other stuff. This was an adhoc lunch spot for my work crew this week. Very mixed reviews around the table. Average=3* Two of us order the ship tacos. 2/5 at best. They were greasy, floppy, and extremely under seasoned. We both asked for jalapeño to give it a little more kick and were up-charged for a tablespoon of chopped canned jalapeños that didn't kick at all. The shrimp salad and burrito rated 4/5. I was also told that their drink selection and bar variety brought one of the group up to a 5/5 on the drinks alone. It's a small, but cute place. Service was so-so. What a great place for a good lunch. The Carnitas Taco Plate was excellent. The side of frijoles charros beans were great, too. Wife's chicken soup was very good. Two other couples really enjoyed their meals and I have to say, they have salsa that is in the Top 5 of all the salsa's I've ever had......and I've had hundreds. Excellent salsa! And great service. The drinks and nachos were the highlight of our dinner haha. We killed those nachos in 5 mins probably one of the best nachos we've had in a while. Margaritas were so yummy perfect balance however the enchiladas sauce was a bit on the sour side and the quesadillas were veg but lacking flavor. I also got charged for every modification I made from chicken to veg not sure why but also wasn't informed of this. We also got tres leches at the end and that hit the spot as well. Overpriced with tiny portions and slow service. At $5 a taco, I expected something decent but instead got dry, flavorless fillings and tiny portions. The fish taco came with a tough piece of fish and a few onions. The shrimp taco was a mush of onions and mushrooms and no shrimp in sight. Both were bland and dry, with no sauce or lime provided, even though others at our table got them. I asked one of the servers for lime he nodded, never came back, and I was still charged 50 cents for a single slice. I had a good experience at Antiguo Lobo Mexicano & Agave Bar in downtown Chamblee. Simply put, this place has good food, good drinks, good service, and a fun vibe. Antiguo Lobo opened in July 2021. It's from the same family behind a bunch of Mexican restaurants in metro Atlanta over the past several decades including the Monterrey and El Ranchero restaurants. Antiguo Lobo is Spanish for ancient wolf. The restaurant doesn't have dedicated parking. My friends and I parked for free on the street. A couple of us parked around the corner on Chamblee Dunwoody Way. Another parked on Peachtree Road. The Southbound lot across the street is off-limits to Antiguo customers. This place is popular. I don't think they generally take reservations. It's first come, first served. However, during our visit, I saw them combine two tables in the back and put "Reserved" signs on them. Maybe you can make a reservation if you have a large group. The tables are small here. We visited on a Thursday night for dinner. It was busy and at one point, the dining room was completely packed. The atmosphere was fun and lively. It was loud, but not too loud. This isn't a big place. The bar and dining room are colorfully decorated with neat artwork and fixtures and cool ambient lighting. To me, it's a well-done, modern version of a casual Mexican restaurant. The food and drink menus offered a nice variety while at the same time were relatively streamlined. Along with an assortment of tacos and burritos, Antiguo also featured small and large plates with items such as Esquites (Mexican street corn, $9) and Cochinita (pibil, Yucatan-style slow-roasted pork, $18). Drinks included cocktails (margaritas, mostly $9-12 each) and beer. $10-13 lunch specials are available Monday-Friday, 11:30am-2:30pm. Three of us split an order of the Steak Nachos ($14) and the Molcajete El Monstruo ($40) and it was more than enough food. The portion sizes were large and filling. The Steak Nachos were delicious. You can ask for the steak to be cooked to a certain temperature. We asked for our steak to be rarer because the last time one of my friends had this dish, the steak was too well-done and tough for their liking. It turned out great. The strips of steak were savory and tender. There was plenty of steak along with queso, guac, crema, pico de gallo, lettuce, and tomato. Overall, this dish was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The Molcajete El Monstruo was perfect for sharing. I've ordered molcajetes at various Mexican restaurants over the years. They're all a little different. What made Antiguo's molcajete unique to me was its relatively-compact presentation (but still, a lot of food) and the large amount of tomatillo cream salsa in the molcajete itself (it looked like a soup). Maybe the compact presentation is due to Antiguo's smaller table sizes. I'm used to molcajete spreads taking up a lot more room. Antiguo's molcajete came with strips of steak, grilled chicken, and grilled queso fresco plus grilled shrimp and slices of tomato draped around the edges of the molcajete. Corn tortillas, wrapped in foil, were underneath the molcajete with a plate of rice, refried black beans, and chorizo on the side. This dish also came with green onion and nopal (cactus). Everything was delicious. Like the steak that came with the nachos, the molcajete steak was tender. The chicken could've been more tender, but it wasn't bad. I think they used breast. Decent smoky flavor. The tomatillo cream salsa went well on everything. My favorite part was the chorizo (flavorful) and I also really enjoyed the rice and beans (appetizing). Overall, this was just a solid-quality molcajete. One thing they could do is throw in more tortillas with the molcajete. I think there were only four. We went through them quickly and had to order more ($2.50, I believe for four as well). You have the choice of corn or flour. We ordered more corn. The complimentary chips and salsa were really good. They have a refreshing and mild-tasting salsa that's just the right balance of chunky and runny. The chips were fresh and medium thickness, so not too hard and crunchy and not too delicate either. I ordered a house margarita, La Loba ($9), and I loved it. It was nice and strong, but it didn't taste that way. It was ice cold, refreshing, and hit the spot. La Loba is made with el Jimador Tequila, lime, agave, and Combier liqueur with a Colima Sea Salt rim. It was a really tasty margarita and I was very happy with it. One of my buddies got a Dos Esquis Ambar Especial draft beer ($6). When we visited, Antiguo had six beers on draft including a couple local brews from Contrast Artisan Ales (Chamblee) and Tucker Brewing Company. Service was great. Our server was Jimena and she was terrific. So was everyone else we interacted with. One of the staff noticed my friend didn't have a place to put her purse and my rain jacket. Antiguo has been one of my go to spots when I don't have time to cook. It's majority whole foods depending on what you order, and it's tasty. My husband had ordered a second beer and it had been a hot minute since we saw our waitress. We were able to flag her down and she told us that they didn't have anymore. So we just didn't get a second beer. If you're going on a Friday night-get there early. They have parking in the back but it's extremely limited. So the tacos here were pretty good, I am 101% going to come back. I've been on a regular day, and then I came back on a Tuesday. Tuesday was so worth it! The tacos are street taco size, but they are awesome. Well at least, I enjoy them. The spot is decently sized, but if you go around the back there's a patio that shares a bunch of the establishments that you can sit at. Has a TV, has a bunch of picnic tables, enough seats if you want to sit outside. They have a full bar, a lot of tequila obviously lol. They have some outside sitting in the front, only a few seats there, but if it's a nice day it's worth it I believe. Street parking is pretty much the way to go so just keep that in mind. Birria ... These were super solid! The consome was Rich in flavorful, the tacos were cooked very well and had a soft crisp to them if that makes sense. Super flavorful! Octopus... These were okay, I really wouldn't order them again though. Had a little too much of the octopus flavor there, not what I expected but I had to give it a shot! Carnitas ... Thoroughly enjoyed them. Even though they were street taco size they were pretty median filled with flavor. Cochinita ... Not what you would expect, but they were good. I actually ordered another one while I was finishing the first one they were that good. This one's a pork based one so if you're not into that, probably don't want to do this. Chorizo ... The chorizo was really good. It was tangy and spicy and had a little bit of a bite to it. Not too much to where you want to enjoy it but just enough to know that they seasoned it very well. Picadillo... This one was pretty tasty as well. Look kind of weird, but it was beef that was season. Only difference between this and the regular tacos is the fact that it comes on a different shell. We've had this place on our list of places to try for a while. It's a nice location and atmosphere but that's about all it's got going for them. The food is missing so much flavor. The margaritas are weak AF. And everything is overpriced for the portions you get. My margarita was $11 and I did not taste any tequila at all in it. We also ordered the 2 taco specials with rice and beans and found out once we got our food that due to the fact we got the vegetarian one, which they said was more expensive than the meat ones, that we could not get the 2 sides that came with the meal, only 1, which is bullshit! It was $14 for 2 tacos and a small side of beans. WAY OVERPRICED! We will never be going back to this location again. Went here with some friends for dinner. Was my second time here. I came here a few months after they opened and they were wonderful- service, food, decor, music, vibe, drinks. I came here last week again with my friends and it was a total disappointment. First, we made reservations and was given a small high top table with stools that were extremely uncomfortable especially for someone over 40 years of age and in a spring dress. The table was extremely small for 3 people. The food was not good. My friends and I ordered tacos. My plate came out almost 15 minutes after my friends got their food even though we all ordered tacos. The tacos were boring, tasted nothing like they would from Mexico and had hardly nothing in them. One of the tacos I ordered was a Birria taco which obviously comes with a dipping sauce - naturally - the whole point of ordering a Birria taco (if you know real Mexican food - this would be understood). I was charged not only for the birria taco but an additional $6 for the dipping jus that is supposed to come with. The guacamole was not guacamole in my opinion - lacked flavor and had huge chunks on onion in it. I also ordered a shrimp taco which came without shrimp. I showed the waiter who gave me a replacement shrimp taco about 10 minutes after I had finished my food. My third taco was a steak taco. The beef was dried out and too hard to eat especially since it wasn't sliced properly to be inside a taco. We also didn't get any silverware at the table and had to hunt down a waiter to get some. In today's episode of overpriced mediocre Mexican food, is this place. Didn't plan on eating here, but was walking downtown Chamblee and wanted a margarita (had the el Melvin and it was pretty good). My husband and I walk in and waited at the host stand. We ask to sit outside, and he says just grab a table. I grab a table in the shade that hasn't been cleaned off yet. After 10 mins go by and we watch 2 servers attend to every table but ours, my husband finally grabs one and asks if we can put in an order. He says the other guy is our server. Other guy comes and says the first guy is our server. First guy ends up being our server. Couldn't help but notice we were also the only black table. Could have been a coincidence, but I doubt it. My experience at Antigua Lobo was disappointing. I went on a Thursday evening. It was packed and crazy loud inside, so we sat outside. Someone came over and brought us water after about 10 minutes. It took another 10 minutes or so for our waitress to come over to take our drink order. The bar was so backed up that we finished our app before our 1st round of margs made it to the table -- we ordered the "infused skinny" margs (cucumber and strawberry) which were delicious, but seemed like they had very little tequila in them and were basically juice. It took an hour to get our food and the tacos were truly pitiful (see the pics). Our server was nice - she was clearly doing her best - but it seems like the restaurant just sits waaay more tables than it has the capacity to serve, and the customer experience suffers as a result. Lovely ambiance and delicious food. Like, SERIOUSLY delicious. I had the Enchiladas de Cochinita, which I've been dreaming of ever since. My vegetarian partner had the hibiscus tacos; they were refreshingly different and quite tasty. And the drinks? Gorgeous. We tried the La Loba, El Mebin, and El Maracuyas; they were all perfectly strong, unique, and yummy. I'll admit that the service could use improvement, but I would never hold that against the kitchen. The esquite was a bit too mayo-heavy for my tastes, but that also contributed to it being a rich enough portion for two people. A great date night locale, which I never thought I'd say since graduating from Chamblee high lonnnnng before the area was hip. I highly recommend Anticuo Lobo and am looking forward to my next visit! If I could, I'd give this place 3.5 stars, but I'm gonna round up rather than down due to a nice atmosphere. Today was my second impression. Earlier, maybe a week ago, I came and tried three different tacos. Hibiscus, Birria, and Gobernador. I liked the Birria best and today I had a hankering for tacos, so made my way over for another serving. I found the hibiscus taco to be surprisingly tasty, and the Gobernador wasn't to my preference - very creamy, very melted cheese forward - but others might like it a lot. The meat itself of the Birria tacos is very tender, slow cooked brisket with a nice exterior char. I think my mistake the second time around is that I loaded it up with too many side items - beans, rice, salsa, cilantro, onions, lime - when perhaps a little bit of onions and cilantro and lime, just a little, would've been better. I will say that ordering individual tacos makes more sense. $4.50 per taco (mind still reeling from inflation) is better than $15 for what turned out to be 2 tacos and a lot of rice. That math doesn't math for me. You get decent gratis chips and salsa, including a refill for the salsa in its own little jar. Also a decent drink selection, though when I ordered a beer, they didn't bring me a water automatically, so now I've consumed more calories from a second beer (a choice, I know) rather than being hydrated for free. Finally got around to coming here. Let me just tell you to go ahead and order the guacamole. It wasn't your ordinary guac and it's so much better. It's fresh with small chopped up avocado pieces, fresh lime juice, pico de gallo and some cheese I don't know the name of. I wanted to lick the plate. The queso was a little on the runny side but still good (just add the jalapeños in it). Draft beer was cold. Service was great. I only wanted to leave a review so I could express how helpful and talented Barbra was as a server. The food here was as good as always, but I wouldn't have known how delicious the cuisine is here if Barbra didn't guide me to choices that fit my tastes buds.
