My truck had a "service" light on when I came today and the owner kindly told me to get it checked out first since it would not pass inspection. After reading Yelp reviews, I had my car smog checked at FIC SMOG last week. Boy, this was the best smog check experience I ever had! He was so courteous and professional. I was out in less than 20 min! Since I had another car for smog check, I went back there again today. I made an appointment and I arrived on time, although the place was pretty crowded today, he kept the original schedule and didn't make me wait to get started. I was out in 20 min again! Took my 2007 Honda Pilot for test. I had been there before without a problem. Came back 30 minutes later and was told by the manager/owner that the car had numerous failures. and needed repairs before it would pass. He stated that it was due to not having the valves adjusted at the 60K mile maintenance. I started my car and the 'check engine' light was ON. I told him the light was NOT on when I dropped it off. He said it was. He said take it to your favorite mechanic, if you don't have one I can recommend one for you. I will not mention the name of the shop but it was close by. I asked for an estimate for the valve adjustment. I was told I had to leave it overnight and that the cost would be minimum $480 for labor, plus parts. I used an OBD to check the problem with the engine. It read 'misfire on cyl 1-6' I erased the codes and took the car to another test station, on Hwy 101. It is owned by a female. I dropped the car off and came back 30 minutes later. She asked if I had done work on the car recently and I said I had. She said to drive the car 200 miles and let the computer reset and bring it back. Two days later I brought it back and it PASSED inspection. Two very serious problems with FIC and the owner. Number one - the car cannot and should not be tested if the 'check engine' light is on. He did, or said he did. Number two - a valve adjustment is NOT required at the 60K mile milestone. The test was performed in July 2017. read more

Finding this place is a bit tricky - the entrance is on El Camino Real, and there's a bunch of car service places in front of it, but you need to drive past those businesses and get yourself around back, then you can see it (the pics help). I had an appointment, got there a few minutes early and he was just filling out my paperwork so he'd be ready for me (don't see that level of service much, anywhere). I could wait in a little waiting room with AC and some magazines, or outside under a shade cover. He got the car all hooked up and on the machines, and then discovered there was an issue with my car - it's an overseas model and has had some servicing issues in the past, so that wasn't all that unexpected. He unhooked the car, explained to me what the issue was, and showed me what I needed to do to get it taken care of. And this was great: he didn't try to sell me a bunch of service I didn't need or refer me to his buddy. And - this was unexpected: no charge, just sent me on my way with some courteous chatter and helpful information. I don't need smog services too often, but this guy was trustworthy, courteous, timely and helpful, and will get all my business - and any I can send his way. read more
