I came to find out about LHUCA through attending the First Friday art trail events in the area…read more Technically, the event is named after this place and has the gallery as its central focal point. The idea being to come stroll through the gallery, then work your way out onto the cordoned off streets and check out local art vendors and handmade goods before settling on beers and live music or performances somewhere along the way. This gallery always has a perfect assortment of displays running the gamut between peculiar to practical. I've seen some incredible handmade pottery mugs for sale, and some bizarre installations of another form of pottery: the toilet. It is, nevertheless, wonderful to have such a place in little ol' Lubbock. There are some beautiful large art pieces that hang on the walls making up the majority of the contents. Paintings, photography, mosaics. All sorts of media. Some for sale, albeit often at quite high prices, and many marked "NFS", or "Not For Sale". There's a very tiny little shop selling remnants of older installations, as well as "extras" made by some of the artists. It's quaint. A front desk has flyers and cards for the current and future exhibits. My favorite, they also have a pile of free stickers with the center name on them. Even in a time when retailers and restaurants struggle to keep staff, they always have plenty of attendants working the gallery to answer questions and shout at you if you dare touch the art. That's commendable and makes the experience all the more whole. It's been 7 years between the latest review and mine, but the place is still kickin' and worth visitin'!

Where do I want to go as my first stop during the first Friday art trail?…read more THE LHUCA OF COURSE. This building is one of my top favorite structures in Lubbock. It is very spacious and holds so many art appreciators all at once. It is the hub of the first friday art trail that happens every first friday of the month 6pm-9pm rain or shine! It is also open throughout the week to visit. During the first friday art trail they also serve beer and wine for a small cost. The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts is an amazing addition to the sometimes known as boring Lubbock, Tx. It keeps the city excited about up and coming artists and their work. I love that our City has such an amazing establishment to enrich the locals.

If you are just looking for something to do while in Lubbock, it will depend on whether or not it is for you. It is definitely deep on windmills and history. I found it interesting but will say it didn't hold my attention the way I expect it would for some who really are intrigued by how small changes across history really add up. They have a cool gift shop and sell prints by local photographers at the end which definitely have great gift potential!

LOCATION/AMBIANCE The American Windmill Museum is located in the northeast part of Lubbock, TX with close access to Interstate 25 and Loop 289. As you approach the museum grounds, you'll see the fenced in area with a slew of outdoor windmills of all generations. The building in which you can schedule a group tour of 6 or more or self-tour is huge... however, it is broken into sections: two windmill areas, model train displays, miniature houses, millstone collection, gift shop, a counter weight display, and plus their event room has an amazing wrap-around mural. LITTLE YELPER'S CLUB My 8 & 9-year-olds loved the "Legacy of the Wind" seek and find. We received a few handouts soon after purchasing our tour tickets. Brochures and the like. One was a list of over 30 items to find on the mural in their special events room. Not only did this entertain them for 20 minutes, but it also was puzzle-like & expanded their vocabulary with words like "privies" & "man witching for water. SERVICE The lady at the ticket counter and the guy in gift shop were personable and helpful. MY FAVORITE PART... The windmills! NOT SO FAVORITE PART... Not knowing until recently about this place. TIPS + Closed Sunday & Monday. + Cash or card is accepted for the entry fee. + As of 12/29/2022, adult tickets were $7.50. Children 5 to 12 years-old were $5. Under 5 free, $6.00 for seniors 60+ and veterans, & $20.00 for a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 children).

Parking was free, ample, and just across the street. Will call was super quick. The Seminole native was absolutely a joy to watch. While she was a bit difficult to hear through their sound system between songs there in the Helen Devitt Jones Theater, her stories we did hear made us laugh hard and helped us realize how cowboy she really is. The modern facility had a spiral staircase just inside the main entrance plus their logo that both look like tornadoes. My significant other & I loved our seats ($88.45 apiece after fees & taxes) at Right Orchestra Loose, Row V, Seats 47 & 48. No one in front of us. No one behind us. We could scoot our chairs closer together - not like most of the theater's seats. During our event, it was required to purchase a reusable, refillable plastic commemorative Buddy sip cup that can be brought to other events for any beverage. The cup was $3. My single shot of Crown Royal whiskey with Coke was $10 (not including the $3 required cup). The staff members were all pleasant to deal with & mostly quick to eliminate nuisances. TIP Clear bag policy only.
