I'm so dissapointed in my recent experience going to this salon. I have been coming here for years,…read moreand just recently the girl that used to cut my hair left. The front concierge left as well, and now there are new staff members. For one, the main person that is and should be the first impression to the salon - the front concierge manager, Dawn - is completely imposing, rude and unprofessional. Then the rest of the staff seems pleasant, but definetly made to feel rushed and non cared for. Here are a few reasons to back of my statement: To put things under perspective, for this visit I had just requested a simple haircut & blowdry. Nothing else. 1. To start, I had multiple text notifications from the salon sending me reminders that I had an appointment. I showed up on time, and I was told otherwise - that I was not showing up on the system nor did I have an appointment. I was ready to leave since Dawn did not provide a resolution or an apology for the salon's confusion until a stylist passed by and took me in. 2. When I was brought in, I was just asked "what do you want?", no proper consultation and all was completely rushed. Then, I was told my hair was clean so I didnt "need" a proper wash (per the package description). So no wash, cut dry and then blow dry quickly without any product to protect my hair from heat damage nor was given the option to request this is usually my preference. 3. At the end, I was told the total for this 15-20 minute service was $80+, I had stated my experience and there was not a care in the world from Dawn, her response was " the standard fee for blowout and haircut is $80". I felt this was pretty high and not appropriate for the bad customer experience I had, but I still paid and left the salon. I went back and looked at the list prices displayed on Substance's salon's website. Here's what it states: - Under Women's Menu: "Classic Cut + Blowdry - Shampoo & conditioner, Haircut & Blowdry : $55-65" - Under "Salon Menu" ' "women's haircuts Level 1 = $69, Level 2 = $74, Level 3= $80, Level 4=$84. I was NOT provided a reason to the fact I was being charge for level 3, the answer provided was "this is a standard fee". Which clearly, what is written on the website does NOT support this statement. 4. Oh! To top it off, as I was paying without asking for what had happened - Dawn (instead of apologizing for the confusion and the MESS of a customer service experience) began speaking and said she didn't know what had happened and imposed that maybe I had done something wrong! IT'S ALL IN WRITING AND THE APPOINMENT WAS SET THROUGH THE TEXT REMINDERS THAT THE SALON PROVIDES. The whole experience was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND I WILL NOT BE RETURNING nor recommending this place to anyone in the Rutherford area!! It's quite sad, because this used to be my home salon and I loved all the staff and how cared for I felt everytime. I would always be listened to completely, cared for and consulted, never rushed and kicked out the door like today! Now I have no choice but to find another salon that cares for their clientelle, respects, consults and treats each individual as top priority.

I have to preface by saying this is all done by the same stylist for the same service, a twisty blow-out. 1. First appointment, no charge based on a Facebook post looking for volunteers. 2. Second appointment was half off since I booked during my first session, $11. 3. Third appointment, the stylist is now level 1, so my visit was $31. 4. Fourth appointment, I ask her if she can pin my curls as she does them and then release them at the end. She says yes, cool. I go to pay, $41....? The receptionist says it's because I got my hair pinned. Okay, but no one told me there was an upcharge. I'm irritated but pay and decide I'm not coming back ever due to this. 5. Now, on Friday, 2.23, I decide that morning I needed a blowout because it's my birthday, and the only place that could get me in was here,so I booked it. I tell my new friend my plans and lo and behold, not only does she also go to this salon but gets blowouts regularly by the same girl. I tell her about the $10 upcharge for the pins, and she's shocked! She tells me she never gets charged and leaves with the pins! Ok, so now I'm going with this info in my back pocket. I go in and ask for the same blowout. The girl herself this time offers to pin the hair in the crown area for added volume with NO mention of an upcharge. I tell her, you know what, can you pin the whole thing actually. And she says, oh, that's a $10 upcharge. And I immediately tell her why, you don't charge my friend and literally pull out the text convo to show her. She stutters and says, oh she didn't pay last time? No, she's NEVER paid the extra charge I tell her. Then she suddenly decides that in a whole 'professional' salon, she doesn't have enough pins to pin my whole head. COME ON! What a joke. So I'm thinking it's my birthday (I told her this too) I'm not stressing, I don't have time, fine just pin the crown. She finishes my hair and we go up to pay. She says $41!! I'm sorry, what? I said I'm not paying the $10 upcharge for the pins. Now, she says, oh no it's not the pins, it's your long, thick hair. I'm like dumbfounded. My hair has been this length always and she has never said anything before. I'm in shock at this point, she really swindled me into paying that extra $10 like she initially wanted to. Again it's my birthday, I have a dinner to get to. My fault, but I decided to pay with cash, so now I have no record and no way to dispute with my bank. And what's even more mind-blowing, my same friend went again today, AND NO EXTRA CHARGES! Are you kidding me? What scam is this place running? Are they pocketing the upcharge money? How ridiculous is this? Soo unprofessional.

I have been a loyal customer (for lashes) for 7 years…read more Friday I went in for lashes and a hair cut/style. The lash appointment wasn't the best because Jen kept leaving me on the table to go take care of other customers. After 2 hours it was finally my turn to get washed. I showed Richard the hair style I wanted- TWICE- and Jen spoke to him about it then asked how short I wanted my hair. That's when I got concerned because the hair style is for long hair, which I already have. My hair goes past my mid back. I told her SEVERAL TIMES "Do not touch the length. I love my long hair" Richard starts cutting and then flips my hair past my shoulders and I see no hair..... it's all gone. Easily 5-6 inches chopped off. Jen smiles and said "We only took off an inch" I wanted to scream, cry, vomit- it took me so long to get my hair to the length I wanted it to be at and they ruined it. They ruined it the day before my baby shower. Which Jen knew was the very next day. I told her I didn't want the length touched and all she said was "It was necessary" just ADMIT that your husband messed up big time.
