This place is great! We stumbled upon it after lunch in Ferndale with a simple yelp search for beer nearby. The vibe is everything here - it has a relaxed chill environment, with great music, the place was buzzing but not rowdy, friendly staff, friendly people, great beer and great food! They have outdoor igloos and fire pits. Seemed dog friendly by the adorable pups licking my daughters giggling face. The dill on the fries is something I've never had before and I would consider myself a fry connoisseur. Order a basket, or 2 or 3. 1 basket was enough for 3 but if you order a sandwich they come with fries too. The Ferndale IPA was so flavorful, juicy, little to no bitterness, very drinkable and not filling, just a really freaking good beer. We literally went back the next day to get lunch to go because we loved it so much the afternoon before. My brother ordered a drip coffee, before we even sat at a table waiting he commented on how good it was at least 3 times so I had to try to for myself and ordered a cup - it was really really good. It's Ashe Coffee and they do Dooped Donuts here too. The mid morning scene was much "quieter" like people were working -solo or in a group- there are big picnic like tables or smaller high top tables to use. It was a Monday and it was full but not crowded, like people had plenty of space. My favorite part is the kid area for our toddler. It is partially closed off so I could stand in there while she played but knew she couldn't run free while my friends hung out on the other side of the ledge outside the kid area where we could keep our conversation going. They have coloring pages and crayons and little gadget fidget toys attached to the wall and little activity centers in the middle. It was such a great way for us to hang out and entertain our daughter so she didn't feel she was dragged along to another adult activity where I end up having constant anxiety. A part of me doesn't want to include this part in my review so that I can keep it a secret for myself lol We ordered Black Garlic Patty Melts, and Chicken Sandwiches. Like I mentioned previously they are served with their incredible fries. The patty melt was full of flavor and soooo juicy, even messy but in the best way. I had not realized that I have been here previously until I got out of the car. It was called something else at the time but I loved the outdoor area in the evenings. I needed this tag so decided to take the trip. Since covid, breweries have very limited hours so getting to them can be very challenging especially on week days. I was very happy to be able to get here and get my tags. Also they participate in hop passport so you get 50% off your first two drinks. Absolutely can't complain about that lol! I've been coming here (and to EMBC) since the beginning. The beer is OK and the food is thoroughly inconsistent. The major asset of Ferndale Project is that it's got a great patio and a great indoor space, so it's possible to enjoy regardless of what you order-- it's just often frustratingly mediocre. There is a bonus in the fact that there's basically a coffee shop built into the brewery itself. Which is open sometimes. The other day, we had a maple chicken sriracha sandwich, which comprised somewhat soggy (n.b. gooey) chicken that was neither sufficiently maple nor sriracha to make it distinguishable enough by either descriptor (also feeling like it wasn't real maple so I never know what to do with that). Also a strawberry salad that was supposedly arugula but was really just sort of wet romaine, a bit too heavy on the cheese and dressing and too light on everything else. Idk man throw some cromch in there. Anyway, as I said, it's a great atmosphere and the patio is great, the service is friendly (though we're still being asked to tip 20%+ without table service and with self-bussing?), it's just not quite there yet. read more

Stopped by on a Friday night to see what was new in the neighborhood. While the place was packed at 8pm, by the time we left a little after 9, there were many seats open. You order at the bar and seat yourself. We had the tofu sandwich, chicken wings, and a pineapple cider. The tofu sandwich was the best item, although the accompanying pita chips were pretty much chip-shaped rocks. Chicken wings were also good and juicy. This was our first time and we will definitely be back! The ambiance is relaxing and the food is scrumptious. I had the Nashville Hot Tofu which is a sandwich that comes with fries and a nice helping of a pickle. My husband had the jumbo wings with miso ranch on the side. Meet some people here for drinks and food. The layout is nice and open! You kinda just make it work for yourself from what I could see. You go in to a counter to order drink and food, but didn't see anyone really bussing so I guess clean up yourself too? We ordered a few beers and relaxed for a few. Which both bartenders working don't know how to pour? At about $9 a glass I'd expect that to be damn near full not a solid inch to two inches of foam. Also leaving the rest of the can my husband ordered for his beer on the counter instead of waiting for the foam to go down.... Just advice if you tip the glass a bit it helps. Decided what we wanted to order and was told at 7:30pm ish on a Friday they were out of dough...... that's the WHOLE menu except the watermelon salad. Not at all what I was wanting so we finished with friends and went else where to eat and drink. This is walking distance from our house and we used to go every weekend. It was the only safe place with great outdoor seating during the pandemic. They really listened to their staff on protocols and I felt very safe going with our toddler. We haven't been back for the whole summer because it's been too hot and their menu change wasn't enticing. HOWEVER, they listened to their customers and recently unveiled a whole new menu with favorites from their original and Axle menu. PLUS they added real brunch food!!! We went for Sunday brunch and had the best French toast and breakfast burrito ever. So glad they have this option again. I love going there in the morning with our little one to get a coffee and now they have more than just bagels and donuts. The lunch/dinner menu also looks great and can't wait to try it out. Only negative was the espresso machine was out, the cold brew was sour, and I felt bad for the one person behind the counter working as the line kept building at 10am. So I've bought a few beer packs before that I thought were just okay. The chocolate peanut butter stout was alittle thick and the margarita gose was scrunch your nose sour! But this review is based on my visit the other day! I was going to have a flight but you couldn't try everything because some were out of cans! So I finally found 5 I could sample then I went to pay! It was a $19 flight! I was actually shocked by this! And truthfully I didn't love any of the beers.. They were drinkable and that's about it! My friend ordered the avocado toast which she said was amazing!! Then ordered the Berry Berry bamboozie! It was literally bubbling the entire time and she couldn't even drink it! I've been here many times but today was not a great experience. The person taking my order looked at me like I had three heads when I asked what other drinks they had besides coffee and beer. I don't think that's a strange question normally, but especially if your menu doesn't list all the drinks and also it was 1pm, not really prime coffee or beer time. The food is usually so good, so I was super bummed when it was barely mediocre today. The kids grilled cheese was just some stale, dry, over toasted bread with one slice of barely melted American cheese. The veggie sandwich with tofu was tiny, and missing the giardineira and most of the tofu. Nobody asks if your food is okay after it comes out, and I was there with my 3 year old, so I wasn't going to hunt someone down to complain or wait another 20 minutes for a new order anyway. It also wouldn't hurt to wipe down your counters where the water and condiments are, and maybe vacuum the kids area? read more

This place is great for a casual get together over some craft/local beers and some great bites. By the purveyors of the Eastern Market Brewing Company, if you're a member with EMBC then your membership perks also apply here. I do love that their patio is also pup friendly (as long as your pup is friendly too) and they have ample indoor seating as well. I went yesterday for the first time with a few friends who are regulars. I can see why they go regularly, it's just so welcoming! And my burger and fries were surprisingly tasty! The fries are hand cut and well seasoned and my burger was generous and juicy, not a wimpy patty with sad lettuce...this one hit the spot. I washed that all down with a Butterfly Water, a really beautiful seltzer water that is tinged purple and made butterfly pea flower, lemongrass and lavender. Super refreshing and drinkable. For a Thursday night, It wasn't too busy and they had March Madness/the MSU basketball game going - there were definitely some Spartans in there which I loved. They do offer vegetarian and vegan friendly options too. While more places are offering these options, not all of them make it tasty. My friend who tends to lean vegetarian loves their Chick-Faux-Let Sammy and says it's delicious. I forgot to take a picture but it looked great! While the parking lot is smaller (to accommodate the outdoor seating area), the street parking is ample. Not the best selection of beers unless you like sours & NEIPA. I do like New England IPAs, but not to drink all night. They did have a Kolsh & a "stout" on tap that looked like an amber beer in color & tasted sweet, malty, & light -not like a traditional stout. There was no B indoor seating at the moment. Masks were required, even for those that are vaccinated. Our "bartender" wore a mask, but there was another bartender who didn't have a mask on...I was confused. Why could he go maskless, but not the public if vaccinated? We also ordered a root beer & I can only imagine it was made in house because it smelled like root beer, but didn't taste like it at all. That was the only NA drink at the time. We came with out 2 children (9, 7). The mushroom quesadilla was extremely oily, had an unpleasant tasting mixture on it and barely any cheese. I have been here about 4 or 5 times now, and I can say that I wasn't that impressed at first, but I have grown to really, really like this place. The Beer - this is a brewery so beer is obvs important. The beer is FANTASTIC. However, I am a lambic and a sour lover, which I find most of their beers are. I know they have a few stouts and ipas but their sours are where they really shine. Most are fruit heavy and absolutely delicious. You can also take home their beers too, which is a great thing. I wish there was more clarity on what beers you can buy though. The bartenders make it seem like you are inconvenience them if you ask for beer to buy for home. The Food - I feel like brewery food is either hit or miss, but wow this place didn't need to go so hard. Simply put, the food is fantastic. They have a ton of vegetarian options as well, which is what I normally go for. Their sweet and smoky salsa is weird but out of this world good. They also have some of my favorite guacamole in the area! One thing to note, if you go on Taco Tuesday, be aware that you can ONLY get tacos -- nothing else off their menu. I was super bummed when I was looking forward to a sandwich but was only able to get tacos. Don't get me wrong, their tacos are super great, but it's a little odd that you would take away half of your menu. The atmosphere - Totally fine. This is kid and dog friendly. Personally, I do not love kids running around d when there is alcohol around but to each their own. If you also don't live for that, be warned. This place can also get busy super fast. I normally get there right around their dinner opening, and it's almost always packed within 30 or so minutes. It never FEELS packed outside though, which is doable. Overall, I really dig this place. I love Ferndale Project and I do not even drink beer. My first visit was during the summer for dinner on their patio. They have a few options, alcohol and non, that are not beer, though my friend loved the beer she ordered. The food was great, I had soba noodle salad and my friend has a jalapeño caesar salad. The menu is short and seems to change often. The only issue I had was ordering the pizza was confusing, we were told we had to order it to go, I think this was because you had to order it early as it takes some time to make. I've stopped back in the winter to get Tov Bagels and coffee. Their gingerbread latte (they offer oat milk) is the best coffee I've had in the area. Really amazing, even better with the great bagels. I was surprised to see their patio was still open, they added several small wood fires and it's a solid space. Cool, friendly staff, cool space and good products! read more

I'm loving Ferndale Project! Their beer is super tasty and pickup and delivery are a cinch. I wanted to check them out earlier when they first opened but then Corona happened. Lucky for me, Ferndale Project is doing amazing things during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can order through their website which directs you to Wingit delivery. You can order beer by the single can or 4-packs, pizza, bakery treats, whole bean coffee, and merchandise like glassware and apparel. Pickup is free and if you order after 8 pm, your order will be ready the next day by 12:15 pm. I have also ordered the same day around 2 pm and my order was ready by 5:30 pm. You can mark a box to request curbside pickup. Once you arrive, there are about five parking spots. Call the number listed on the spot, give your name and spot number and they'll bring your beer out to your trunk and check your ID through the glass window of your car. Completely contactless and safe pickup during the pandemic. You can also have your order delivered. Delivery has a $5 charge. They'll leave your order on your porch and check your ID from a distance, so again contactless and safe. They deliver to all of Detroit. Occasionally they go a further radius, for example lately they took delivery orders to Ann Arbor for a day. They are open daily 12-8 pm. Ferndale Project used to be Axle Brewing but when Axle went under Eastern Market Brewing Company bought them. I've always loved EMBC's beer so it's no surprise that Ferndale Project's beer is equally delicious! I've ordered and done pickup 3 times during the COVID-19 shut-in because every time I look Ferndale Project is coming out with a new delicious beer. My first pickup, I ordered the Raspberry Gose, and Some More Stout, then the Margarita Gose and Blackberry Cardigan, and then they came out with the Peanut Butter Volcano beer and I had to have it too! Lol. The Raspberry Gose, was very good, brewed with red raspberries and pink Himilayan sea salt, bright red in color with a nice tart flavor but not overly sour. I love the Some More s'mores stout! It was done very well with nice chocolatey flavor with graham cracker and marshmallow notes too. I've tried some other s'mores stouts that were too acidic and had a weird aftertaste but this one nailed it and was really good. The Margarita Gose was really good, super refreshing beer! It has really nice citrus flavors, brewed with lemons, limes, oranges and Himilayan sea salt. I really liked the orange flavor in this beer. The Blackberry Cardigan was very tasty too. They also have some beers from EMBC like Detroit Diesel and Elephant Juice. I had the Idle Hands cherry sour, Little Bird pale ale, and Detroit Diesel, a dark chocolate nitro stout and all were great! I haven't tried a beer that I didn't like from here. They were all really good! Ferndale Project just came out with the Peanut Butter Volcano beer over the weekend, which was inspired by Detroit Cookie Company's Peanut Butter Volcano cookie, a peanut butter cookie topped with a heaping mountain of peanut buttery gooey goodness and then topped with chocolate and graham cracker crumbs! You can purchase the beer by the can or 4-pack and when you purchase it, there's a box you can check to add on Detroit Cookie Company's cookie for just $3. OMG! Beer and cookies?!? What could be better!?! The beer was very dark and delicious and boozy at 9.5% ABV. They were the perfect pairing and complimented each other well. The cookie was really good and the beer was just as delicious! Ferndale Project's beer rotates and they sell out of certain varieties pretty quickly so if you see something you like, I suggest ordering it quickly before it sells out. Most beers are around $7 a can or $21 for a four pack. A few beers like the Little Bird were $5 a can. They also have Detroit Style pizza. They offer pizzas in three flavors each day, sauce and cheese, vegetarian, and specialty. The specialty pizza changes every couple of days and has featured items such as BBQ pulled pork, kimchi, foie gras, fried chicken, and Spanish chorizo. The vegetarian is usually a vegetarian spin on the specialty pizza. You can order a pizza and 4-pack of beer for $30. Ferndale Project also has a cafe, Ashes Supply Co and makes coffee, lattes, cold brew and bakery treats. They have giant cinnamon rolls for $4.50 and smorgasbord brownies with marshmallows and pretzels for $3.75. They also have ice cream and a massive ice cream cookie sandwich. They also have chocolate chip and ginger snap cookies for $2.75 and you can order all of the bakery treats through the Wingit site for pickup or delivery, as well as bags of whole bean and ground coffee. Ferndale Project also recently has setup a drive-through market each morning from 9 am to noon where you can order hot brewed coffee and lattes, breakfast sandwiches, and fresh produce. I was able to ride my bicycle here with a friend to check out this newer in town brewery. They have a beautifully socially distanced patio and lawn area for customers. Electronic menu instructions at table side. You order drinks in side or food for it to be delivered outside. There are no tasters currently available. Small food offerings are available. There are many beer choices and it was hard to pick one (I really wanted to do a tasting). Service was quick and friendly. Most people were following "traffic" rules and fortunately not too busy inside. Beers were a bit high at around $17 plus tax and tip for two tulip glasses (high abv) beers. I'm long overdue for writing a review about the Ferndale Project, but we just moved to the area and are so happy and relieved that they came into the old Axel space quickly. Went to the grand opening for beer, had coffee at the soft opening before that, food and drinks were always great. But we really have to hand it to them in this post-covid-19 environment. They have rebranded (somewhat) into a coffee, beer, produce and pizza place, and on a near weekly basis they save us with a delicious new pizza concoction, or maybe strawberries, or a new beer release. I feel like we are in this together with FP! Take this week for example. Well, on Monday they post the new weekly pizza special, and usually we can hold out until about Wednesday before we break down and get one, but this week we lasted til about 5pm Monday evening. This sucker had duck breast, morel mushrooms, cherry mostarda (whatever that is but it's delicious), duck chicharron, and my new obsession of microgreens included. And you know, a four pack of beer thrown in for good measure. This pizza was better than advertised, and we may have to get another one before week's end. I want to be done but I also have to mention that they saved my tail for Mother's Day as well with an amazing chicken dinner with Yorkshire pudding popovers, veggies and gravy that we just warmed up and devoured. I enjoyed Axle and all, but EMBC/Ferndale Project is a notch or two above. My girlfriend and I went for their member's only opening, and they were packed. First, the beer -- I think anyone in the craft beer scene knows EMBC tends to do good or better stuff, and the bevvies here are no exception. The lady and I each got an NEIPA, and they were both very good ... Seeing Green especially was a great representation of the style. Salad Days wasn't as primo, but I'd still definitely get it again. The food is outstanding. They had a limited menu, so we each got the Hot Tofu Sammy with fries and split a pretzel. The sandwich was 100% without-a-doubt the best tofu anything that I've ever had. Incredibly crispy breading, and super flavorful (and not gummy) on the inside. They must freeze and marinate their tofu well, because it was seriously an award-worthy sammich. The pretzel was a big boy -- $9, with a side of beer cheese (we got that vegan stuff) and sweet mustard. The beer cheese was alright -- it needed a little more salt and "oomph", probably in the way of vinegar. Regardless, I'd get it again. The seating isn't ideal for me, personally, since it's mostly (all?) communal. I can deal with it, but *fuck me* I don't care to sit with strangers. It's really the same as it was at Axle, just laid out differently. In all, love the place. ALL THE SOURS! While every other microbrewery in the area makes multitudes of IPAs, this is one of the few places around that makes beers that are easy to drink. They also have great food and the absolute best patio in the area. Bright and yet cozy feeling! I sat up at the bar and got to taste a few different brews. I tried the coconut stout, raspberry gose, and Blood Orange Mimosa gose. Very nice selection. This was a member's special party day, and I am an Elephant Parade member. It was the day before the grand opening. The female staff member that I talked to was wearing the old Axle Brewing sweatshirt, but the atmosphere was all new. The succulent display on the wall mimicks the one at Eastern Market Brewing Company. There is cute art outside the restrooms and a nice wall of windows overlooking the brewing operations. read more

We stopped in here the week we moved to Ferndale. This is a wonderful place. First, we liked the beer selections. Second, the food was great. Third, everyone was super friendly. The have a collection of board games, which is always fun. The place is also dog-friendly. We don't have a pooch -- the cats would throw a fit -- but we do like dogs. There was a chocolate lab lying underneath a toddler having a snack. The poor thing's back was covered in crumbs, but he didn't seem to mind. We are looking forward to coming back often. read more

I've been anticipating their opening for a long time and so I stopped by on Saturday for the grand opening. The taproom was beautiful and the beer surpassed my high expectations. Amazing selection of sours and hazy beers. Food-wise, the menu was AMAZING for vegans and vegetarians. The other dishes looked good as well. read more
