GREAT time-fun with great atmosphere; however they close early (10pm)and basically kicked us out :( so to start, there's ample amount of parking in the parking lot and street parking for free. the place itself is HUGE and so you can bring a big group and they can accomodate you OR you can have an intimate, romantic dinner to (can do both). unfortunately the bathroom is down the stairs and there is absolutely no signal down there. the service is phenomenal, the waiters have great recommendations, are attentive and they even gave us a wine as service. the food itself wasn't bad (just a bit on the expensive side comparative to the other restaurants in the area and a bit bland). my friends got the all you can eat steak option which was absolutely delicious but it's only one type of meat (comparative to fogo de chao where you can get all different cuts of meat). the drinks are delicious & reasonable priced! along w/ the dessert! My first review of Fernandes even though I have been coming here for years. This place never disappoints. Let me start with the staff and service, I called them a few weeks prior to my visit to book a table of 8 for Hubby's bday dinner. They were extremely pleasant over the phone. U don't have to leave a credit card for reservation and no cake cutting fee, this place old school Brazilian Portuguese so al that bougie restaurant behavior is not issue here. U feel like family here, they treat you like they've know you for years. Once I arrived they took the cake from me right away and sat us down. Our waiter was so nice and patient with us as we were a big group talking and forgetting to look on the menu. Lol Now the food....if u have never had an experience at a Brazilian and Portuguese restaurant especially in the heart of the downtown Newark Portuguese neighborhood then I don't think ur living to the fullest as a foodie. Definitely an little pricey but the host and wait staff are the nicest you may ever meet. The endless rodízio meats are scary awesome. Chicken, pork, lamb, beef(might be forgetting 1 or 2) then the roasted pineapple at the end is beyond stellar!! Truthfully, we've been 3 times now and have only ever gotten the rodízio. Hey and who doesn't love pitchers of sangria?! Very nice dinning setting and overall atmosphere. We love every chance we get to come to this well-polished Newark gem. Just the right amount of sweet but be warned you will be saucy ! Just get a pitcher it makes more sense $ wise. For meat eaters go for the Rodizio not that I wanna encourage people to eat animals but in my 20s I admit I did enjoy my share. As for the fish dishes all five star. PROS: This place definitely had a great atmosphere. It had a nice spanish/italian vibe to it while walking in and through the place. The nicest people were there to greet us and to serve us. The menu had a lot on it for a steakhouse but we decided to go with the rodizio (all you can eat steak). Unlike many places in Newark this one had a parking lot which always makes the biggest difference in a city environment. CONS: Yes they had a parking lot but it was definitely too small for the crowd they can handle. Also the portions of the steak they gave us were small compared to how other steakhouses do rodizio and they cut us off way too soon from the steak. OVERALL: I am 100% going back to this place if I'm in the area and if it's for a good occasion. This is the best restaurant near me. We have gone here several times for birthday parties and I always leave with an overfilled belly. Firstly, the food. It is pretty expensive, but it makes sense, considering how good the food is. There is meat, seafood, just so much to choose from. If they don't have any meat you like, then you're just very picky. They start us off with some bread and butter so later we order our next course, some shrimp with an extra sauce, which I don't know what it is, but it's amazing. After the shrimp, we order the main course, a huge variety of meats. It's a steak house, what do you expect? Every single bite was heaven. Now, since I'm younger than the others, I also get this extra side-meal, with rice and fries. I asked for ketchup, but instead I got this sauce similar to ketchup, which honestly tasted better than normal ketchup, not much of a big deal. After we finished the main course, we have made it to the final stretch, desserts. The worker presented us with many different desserts, each of them looking good. I chose a plain vanilla ice cream, sometimes a lava cake, both are good, though. After we finished, they gave the receipt and we paid. That's it for the food, now the service was also pleasant. They just come and go, like they've been doing this their whole life. They ask us questions to see if we are okay, and after we finish a course, they pick up the leftovers, and the plates. They are very careful, making sure we have a good time. Remember the birthdays I was talking about? Yes. If we were to get a dessert, and the birthday person gets a dessert, one of us would tell the workers that it's said person's birthday. After a bit of waiting, many of the workers walk up with a candle in the dessert, singing happy birthday. And the feel-good vibe comes from my surroundings, too. This place is good, but expensive. I think it's worth coming to on a special occasion. It has valet parking only, which is annoying, but this isn't an area of Newark you necessarily want to park and walk over, so it's just part of the system. The food was great! I got the rodizio which is a good bet if you are hungry and love meat. All the meat I had was so full of flavor, but a lot of that flavor was salty, so delicious on the lips, but I felt super full by the end of the night. The salad bar they have is small and not worth visiting if you are getting the rodizio. We also got the mussels appetizer, which is really good in the white sauce and the chorizo I would have scarfed it all down if I wasn't having more meat later. From the rest of the party opinions, the cod was okay but the chips with it were amazing, and 1 person had lobster and it was great, the other had seafood paella which was mostly just the lobster, he expected more variety. They don't have a soda fountain, so soda is only by the bottle with no free refills. The rodizio was simply okay: -To start it was quite expensive at $38.98 pp. -The food bar options were lacking compared to other rodizios I have gone to and mainly consisted of salad-y sides (ex: potato salad, pasta salad, cold chickpeas, pickled veggies, small slices of corn on the cob). They did serve rice, black beans and french fries for the table which I have not had from a rodizio but we did not care for these much and would have preferred a larger array of bar items that each person can take what they prefer from. -The meat options were also less expansive than other rodizios, those of this same price point and even one that is cheaper in the same Newark neighborhood. -the grilled pineapple was simply okay. Not warmed all the way through. Was not anywhere near the amazing grilled pineapple I have had at another rodizio. Overall this place is okay and overpriced. Granted they were making 50 meals at once, but the steak I ordered rare came out generally medium (the photo looks pinker than it is). Flavor was fine for the steak, OK for the rice, absent for the vegetables. Not a fan of potato chips in any form, though these are fresh made so that might be your thing. Portions don't seem to be that great for the money. And my steak by far looked better than the other chicken/fish dishes circulating. On a Saturday evening, I came to this restaurant with my girlfriend and another couple. It was all our first time coming here. We were in the mood for steak and rodizio, and this place looked like it was going to be great. When we arrived, they offered valet parking, which was super convenient. We all started out ordering some red sangria, as well as thin sliced sausage (chorizo). They also provide your with complementary bread and butter once your seated. The sangria was amazing. It was so good that we wound up ordering additional pitchers of it throughout the evening. The chorizo appetizer was also very good. I would definitely recommend this to begin before your meals. Now for our main meals, we all ordered something different, and tried a piece of each other's meal. I went with the filet mignon, cooked medium, and it was awesome. The meat was just so tender and flavorful. This was an awesome steak. Other dishes ordered were the t-bone steak and a barbecued meat platter, which was basically all types of rodizio offerings one 1 large plate. Everything we had was delicious. We all loved it so much. All the steaks and meats we just so good. We even ordered some flan and an orange tart for dessert, and it was the perfect way to end the night. Always delicious Portuguese food in Newark. Convenient parking lot, or valet depending on when you visit. We came with a group of 6 and we seated on time for our reservations. Started with a pitcher of their delicious red sangria! Always a good start. Because you get the salad bar, we only ordered one appt. The sausage was amazing and we devoured them. The usually nice sized salad bar was pretty empty this evening and wasn't replenished during our stay. Entrees were excellent. Surf and turf. Twin lobster tails. Racks of ribs. Sea bass. Tile cooked sole. Perhaps lobster was overcooked, but everything else was great. Desserts were very good as well and we split a few to end the evening with a sweet taste. Service was excellent. The side dishes included rice, black beans, french fries and fried yuca. They had a wide variety of meats from chicken, pork, and steaks. Majority of the ribeyes and sirloins were excellent, but the chicken and pork were rather dry. 1.5/2 Service The service was ok. For an empty restaurant, and only 3 additional tables present, I would have expected better service for such a large party. It was a bit to grab anyone attention when we did need it. Went here for lunch on a day off and was very disappointed. I asked for a ribeye steak, but they don't serve any type of steak entrees for lunch. Only a smorgasbord of a beef special which is a combination of sausages and cuts of steak. It's probably excess meat that is on its way to being thrown out that they sell off for cheap. The meat was ridiculously overcooked though and I could barely cut it with my knife. I don't understand how anyone close to a chef could cook something so dry at a steakhouse, but it happened.
